Deadpool/Batman isn't even Marvel and DC's wildest crossover
Image
The announcement of a Batman and Deadpool crossover collaboration from Marvel and DC slated for later this year is one of the most surprising news stories from out of the comics industry in a very long time. Although the two publishers are generally viewed as bitter rivals, the animosity is exaggerated by fans for the most part, and Marvel and DC have actually worked together in the past (more on than later).

As surprising and exciting as the idea of Batman and Deadpool (and potentially the wider Marvel and DC universes at some point) intersecting is for comics fans, even a quick look at the long history of comic book crossovers shows that this isn't even the most bizarre crossover event put out by either Marvel or DC.

We'll be doing more of a deep dive into some of wildest Marvel and DC crossovers a little later, but even just...

Marvel and DC Comics' crossover is a moment decades in the making
Image
It’s been over 20 years since Marvel and DC Comics did a crossover. The last time it happened was 2003 in the Jla/Avengers. Before that, it was DC vs. Marvel, which had matches like Wolverine vs. Lobo, Superman vs. Hulk, and Captain America vs. Batman. After so long, both companies have decided to collaborate again in an event that no one saw coming. It’ll be the “Merc With A Mouth” Deadpool and “The Dark Knight” Batman.

The recently-announced crossover titled Deadpool/Batman will be written by Zeb Wells (Amazing Spider-Man and Deadpool and Wolverine) with art by Greg Capullo (Batman and Wolverine: Revenge). Together, they’ll create a one-shot where Wade Wilson is on a job that sends him to Gotham City. And, shocking to no one, Batman doesn't have the patience for Wade's shenanigans. However, according to Marvel.com, thanks to The Joker, the two will team up to stop him.

‘Iyanu’ Creator Roye Okupe & Creative Team On “Weaving The Emotional Journey” With Cultural Authenticity & Empathy
Image
Animation has always been one of the best mediums for storytellers to reach young audiences, especially for a young Roye Okupe who says it was his “first love”. After creating a successful graphic novel series, and a meeting with Lion Forge Entertainment facilitated by Impact X Capital’s Erica Dupuis, Okupe managed to make his dream of creating an animated series come true.

Based on Okupe’s graphic novel series Iyanu: Child of Wonder, the Cartoon Network series follows Iyanu, an orphaned teenager living on the outskirts of civilization who discovers she has divine powers and a destiny to save the ancient kingdom of Yorubaland. Okupe’s dream was to infuse the culture he grew up with into the series, along with the help of some veterans of the animation industry – story editor Brandon Easton, writer Kerri Grant and supervising director Vincent Edwards.

Although the first season has yet to have its finale,...

'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Sequel Delay Hits Fans With a Real Bummer
Image
Fans looking forward to the sequel to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem will have to wait a little longer, as the film has been delayed nearly a year. 2023's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem was the relaunch the 40-year-old franchise needed, giving a new animated spin on the heroes in a half-shell that emphasized the teenage aspects of the characters. It was easily the best-reviewed entry in the franchise, garnering 95% on Rotten Tomatoes and bringing in $181 million at the worldwide box office, which, combined with merchandise revenue, made it one of the most successful entries in the franchise.

Variety reports that Paramount Pictures has delayed the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem sequel from its announced 2026 release date to Sept. 17, 2027. Its original release date, Oct. 9, 2026, has since been taken by another Paramount and Nickelodeon animated production, The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender. This delay now means the...

A tiny asterisk in Thunderbolts* became Marvel's secret weapon
Image
There was a time when what happened in the comics felt like it would be forever. There was a real set of stakes. Or maybe I just felt that way because I was a naïve kid who didn't know how comics worked yet.

I first got into comics through the Ninja Turtles, then Spider-Man during the clone saga, and Superman at the time of his "death."; yep, 1992 was a big year for comics for me. In 1993, Bane broke Batman's back, which led to Jean Paul Valley taking over as Batman. In 1994, Kyle Rayner replaced Green Lantern. In 1995, Artemis replaced Wonder Woman, and Connor Hawke replaced Oliver Queen as Green Arrow. In 1996, Ben Reilly replaced Peter Parker as the main Spider-Man, and later that year, Onslaught killed the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, and a slew of other heroes, and the big new team in town was the Thunderbolts, who came about to replace the fallen heroes.

This '80s Crime Movie Spoof Has One Of The Strangest Premises Of All Time
Image
The concept for James Lorinz's proposed crime movie "Swirlee" makes for a strange elevator pitch. Do you remember Mister Softee? Kids on the East coast likely know about him. He was the smiling mascot of a local ice cream truck company, a man with a gigantic soft-serve ice cream cone for a head. Well, what if Mister Softee was a real human being whose ice-cream-head was the result of a rare medical condition? Also, what if he was in deep with the mob? It's like Martin Scorsese's deeply personal fave "Mean Streets," but with an ice-cream-head man! It practically writes itself! The title? "Swirlee!"

That was the thought of actor and filmmaker James Lorinz in the late 1980s. Lorinz may be best known for playing Jeffrey Franken, the lead character in "Basket Case" director Frank Henenlotter's seminal classic "Frankenhooker." He also played a doorman in the revolting...

