Oscars 2015: what the winners said
Miles Teller in Whiplash (2014)
Humility, humour and thanking mothers

Speeches from the winners at the 87th Academy Awards.

Best Film

Sean Penn announced that the top award went to Birdman.

Speaking backstage later in the press room, director Alejandro G Iñárritu said of being Mexican: “Well, look at this room. I don’t know how many nationalities are in this room, but I don’t feel different to anybody of you here.

“You know, it can be from any continent, from any language. I don’t care. I as an artist, as a human, as a filmmaker, I cannot have these stupid borders, flags, and passports. Those are a concept that were invented by a human society.

“But, honestly, naked, in tighty whities we will be the same. And I have never felt that different. So for me to make films in the United States, or in Africa, or in Spain, or in Mexico, I’m talking...

You know, it can be from any continent, from any language. I don’t care. I feel very relate to any of you. Yrf Collaborates With YouTube Creators For Kill Dil Promotions
Content is King. And Yash Raj Films is going all guns out to target Gen Next for their newly released film – Kill Dil. They have collaborated with three YouTube Creators to create digital friendly content. While two YouTube creators have come up with cover versions of the film’s two songs – ‘Sajde’ and ‘Bol Beliya’, The Viral Fever Videos team has shot a hilarious interview with the film’s cast.

Aakash Gandhi of “88 Keys To Euphoria” has created an acoustic version of the romantic number ‘Sajde’, which has been infused with rich Indian percussive elements and progressive art of beat-boxing, and crooned by Pratik Rao and Jonita Gandhi. On the other hand, Malaysia based “Goldkartz” has created an electrofied cover version of ‘Bol Beliya’. The songs havebeen originally composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and the lyrics have been penned by Gulzar.

31 scary TV episodes that truly terrified us
From The Twilight Zone to Penny Dreadful, Doctor Who and more, Den Of Geek’s writers revisit the TV episodes that truly terrify them…

It’s Halloween! Icicles are glistening from window sills. Chestnuts are roasting on open fires. North Pole elves are… hang on, no. None of that nice, fluffy stuff is happening. At Halloween, demonic creatures hunt for flesh, monsters creep out of their graves, and TV does its level best to freak us all the hell out.

In the spirit of all that, we asked our writers to select and share the TV episodes, horror or otherwise, that have made them whimper with fear. Here they all are, 31 of them, because, well, at Halloween, we like things to add up to 31.

Note that this isn’t a Top 10, or a Best Of, nor is it listed in order of scariness. It’s a collection of the particular...

Under The Dome Season 2 continues to be a mess
Grace Victoria Cox, Alexander Koch

Stephen King’s works have been adapted into a number of features over the years, but few stories of his have been explored in a television medium. Last summer, CBS added to the latter list with an adaptation of the King novel Under The Dome, focusing on the town of Chester’s Mill as it saw itself cut off from the rest of the world by a mysterious clear dome. The show’s second season drew to a close on September 22nd, and while it began with some promise, the season undid itself with inconsistent writing and plot developments that had no connection with each other, among other problems.

The biggest issue of Under the Dome’s second season has been the plot contrivances. Coincidences have driven a lot of the story forward in the season, and the most glaring example has been the Zenith arc.

In Retrospect: Kal Ho Naa Ho on it’s Tenth Year Anniversary
Ten years ago to this very day, the hilarious, heartfelt and hopeful film Kal Ho Naa Ho released. This film soon became a fast favourite of mine and to this day it is still my number 1 Bollywood movie. With the amazing chemistry between the principal cast (Shahrukh Khan, Preity Zinta and Saif Ali Khan) to the witty one-liners to the soulful life philosophy underscoring the entire story, Khnh has everything one would want to see in a movie.

But for those Bollywood fans less Khnh-obsessed than I, it seems the 10th anniversary is the perfect time to look back and reflect on what exactly it was that made Kal Ho Naa Ho a standout film that – in my humble opinion – stands the test of time.

Most Comedic Scene

Kal Ho Naa Ho is filled to the brim with funny moments. The humour is sharp, slick and witty. With brilliant comedic...

Happy Birthday Shah Rukh Khan! BollySpice celebrates the Super Star to each letter of his name
Once upon a time, on November the 2nd, 1965, a Super Star was born.

The Bollywood Badshaah, the King of Bollywood, the Raj of Simran’s dreams – however you may relate to him has turned 48.

To celebrate Shah Rukh Khan’s birthday, BollySpice explores the contribution the Super Star has made by celebrating each letter of the Super Star’s name:

“S” – Swades: 2004, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker

Srk essays the role of Mohan Bhargava, a USA based project worker at Nasa who finds himself (re) discovering his Indian roots during a visit back to mother India.

