The upcoming Zoe Saldaña-starring and Martin Scorsese-exec produced thriller “The Absence of Eden” has been snapped up by Signature Entertainment in a multi-territory deal.

Signature bought U.K. and Irish, Australian and New Zealand and African rights to the feature, being sold by The Exchange.

“The Absence of Eden” — also starring Garrett Hedlund (“Tron,” “Mudbound”) and Adria Arjona (“Hitman,” “Father of the Bride”) —.is directed by first-time feature director Marco Perego from a script he co-wrote with Rick Rapoza (“Cactuses”). The screenplay was recently acquired by the AMPAS Library as part of their permanent core inclusion.

The thriller pivots around the dueling narratives of an Ice Agent (Hedlund) struggling with the moral dilemmas of border security and an undocumented woman (Saldaña) fighting to escape a ruthless cartel.

Exclusive: Promised Land creator Matt Lopez has joined CBS’ recently picked up drama series Sheriff Country as executive producer and showrunner. The Fire Country spinoff, headlined by Morena Baccarin, is slated to debut during the 2025-26 season, with a writers room expected to open in late summer.

Sheriff Country was introduced when Baccarin guest starred in an April episode of the mothership series. Like the Fire Country pilot, the planted spinoff was written by Joan Rater and Tony Phelan from a story the duo co-wrote with series’ star Max Thieriot, whose real-life experiences inspired Fire Country. (Thieriot also directed the backdoor pilot episode.)

The offshoot also is following Fire Country‘s leadership pattern. Exclusive: Amazon MGM Studios has signed an exclusive overall deal with Gary “Gaz” Alazraki’s Maquina Vega. Under the deal, Alazraki is set to produce, write and direct series for Amazon MGM Studios.

Alazraki is a Mexican director known for directing the movies Father of The Bride (2022; writer and director of Mexico’s record-breaking comedy Nosotros Los Nobles (2013); and co-creator, executive producer and director of Club De Cuervos (2015), Netflix’s first Spanish original series. He heads Maquina Vega and is a board member of Oceana.

The visionary eye behind classic teen dramedies including Mean Girls and He’s All That, Mark Waters will direct the feature with a script from The Princess Switch franchise scribe Robin Bernheim.

The French Alps in VistaVision and Technicolor really sell this inspirational thriller. Spencer Tracy stars is the utterly ethical mountaineer, and young Robert Wagner his venal, verminous, just plain no damn good younger brother. Make that Much younger. Edward Dmytryk directs for big dimensions and strong emotions, and Paramount’s remaster makes the special effects of the mountain climb look good again. It’s a morality tale pitched at grade school level, and one of Tracy’s better late-career pictures. With Anna Kashfi as a plane crash victim deserving of rescue, and William Demarest as a French priest with a Preston Sturges accent.

Abbott Elementary, Atlanta and Better Call Saul are among the winners from the fourth night of the NAACP Image Awards‘ non-televised ceremonies.

Winners during Thursday’s night virtual ceremony encompassed the TV writing, TV directing and podcasting categories.

Brittani Nichols won best writing in a comedy series for Abbott Elementary, while Marissa Jo Cerar took the drama series writing award for Women of the Movement.

Angela Barnes won directing honors for the comedy series Atlanta, while Giancarlo Esposito won an NAACP Image Award for directing Better Call Saul.

Winners in the the podcasting categories included The Daily Show and LeVar Burton.

NAACP recognized winners in non-televised categories in virtual ceremonies over multiple nights. Beyoncé and Rihanna were among the winners from night one; Jennifer Hudson, Trevor Noah and Viola Davis were among those winning during night two; and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Quinta Brunson and Keke Palmer were among the night three winners.

Kimberly Williams-Paisley can understand the pain Bruce Willis’ family is going through.

On Thursday, Willis’s wife, Emma Heming, announced that the actor has unfortunately developed frontotemporal dementia, explaining that his condition worsened following his aphasia diagnosis last year.

Williams-Paisley shared her own familial experiences with dementia, writing underneath People‘s post about the diagnosis: “My mom had this too. Sending love to his family. ”

Williams-Paisley’s family has been dealing with her mother’s dementia diagnosis since 2005, when she developed an early onset of dementia at 62 years old. In 2016, the “Nashville” star wrote a memoir discussing the struggles around her mother’s diagnosis called Where the Light Gets In: Losing My Mother Only to Find Her Again.

Adria Arjona and Wagner Moura will star in the feature film adaptation of Francisco Goldman’s bestselling book “Say Her Name.” The film, which will be directed by Gerardo Naranjo, will feature a script by Goldman, while Arjona and Moura will executive produce. UTA Independent Film Group is representing worldwide rights and will be launching sales at EFM.

