Who Is the Avian Killer in ‘Wednesday’ Season 2, Part 1?
Image
“Wednesday” Season 2 is here, and with the new season of one of Netflix’s most-watched shows comes a host of new mysteries. Chief among them is the shrouded identity of the “avian killer,” a person who can control birds and who appears to be stalking Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday as she investigates the death of Tyler Galpin’s father, who, in turn, appeared to be knee-deep in an investigation of his own until birds killed him.

But who is the person behind the birds? Let’s dig into it. Spoilers ahead, of course.

Who is the Avian Killer?

The avian menace is unmasked in Episode 4, and while Wednesday suspects Dr. Fairburn (Thandiwe Newton), the avian killer is actually Judi, Fairburn’s assistant, played by “The Princess Diaries” and “Saved!” actress Heather Matarazzo.

Judi, it turns out, is the daughter of Augustus Stonehurst, a former Nevermore professor who eventually became the...

Mr. Belding Was Irate After Being Left Out of the ‘Saved By the Bell’ Reunion
Image
Dennis Haskins kicked off a wave of Saved by the Bell nostalgia in the 2000s when he became the first cast member to appear on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. But despite Haskins’ irrefutable place in Sbtb legend, the hottest members of the cast froze out Haskins and Dustin “Screech” Diamond when they reunited for a People magazine cover story in 2009.

The actor who played Mr. Belding was furious. Haskins contacted the Detroit News — Variety not taking your calls, Dennis? — to vent his frustrations. “I earned the right to be there. If anybody deserved to be on that cover, it was Dennis Haskins,” he ranted, per Vulture. “I want people to know it was not my choice not to be there, because I would have been there. It hurts my feelings, but I’ll live.”

He continued to gripe to Parade. “They didn't even talk about Mr. Belding,” he complained.

Mackenyu Explains How He Stayed True to Zoro in One Piece Live-Action Series
Image
The live-action One Piece series on Netflix has been a huge hit, and fans are eagerly awaiting the second season after filming wrapped. The show, based on Eiichiro Oda’s popular manga, became a success thanks to its loyal adaptation of the beloved characters.

One standout character is Roronoa Zoro, played by Japanese actor Mackenyu, whose portrayal has won praise from both One Piece fans and newcomers alike.

Zoro, with his signature green hair and multi-sword fighting style, is one of the most famous characters in anime and manga. Naturally, many fans were worried about how the character would translate into a live-action series.

However, Netflix’s adaptation put those concerns to rest. Mackenyu’s portrayal of Zoro has been a key factor in the show’s success.

Chicago Pd just hasn't been the same since these 5 characters left
Image
Chicago Pd has been doing well, but it just hasn’t been the same since losing certain characters! We take a look at the five we miss the most.

When a show runs 12 seasons, it’s only natural to shed some names in the cast. Chicago Pd hasn’t seen as much of a huge cast turnover since the first year but has lost a few characters as it went. Some aren’t too big; Sean Roman had a nice presence but was not important overall, while Vanessa Rojas only lasted one season and was forgettable.

Then, there are some major characters who brought true heart and power to the show. They were amazingly popular with the fans and often felt like the backbone of the series and its drama. Their departures all affected the show, and while it’s gone on, it seems something was lost with those gone.

Macaulay Culkin's 'Richie Rich' Reaches Top 10 Streaming Chart on Netflix
Image
Richie Rich, the 1994 comedy starring Macaulay Culkin, is a streaming success. The film, currently available on the Netflix library, has spent a few days on the streamer's top 10 list of most popular movies. Richie Rich is sitting in the eighth spot at the time of writing, while other titles on the list include The Menu, Back in Action, and How to Train Your Dragon 2.

Directed by Donald Petrie, Richie Rich is based on the comic book character of the 1950s. The character also had an animated cartoon show in the 1980s, which was then revived in 1996 after the release of the movie. Richie Rich only made $76 million from a $40 million production budget and had a mixed reception by critics; it currently has a 27% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Although it was considered a box office flop, Richie Rich blew up the home video market and made an estimated $125 million in home video sales.

