The Rachel Maddow Show

Fox News Continued To See Audience Growth In May While MSNBC And CNN Posted Double-Digit Declines Vs. 2024
Image
Fox News continued to show robust ratings growth for the month of May, again dominating its cable news rivals MSNBC and CNN, which have seen year-over-year declines.

The past month saw the debut of MSNBC’s new nighttime lineup, with The Weeknight taking the 7 p.m. Et slot, Rachel Maddow returning to one night a week at 9 p.m. Et and Jen Psaki filling that time period Tuesday to Thursday.

But the new shows are not reversing the trendlines vs. 2024. While MSNBC has recovered some audience since a post-election fall off, the network, like CNN, has seen double-digit drops from a year ago. The caveat is that last year was a presidential election year, when networks typically see an increase in viewership.

In primetime, Fox News averaged 2.46 million viewers, up 23%, while MSNBC posted 877,000, down 24%, and CNN averaged 426,000, down 18%. In the 25-54 demo, Fox News averaged 262,000, up 32%, compared to CNN...

MSNBC Ratings Without Rachel Maddow: How’s the Network Doing?
Image
The cable news ratings are in for last Friday (May 9), including Jen Psaki‘s final rating for her first week in the 9 pm slot with her new show, The Briefing, which replaced The Rachel Maddow Show. According to AdWeek, citing Nielsen numbers, Psaki brought in 1.074 million total viewers for MSNBC at 9 pm on Friday, with 66,000 in the key 25-54 demo. This was down slightly from her Thursday (May 8) numbers, which stood at 1.105 million total viewers and 98,000 in the key demo. Psaki, who previously served as former President Joe Biden’s White House press secretary, took over the Tuesday to Friday 9 pm slot from Rachel Maddow, had been hosting five nights a week for the first 100 days of President Donald Trump’s second term in the White House. Maddow has now scaled back to Monday nights only. Elsewhere on MSNBC, Chris Hayes brought in 932,000 total viewers on Friday at 8 pm, with 87,000 in the key demo.

MSNBC Host Rachel Maddow Admits Successor Jen Psaki Is ‘Better’ Than Her
Image
MSNBC has officially transitioned its 9 p.m. Et primetime slot from veteran anchor Rachel Maddow to former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, marking a significant shift in the network’s evening lineup. This change is part of a broader programming overhaul under new MSNBC President Rebecca Kutler, aiming to adapt to the evolving media landscape and audience preferences.

After assuming the role, Kutler fired anchor Joy Reid as one of her first acts. Maddow blasted the decision live on the air.

Maddow, a staple at MSNBC for nearly two decades, concluded her special 100-day nightly hosting stint on May 5, which coincided with the first 100 days of Donald Trump’s new presidential term. She now returns to her previous schedule, hosting The Rachel Maddow Show exclusively on Monday nights. Maddow expressed confidence in Psaki, stating that the primetime slot would be “better” with Psaki’s fresh perspective.

Maddow herself was...

Rachel Maddow Gets Candid About Jen Psaki Taking Over Her MSNBC Slot
Image
Rachel Maddow is opening up about stepping away from MSNBC and handing her prime time slot to Jen Psaki. Maddow previously announced she would return to hosting The Rachel Maddow Show for five nights a week for Donald Trump’s first 100 days back in office. As of Monday night (May 5), she is back to hosting Mondays only, as former Joe Biden spokesperson Psaki took over the 9 pm Et slot starting last night (May 6). Speaking to People following the end of her 100-day stint, Maddow admitted she never envisioned returning to nightly shows, which she scaled back in 2022 as she focused on other projects. “I had definitely stepped back and considered that to be permanent,” she told the outlet, admitting her return to five nights a week was “not on my bingo card in terms of things that I was considering.” However, after MSNBC called her and asked if she’d...

Cory Booker: ‘People Want to Know You Give a Shit’
Image
Cory Booker had been railing against Donald Trump’s agenda from the floor of the Senate for three hours when his feet started to go numb. On the lectern he had his cellphone out (against Senate rules), with his family group chat pulled up. Every now and then it pinged with a message of encouragement, or a photo of an absurdly shredded bald dude — the motivational speaker, ultramarathoner, and former Navy Seal David Goggins — instructing him to “Stay Hard.”

Booker’s family read Goggins’ book together back in 2021, his cousin Pam tells me.

Rachel Maddow Wraps Up 100-Day Nightly MSNBC Run With One Last Laugh at Trump
Image
Rachel Maddow marked the end of her 100-day run on MSNBC by laughing at President Donald Trump and his recent statements about how parents should limit their children to “three dolls” and “five pencils.” The popular news anchor previously announced she would return to hosting The Rachel Maddow Show for five nights a week for Trump’s first 100 days back in office. As of Monday night (May 5), she is back to hosting Mondays only, as former Joe Biden spokesperson Jen Psaki takes over the 9 pm Et slot starting tonight (May 6). As Maddow handed off her show to Lawrence O’Donnell, the pair couldn’t help but crack up over Trump’s recent comments about his tariffs on China and how it might mean parents have to cut back on spending this coming Christmas. “I’m just saying [children] don’t need to have 30 dolls. They can have three. They don’t need to have 250 pencils.

