It’s been three and a half years since Gabby Petito made headlines around the world after she vanished during a cross-country road trip she was taking with her fiance Brian Laundrie. Now, a new three-part docuseries, “American Murder: Gabby Petito,” goes beyond the headlines to reveal the reality of a 22-year-old woman enmeshed in an abusive relationship.
After Petito disappeared in August 2021, Laundrie returned to his parents’ house in North Port, Fla., where he refused to discuss Petito’s whereabouts. Laundrie’s refusal to speak to the police caused a media firestorm, which escalated when Petito’s body was found in Wyoming’s Bridger-Teton National Forest on Sept. 19, 2021. An autopsy concluded that Petito died by homicide. Laundrie, who was eventually revealed to be the killer, died by suicide in October 2021.
The series, directed by Julia Willoughby Nason and Michael Gasparro, features Peitito’s family and several of her close friends.

Netflix has readied its third installment in its “American Murder” documentary franchise following 2020’s “American Murder: The Family Next Door” and 2024’s “American Murder: Laci Peterson.” This next one looks back at the 2021 murder of 22-year-Gabby Petito by her fiance, Brian Laundrie, while the young couple was on a road trip across the United States.
Petito and Laundrie were documenting their “van life” journey on social media. Petito was killed in August; Laundrie’s parents were suspected of helping to cover up the murder. Laundrie shot and killed himself two months later.
“While taking viewers on a journey through Gabby and Brian’s final days together, the series will unveil the tragic reality behind their Insta-perfect life and reveal painful moments where their story might have taken a different turn,” per Netflix.

The latest entry in Netflix's American Murder series is certainly not for the faint of heart. While American Murder: Laci Petersen isn't particularly gory, the documentary's haunting images, dark subject matter, and suburban setting bring the film's central murder home in deeply unsettling ways. Rehashing the brutal mystery behind the pregnant Laci Petersen's 2002 disappearance and the conviction of her husband for the murder of his wife and unbold child is likewise equally heartbreaking. For those who enjoy taking a deep dive into American crime, the streamer has a ton of options. In particular, those who found themselves on the edge of their seats following Laci's case will be equally enthralled by the previous entry in Netflix's ongoing series, 2020's American Murder: The Family Next Door.

Back in 2022, Netflix struck gold with yet more real-life stories of human misery in "Worst Roommate Ever." But this was no regular true crime docuseries. Compiling several tales of woe involving people and their incomprehensibly unhinged roomies, this show came produced by horror standard bearer Blumhouse and was a big enough hit to spawn a second season, which arrived in June 2024. This follow-up season came complete with episode titles that shrewdly evoked the spirit of gossip mag headlines, such as "My Bff Tried to Kill Me," "Housemate from Hell," and "The Lethal Landlord" — ensuring Netflixers binged themselves into oblivion for a second time.
Now, the streamer is at it again, with a spin-off series entitled "Worst Ex Ever," which, astoundingly, is not about my last girlfriend. No, as you might have guessed, this is yet another compilation of unbelievable tales of the unhinged, this time on the theme of exes.

Who hasn't binged away an embarrassing amount of time reliving the horrific experiences of other people via one of the many true crime documentaries available in the streaming era? True crime will seemingly never go out of fashion, which is good news for Netflix as the company has consistently pumped out documentaries recounting tales of murder and missing persons ever since the streamer had a mega-hit with 2015's "Making a Murderer."
This year alone, Netflixers have flocked to the tale of online dating turning deadly with "Lover, Stalker, Killer," and have binged themselves into a stupor with "What Jennifer Did" — a true crime doc that used nightmarish AI images. Now, a new obsession has arrived in the form of "American Murder: Laci Peterson." It follows 2020's "American Murder: The Family Next Door," a Netflix true crime documentary which told the harrowing story of murderer Chris Watts. This latest installment, however,...

The jury recommended a death sentence for Scott Peterson because they weren't moved by the defense's argument of lingering doubt. Scott Peterson's appeals have had mixed success, leading to a resentencing and his current incarceration in a California state prison.

