I think the most underreported or underobserved phenomenon in the post-covid-19 entertainment landscape is the act of allegedly releasing movies as miniseries. I first saw this happening with 2020’s Dangerous, which spanned eight episodes, each of which technically ran for twenty minutes. But if you removed the opening and the end credits, each episode was hardly ten minutes long. If you multiply ten with eight, you get eighty minutes. I am sure you have seen actual movies that are eighty or ninety minutes long, so I don’t have to explain why it’s preposterous to chop up a narrative like that and release it as a TV series. Why did Emilia Clarke have to hide her skin color? (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Emilia Clarke has made a name for herself over the last decade and a half, in part thanks to her breakout role as Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones, which she enlivened for nine years. The British actress, fawned over by the world for her Hollywood roles, shares genes from another part of the globe.
The actress, who stands with roots across the British Isles, holds a concealed heritage that perfectly complements her white identity. That secret stems tens of thousands of miles away in India, born during the colonial era.

Highly acclaimed author Brandon Sanderson recently took a few moments on his podcast to reflect on the state of comic book movies and where he hopes the genre goes in the near future.
For years now, critics and audiences alike have worried about the potential fallout of the sheer glut of superhero movies that have been released over the course of the last two decades. All of this reached a head shortly after the pandemic, when the two powerhouses of superheroes, Marvel and DC, were both faced with widespread failure and forced to dramatically reconsider their plans.

A wasted MCU Phase 5 villain actress has just found her next role in an Amazon Prime Video series with Star-Lord actor Chris Pratt. Marvel Studios has wasted many major villains through the years, turning those with deep comic histories into one-off threats or canon fodder for a bigger bad. From Captain America: The First Avenger's Red Skull to Black Widow's Taskmaster, fans have been saying the MCU has a villain problem for years.
Phase 5 had perhaps some of the McU's best villains yet in Thunderbolts*'s Sentry, Daredevil: Born Again's Kingpin, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's High Evolutionary. That said, Marvel Studios also delivered some...

I said it about Nobody when it was first released, and I’ll repeat it now — Nobody 2 cements itself as one of the most bone-crunching, knuckle-busting, and lip-splitting action franchises of the 21st century. So, did Tom Cruise save movies in 2022, or did he steal the title from Bob Odenkirk from the year prior?
That’s right, give me Hutch any day of the week, as he will have every intention of dragging Maverick across a sweet piece of asphalt to leave shards of glass in your forehead. Yes, Nobody 2, the sequel to the surprise 2021 pandemic hit, is bruising entertainment that packs some wicked punches and some savage laughs.

Zach Cregger Shares The Darker Weapons Ending (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Zach Cregger, the weapons director, shared that the horror film Weapons originally had a darker ending. The movie follows a town shaken by strange events, centered around seventeen children who mysteriously vanish from their elementary school. The story mixes supernatural forces with a threatening figure, Gladys, played by Amy Madigan. She uses witchcraft to trap Alex’s classmates and drain their energy, showing how dangerous she is. In the final version, Gladys is defeated, and the narration tells us that Alex is now with a family member and hints that some children might recover.
Original Ending Vs Final Cut: What Changed In Weapons
Cregger revealed in an interview with Inverse that the original ending was much bleaker. It simply ended on a close-up of Archer’s son without any voiceover. He preferred that silent finish, but test audiences did not respond well to it.

One of the beauties of streaming platforms is having the opportunity for comic book stories to be told outside of their respective cinematic universes. Maybe more importantly, it’s a chance for the novice to see them like they are in the source material. You can see what started the momentum that made them popular.
Marvel Studios has successfully attempted this multiple times on Disney Plus, with the likes of X-Men '97 and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man telling gripping, comic-accurate stories that aren't tied to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And that just highlights that we need more animated Marvel shows.
The upcoming list will explore some Marvel Comics stories that would be the perfect source material for an animated series or project on Disney Plus. Let’s start with a personal favorite.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps hasn't been a huge box office success, but the movie has performed well enough and seemingly earned the approval of Disney CEO Bob Iger.
Earlier this week, we learned that Marvel Studios is supposedly planning to bring filmmaker Matt Shakman back for a sequel. It seems the hope is that Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars will further increase interest in the team, helping to make any follow-up a much bigger hit.
Marvel's First Family has successfully taken down Galactus and the Silver Surfer on Earth 828, and regardless of whether this sequel takes place there or on Earth 616, there are still plenty of iconic foes for this team to go up against.