“H” – “Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam”: 2002, directed by K.S Adhiyaman

Playing the role of Gopal, Srk portrays a jealous and possessive husband who eventually realises the folly of his ways.

“A” – Anjaam: 1994, directed by Rahul Rawail

One of Srk’s earlier films, this was the very first film in which Srk and Madhuri Dixit starred together in.

‘Breaking Bad’ Postmortem: Meta Commentary
Even though it’s only been a short time since the final Breaking Bad episode aired, much has already been discussed and dissected about the way the series ended. (My two cents: mechanical but brilliant, like its lead character.) Whether you loved it, hated it, or were indifferent to it, the finale — and the entire last season — followed the time honored troupe that many shows before it did: present a meta-commentary of the series as a whole.

That commentary could be the main thesis of the show (the reason it’s on the air), lip service for the fans, the pointing out of societal shortcomings, or all three but it’s usually done in a very self-aware way. And it’s a luxury that writer’s rooms have once they know in advance of a show’s end date.

Vince Gilligan and company were quite aware that most of the...

Special Report: From the Iifa Awards Green Carpet!
The green carpet became a runway for the sexiest stars in Bollywood to strut their stuff into the 14th annual Iifa (International Indian Film) awards ceremony.

Headed by the badshah of Bollywood, “King Khan”, the procession of fashionistas attracted a rambunctious crowd.

Shah Rukh Khan looked dashing as ever, wearing a crisp black suit and a smile that made every female in the vicinity weak at the knees – including Mani’s mum!

Heads turned as Mr. Khan walked down the carpet, not just on account of his slick sense of style, but also because of the smart black leather sling wrapped around his right arm. Only the King of Bollywood could turn an injury into a fashion statement! Insert Picture 1 – Shahrukh Khan

What he didn’t quite manage to pull off however, was the unkempt beard and long hair, which made him resemble an extra from Pirates of the Caribbean.

Grammys Honor Carole King, The Temptations, Ravi Shankar
Shankar Mahadevan
Los Angeles -- Ravi Shankar passed away in December before he could attend The Recording Academy's Special Merit Awards celebration where he was to receive a lifetime achievement award. But the 91-year-old sitar master, Indian music promoter and friend to The Beatles got the call a few days before he passed away, and that meant everything to his family.

"I was very excited to hear about the lifetime achievement award a week before my dad passed away, one day before he went into surgery," Shankar's daughter, Norah Jones, said in an email to the Associated Press a few hours before the ceremony. "He knew about it and was very happy, and also that he and my sister, Anoushka, were both nominated in the same category for a Grammy (this year) was a special thing as well. We all miss him and are very proud of him. I will forever...

TV on Tap: How "Arrested Development" Transforms the TV Series, E! Loves Whitney Cummings, Means It, and ABC is Enthusiastic about Joss Whedon's "S.H.I.E.L.D."
We get a whole hour of Cyndi Lauper on Saturdays thanks to her new reality show, Still So Unusual.

News

The upcoming season of Arrested Development will feature 14 episodes that each tell their own story. Each one will have elements that connect to each other, eventually giving a bigger picture when the whole season has been watched. As Alyssa Rosenberg of Think Progress notes, that makes it the first TV show that can be watched in any order, making it a show that can be watched in a nonlinear fashion, something that could only be achieved on a streaming service like Netflix.

Apparently, ABC chief Paul Lee was so enthusiastic about Joss Whedon's S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot when talking to reporters at the TCA that its difficult to imagine it not making the fall schedule.

You can't fire Britney Spears, she quits!

I may have run out of patience with Whitney Cummings' sitcoms,...

Reader Rank: 2012's 007 Mania featuring the Bond Girls
Though we've really just begun our Year in Review of 2012 no such survey would be feel complete without at least a perfunctory visit to the shadowy world of super spy Bond, James Bond. Skyfall, the 23rd official James Bond feature released to coincide with the franchise's 50th anniversary is already the top grossing Bond of all time with $1 billion at the global box office. That's enough cash to get any Bond Villain (or Bond Villain parody) rubbing his fingers together with greed "one beeeeeeeiiiillion dollars"

Bérénice Marlowe as "Severine" in Skyfall

Just before Skyfall came out I asked readers to submit their own rankings of the Bond films. It's such a big tallying project that I think I'll have to save the main results for the Skyfall DVD release (so if you still want to submit your ballot email it to me with "Bond Rank" in the title line and...

Partially based upon his experiences in Southeast Asia, he co-authored Tracers, a play seen in the Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago and London stages, to great acclaim; It subsequently won the prestigious Drama Desk and L.A. Drama Critics Awards.

The writing of screenplays seemed like a natural progression and his writing eventually began attracting the attention of many Hollywood producers.