The experience of watching Netflix‘s American Murder: Laci Peterson often feels intensely familiar.
Part of that, of course, is because the three-part docuseries from director Skye Borgman covers a very well-known true crime case. Laci Peterson was first reported missing on December 24, 2002 by her father and step-father. Eight months pregnant with her and her husband Scott Peterson’s first child, Laci was last seen the day before at a salon owned by her sister. Her body would eventually be discovered in a marshy section of a Bay Area park on April 13, 2003.
The case of Peterson’s disappearance and murder made news for a host of reasons. Laci was young, vibrant, attractive, and living the apparent American dream with a successful husband and a child on the way. Perhaps the biggest reason the Laci Peterson case came to prominence, however, is just how transparently guilty her husband Scott was of her murder.

Netflix announced the full list of new shows and movies coming in August last month, but it didn't include the latest true crime documentary series that should be one of the most-watched shows of the month.
American Murder: Laci Peterson premieres on Netflix on Aug. 14, 2024. Skye Borgman directed the three-episode documentary series about the murder of Laci Peterson by her husband, Scott Peterson, in 2002.
According to reports, Laci was reported missing around Christmas 2002, and at the time, her disappearance was treated as a missing persons investigation. As the investigation continued and more was brought to light, the case grew in popularity and quickly became an international news story. As more time went on and more information about Laci's life, her pregnancy, and her husband, Scott became the lead suspect in the case.

Netflix is going to dive deep into the death of Boston police officer John O’Keefe in a new three-part docuseries.
The Canton, Massachusetts, police officer was found unresponsive in the snow on January 29, 2022, and was pronounced dead at the hospital. O’Keefe’s then-girlfriend, Karen Read, became the suspect and was charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter while operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.
Read pleaded not guilty to all charges, with her legal team arguing that she was framed as part of a conspiracy by civilians and law enforcement to protect the real killers.
The murder trial was declared a mistrial on July 1, 2024, after the jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict. Norfolk County Prosecutors have announced that they intend to retry the case, while the Defense has filed to dismiss two of the charges.

2023 was a decent year as far as Netflix's original feature films go. From Bradley Cooper’s somewhat controversial Leonard Bernstein biopic, Maestro, Sam Esmail’s creepy apocalyptic nightmare, Leave the World Behind, or David Fincher’s return to the thriller with The Killer, there were some highly respectable contributions made by the streaming giant.
While improvements are still to be made if Netflix has any aspirations of replicating 2018 and 2019’s levels of output, which produced the likes of The Irishman, Roma, The King, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, and Klaus, the streaming platform will, no doubt, be seeking to ramp up their collection of high-quality original movies in its portfolio, especially with the theatrical release schedule looking rather sparse for the year ahead. With that in mind, let’s take a look at what’s in store for original releases in February 2024…

True crime shows have made Netflix a streaming giant with popular titles like Making a Murderer and Tiger King. Netflix offers a variety of true crime shows, featuring controversial cult leaders, family murders, and cold case investigations. The platform provides a unique perspective by allowing subjects like Amanda Knox to tell their own stories, and explores the impact of social media on crime cases.

Netflix sure owes a lot to horrific crimes being committed. The streaming service has had massive hits with such true crime documentaries as the truly harrowing "American Murder: The Family Next Door," "The Staircase," and the original Netflix crime doc phenomenon "Making a Murderer." The list of Netflix true crime documentaries is seemingly endless, and it's only growing year after year as our obsession with real-life acts of shocking barbarity shows no signs of abating.
Earlier this year the cinematic true crime series "Missing: Dead or Alive?" found its way into the Netflix Top 10. But that wasn't the first true crime hit for Netflix this year. That honor belongs to "Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal." Across three episodes, the series laid out the events surrounding the downfall of prominent South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh, who in 2023 was convicted of murdering his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul. Nature documentaries, true crime, even controversial stories of child-sexual abuse — they all need music, and this television season offered composers of varied backgrounds supplying outstanding scores.
“Really, you’re writing a concerto for dialogue,” says Michael Abels (“Get Out”), whose firstever doc assignment was the HBO series “Allen v. Farrow,” which outlined the case against Woody Allen, whose adopted daughter Dylan Farrow has accused the director of abusing her at age 7.
Most of the music in “Allen v. Farrow” supports the “reporting” segments. “Music helps us hear that part of the story, giving it momentum and direction,” says Abels, who enlisted a 40-member string ensemble to record and perform from Budapest.
The occasional clarinet solo, and ’30s- and ’40s-style big-band numbers, reminded viewers of Allen’s own musical tastes and Manhattan jazz-club performances.
The most sensitive material, however, went unscored. “When you see a little girl talking about what happened,...

