John Lithgow is no stranger to playing villains. The actor has played a number of standout roles over the course of his fifty-plus-year career, particularly excelling and gaining notoriety for his memorable supporting characters. In addition to providing the voice of the villainous Lord Farquad in Shrek (2001), Lithgow played villain characters in Ricochet (1991), Bombshell (2019), Blow Out (1981), Raising Cane (1992), and the Dexter TV show. He also appeared as a larger-than-life villain in a 1993 movie starring Sylvester Stallone.
Stallone has been a fixture of the action genre for decades, getting his start with Rocky in 1976 and continuing to play the iconic boxer in a handful of sequels. He's also known for playing tortured veteran Rambo, of course, a role that dates back to 1982's First Blood. Since then, Stallone has appeared in action movies like Cobra (1986), Demolition Man (1993), Judge Dredd (1995), The Expendables (2014), Bullet to the Head (2012) and Escape Plan (2013). Both Sylvester Stallone and Jason Momoa are action heroes in their own right. While the former has been around for decades and has become synonymous with titles like the Rocky and Rambo franchises, the latter’s name will forever be tied to Game of Thrones, DC, and Dune. Back in 2012, filmmaker Walter Hill saw terrific potential in casting the adrenaline-searching stars for his project, Bullet to the Head. Whether that potential paid off is in the eyes of the beholder, and soon, Tubi is giving audiences a chance to feast their eyes on a knock-down-drag-out fight between the two leading men when the title arrives on the free streamer on February 16.

Jason Momoa's best movies and TV shows include some massive blockbusters, fan favorites, and some underseen gems. The American actor made his acting debut in the series Baywatch: Hawaii as Jason Ioane, but it wasn't until the early 2010s that he started to earn some notoriety, thanks largely to his performance as Khal Drogo on the first season of Game of Thrones. That quickly led to Momoa taking the lead in other shows as well as starring in high-profile movies.
Momoa solidified his A-list status with his role in the Dceu as Aquaman. While that era is over for him, he is confirmed to be returning to the DC universe, playing Lobo in Supergirl: World of Tomorrow. Clearly, there is a lot to be excited about with Momoa's future in movies and television, but he has already established an impressive career filled with action-hero roles, memorable villains, and some...

Sylvester Stallone has made a name for himself as one of the greatest action movie stars of all time, but plenty of highly underrated entries in his filmography need more attention. While Stallone will always be known for characters like Rocky Balboa and John Rambo, hes far from the kind of one-dimensional performer hes sometimes made out to be. Throughout his career, Stallone surprised viewers with incredible performances in heartfelt dramas, screwball comedies, and intense neo-noir thrillers.
Many of the best Sylvester Stallone movies have become touchstones in modern popular culture, while other fantastic films have been doomed to obscurity. While some maligned movies, such as comedies like Oscar, have failed to gain the reappraisal they so rightfully deserve, other underrated entries have been recognized by cinephiles yet remain woefully unknown by mainstream audiences. Across his vast and varied catalog, there were plenty of underrated Stallone movies that viewers should give a second chance.

Jason Momoa's standout film, Braven, is his highest-rated non-franchise action movie, according to Rotten Tomatoes. Despite being overshadowed by big-name franchise roles, Braven showcases an exceptional action performance by Momoa. Compared to the underwhelming Sweet Girl, Momoa's Braven offers a more engrossing and satisfying viewing experience with its solid plot.
With big-name film franchises populating Jason Momoa's acting catalog, it can be easy to miss out on some of the actor's standalone gems, which has become the case of a 2018 action thriller he helmed. Momoa has a history of doing it big in his career, securing early opportunities in popular TV titles like Baywatch (1999-2001), Stargate: Atlantis (2005-2009), and, later, Game of Thrones (2011-2012). Because of these notable roles, Momoa's film career throughout the 2000s largely fell through the cracks. Fortunately, Momoa's efforts as GoTs Khal Drogo shot him into another level of stardom, occasioning more pronounced movie breaks.