Universal Picturesis reportedly taking a major legal stance against AI.Since June, viewers have been noticing warnings at the end of Universal movies which state the films cannot be used to train AI, furthering the interesting conversation about movie studios and technological advancements like artificial intelligence. Most recently, the warning appeared in The Bad Guys 2 end credits.
According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, the worldwide distribution of this anti-ai warning in the end credits of their movies adds another layer of protection for Universal Pictures. This warning will hopefully help to prevent data mining and stop artificial intelligence systems from being trained using intellectual and copyrighted properties. Tron: Ares plot centers around artificial intelligence, but it looks like Disney actually considered using it in the film. Tron: Ares is the third film in the surprising Tron trilogy, following the cult-classic 1982 movie, Tron, and 2010 sequel, Tron: Legacy. Where past films have shown humans going into the digital world, this third entry will bring the programs into the real world in an explosive confrontation between humanity and artificial intelligence.
In a recent report by the Wall Street Journal, via Deadline, Disney executives "pitched the idea of actually incorporating AI into one of the characters in the sequel...as a buzzy marketing strategy.” The AI character would have been a sidekick to Jeff Bridges' character, Flynn. It is unclear exactly what the extent of the AI character or marketing strategy would have been, but the concept was scrapped because "executives internally were told that the company couldn’t risk the bad publicity.

Disney has certainly struggled at the box office in recent years, and it appears the push to add more content to Disney+ might be the main culprit. With reliable names like Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar, Walt Disney Animation, and their various live-action remakes, Disney movies dominated the late 2010s box office. However, following the Covid-19 pandemic, and the launch of Disney+, the studio has seen many of its movies struggle at the box office, with even some of its biggest franchises — like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Indiana Jones, and more — struggling.
A recent report from The Wrap (via Comic Book Movie) suggests that the desire to push out more Star Wars and Marvel projects has seemingly worn audiences down and devalued the brand. One franchise producer said, "Given the quality of the Marvel Disney+ output has been incredibly mediocre, it’s dragged the entire brand down and diluted its creativity.

Though it may not come as a big surprise, a new report has revealed that Disney+ greatly harmed the Marvel Studios, "Star Wars," and Pixar brands in recent years. The rise of streaming was accelerated in 2020 largely in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, which shut down theaters all over the world. The Mouse House had already launched Disney+, but the circumstances forced the company to double down. That may have helped it get a leg-up in the streaming game initially, but it came at the expense of some of the studio's biggest brands.

Nobody is rooting for Marvel Studios to emerge stronger from its post-"Endgame" slump harder than us. The studio that completely reinvented and defined the superhero movie subgenre for the contemporary age -- and, for better and for worse, turned the entire filmmaking industry on its head -- has had to endure an awkward transitional phase as it weathers behind-the-scenes controversies, pandemic-related scheduling issues, and corporate pressures to creatively overextend. As a result, Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was wildly uneven. The safest bets often felt constrained by forces outside the story, while the biggest swings lacked the polish and consistency expected of the brand today.

Between movies, TV shows, and animated series, there have been over 50 Marvel Studios projects since Iron Man blasted onto our screens in 2008.
Ranking them is no easy feat, but Variety has taken a crack at it, and the results have proven hugely divisive. Moon Knight was worse than Echo and Captain America: Brave New World? The Fantastic Four: First Steps is beneath The Marvels and Ironheart? And wait, Avengers: Endgame is the best MCU movie over Black Panther?!
Some of you might agree with those decisions, but you can still probably see why this list has split opinions.
Looking back at these movies and TV shows, it's wild to see how far Marvel Studios has come since Phase 1 culminated with what was then the biggest superhero movie of all-time: The Avengers.
Ultimately, everyone's ranking is going to differ, and one person's favourite movie or TV show could be someone...