From Animatronics to Wiki-Diving: How ‘The Legend of Ochi’ Created Its Title Character
Image
Sometimes, filmmaking can really be an excuse for nerds to research stuff. Writer and director Isaiah Saxon spent years developing “The Legend of Ochi” to be a fantasy adventure that looks and feels like it could take place in one last undiscovered corner of the world, one where the mysterious primate Ochi navigate living on the fringes of human civilization. This required a lot of preparation and planning, collaboration with artists and designers and puppeteers, but also a lot of Wikipedia diving.

“ I’ve become an amateur primatologist through the course of making [the film],” Saxon told IndieWire. “In the larger picture of writing towards these zoological elements, [I’m looking] at everything that’s on the Internet. I’m reading Wikipedia articles about the one venomous primate and how does that actually work? I’m reading about Tarsiers and lemurs and the sociological structures of Bonobos.”

All of that research eventually coalesced into the Ochi,...

35 Years Ago, An Unsuspecting Comic Book Movie Became A Box Office Sensation
Image
(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)

"One of my first calls was to Peter Chernin, who went on to run Fox for a long time. But Peter goes, 'Are you guys out of your minds?'" That's producer Kim Dawson recalling to The Hollywood Reporter in 2015 how things went in the early going when they were trying to secure funding for "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" in the late '80s. "Howard the Duck was just released. Nobody felt like a comic book could be converted into a live-action character."

Indeed, this was a very different time for comic book movies in Hollywood. Richard Donner's "Superman" had come and gone. That was viewed as more of a one-off. There was no reason to believe a movie about walking,...

The Big Bang Theory's Creator Came Up With The '80s Most Radical Theme Song
Image
"The Big Bang Theory" co-creator Chuck Lorre has quite a few impressive accomplishments under his belt. He's contributed to several award-winning shows, working as a young writer on shows like "Roseanne" and "Charles in Charge" before moving into co-creating and executive producing hits like "Dharma & Greg," "Two and a Half Men," and "The Big Bang Theory." He's a television industry titan who has become one of the greats in sitcom history, but he also has a very surprising credit as well -- he was the writer of the original "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" theme song. That's right, the impossibly catchy theme song from the 1987 CBS cartoon series came courtesy of the same man who introduced the world to Sheldon Cooper and popularized the phrase "Bazinga!"

The story behind the creation of the "Ninja Turtles" theme song is almost as magical as a bunch of turtles getting turned into ninja...

Despite Being the World’s Most Popular Battle Royale, Fortnite Originally Started Out as a PvE Title
Image
The success of Fortnite in the video game industry is quite a story. Released back on July 17, 2017 for PCs, the game has seen a ton of evolution since its admittedly barebones launch.

Its popularity remains uncontested, and the game routinely features content updates and collabs with other IPs, which boosts its overall appeal amongst the masses. However, things were a lot different during the first few months of the game, and Epic Games initially planned to release it as a PvE focused title.

Fortnite, or as it was known before, Fortnite: Save the World, was a looter shooter, free-to-play title focused on PvE gameplay. It incorporated elements from previously established titles such as Left 4 Dead and Minecraft, combining the co-op aspect of the former with the on-the-go building aspect of Minecraft.

Indies Are Pushing the Video Games Industry Forward, But at What Cost?
Image
The video game industry is in the middle of a crisis. Budgets for big releases are ballooning out of control with games like Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War (2020) costing up to $700 million to produce. The developer workforce has also been ravaged, with dozens of studios closing, amounting to over 10,000 layoffs in 2024 alone. Pair that with the fact that many of the titles have flopped — like Concord, whose servers didn’t even last as long as a free trial for Hulu — major questions have arisen about the health and...

Meet the company making Skibidi Toilet a toy-aisle bestseller
Image
In spring 2023, DaFuq!?Boom! became one of the most-watched YouTube channels in the entire world. Between January and May, it shot from getting 3 million views a month to nearly 3 billion, and cemented one word in the minds of all those hundreds of millions of viewers:

Skibidi.

Plagued by recurring nightmares of hands and heads coming out of toilets, animator Alexey Gerasimov (the creator behind DaFuq!?Boom!) had decided to exorcise them by turning them into short animated clips. In the very first, 11-second Skibidi Toilet video, the viewer swings through what looks like an office building (complete with tiny suited man) and into its bathroom, where a head pops out of the toilet singing a popular TikTok mashup of Timbaland’s “Give It to Me” and Biser King’s “Dom Dom Yes Yes.”

The next few videos were similarly simple, and set the tone for Skibidi Toilet as a lo-fi,...

Some of them have careers dating back decades, while others are best known for more modern work.

By sheer coincidence, many actors involved with the franchise are well-known for featuring in fantasy, sci-fi, and horror works. The stars of Chicago Pd have had major roles in franchises like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the Arrowverse, and in movies like Monkey Shines. These performances are all excellent, and show the range of the long-running police procedural's cast.