There's striking while the iron is hot, and then there's striking while the iron is much closer to room temperature. "Escape Plan," director Mikael Håfström's 2013 action film pairing Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger together for a long-awaited team-up, is the latter. By the time the duo combined their powers to play a prison security expert (Stallone) who is wrongly incarcerated (I sincerely hope writers Miles Chapman and Arnell Jesko patted themselves on the back for coming up with such a brazenly obvious dramatic irony) and has to break out of an illicit maximum-security prison with the help of a fellow inmate (Schwarzenegger), their glory days anchoring '80s and '90s macho-fests were long behind them.
Contrary to that, the first "Escape Plan" is actually pretty fun! Or, rather, it's fun in the same way that Stallone and Schwarzenegger's best action movie throwbacks are, in that the pair spend...

It’s easy to dismiss Sylvester Stallone as nothing more than an action star, even if his most iconic roles started rather humbly. It’s easy to forget that both Rocky and First Blood are straightforward character dramas that relied on emotionally nuanced performances from Stallone; they just happened to inspire massive action franchises. Stallone’s work became less exciting within the last few decades, as he began choosing roles that didn’t require as much of him as a performer. However, Stallone proved that he still had a great performance left in him with the criminally underrated 2013 thriller Bullet to the Head. Although it has been exciting to see Stallone return to familiar franchises with Rambo: Last Blood and Creed, Bullet to the Head proved that he still can create new action heroes.

Once again, the caprices of the Netflix algorithm have somehow unearthed a little talked-about near-bomb from a decade ago and pushed it right to the top of the streaming service's popularity charts. In mid-April of 2023, the Kim Jee-woon action flick "The Last Stand" with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Johnny Knoxville was Netflix's #1 movie. In this case, it is a minor work of justice, as "The Last Stand" was actually a pretty good movie. It was bright, upbeat, enjoyably violent, and boasted a fun cast of notable supporting players, including the inimitable Luis Guzmán, Jaime Alexander, and Rodrigo Santoro. Forest Whitaker played an FBI guy. The film was a modest critical success (it boasts a 61% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes), but only made $43 million at the worldwide box office. It passed from the public consciousness pretty quickly after that.
"The Last Stand" was, of course, meant to be something of a comeback for Schwarzenegger.

Arnold Schwarzenegger's The Last Stand might just be his last true '80 action movie. The success of The Terminator set Schwarzenegger on an epic run of action hits, from Commando to Predator and True Lies. For many, Arnie's stardom could only have come about during that decade, when his bodybuilder physique, thick accent and unique charisma made him a movie star unlike any other before him. It helped that Arnie excelled in action roles, and had a way with dry one-liners. His stardom waned somewhat towards the end of the '90s when the likes of Batman & Robin and End Of Days ended up as financial disappointments.
Following the success of Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines, Schwarzenegger took a surprise detour into politics. He became the Governor of California in 2003 and held the office until 2011. Naturally, that ruled him out of movie roles, outside of brief...

Sarah Shahi has been cast in the lead role of the ABC drama pilot “Judgement,” Variety has learned.
The project was originally ordered to pilot at the broadcaster in December. Shahi will star in the role of Mia Bahari in the show, which is described as a high-stakes legal soap. Shahi is also attached as a producer on the project.
Per the official character description, “We’ll meet Mia Bahari in two distinct periods of her life. In one, she’s a brilliant, successful Appeals Court judge being vetted for the U.S. Supreme Court…so long as her dark and painful secrets don’t derail the nomination. In another, she’s a young spitfire of an attorney, painfully awkward at times but ingenious when it comes to navigating the many nuances of the law. "Tulsa King" kept Freddie Poole busy. He was the stunt coordinator, doubled for Sylvester Stallone in most episodes, and handled second unit work for the Taylor Sheridan-created mob series. Poole, who's collaborated with Stallone for over a decade now, even directed a highlight in the debut season: episode 3's car chase through the streets of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Stallone's 76-year-old mobster is more calculated than quick whether he's throwing or receiving punches, which Poole helped depict in the stunts.
"Walker, Texas Ranger" launched his career, which includes projects like "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes," "The Suicide Squad," and Jeff Nichols' next film, "The Bikeriders." Like most people in the stunt world, Poole has a lot of stories to tell. "Because of the nature of the business and where it takes us and who you work with and the time that we spend together on a set or outside of work,...

At 80 years old, Walter Hill shows no signs of slowing down. The veteran director of influential action thrillers like “The Warriors,” “48 Hrs.,” and “Streets of Fire” has reinvented himself in recent years as a reliable gun-for-hire on prestige TV Westerns and crime movies like “Bullet to the Head” and “The Assignment” that fall somewhere between VOD schlock and ‘70s grindhouse revivalism.