This story about “Night Stalker” first appeared in the Race Begins issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
Making a documentary about sadistic serial killer Richard Ramirez, also known as the Night Stalker, was no easy feat for filmmaker Tiller Russell. The director/producer knew he would have to respect the victims’ trauma while showcasing Ramirez’s crimes, which were extremely violent in nature. By anchoring the story in the perspective of Gil Carrillo, one of the detectives who helped solve the case, he was able to carefully craft the Netflix docuseries, “Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer,” set to the tone of Hollywood noir.
“Had I not met Gil or Frank, I would’ve never done the story,” Russell said. “It was their experience of it that anchored me to it. Frank and Gil were this odd couple of detectives who had this journey which you can tell...

BAFTA pulled the curtain back on nominations for its TV and TV Craft Awards on Wednesday ahead of ceremonies that take place on June 6 and May 24 respectively. As always with award nominations, the list of those recognized had tongues wagging. Let’s walk through some of the biggest themes.

There were some eyebrow-raising absentees among the nominations this year. Netflix’s The Crown scored a decent haul of 10 nominations, but none of them were for Olivia Colman, Gillian Anderson, and Emma Corrin, who played Queen Elizabeth II, Margaret Thatcher, and Princess Diana respectively. The snubs were all the more notable given that all three were Golden Globe-nominated, while Anderson and Corrin were victorious at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association prizes. Other surprises included the absence of David Tennant for his role as serial killer Dennis Nilsen in ITV series Des, while critics also felt that series including ITV...

The numbers told an exciting story: For the first time ever, five major tentpole feature films directed by women were set to be released in a single calendar year: Cate Shortland’s “Black Widow,” Chloé Zhao’s “Eternals,” “Cathy Yan’s “Birds of Prey,” Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman 1984,” and Niki Caro’s “Mulan.” The year 2020 was going to show real progress and provide a sign of different things to come, aided by a push for visibility that had so far alluded even the industry’s most well-known female filmmakers. The five films on the schedule — four of which were tied to the biggest active franchises of the moment — were only part of a bigger picture.

Aunty Donna’s Big Ol’ House of Fun, Stateless, Love on The Spectrum and The New Legends of Monkey proved the most popular Australian titles on Netflix this year, both locally and globally.
Aunty Donna’s sketch comedy was particularly notable for spending almost two weeks in the Australian top ten while also trending in the US following its release in November.
However, it was the story of an American in the French capital that was crowned the most popular comedy series for the year, with Emily in Paris fulfilling the travel void for Australians in lockdown.
Other patterns to come out of the viewing data, taken from January until the end of November, include a rise in the popularity of Korean content in Australia, with shows such as Kingdom S2, The King: Eternal Monarch, and it’s Okay to Not Be Okay contributing to a doubling of viewing hours...

It’s only fitting that in 2020 — the year of the coronavirus — Netflix’s top titles include stand-up comedies, “sad movies” and “home baking shows.”
The streaming giant released year-end viewing trends on Thursday that also showed that October was the biggest month for comedy consumption, with audiences seeking to quell pre-election anxiety. “Hubie Halloween,” “The Wrong Missy,” “Space Force,” “Holidate” and “Kevin Hart: Zero Fucks Given” were the most popular comedy titles of the year.
In the three weeks following George Floyd’s death at the hands of Minneapolis police, viewing soared for titles that reflected the Black experience: “13th” saw the most growth, with viewing up more than 5,000%. “LA 92,” “Dear White People,” “Time: The Kalief Browder Story” and “American Son” views also skyrocketed.
Netflix users also gravitated toward twice as much romance in 2020 as the year prior, with films “The Kissing Booth 2,” “Princess Switch: Switched Again” and...