Since its inception, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has captivated audiences with a thrilling interconnected storyline that spans countless films. However, the game was forever changed with the introduction of Disney+ and its potential to bring audiences even closer to the action. Characters like the Scarlet Witch, Vision, Ms. Marvel, and Loki were suddenly in our own living room, and, from the get-go, they have kept us guessing about what will happen in next week's episode. Unfortunately, this new media format hasn't been without its own difficulties.

IMAX has been a must-see destination for audiences to get the best movie experience possible, but in one day, they have seemingly thrown out their goodwill by hosting an AI film festival. AI has become a controversial topic in recent years, as productions ranging from Secret Invasion to Late Night with the Devil and Netflix's The Eternaut have been dabbling in the technology. Despite significant backlash from many fans, critics, and filmmakers, many are still eager to treat AI as the next tool in filmmaking, and IMAX has given the emerging technology a platform.

Marvel Studios just finished Phase 5 with Ironheart, but fixing six major issues could have turned the McU's latest chapter into something special. After the middling releases of Phase 4, excitement was high going into Phase 5 and the second act of the Multiverse Saga. The MCU finally had its course set toward the next Avengers movies and a cosmic face-off with Jonathan Majors' Council of Kangs in The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars. Of course, as most will be well aware, real-world issues got in the way and Avengers 5 evolved into Doomsday starring Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom.
Throughout this latest chapter, fans have been treated to some of the McU's all-time greats across Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Thunderbolts*, Daredevil: Born Again, and Loki Season 2. Marvel’s future isn’t all capes and punches – it’s getting nerdy. With Reed Richards and The Fantastic Four on the horizon, the MCU is about to dive deep into cosmic equations, genetic mutations, and multiversal chaos. But if you’ve been paying attention, that shift already started long back.
Across five Disney+ series, Marvel’s been laying the groundwork for its next phase, where science doesn’t just explain the strange – it is the strange. So, what are we waiting for? Here’s how five shows quietly paved the way for Marvel’s brainy new direction.
5. Loki Rewired the Timeline & Made Multiversal Physics the New Normal
Loki didn’t just mess with time – it broke it wide open. That’s right, the Tva, variants, branching timelines, all of it shoved the MCU headfirst into multiversal madness. This wasn’t magic or aliens, it was pure theoretical physics turned real.

Marvel Studios’ chief Kevin Feige has signaled a return to stand-alone television, pulling Marvel away from the “homework” strategy that dominated recent years. With the Studio’s next big movie, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, about to premiere, Feige sat down with journalists and made his vision clear: the flood of interconnected content is coming to an end.
Going forward, Marvel’s TV and movie worlds will finally get some space from each other. He said via Variety:
I think allowing a TV show to be a TV show is what we’re returning to. For the first time ever, quantity trumped quality. We spent 12 years working on the Infinity Saga saying that’s never going to happen to us. We always had more characters than we could possibly make because we weren’t going to make a movie a month. Suddenly, there’s a mandate to make more. And we go,...

The future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still massive — but Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige says it won’t be quite as overwhelming anymore. During a roundtable discussion with select journalists, Feige officially confirmed that the MCU is scaling back its output of films and TV shows. This follows a challenging stretch for Marvel in which projects like The Marvels and Secret Invasion underperformed and Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts drew mixed reactions and modest box office projections. According to Feige, the issue wasn’t superhero fatigue — it was overexpansion.
“From the first Iron Man in 2008 through Endgame in 2019, Marvel produced around 50 hours of screen storytelling. In the six years since Endgame, the number jumped to an astounding 102 hours of movies and television. 127 hours if you include animation. That’s too much.”