‘Fallen Leaves’ Star Alma Poysti, ‘Concrete Night’ Director Pirjo Honkasalo Look for the Sacred in ‘Orenda’: ‘It’s Deep Within Us’
Image
Golden Globe nominee Alma Pöysti, known for “Fallen Leaves,” is now leading “Orenda.”

The film, which premieres at Rotterdam and Göteborg festivals, is directed by Finnish director Pirjo Honkasalo (“Concrete Night”) and written by Pirkko Saisio. It sees Nora (Pöysti), a famous opera singer, escaping to a remote archipelago following the suicide of her husband. “Welcomed” only by prickly priest Natalia (Saisio), the two women immediately butt heads.

The film is produced by Bufo, while the Yellow Affair handles sales.

“They recognize themselves in each other, and they can’t stand it. They’re two forces locked in a battle and when they choose not to speak, it’s extremely powerful. It’s a very Finnish weapon, to use silence this way,” Pöysti tells Variety. Slowly, the frenemies start to heal each other’s wounds.

“I found it enjoyable, the way they challenge each other,” Honkasalo adds.

Why Alok Sahar From Star Trek: Section 31 Looks So Familiar
Image
Olatunde Osunsanmi's new TV movie "Star Trek: Section 31" is weirdly retro in its setup, feeling reminiscent of delightfully corny B-movies of the 1980s like Peter Manoogian's low-budget time-travel lark "Eliminators." The main character is Empress Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh), the genocidal tyrant of the Mirror Universe, and she has been enlisted to be part of Section 31, Starfleet's ethics-free black ops organization that handles dangerous secret missions.

The film's cast, however, is rounded out by a rogues' gallery of diverse aliens and specialists, each one enlisted to help the Empress on a vital mission to retrieve a doomsday device. There is the shapeshifter Quasi (Sam Richardson), a none-too-bright cyborg bruiser named Fuzz (Sven Ruygrok), a microscopic organism named Zeph piloting a human-sized robot (Robert Kazinsky), an ultra-seductive Deltan named Melle (Humberly Gonzalez), and Rachel Garrett (Kacey Rohl), a straight-laced Starfleet officer who is there to make sure...

Every Song Elvis Presley Performed In The 1968 Comeback Special
Image
Return of the King: The Fall and Rise of Elvis Presley is Netflix's newest musical documentary, examining Elvis's tumultuous career and highlighting some of the songs he performed in his famous 1968 comeback special. The 1968 Elvis comeback special was a pivotal moment in his career, seeing him return to the stage after years of working in the film industry at the request of his manager, Colonel Tom Parker. Feeling dissatisfied with the lack of artistry in his movies, the special was a return to form for the iconic singer.

Though some of Elvis Presley's best movies, such as Viva Las Vegas, are considered classics, Elvis is known best in pop culture history for his influence on music. The 2022 biopic, Elvis, examines the toxic relationship between the star and Tom Parker, who pushed him toward his more commercial appeal. We Need To #SaveChucky
Image
After season three of Chucky ended, fans were subjected to a painfully long wait as the show’s future was decided. Ultimately, USA/SyFy/Peacock canceled Chucky and the entire horror world shed a bloody tear. Even if you weren’t a fan of the franchise, it’s hard to deny how great it was having a classic horror villain get such a mainstream spotlight. Hell, we even got to see Chucky kill WWE Women’s Champion Liv Morgan. It’s the kind of thing that only works in the ludicrous world of Chucky. And with Season 3 ending off on such a cliffhanger, this cancellation really leaves fans high and dry. But there’s still hope in multiple forms.

The 2000s Were the Pinnacle of Mean Girl Cinema
Image
This article is part of IndieWire’s 2000s Week celebration. Click here for a whole lot more.