Netflix has revealed some color about its subscribers’ viewing habits during 2020.
The streamer saw foreign-language dramas such as Spain’s The Platform and Germany’s Barbarians boom, romance titles doubled in popularity and action titles such as Extraction and Cobra Kai flexed their muscles over the last twelves.
Some of the most interesting data provided by Netflix as part of its What We Watched 2020 report was around the pandemic and civil unrest over the summer. In March, as Covid-19 was starting to ravage the world outside of China, viewers were searching for home baking shows with almost a 50% rise from the previous month – a boon for the likes of Nailed It! and The Great British Bake Off.
The following month, searches for sad movies spiked nearly 30%, while subscribers were also calling out for stand-up shows between March and April. October was our biggest month for comedy viewing generally. Hubie Halloween,...

US viewers consumed 50% more foreign-language content in 2020, with The Platform from Spain, Barbarians from Germany and Rogue City from France the most popular choices.
While the streaming service provided no hard data on viewership of individual films and shows in its What We Watched 2020 briefing released on Thursday (December 10), the information at least offered guidance on trends.

Let the best-of-the-year lists commence. While guilds and critics groups will soon be delivering their opinions, one of the few of genuine interest each year comes from a single person: the wonderfully eccentric director John Waters, whose eclectic tastes always includes a mix of the unexpected and underseen.
Topping his list this year is Tyler Cornack’s spring release Butt Boy, which features a strange tale of missing persons potentially disappearing up someone’s rectum, followed by the recommended psychological body horror film Swallow. Also among the list are the latest films from Pedro Almodóvar, Craig Zobel, Quentin Dupieux and, as a 10th place tie leading to 11 selections, new courtroom dramas by Steve McQueen and Aaron Sorkin.
Check out the list below via Baltimore Fishbowl, which will appear in the next issue of Artforum. We’ve also included links to our reviews.

If you were a Netflix subscriber during the spookiest month of the year, you’re likely to have found a nice selection of intriguing content to sort through. And although you may have moved on to November’s new additions, it might be worth looking back over October’s biggest titles to see if you contributed to the rankings by watching some of your favorite movies and shows of the month.
Surprising almost no one, the creepy Netflix Original series The Haunting of Hill House managed to bring in the lion’s share of the platform’s viewership for October. That being said, it also snagged the top spot on the overall streaming charts, scoring an impressive 15.8% of the total viewership across the most popular services.
Meanwhile, the beloved comedy show Schitt’s Creek dropped its sixth and final season on Netflix early last month and came in a close second in viewership.

For Netflix subscribers, this “Schitt” don’t stink. A week after “Schitt’s Creek” dominated the Emmy Awards, taking home the outstanding comedy prize and eight other awards, more viewers flocked to check the Canadian comedy out, according to Nielsen data.
As a result, “Schitt’s Creek” shot to No. 1 on Nielsen’s list of top 10 most-streamed shows in the U.S. for the week of Sept. 28. The show immediately made it to the previous week’s chart, for the week of Sept. 21, but the dam burst the following week.
That’s likely due to the surprise drop of “Schitt’s Creek’s” sixth and final season on Oct. 3. Originally slated for Oct. 7, the upload came early and caused a frenzy among fans. Viewers’ Season 6 binge will likely spill into the next chart as well.
Viewers watched “Schitt’s Creek” for a total of 968 million total minutes between Sept. 28 and Oct. 4, placing it tops.