The start of DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Universe hasn't been quite as clean as the launch of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The rapid reboot from the previous, similarly named DC Extended Universe to this new iteration of DC's cinematic universe has been less than perfectly clean cut, with a number of projects -- from Gunn's own "The Suicide Squad" to "Blue Beetle" -- creating a muddied connection between the two continuities. All that said, there's no question that "Superman" is the proper beginning of the franchise on the big-screen, kicking off a plan that Gunn has assured the press and public alike has been well thought-out.
To that end, "Superman" is packed (and arguably overstuffed) with details setting up future pieces of the Dcu. Characters like Rick Flag (Frank Grillo) and Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn) have brief cameos, but they're sure to persist in upcoming projects.

Several exciting new Funko Pop figures have been released throughout the MCU Phase 5. The fifth phase of the MCU recently ended with the release of the Dominique Thorne-led Ironheart series, closing the book on an era of the franchise that spans from February 2023 to July 2025. The latest effort from Marvel Studios' super-powered brand was a little lackluster (to say the least), hitting highs like Deadpool & Wolverine and lows like Secret Invasion.
However, one thing has remained constant across all five phases of the MCU to this point: excellent Funko Pop figurines hitting store shelves for fans to collect. For years, the now-iconic toy brand has produced adorable shrunk-down versions of characters from across pop culture, with Marvel Studios (and the greater Marvel universe) being an anchor for the Funko brand.

The world of Tulsa King is about to get even bigger and bolder. Paramount+ has officially given a series order to Nola King, a highly anticipated spinoff of the hit crime drama, with none other than Samuel L. Jackson set to lead the charge and executive produce. This great news comes just a month after learning that the show was in the works. It just hadn't been officially confirmed until now.
With the addition of Nola King, the Tulsa King franchise is set to expand its universe for the first time. Taylor Sheridan, creator of Tulsa King, joins Jackson as an executive producer on the new series. Sylvester Stallone (star of Tulsa King), David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin, Bob Yari, Michael Friedman, and Keith Cox are all executive producers as well. In addition, the show is being produced by MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios.

Doctor Victor von Doom is the most fantastic villain in all of Marvel Comics, but he has a pretty poor showing in the movies.
Doom in Marvel cartoons, though? That's a different story. There are a lot of strong takes on Doom in animation, particularly the canceled-too-soon "Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes." That Doom (voiced by Lex Lang) had scant screentime, but boy did he leave an impression with it.
Lang's Doctor Doom debuts in the season 2 premiere, "The Private War of Doctor Doom" (written by series' co-creator Christopher Yost). The Avengers are spending time with the Fantastic Four. They get roped into Doom's latest attack on the Four when Doom's minions abduct the Sue "the Invisible Woman" Storm (Erin Torpey) and the Wasp (Colleen O'Shaughnessey).
In Latveria, the trash-talking Wasp tries to get under Doom's skin (or at least his armor). When Doom's own silence doesn't shut Wasp up,...

Paramount+ has officially greenlit “Nola King,” a spinoff of “Tulsa King” starring Samuel L. Jackson.
Variety originally reported on the series in June, with Jackson set to first appear in the upcoming third season of “Tulsa King” before moving over to his own series. Paramount has now officially confirmed plot details for “Nola King,” with the official logline stating:
“‘Nola King’ follows Russell Lee Washington Jr. (Jackson) who, after befriending Dwight Manfredi (Sylvester Stallone) during a ten-year stint in federal prison, is sent to Tulsa by New York’s Renzetti crime family to take Dwight out once and for all. Inspired by what Dwight created in Tulsa and impressed with the possibilities of second chances, Washington returns to New Orleans, the home he abandoned forty-years ago, to rekindle his relationship with his family, friends, and to take control of the city he left behind. FX has carved a niche for itself with its amazing array of original programming. It ranges from hit TV shows like Shogun and The Bear to limited series like the various Ryan Murphy anthologies. The network has excelled at daring shows of all kinds, many of which have scored several Emmy nominations.