Image
President Donald Trump‘s controversial trade tariffs have positively affected cable news, with MSNBC, in particular, seeing a significant ratings boost for the week of March 31. According to Nielsen ratings, per AdWeek, MSNBC posted its most-watched week since Election Week last year. This saw the network with double-digit gains in both total viewers and the coveted Adults 25-54 demographic during total day. MSNBC’s primetime lineup, which includes programs like The Rachel Maddow Show and The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell, averaged 1.237 million total viewers (up 6% on the week prior) and 113,000 viewers in the key demo (up 1%). The increases were even higher during total day, with the network averaging 701,000 total viewers (up 12%) and 69,000 viewers in the key demo (up 17%). ‘Morning Joe’ Welcomes Politico’s Eugene Daniels as MSNBC’s Senior Washington Correspondent
Image
MSNBC has officially found its new Senior Washington Correspondent in Eugene Daniels, a Politico alum who has appeared on the network multiple times. Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough welcomed the latest addition on “Morning Joe” on Monday.

“Thank you. You guys put me on TV all the time, so now they just stuck me there. So this is all your fault,” Daniels said of his full-time gig, to which Brzezinski responded, “We’ll take it.”

Daniels isn’t joking about being on TV often. In the past year alone, he appeared on MSNBC more than 100 times and has guest-hosted programs for the network, including “The Weekend.” He first joined the channel in 2021 and previously worked as a Senior Political Analyst.

As well as serving as MSNBC’s Washington correspondent, Daniels will also be a co-host of “The Weekend” on Saturdays and Sundays from 7 to 10 a.m. Et. He will host...

Rachel Maddow Speaks Out About Joy Reid’s MSNBC Axing
Image
Rachel Maddow has spoken out against MSNBC‘s decision to axe Joy Reid, letting her viewers know she thinks the network has made “a bad mistake.” On Monday’s (February 24) edition of The Rachel Maddow Show, the host addressed Reid’s departure, just hours after Reid fronted her final episode of The ReidOut earlier that day. At the top of her show, Maddow said Reid’s exit was “very, very, very hard to take.” “There is no colleague for whom I have had more affection and more respect than Joy Reid,” she continued. “I love everything about her. I have learned so much from her. I have so much more to learn from her. I do not want to lose her as a colleague here at MSNBC.” Maddow added, “And, personally, I think it is a bad mistake to let her walk out the door. It is not my call,...

Rachel Maddow Sounds Off on Major MSNBC Line-Up Changes and Exit of Joy Reid: ‘I Think It Is a Bad Mistake to Let Her Walk Out the Door’
Image
Longtime MSNBC host Rachel Maddow sounded off during a Monday night broadcast of “The Rachel Maddow Show” on the network’s major line-up changes, which saw the exit of anchor Joy Reid.

“Joy Reid’s show, ‘The ReidOut,’ ended tonight. And Joy is not taking a different job in the network. She is leaving the network altogether and that is very, very, very hard to take,” Maddow said. “I am 51 years old. I have been gainfully employed since I was 12. I have had so many different types of jobs you wouldn’t believe me if I told you. But in all the jobs that I have had, in all of the years I have been alive, there is no colleague for whom I’ve had more affection and more respect than Joy Reid. I love everything about her. Jen Psaki Moves to Primetime, Ali Velshi Expands Airtime in MSNBC Lineup Overhaul
Image
MSNBC unveiled its new lineup on Monday, with former Biden Press Secretary Jen Psaki seeing her show expand to several nights during the week and outgoing anchor Joy Reid being replaced by a new program.

The changes are being spearheaded by recently-appointed MSNBC President Rebecca Kutler, who is betting on names that are well-liked in Democratic and left-leaning circles to help the cable channel continue its rebound from a post-election viewer exodus.

The big change is that Psaki’s show, “Inside with Jen Psaki,” will now air Tuesday-Friday at 9 p.m. Et. Veteran host Rachel Maddow will return following President Trump’s first 100 days in office to host the 9 p.m. hour on Mondays.

Psaki is replacing Alex Wagner, who has anchored Tuesday-Friday at 9 p.m. since 2022; Wagner will be staying with MSNBC as a senior political analyst.

And MSNBC confirmed it is replacing “The ReidOut” with a new show...

Rachel Maddow Will Return To Five-Night-a-Week Schedule For Trump Administration’s First 100 Days; Alex Wagner To Go On Special Assignment
Image
Rachel Maddow will return to a five-night-a-week schedule for the first 100 days of Donald Trump’s administration, bolstering the MSNBC lineup at a crucial period.

Maddow has hosted the network’s top-rated show on one night each week, Mondays, since 2022. Alex Wagner anchors the 9 p.m. Et hour Tuesdays through Fridays.

During the 100 days, Wagner will travel the country for a series of reports called Trumpland: The First 100 Days, focused on the impacts of the returning president’s policies. In the final 100 days before the election, Wagner reported from the Democratic National Convention and the presidential debates and other political events.