How Sonic Became A $1 Billion Franchise (And What We Can Learn From It)
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

The box office got off to a relatively quiet start in 2025. "Mufasa: The Lion King" topped the charts in its third weekend of release, triumphing over "Sonic the Hedgehog 3," as the two have been duking it out for supremacy ever since they hit theaters in mid-December. Setting aside the bizarre conspiracy theory that recently emerged over this box office battle, "Mufasa" won the day. However, it's Paramount Pictures that now gets to celebrate as the "Sonic" franchise passed a major milestone.

With "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" adding another $21.2 million in its third weekend of release, in addition to posting strong numbers overseas, its running total stands at $336.2 million worldwide as of this writing. Combined with the grosses from both 2020's "Sonic the Hedgehog" ($319.7 million worldwide) and 2022's "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" ($405.1 million worldwide), the films have now collectively earned $1.06 billion worldwide.

5 Years Ago, Robert Downey Jr.'s Big Post-Iron Man Movie Was A Box Office Disaster
Image
(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)

"At that point I was bulletproof. I was the guru of all genre movies." Those are the words of Robert Downey Jr. in 2023 as "Oppenheimer" was making its way to theaters. That film went on to win "Best Picture" and made nearly $1 billion worldwide. It also won Rdj an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. The point in time he was talking about? Around 2017 when he was cast in a film called "The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle," later shortened to just "Dolittle."

The resounding success of "Oppenheimer" cemented Downey as an unquestioned A-lister, even outside of the confines of "Iron Man" in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His turn as Tony Stark for more than a decade revived his career beyond even wildest expectations.

What Went Wrong With Michael Bay’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Movies
Image
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise has continued to adapt to new territory despite its struggle with continuity over the years — but this only serves to highlight what went wrong with Michael Bay's movies. Adapted from popular comic books, these heroes, named after Renaissance artists, have inspired numerous films and TV adaptations of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Bay served as producer on the 2014 reboot, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, though he did not direct either of them.

Michael Bay's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise has some big flaws, and falls victim to his very distinctive style, which is characterized by quick cuts and sweeping camera movements. Subsequently, Michael Bay's motion capture films failed to reach the same heights as his Transformers revival, despite earning the Tmnt franchise's highest returns — with the 2014 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles earning over $493 million and the...

Sorry, Marvel. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Are Set to Rule 2025 With a Groundbreaking Comic
Image
2025 is already shaping up to be an exciting time for fans of comic books and iconic heroes like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from the 1980s and 1990s. Fueled by growing nostalgia for that era, comic publishers are pulling out all the stops to satisfy the public’s demand, reviving and reimagining beloved legacy titles from decades past.

Few publishers are better poised to capitalize on nostalgia culture than Disney's Marvel Comics. With a vast library of iconic IPs, including Spider-Man, Daredevil, Fantastic Four, and X-Men, crafted by trailblazing writers and artists, Marvel's influence is ubiquitous. But Idw's latest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot by writer Jason Aaron and a variety of artists is challenging Marvel's place at the top of comics.

It's rare to find adult comic book fans – the same enthusiasts driving the genre's nostalgia movement – whose formative years weren't shaped by Marvel in some way.

‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Is 40 — And Somehow Bigger Than Ever
Image
It takes a lot of work to keep a franchise alive for decades, and nobody knows this better than the co-creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Kevin Eastman. For 40 years, Eastman has shepherded the IP that he and co-writer Peter Laird launched back in 1984, although there’s been ups and downs. Under their company, Mirage Studios, the duo famously self-published Tmnt as an independent comic after being rejected by big names like Marvel and DC, and helped kickstart a movement of grassroots, creator-led books that would become big in the Nineties.

Jim Carrey is the Best & Worst Part of this Beloved Christmas Classic
Image
Even if it's been more 24 years since it hit movie theaters in 2000, Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas endures as Christmas classic for those who watched it as children. It isn't hyperbolic to say that this adaptation of Dr. Seuss' timeless Christmas book owes its entire legacy to Jim Carrey, who famously donned some of the most intricate and painful prosthetics in movie history to bring the green grouch to life. To this day, people fondly remember Carrey's performance and quote some of his more memorable lines.

But like anything that's been heralded as a nostalgic staple these days, the sheer reverence for The Grinch begs the question of whether it was actually a good movie, or if it was just put on a pedestal by those blinded by rose-colored, holiday-themed spectacles. This is especially the case when the movie's contemporary lukewarm reception is taken into account. Devoid of...

Tony Shalhoub’s Longest-Running TV Show After Monk Was Just As Good And Gave Him His Fourth Emmy
Image
Tony Shaloub is well-known for his starring role in the police procedural comedy, Monk, yet the actor's other long-running show, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, should be just as popular, especially after his Emmy win. Shalhoub has been in the movie and TV business for decades now, after earning his breakout role on the sitcom, Wings. He has garnered acclaim for projects such as Men in Black II, The Man Who Wasn't There, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. However, audiences are most likely to recognize him for Monk, which aired for eight seasons from 2002 to 2009.

Although Monk could be considered Shalhoub's claim to television fame, the actor starred in another series that is just as hilarious and captivating. Initially released in 2017, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is a dramedy series created by Amy Sherman-Palladino of Gilmore Girls fame, and produced by Prime Video.