Netflix, in its third quarter earnings report Tuesday, touted “The Old Guard” as its most popular title of the summer quarter.
According to the streamer, 78 million subscriber households tuned in to watch the action thriller, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and starring Charlize Theron, in its first four weeks on the platform.
Other Netflix original features that proved popular included Jamie Foxx starrer “Project Power,” which drew 75 million households in the same time frame, and “The Kissing Booth 2,” drawing 66 million households in its first 28 days.
The service predicts that “Enola Holmes,” starring Millie Bobby Brown and Henry Cavill, will attract 76 million households in its first four weeks.
These metrics, of course, are self-reported, and based on the number of member accounts that have watched a given show or movie for a minimum of just two minutes, an in-house calculation Netflix asserts is a better reflection of popularity than average time spent viewing,...

The range of pricing in VOD play has never been so clear. Two films at the extreme ranges of budget and premium stand out among new releases. At $3.99, which represents rock-bottom for a new film, Dinesh D’Souza’s latest right-wing polemic “Trump Card” is #1 at both Apple TV and Google Play, charts that rank by transaction volume.
At the same time, Disney’s “Mulan” is now available on platforms beyond Disney+ for $29.99, and is #1 at the revenue-based FandangoNow. “Ava” also continues its successful showings, with first place at Spectrum.
“Trump Card” is pitched as an expose of “socialism, corruption, and the deep state,” and clearly aimed at Election Day interest. In his past films (which received theatrical release), D’Souza preferred to specifically demonize Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton. This time, the target is far broader than the tougher-to-hate Joe Biden. It placed #2 at FandangoNow, where its low price hurts its ranking.

Since being released last Friday, Netflix’s The Haunting of Bly Manor has been putting the chills to subscribers, with some apparently even being too scared to sleep. All this buzz means that Bly Manor has now overtaken Adam Sandler’s Hubie Halloween to become the most popular title on the streaming platform, with other entries in today’s Top 10 including some shows and movies that have had strong staying power in recent weeks.
Hubie Halloween was an instant hit on Netflix, again demonstrating that Sandler can do little wrong when it comes to drawing in audiences. To nobody's surprise, Adam Sandler's latest Netflix comedy Hubie Halloween topped the streaming giant's top trending lists upon the day of its debut. Back in 2014, Sandler first struck a deal with Netflix to produce six movies for the streamer under the actor's studio Happy Madison productions, of which Hubie Halloween is the final installment. The arrangement proved so profitable for Netflix that earlier this year the company extended the contract to include four additional movies.
Hubie Halloween tells the story of frequently mocked delicatessen owner Hubie, played by Adam Sandler, who patrols the streets every Halloween night to ensure proper etiquette is observed. On the latest Halloween night, real monsters attack the town, and it is up to Hubie to convince everyone else that the threat is real so they can all band together to save the day.

The latest buzzy Netflix documentary tells the story of Chris Watts who murdered his pregnant wife Shanann and their two daughters Celeste and Bella. In this doc we hear the 911 call from Shanann’s friend Nickole Atkinson the morning of her death and the police footage of the moments they arrived at the house to find a frantic Nickole and later a very cagey Chris Watts. We see the last text messages Shanann sent and the last moments her daughters were alive. And we see Chris Watts lying about Shanann and their kids’ disappearance mere hours after he had killed them all. It is tough.

With “Mulan” arriving on more platforms October 6 and non-premium VOD titles like “The Witches” and Amazon’s “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” later this month, the home-viewing market was on pause with no new premium titles this weekend. That didn’t stop Jessica Chastain’s “Ava,” however: It had the best showing for a non-premium title in the six months we’ve covered weekly VOD performance.
The $6.99 female-assassin action film, which debuted September 25, placed #1 at the three transactional sites and second at FandangoNow, which lists by revenue. Other recent titles like “The Outpost,” “The Tax Collector,” and “The Silencing” have thrived for multiple weeks, but none topped the charts for two weeks.
Beating out “Ava” at FandangoNow, thanks to its $19.99 price point, is “Antebellum.” In its third week, it’s also #2 at Spectrum. It fell off Apple TV and Google Play, even with less competition among premium titles.