In 2002, author Rosalind Wiseman published a self-help book entitled “Queen Bees and Wannabes,” aimed at helping parents of high school-aged girls deal with the vicious effects of bullying on their daughters. Wiseman could not have possibly predicted what came next: that Tina Fey would a) read the book, b) see some of her own high school experience reflected back to her, and c) call up Lorne Michaels and suggest the non-fiction book would make a banger of a high school comedy. Some people have all the luck, don’t they?

What Fey saw in Wiseman’s relatively dry book was timeless — there have always been instances of “girl on girl crime,” and they sure as hell weren’t stopping — but when the comedic icon turned Wiseman’s work into the enduring early aughts offering “Mean Girls,...

10 Things That Made No Sense In The Saved By The Bell Reboot
Image
The Saved by the Bell reboot received criticism for its character development, friendships, and tone-deaf jokes. Specific issues included Zack's misogynistic behavior, A.C. Slater's lack of growth, and Kelly's reduced role as Zack's "hot wife." The show's attempt to be relevant with jokes about sensitive topics, such as Selena Gomez's kidney transplant, was not well-received

Saved by the Bell was hugely popular during its original run, but there were several things about the 2020 reboot that made no sense. Saved by the Bell ended in 1993, but the franchise was revived for a TV spinoff and two movies: Hawaiian Style, The College Years, and Wedding in Las Vegas, respectively. While there were plenty of harsh realities of Saved by the Bell, it was generally praised for how it tackled life lessons in the backdrop of Bayside High School.

The 2020 revival, however, lacked a lot of the charm the original was known for.

“Two seasons with Sheldon in a hazmat suit”: Chuck Lorre’s Crazy ‘The Big Bang Theory’ Spinoff Idea Set in the Pandemic Should Bring Back Jim Parsons
Image
Following the 15th anniversary of The Big Bang Theory, the show about misfit characters who surprisingly felt incredibly relatable despite their queerness, show creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady discussed intriguing suggestions about a reunion or a spinoff. Considering the Covid pandemic as the base of the project, Lorre and Prady shared ideas that could bring back Jim Parsons as our beloved Sheldon.

A still from The Big Bang Theory | Chuck Lorre Productions, Warner Bros. Television

Humorously proposing a spinoff concept set against the backdrop of the pandemic, the creative minds behind The Big Bang Theory suggested how the quarantine theme would have been perfection for Jim Parsons’ character. Hinting at squabbles between germophobe Sheldon and microbiologist Bernadette, Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady even proposed two seasons with Parsons in a hazmat suit.

“That moved out of the Sheldon character and into Raj”: An Unhealthy Stereotype Kunal Nayyar Portrayed in The Big Bang Theory Was Originally Meant for Jim Parsons
Image
The Big Bang Theory has been a massive fan favorite for years. Even after ending its run in 2019, it continues to win hearts thanks to the spectacular performance that Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Simon Helberg, and Kunal Nayyar delivered as the leads in the series by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady. And interestingly enough, these awkward characters actually stemmed from real-life people.

The Big Bang Theory. | Credit: CBS.

A majority of Parsons’ Sheldon Cooper’s attributes stem from a person that showrunner Lorre knew back in the ’80s. But what’s surprising is that one of these awkward qualities originally decided for Cooper actually ended up transferring to Nayyar’s Raj Koothrappali. This was the very unhealthy stereotype Koothrappali sported throughout the series: Not being able to talk around women.

Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5 Is An Amazing Sendoff But Not The End, Says Showrunner
Image
Creator Mike McMahan hints that Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 is an amazing sendoff. McMahan is telling grand stories for Star Trek: Lower Decks' characters. Despite being the final season, there is a glimmer of hope as McMahan sees it as the end of a chapter, not the end of the series.

Star Trek: Lower Decks creator Mike McMahan says season 5 "feels like an amazing sendoff... but not the end of a series." Fans of Star Trek's first animated half-hour comedy were crushed when Paramount+ announced Lower Decks season 5 would be the final season. McMahan hinted that this was a possibility while promoting Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4 last year, and the upcoming end of the voyages of the USS Cerritos is a sad affair. But also a happy one, as there are still 10 more episodes of Star Trek: Lower Decks to come in fall 2024.