Naranjo is best known for directing “Miss Bala,” which premiered in Cannes in 2011, and was the Mexican entry for the Oscars and Goya awards that year. He has directed episodes of acclaimed series such as “The Walking Dead” and “Narcos,” and his latest film “Kokoloko” won Best Mexican Film at Guadalajara in 2020.

David Leitch is producing Ballerina Overdrive, which oddly enough seems to have nothing to do with Ballerina, the upcoming John Wick spinoff.

In Ballerina Overdrive, “A troupe of ballerinas find themselves fighting for survival as they attempt to escape from a remote inn after their bus breaks down on the way to a competition.”

The film is said to feature “dance-based action choreography,” and it’s being launched at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin by Vincent Maraval and Kim Fox’s The Veterans for international and CAA Media Finance for domestic.

At Midnight is a bi-cultural love story from Paramount+ with heart, humor, and sweeping romance. The film stars Diego Boneta as Alejandro and Monica Barbaro as Sophie Wilder, who meet when Wilder's work as an actress on a superhero franchise brings her to a boutique beachfront hotel managed by Alejandro. Directed by Jonah Feingold and boasting a screenplay written by Feingold, Maria Hinojos, and Giovanni Porta, At Midnight's relatable story and use of Mexico as a character in its protagonists' budding relationship sets it apart from other romantic comedies while displaying all the timeless hallmarks of the genre.

While much of what makes At Midnight such an enjoyable and re-watchable romantic comedy is the chemistry between the film's lead actors, Diego Boneta's contributions extend beyond his performance as an actor. Boneta also produced the film, helping to both get it off the ground and shape it into what it eventually became.

During a visit to The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, Gellar was asked about Parton being an uncredited producer on the show she starred in for seven seasons.

“Yes, little known fact, the legend Dolly Parton was a producer,” she said on the NBC late-night show. “We never saw her [but] we’d get Christmas gifts in the beginning that would have our name, and I would think, ‘She doesn’t even know who I am.’ And then one day, someone asked her about it, and she complimented the show and my performance. I was like, ‘Oh, I can die now. Dolly Parton knows who I am and thinks I’m good.'”

Nancy Meyers, co-writer and producer of the 1991 Father of the Bride movie starring Steve Martin and Diane Keaton, says late actress Cindy Williams inspired the remake.

In an Instagram post remembering the Laverne & Shirley star, who died last Wednesday at the age of 75, Meyers expressed her sadness over hearing of Williams’ death. And in a brief anecdote, the writer and producer of the film directed by ex-husband Charles Shyer revealed how the beloved TV icon helped make the ’90s romantic comedy a reality.

“What few people know is that it was Cindy’s idea to remake Father of the Bride,” Meyers recalled. “She told me she was watching the Spencer Tracey [sic] version on TV one night and thought it would be a great movie to remake.”

Eva Longoria and George Lopez are set to star in the Latino-centric “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day,” a new Disney+ adaptation of Judith Viorst’s bestselling children’s book, according to an individual with knowledge of the project.

Marvin Lemus, the co-creator and showrunner of “Gentefied,” is set to direct the project. “Father of the Bride’s” Matt Lopez wrote the script. Production on the Disney+ project is eyeing a spring start date in New Mexico.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, which first reported the news, the film “follows a Mexican-American family who have recently lost their connection to each other and their roots, as they embark on an epic road trip that immediately goes hilariously wrong.”

Richard Linklater’s action comedy “Hitman” has begun production in New Orleans for AGC Studios, with actors Austin Amelio, Retta and Molly Bernard joining the cast.

“Hitman” stars Glen Powell and Adria Arjona, and was announced ahead of the Cannes Film Festival, where it was first introduced to buyers. Stuart Ford’s AGC Studios is co-financing the movie with leading indie financiers Shivani Rawat’s ShivHans Pictures and Monarch Media.

Powell, who plays Hangman in Paramount’s “Top Gun: Maverick,” stars in the project as a Houston cop who’s been working undercover as the most in-demand hitman in Houston, until one day he breaks protocol in order to help a desperate woman (Arjona) trying to escape an abusive boyfriend. The project is based on a Texas Monthly article.

On Oct. 31, the Comedy Central shows “Key and Peele,” “Nathan for You,” “Inside Amy Schumer,” “Reno 911!” and “Chappelle’s Show” (the first two seasons) will depart HBO Max, likely heading to Paramount+ at some point in November.

Also leaving HBO Max this month is the Halsey music film “If I Can’t Have Love I Want Power,” as well as the surprisingly great horror prequel “Annabelle: Creation.” Other noteworthy depatures include “Capote,” “High Fidelity,” “Jerry Maguire,” “McCabe and Mrs. Miller,” the 1994 version of “Little Women” and the “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” movies.
