Note: For the average viewer, this film may not be a good film or considered it rubbish since they may not know enough (of its references) to appreciate Euro-horror and exploitation cinema.
This 2020 Quarantine era film, directed by Lorenzo Lepori was written (with Alex Visani and Antonio Rentori) around March and filmed in the month of July 2020. This passion film was made in the Italian town of Borgo, during the lock down area.
In a way, if one sees art as an imitation of life, "Flesh Contagium" shows the distress of COVID 19 global lockdown. The script was done by Visani and 80s veteran writer Rentori (had worked for 80s era Italian film directors). Rentori says that this film, story can suggest 80s Bruno Mattei's "Rats" and this writing collaboration was a merging of the 80s Italian apocalyptic genre with the COVID 19 pandemic.
Lepori has said that aside from Italian genre films, U. S. 80s films like David Decoteau's "Creepzoids" have influenced its special effects. Its storyline (set in 2029) involves human and mutated humans like "Udolfo" (Pio Bisanti) and "Ornella" (Shiri Binder) (due to scientifically made viruses) roam the apocalypse-looking country side, trying to survive from a band of terrorists called "The Executors". They are dressed in complete hazmat outfits, a similar cinematic trope found in dozens of 80s era Italian films.
Amidst the onscreen violence, there's a dystopian love story, following almost like a 70s era Jean Rollins film. With nude scenes, both actors combine violence and eroticism together.
There are additional creatures like a small fleshy animal, morphed from human tissue and a wailing flesh-eating, she-monster almost like a "Banshee" or a "Llorona" (a Mexican folklore ghost). If you enjoy exploitative films, heavy on gore and sex, this is for those viewers.
"Flesh Contagium" original soundtrack was done by Basement Glare who composed its catchy theme song, "Rise of the Enlightened" (obviously inspired by Industrial and Metal rock genres).