Sherlock fans will be celebrating the show's 15th anniversary when it arrives on July 25, but the show's co-creator Mark Gatiss won't. He doesn't see it as worth recognizing -- even as he's revealed his pick for the best Sherlock episode of all time.
"15 [years] is not an anniversary," Gatiss told the Radio Times in a recent interview. "You see this persistently online. It's like, ‘Oh, it’s a year ago today’, and you're going, ‘Let it go!’ Or, ‘It's the 17th anniversary’. It's not a real thing." Yet the actor, writer and producer -- who also played Mycroft Holmes in the BBC hit -- was much more excited about his favorite episode.
Gatiss pointed to the Series 2 premiere "A Scandal in Belgravia," written by his co-creator Steven Moffat and directed by Alex McGuigan. "The best episode... is definitely 'A Scandal in Belgravia', which is fantastic," he said. "I think [it] is a...

Rumor: Samuel L. Jackson Will Return As Former S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury In Avengers: Doomsday
The cast of Avengers: Domsday is mighty impressive, but also missing some big names. Tom Holland, Chris Pratt, and Hugh Jackman were among those absent from March's casting announcement, as was Samuel L. Jackson.
The legendary actor first played Nick Fury in 2008's Iron Man, and despite taking centre stage in Secret Invasion and The Marvels, the former S.H.I.E.L.D. Director has been largely absent from the Avengers franchise since Age of Ultron.
Today, scooper Alex Perez brings word that Jackson is set to return as Fury in Avengers: Doomsday. Hopefully, he'll be front and centre in helping Earth's Mightiest Heroes combat the threat Doctor Doom poses to the Multiverse.
When we last saw Fury, he was still orbiting Earth in S.A.B.E.R.'s base. We'd bet on him remaining allied with Captain Marvel, especially if they're still looking for the missing Monica Rambeau.
Hopefully, this means...

Marvel Studios' Avengers: Doomsday might be a little bit further away from releasing than we originally thought, but that doesn't make it any less anticipated. The upcoming juggernaut of a film is set to act as the beginning of the end for the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Multiverse Saga, setting the stage for the grand finale in its own sequel Avengers: Secret Wars. The franchise has been here before when Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame brought an end to the record-breaking Infinity Saga. There is no reason to think that the MCU won't find similar levels of success here.
Although nothing will come close to the groundbreaking buzz that those films generated, the studio is going all out to recreate as much of that buzz as possible, as Avengers: Doomsday boasts a star-studded cast, featuring legends from not just the MCU but previous Marvel franchises like the X-Men movies. That...

British actress Emilia Clarke, best known as Daenerys Targaryen in the beloved Game of Thrones, has been part of many exciting projects since her on-screen career began back in 2009. From joining the MCU in Secret Invasion to starring in one of the sleeper hits of the modern holiday season, Last Christmas, Clarke's filmography might be relatively small, but it is packed with eye-catching performances.
Among these is the romantic drama Me Before You, which sees Clarke star as Lou Clark alongside The Count of Monte Cristo's Sam Claflin as Will Traynor, in a tale that explores the boundaries of love against life's most difficult circumstances. In the Beginning, There Was WandaVision
Wandavision was released way back in 2021. It marked the beginning of a new era — or experiment — in the MCU: long-form television series directly connected to the movies. This slate came out swinging, and I think Marvel knew what they had on their hands. Wandavision released confidently and holds a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. It had an interesting premise, a stellar cast, and — most importantly — it gave the spotlight to a character who hadn’t starred in her own movie yet. Remember that one. With Wandavision out and generating buzz, Marvel and Disney must have been thrilled about the dozens of other shows they had lined up for the future.
Similar to Wandavision, Loki premiered in 2021 to both critical and fan acclaim. It was a smart sci-fi series that introduced new characters and concepts to the MCU, wrapped in beautifully designed sets and stylish cinematography.