Since then, Lettich has become known as expert in testosterone-driven action extravaganzas, many of the films starring some of the silver screen´s best-loved slugfest protagonists: Sylvester Stallone (Sheldon shared screenwriting credit with Sly in the third cinematic episode of the Rambo series,...

Nycc 2012 Interview: Bruce Timm talks ‘The Dark Knight Returns Part 2′
As stated before, Bruce Timm was at the 2012 New York Comic Con talking about The Dark Knight Returns Part 2, in which he is the producer of. The Dark Knight Returns Part 2 is the animated sequel to the renowned film, The Dark Knight Returns. You can watch what he says below or read the entire article after the video.

What was the main challenge, especially with the second part, in keeping with the vision of Frank Miller but also doing it the way you guys saw it?

The biggest consideration in doing part 2 was that after all these years, the most controversial part of the comic is literally Frank Miller’s Superman. It’s at the point where people think, ‘Oh, it’s Frank Miller. Clearly he hates Superman, he loves Batman and hates Superman. And I don’t know if that’s really true, I think its probably an exaggeration of reality.

Shah Rukh, Katrina and Anushka attend Press Conference for Jab Tak Hai Jaan
The lead actors of the upcoming film Jab Tak Hai Jaan came together to participate in a press conference which was organised by Yash Raj Films Studios. Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma took questions from various representatives of the Indian media about the film, as well as its director Mr Yash Chopra, who sadly passed away just before its scheduled release during the Diwali festival.

Considering he has worked with him for the past 20 years, the passing away of Yashji was a jolt but Srk insists that he would have rather had people celebrate his work. “Yashji passing away has been shocking and saddening but what Yashji would have wanted us to do would have been to celebrate his cinema, his work, his life and the happiness that he has spread through his work. And that is what we are going to do,” he said adding that...

L.A. Today: Guadalajara Ff Comes to L.A.
Los Angeles gets better and better!  The weekend began with a screening that the local arthouse-state-of-the-art-theater Downtown Independent held of Rock The Boat: The L.A. River Expedition, an enlightening look at what L.A. could be if it took back the river as a public place for kayaking, sunbathing, drinking coffee at its cafes and its possible contribution to water conservation efforts in California.  Saturday began with a swim at the gym up the block and then a visit to the art galleries on Washington and So. La Cienega where former filmmaker Seth Carmichael announced his gallery's move to the just emerging art scene at La Brea and Washington and Andrea Bowers gave a great show at Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects linking today's Occupy movement with that of the Wobblies (International Workers Party) in the 1890s and ended with Cuban salsa at Los Globos in Echo Park where we danced the night away with local Latinos.  On Sunday 100,000 bicycle riders rode the streets of L.A. during the 5th CiLAvia, an event which originated in Chile.  In the city's biggest block party, we had the chance to eat the best tacos in town at King Taco at Soto and Cesar Chavez Blvd. in Ela, a hard choice between it and Chinatown or the local Thai and Korean places along the way and food trucks of all ethnicities at the various hubs.  A Great Event!

Next weekend Free Screenings of Latino films and workshops will be offered by the Muestra de Cine GuadaLajara (The Guadalajara International Film Festival and The University of Guadalajara Foundation, USA) at AMC Universal City Walk.  RSVP Now to get a seat because tickets are going fast!.  The Red Carpet Opening Ceremony at the Globe Theater, 100 Universal City Plaza kicks off the event this Friday October 12 and is honoring Alfonso Arau and Jorge Camara, one of Hollywood's most respected international journalists and VP of Hollywood Foreign Press Association with a special tribute to Lupe Ontiveros, award-winning actress, producer, activist and visionary.

With the absence this year of Laliff which is spreading its wings in the L.A. Unified School District, teaching filmmaking to kids and is spreading out screenings throughout the year, the appearance of Ficg here in L.A. is filling a gap.   I am spotting a new trend with festivals organizing with universities.  In Havana it is with Eictv. The new organization, Film Festival Academy, which just debuted with the New York Film Festival, has festivals and academic studies combining forces.  Ficg has always has the University component as has Miami Iff and San Diego Latino Film Festival.  As recognition of the next generation of future filmmakers becomes more wide spread, this element will strenghten the festivals stature in their communities.

Guadalajara Ff (Ficg) and the University are also offering Latino TV as a link to the Hispanic community of Los Angeles on Channel 31.2 (Udg TV/ L.A. California and TV Abierta, Universidad de Guadalajara (Udgtv.com)  Monday to Sunday it offers more than 19 hours of continuous programming of original programming for children, youth, family in news, sports and opinioun. and as Ivan Trujillo, the director of Ficg announced, there will also be a Festival of Books in Spanish called LeaLA May 17-19, 2013 at L.A. Convention Center.