Mike McMahan was a...

The B-Side – Martin Scorsese (with Jake Kring-Schreifels)
Image
Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.

Today we talk about one of the great ones: Martin Scorsese. Who’s better than Marty? Myself, Conor O’Donnell, and guest Jake Kring-Schreifels. Our B-Sides today include Italianamerican, Kundun, Bringing Out the Dead, and Silence.

We talk about a lot in this one. How to pronounce Scorsese! How to pronounce Coppola! Catholicism! Buddhism! Making films about religions in your life! This is an episode with lofty ambitions, not unlike most Scorsese pictures!

In examining Italianamerican we muse on Marty as documentarian, including the mention of an incredibly-underrated Scorsese documentary that’s hard to find: Public Speaking starring Fran Lebowitz. We reflect on the guardedness of memory by older generations. We also recount the Muddy Waters – László Kovács...

Family Of Ukrainian Crew Member Files Wrongful Death Lawsuit Against Fox News Over 2022 Attack
Image
The family of a Ukrainian translator and “fixer” filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Fox News and a series of other defendants, claiming that the network was “reckless and negligent” and has tried to conceal key information for what happened when a crew was attacked outside of Kyiv on March 14, 2022.

The lawsuit was filed by Andriy Kuvshynov and Irina Mamaysur, the parents of Oleksandra “Sasha” Kuvshynova, an independent contractor who was killed in the attack as the network crew was reporting on the latest in the Russian invasion. Cameraman Pierre Zakrzewski also was killed, and correspondent Benjamin Hall was seriously wounded.

Another plaintiff in the lawsuit, Shane Thomson, who was employed by Separ, a security firm retained by the network. He claimed that he was scapegoated in the aftermath of the attack.

The lawsuit was filed in New York Supreme Court on Thursday, the second anniversary of the attack.

Edward Bond Dies: ‘Blow-Up’ Scripter & British Playwright Whose Shows Were Banned In UK Was 89
Image
Edward Bond, the Oscar-nominated Blow-Up screenwriter and playwright whose Saved and Early Morning were banned in the UK, fueling a legal review that led to the end of stage censorship in the country, has died, his agency said. He was 89.

Casarotto Ramsay and Associates said he died Sunday but did not reveal the cause.

“Edward was one of the greatest dramatists of the 20th century,” the agency tweeted. “He made his mark upon the theatrical world with radical, thought-provoking, and unerringly original work.”

Bond’s first screenplay was the English-language dialogue for Blow-Up, Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1966 classic that starred David Hemming and Vanessa Redgrave. Earning him an Original Screenplay Oscar nom, it was the first of about a dozen film credits including Walkabout (1971) and Laughter in the Dark (1968).

Born on July 18, 1934, in London, Bond quit school as a teenager and would see his debut play, The Pope’s Wedding, produced...

Life Is Beautiful, which has taken place in the city every year for the past decade (save for a pandemic-related 2020 cancellation), brought tens of thousands of concertgoers downtown, many in the psychedelic and post-Y2K fashion that’s been so common at festivals for the past several years, though this time with a fair amount of Barbie influence, too.

The festival envelops some of Vegas...

Why Saved By The Bell Replaced Kelly & Jessie With Tori Scott
Image
The addition of Tori Scott in the final season of Saved by the Bell was a result of contract issues with Kelly and Jessie's actors, causing a jarring shift in the dynamic of the show. The Tori episodes were confusing for viewers since they were placed in the middle of the series and didn't offer a proper explanation for Jessie and Kelly's disappearances. Despite only appearing in 10 episodes, Tori became a beloved character, especially among queer fans who saw her as a strong figure and their first crush. Leanna Creel, the actress who played Tori, has received a lot of feedback from fans over the years.

During Saved by the Bell's final season, Kelly and Jessie disappeared from the cast, with newcomer Tori Scott added, causing a bizarre Tori-Saved by the Bell issue. Premiering in August 1989, Saved the Bell was actually a rebirth of the short-lived Good Morning, Miss Bliss,...