With the release of Ironheart's final three episodes last Tuesday, Phase Five has reached its end. Starting with Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania in 2023, much has changed over the past two and a half years.
That movie was meant to introduce us to Kang and his many Variants after Loki set the stage for him to be the Multiverse Saga's big bad. As we write this, Kang is out, and Doctor Doom is in. Oh, and Mephisto just made his debut....on streaming.
It's been an unpredictable few years of storytelling, with the latter half largely devoted to Marvel Studios' attempt to move back to quality rather than quantity. Unfortunately, many of the movies and TV shows in this first half of our Phase Five ranking fall under the "quantity" category.
You can find out how we've ranked a tumultuous Phase Five by clicking the "Next"/"View List" buttons below.

Since the dawn of "The Avengers" in 2012, Marvel Studios has had its sights set on television. What better way for the rising juggernaut to expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe -- essentially one of, if not the most popular and expensive work of serialized storytelling ever produced -- than to incorporate traditional serialized storytelling into their plans. Not only would this allow them to tell smaller, character-driven stories that would benefit from less spectacle and more screen time, but it would give fans around the world the chance to enter the MCU regularly from the comfort of their own homes.
The results of this project in the decade-plus since its inception have been... mixed, to say the least. Some series have been so moving, innovative, or impactful that they rank among the franchise's best stories to date. Others are so dull, plodding, and unwatchable, that Marvel would probably thank us for not reminding you of them.

When commenting on the MCU characters, we almost always reference the big hitters like the Avengers or the most notable villains. But the truth of the matter is the MCU wouldn’t be what it is today if not for the contribution of secondary characters whose actions impacted the storylines more than realized.
This is why fans took to Ranker to decide on the 10 most underrated characters in the MCU. Some, due to unfortunate circumstances will never get their 5 minutes of fame again, and for some, there is still hope. Let’s see who’s on the list.

Marvel Studios' Phase Five ended this week with the season finale of Ironheart. There used to be a slightly more defined structure to these Phases, but wrapping up another undeniably hit-and-miss couple of years for the Multiverse Saga with Mephisto's debut is still a pretty noteworthy statement.
Phase 5 began with Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, a largely disappointing threequel that dropped the ball on Kang...around the same time Jonathan Majors' career imploded. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 made up for it with a worthy send-off for James Gunn and the team, only for Secret Invasion to earn the scorn of fans with a catastrophic adaptation of an event-level comic book storyline.
Still, Loki season 2 was a win for the studio (even with one of its leads mired in controversy), making it a shame when 2023 ended on a bum note with The Marvels and What If...? season 2. A year later,...

An underrated action comedy duology is finding a new audience four years after its last installment hit theaters. The Hitman's Bodyguard and its sequel Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard have found their way into Netflix's Top 10 after being added to the streamer at the start of July.
Per FlixPatrol, Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard and The Hitman's Bodyguard initially debuted at No. 5 and No. 9 on Netflix's Top 10 Movies list in the United States; however, as of July 3, they have basically traded places, with the former now sitting at No. 9 while the latter has risen to No. 6. The action comedy duology stars Ryan Reynolds as a bodyguard who must protect an imprisoned hitman, played by Samuel L. Jackson, with Salma Hayek playing Jackson's character's wife.
Both movies were directed by Patrick Hughes, whose prior credits include the 2010 neo-Western thriller Red Hill and the third installment in Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables franchise. He...

The Star Wars franchise is no stranger to stumbling and getting back up. It's one of the most iconic movie series in Hollywood history but there have been some darker days for it through the years as well. Let's not forget the response to the prequel trilogy - particularly that of The Phantom Menace and Jar Jar Binks - or Disney Plus series The Book of Boba Fett. Star Wars' newest era has provided its devoted fans with plenty of opportunities for discussion, as there have been plenty of ups and downs that have come with it. While the Skywalker movie series has come to an end and both Disney and Lucasfilm figured out the next steps for the stories in that galaxy so far, far away, the franchise lived on...

This is something that was addressed by series star Anthony Ramos in a recent interview.
Since its debut, Ironheart’s critical score has continued to rise, currently sitting at 87%, far above heavily panned shows like Secret Invasion. While many of the negative reviews about the show continue to list the same old Marvel complaints of it being generic, too much like every else in the MCU, and not doing enough to push its own story,...