The University of Guadalajara Foundation in the United States of America (Udg Foundation-usa) is made up of academic and social leaders and is privately supported by individuals, foundations and corporations to bloster high quality academic and cultural activities of the Udg, Los Angeles to help Mexican and other Latinos living in this region improve their quality of life and enhance their cultural identity.

Ficg itself will hold its 28th edition March 1 - 9, 2013 in Guadalajara.  As Mexico's most important film festival, it hosts the Berlinale Talent Campus, a Doculab and Writing with Light workshops, Cannes Market's Producers Network and last year represented 45 countries in 504 screenings on 32 screens where it screened 281 films of which 97 were Mexican for the public of more than 142,000 and for 3,504 registered industry participants, 875 journalists, 1,106 companies registered at the industry offices. Competition of Iberamerican and Mexican features, docs and shorts, Lgbt competition for the Premio Maguey, Works in Progress: Guadalajara Construye 7 and so many other events, and yet is an intimate gathering where everyone can talk to everyone.  See you there!!

China goes Zombie in Fear Me Not?!
From the teaser art we first thought Jil Wong’s first film as director Fear Me Not was a straight up slash horror, but reading through the (very) long plot summary for it turns out we may well have a Chinese Zomb horror on our hands!? Swansea vs Liverpool – Match Preview
Whilst ‘King’ Kenny will be making the trip to South Wales for Liverpool’s final game of the season, he won’t be the only king in attendance at the Liberty Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Rodgers gave out a rallying cry to the Swansea fans to dress up as ‘The King’ for the Swans final game of the season and it’s a message which has been received loud and clear, however the visitors will be aiming to crash the party atmosphere on the Welsh coast.

5 Fantasy Comic Book Tie-In’s We Wish Existed
There’s a sort of social stigma attached to tie-ins of any sort, really. There’s something about the idea of an expanded Universe that many argue results in an unavoidable bastardisation of the source material.

Let me just define the term ‘tie-in’ within the context of this article. Tie-ins exist in across all forms of media and in any direction. You’ve got movie to comic book, comic book to movie (more common), movie to game, game to comic book, even comic book to musical album (admittedly rare, but if you listen to Coheed and Cambria, you’ll know what I mean). Some are great; most are unfortunately mediocre, but they exist in abundance, thanks to that twatty business term you may know as ‘synergy’.

I don’t think tie-ins themselves are the issue; when done right, they can provide a wealth of satisfaction, and new depths to an already well-loved character or setting.

Don 2 English Trailer and Poster Revealed- Srk channels his inner Bond
The final big release 2011 will be King Khan’s Don2, which is a sequel to the remake of the 1978 Amitabh Bachchan starrer, and although a pretty big hit when it came out in 2006, in my opinion the original was “still streets ahead” (Save Community People!). With a leggy Priyanka Chopra holding a shiny gun and Shahrukh Khan wearing a tuxedo’ed growl, the King is most definitely back

Now unlike most film nerds, I quite look forward to remakes, sequels, reboots and re-imaginations. For my money they could remake E.T., if you don’t want to watch it, you can always stick to the original but I know that is probably not the most popular of opinions. The problems I had with the Don remake was that it still had too much of an early 2000 Matrix hangover (lots of leather) and their need to go dark and gritty changed...

Don 2 Music Review
Compared with the hype surrounding Shahrukh Khan’s Ra.One, his second and last release for the 2011, Don 2: The Chase Continues (Don 2) makes its entry with a whisper rather than bang. While Don: The Chase Begins Again (Don 1) had immense pressure on the makers to aesthetically re-create the yesteryear favourite, the sequel has not been subject to such expectations. Don 2 is an entirely new and different concept, opening the makers to a goldmine of creative opportunities. Arguably, this applies to the music directors, Shankar-Eshaan-Loy (Sel), more so than the reminder of the film’s cast and crew.

Don 2 sees Sel reprise their role as music directors while Javed Akhtar reprises his as lyricist. No surprises there as all Excel Entertainment ventures have featured the lyrical and musical combination of Sel and Javed Akhtar exclusively since their advent in 1999. The album comprises of 11 tracks and...

Iifa Day 2
The day started off with the extremely eventful arrival of Shah Rukh Khan from the airport to the Fairmont Royal York. His flight had been delayed by several hours and so all of his fans, young and old, waited with bated breath. The screams heard and the pandemonium that occurred once Shah Rukh entered the building had to be experienced to be understood, but suffice it to say that he truly is the King of Hearts.

Once inside the hotel, media personnel were treated with a chance to see Srk once more at the Kingdom of Dreams press conference. Along with Shiamak Davar, Shah Rukh is a brand ambassador for the stunning modern attraction in India. And he is the perfect choice – Kingdom of Dreams is larger than life, as is the charismatic persona of Srk. He fielded questions from the crowd.

He still loves theatre (his favourite play that...