Nobody excels at playing chill dude-bros who can also kill you with their pinkie quite like Jason Momoa. It's an archetype the former "Baywatch" actor has steadily refined so as to better fit his talents over the course of his career, starting with his breakout role on "Stargate: Atlantis" and going on to his time playing Arthur Curry in the DC Extended Universe. With "Fast X," however, Momoa will finally get the chance to portray a full-on villain, as opposed to a giant cinnamon roll who happens to be really good at murder.
Okay, so that's not entirely accurate. If you've ever indulged in the junk food cinema that is director Walter Hill's 2013 action-thriller "Bullet to the Head," then you know Momoa has played something of an antagonist before. One could also point to his role as the werewolf Connor Slaughter — yes, that's his real name, and it is...

The biggest VFX decision on “The Matrix Resurrections,” of course, was how to update the mind-blowing Bullet Time effect for the return of Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss). After all, a lot has changed since Bullet Time earned the Oscar in 2000, creating the illusion of bending time and space so Neo could perform his balletic martial arts. But thanks to new advancements in physics-based lighting and volumetric capture, it’s now a lot easier to produce amazing photorealism. Yet director Lana Wachowski didn’t want the VFX to overwhelm her richer and warmer aesthetic, in keeping with the surprisingly emotional love story between Neo and Trinity. That applied to cracking the new code for Bullet Time by Dneg.
“One of the things that was important was the aesthetic,” said Dan Glass, Dneg’s senior VFX supervisor (who previously worked on “The Matrix Reloaded” and “The Matrix Revolutions”). “It’s clearly an upgrade.

“Annette” producer Charles Gillibert is set to produce “Rodeo,” Lola Quivoron’s daring feature debut about a young woman who infiltrates an underground dirt bike community in France.
Quivoron previously directed the short film “Au Loin, Baltimore,” which played at Locarno in 2016 and, co-directed (with Antonia Buresi) “Headshot,” a documentary about today’s youth that aired on Franco-German network Arte.
“Rodeo” shot entirely on the outskirts of Bordeaux, France, and follows a young misfit and small-time thug, Julia, who is fiercely passionate about riding. One summer, she encounters a crew of dirt riders and sets off to infiltrates their male-dominated world, but an accident will compromise her ability to fit in. As its title suggests, “Rodeo” will be packed with action scenes spearheaded by Mathieu Lardot, a stunt expert who’s worked on “Jason Bourne,” “Spectre,” “Rogue City,” “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” and “Mission: Impossible – Fallout,” among others.

Not the only Halloween-ready franchise being resuscitated this month, “V/H/S/94” puts back in action the omnibus series that was last seen seven years ago with disappointing third entry “V/H/S: Viral.” This belated return lands closer in quality to the 2012 kickoff feature than the following year’s superior “V/H/S/2,” as a mixed bag of entertainingly diverse if variably successful horror shorts. Going straight to genre streaming platform Shudder on Oct. 6, it should provide fans with a satisfying enough, seasonally apt new package of macabre tales still linked by a faux-found-footage concept.
That style does not seem a natural fit for Jennifer Reeder, who made the very mannered, David Lynchian feature “Knives and Skin” two years ago. "Let's play catch the bullet." Lionsgate has released an official trailer for a direct-to-dvd quality western called Catch the Bullet, from a filmmaker you've never heard of before named Michael Feifer (you don't want to look up the films he's made before this). The story sounds like pretty much every other western as well. Gerard Butler filed a lawsuit on Friday against production company Nu Image/Millennium Films, charging that he is owed at least $10 million in backend compensation for the 2013 film “Olympus Has Fallen.”
Butler’s suit comes on the heels of another high profile legal battle between a star and a producer over compensation. On Thursday, Scarlett Johannson filed suit against Disney, citing the simultaneous release of “Black Widow’ on Disney+ and in theaters. The breach of contract lawsuit charged that Disney “intentionally induced Marvel’s breach of the agreement, without justification, in order to prevent Ms. Johansson from realizing the full benefit of her bargain with Marvel.”
Butler’s representatives, as well as Nu Image/Millennium Films, did not immediately respond to a request from TheWrap for comment.
In Butler’s lawsuit, obtained by Variety, Butler claims the producer Nu Age/Millennium Films had underestimated the domestic and foreign receipts for...