Gripping military dramas based on true events have proven to be a very popular subgenre in Hollywood throughout the 21st Century, although the results have been decidedly mixed. The Hurt Locker found plenty of awards season glory while Zero Dark Thirty, Lone Survivor and Black Hawk Down scored solid box office business and enthusiastic reviews, but lying at the other end of the spectrum are the painfully mediocre likes of Michael Bay’s 13 Hours and Chris Hemsworth vehicle 12 Strong.

Chris and Shanann Watts are at the center of Netflix's American Murder: The Family Next Door. The documentary follows the 2018 killing of Shanann, her two daughters, and her unborn child, all at the hands of her husband, Chris. It was August 2018 when Shanann's friend reported the woman missing, prompting local Colorado police to open an investigation. What followed was Chris wildly changing his story as the police probed deeper into Shanann's disappearance, along with that of her two daughters.
At one point, Chris told police he and Shanann had an "emotional" discussion around 5 a.m. the day she disappeared. He said that the next morning when security cameras caught him backing his truck up to the garage, he was simply loading tools to go to work while his family was asleep. He later said, according to The Coloradoan, that he strangled his wife in a fit of rage and smothered his daughters.

Netflix has provided an exceptionally strong collection of content for subscribers to enjoy in September. As a matter of fact, the inclusion of dozens of fantastic original shows and films alongside tons of memorable classics has made it it one of the platform’s best months ever. But today marks the end of a great run for the streaming giant before October’s big releases start up tomorrow, and while most of the best stuff has already landed earlier in the month, this final gift of new additions still has something left to offer.
Today’s most notable release is the film adaptation of the 1968 Broadway play The Boys in the Band. This LGBT-focused drama is based on the 2018 revival of the play and stars big names like Jim Parsons and Zachary Quinto in a story that follows a group of gay men in New York who get together to celebrate one of their birthdays.

On Aug. 13, 2018, Chris Watts murdered his pregnant wife Shanann and his two daughters, four-year-old Bella and three-year-old Celeste. Yet, it would take three months for him to tell authorities the true story of what transpired that night.
“American Murder: The Family Next Door” is Netflix’s newest true-crime doc that tells the story of the Watts family murders through body-cam footage, home videos, text messages, social media posts and interrogation room footage.

Shanann Watts appeared to be fighting for her marriage up until she was murdered by her husband Chris Watts. Just a couple of weeks after the first trailer for American Murder: The Family Next Door was released, Netflix has a new sneak peek that sheds more light on a true crime that captivated the nation. "I miss and love you so much," she shared in a text after learning she was expecting their third child together. "I am still in shock we are having a little boy! I'm so excited and happy! Thank you for letting me hold you this morning, it felt good! Your...

On August 15, 2018, Chris Watts confessed to killing his pregnant wife Shan’ann, but said he did it in a fit of rage after she strangled their children in response to his request for separation. A few days later, he admitted the lie and confessed that he also killed their two young daughters. In between, all hell broke loose. The Colorado drama made national headlines, and for a few days Shan’ann became the focal point for a particular set of news-obsessed freaks who thought nothing of tearing apart a dead woman’s reputation because a) social media made it easy and b) her husband did the same thing.

Netflix's newest true-crime documentary, American Murder: The Family Next Door, takes an in-depth look at the Chris Watts case and the chilling moments that led up to him murdering his entire family. In 2018, Chris's wife Shannan Watts and their two daughters - 4-year-old Bella and 3-year-old Celeste - went missing in Frederick, Co. Told entirely through archival footage, the documentary - which will premiere on Sept. 30 - takes a close look at the subsequent investigation with Chris as the primary suspect.
Once Shannan and the children had been missing for several days, Watts was taken in for questioning by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (Cbi). During the examination, Chris was given a polygraph test - or lie detector test - to help determine his level of involvement in the case. Chris denied any claims that he had anything to do with Shannan's death or the deaths of their children,...

The theatrical industry is still struggling to return to normal, and matters aren’t helped as the studios continue to pull major releases from the calendar and send them to next year. There might not be a lot of content available on the big screen, but luckily the streaming wars remain in full swing, and as the market leaders, Netflix are constantly updating their library to retain their position at the front of the pack.