Mark-Paul Gosselaar Nearly Stopped Acting After Pitch Cancellation
Image
The failure of Fox's Pitch hit Mark-Paul Gosselaar so hard, that he nearly retired from show business.

Per Entertainment Weekly, Gosselaar was a guest at '90s Con Tampa where he appeared in a Saved by the Bell panel discussion. Reflecting on his career, Gosselaar recalls how his role as a veteran Major League Baseball player on the short-lived Fox drama resonated so much with him that the show's cancelation made him contemplate quitting as an actor.

"I wanted to quit the industry after that ended," Gosselaar recalled. "That's one of those, you feel like in your lifetime you're not going to be handed opportunities like that, so for that to pass in the fashion that it did it was sort of a gut punch. That's a role though, that I don't make light of it, but I had to go therapy with my wife.

Saved by the Bell's Mark-Paul Gosselaar Reflects on 'Problematic' Episodes
Image
Saved by the Bell's Mark-Paul Gosselaar believes some classic episodes of the popular '90s high school sitcom would not be made today.

Promoting his own Saved by the Bell-themed podcast, Gosselaar appeared on the Pod Meets World podcast hosted by TV's Boy Meets World actors Danielle Fishel, Rider Strong and Will Friedle. He discussed his time growing up in front of millions of young viewers as teen heartthrob Zack Morris every Saturday morning on NBC while reflecting on Bell storylines that come off as offensive to modern audiences. "In terms of storylines, there was a few," Gosselaar said. "There was one where I was basically whoring out Lisa Turtle. I charged people to kiss her without her consent, that was a tough one. We had to preface the [podcast] episode by saying, 'We do not condone this, we're just here to discuss it.'"

Sitcoms Critics Panned That Audiences Love
Image
Audiences often turn to critics for guidance on what to watch. However, sometimes critical reviews overlook elements that make certain sitcoms fan favorites. Series that bring in bad reviews can still have a loyal following. Although aspects like the quality of acting, directing, and writing are essential for fans, there are other factors involved when choosing a beloved show.

By nature, sitcoms are intended to be lighthearted, affording the audience a chance to unwind and relax. Comedy shows gain popularity based on their ability to be relatable and make their fans laugh. While critics are objectively trying to deconstruct sitcoms into their key components for evaluation, enthusiasts of the genre look at the same elements from a different perspective. Often, this means certain sitcoms are hated by critics but loved by audiences.

Updated on September 6th, 2023, by Ajay Aravind: Sitcoms are a particularly common genre for fans and critics to differ over.

Lingua Ignota Announces Debut Album as Reverend Kristin Michael Hayter
Image
Lingua Ignota is back… err, actually, “Lingua Ignota” is not back, but the mind behind the darkwave/noise/metal project, Kristin Hayter, is. Today, Hayter announced Saved!, the debut album under her new name, Reverend Kristin Michael Hayter, which is due on October 20th via Perpetual Flame Ministries. She also shared the album’s first single, “All My Friends Are Going to Hell.” Listen to the song below.

Saved! marks a new era in Hayter’s career, as the Lingua Ignota project finally comes to a close (she first announced that she’d be retiring the moniker last year). As the press release for the new album explains, however, this move makes perfect sense in the wider context of Hayter’s artistic output. “Mirroring her personal evolution away from pain, she sheds the moniker that made her successful for its unflinching expression of lived trauma and instead builds herself anew,...

Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
The Ouija: Origin of Evil episode of The Black Sheep was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Brandon Nally, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

The Ouija board, and that’s weejee board not weeja board with all due respect to Joe Bob Briggs, has been a constant source of fascination since it’s inception in 1890. Ghostly movements and other supernatural appearances went back further than that and there were crude inceptions before 1890 but that’s when the board as we know it came about. It was commercialized sometime later and of course; it’s showed up as a device in horror movies ever since. The Witchboard series that started in 1986 is probably the most popular series that features the spirit communicator but another, more straightforward series called Ouija is also out there. While the first one that came out in...