As the top ratings getter, Maddow’s return to a weeknight schedule may give the network a needed boost following a viewership tune-out after Election Day, a drop that also has beset CNN. Executives hope that audiences will turn once the new administration gets up and running. Maddow and...

Where Networks Stand In News Ratings In 2024: Fox Gets Big Bounce, While MSNBC and CNN Look To Come Back From Post-Election Tune Out
Image
The past year, 2024, was supposed to be a big audience uplift for major cable news networks: A presidential election, with proven ratings getter Donald Trump as one of the major players.

While Fox News, MSNBC and CNN did see a rise in their ratings, the latter two networks saw a big post-election drop off as politics weary viewers tuned out after Trump’s victory and Vice President Kamala Harris’ loss.

The question for 2025 is whether those regular viewers come back after a bit of a break from burnout, as some executives expect, or if their habits turn to other sources, like ideologically friendly podcasts or digital streaming.

What’s more, the coming year will likely see major changes at MSNBC and CNN, as the former prepares to separate itself from the Comcast mothership, and the latter undergoes an overhaul to integrate CNN.com and digital video.

Fox News topped primetime, averaging 2.38 million viewers,...

The eight-episode Season 2 of “Rachel Maddow Presents: Ultra” is set to debut June 10, with new installments to be released weekly on Mondays. In the second season of “Ultra,” Maddow “uncovers a web of troubling forces at work on the American ultra right in the post-war 1950s,” telling the “complex and little-known history of the all-out international manhunt for a fascist American traitor who infiltrated the Nazi war crimes trials and left a lasting mark on American politics for decades to come,” per MSNBC. Fox News Tops May Ratings As Cable Networks See Audience Year-Over-Year Growth During Month Dominated By Trump Trial Coverage
Image
Fox News saw double digit ratings growth during the month of May, as all cable networks some some year-over-year total viewership uptick with Donald Trump’s hush money trial dominating the coverage.

In primetime, Fox News averaged 2 million viewers, up 41% from the same month a year earlier. MSNBC averaged 1.16 million, about the same as last year, and CNN averaged 518,000, up 5%.

It was a mixed picture in the 25-54 demo. Fox News averaged 199,000, up 47% from a year earlier, compared to 110,000 for MSNBC, down 8% and CNN with 96,000, down 15%.

Another potential factor in Fox News’ ratings gains: In May 2023, Fox News saw a primetime ratings dip after the network parted ways with its top personality, Tucker Carlson, and initially filled the slot with guest hosts. The network has seen some audience recovery since Jesse Watters filled the slot permanently. In his last full month on the air, Carlson averaged 3.25 million viewers in March,...

Fox News Tops April Ratings; CNN And MSNBC See Some Boost From Trump Trial, But It’s Hardly A Blockbuster
Image
Fox News continued its dominance in the April ratings, while network coverage of Donald Trump’s hush money trial has failed to produce blockbuster viewership.

In fact, all the major cable news networks saw a drop off in the key 25-54 demo versus a year ago.

Working against the networks is the fact that the television coverage of the Trump trial is prohibited in the courtroom, leaving it to correspondents to check in with regular reports along with an assortment of legal analysts. CNN and MSNBC have added scrolls on the side of their screens with real time text updates from the courthouse.

In primetime, Fox News topped with an average of 1.98 million viewers, down 5% versus 2023, compared to MSNBC with 1.25 million, down 5%, and CNN with 624,000, up 6%. In the 25-54 demo, Fox News averaged 219,000, down 9%, compared to MSNBC with 114,000, down 3%, and CNN with 113,000, down 16%.

Fox News Tops Q1 And March Ratings, MSNBC And CNN Show Biggest Growth Vs. 2023
Image
Fox News topped its rivals in the March and first-quarter 2024 ratings by a wide margin, but MSNBC and CNN showed the biggest growth versus the same period a year ago.

The past month saw major events like Super Tuesday and President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address. Although the numbers aren’t giving the networks the blockbuster audiences of the 2020 cycle, the networks have for now staved off the large double-digit declines of recent years.

In primetime in March, Fox News averaged 2.14 million viewers, up 2% from the same period a year ago. MSNBC posted 1.31 million, up 15%, and CNN averaged 601,000, up 27%. In the 25-54 demo, Fox News averaged 246,000, up less than 1% over 2023, while MSNBC averaged 133,000, up 24%, and CNN was at 124,000, up 24%.

In total day in March, Fox News topped with 1.31 million, down less than 1%, while MSNBC posted 830,000, up 18%, and CNN averaged 461,000, up 8%. In the 25-54 demo, Fox News led...

NBC News Ousts Contributor Ronna McDaniel After Anchors Revolt
Image
The NBC News career of Ronna McDaniel, the former head of the Republican National Committee, has been ended before it had ever truly begun.

NBC News said Tuesday that it would cut ties with McDaniel after a phalanx of popular anchors rebelled against a decision to make her a political contributor who would offer commentary through the 2024 presidential election. NBC News executives had hoped to gain new insight to the thinking of the modern Republican party, but NBC News journalists could not stomach the prospect of putting McDaniel on air after she had helped former President Donald Trump in his efforts to undermine the integrity of the 2020 election, which was won by current officeholder Joe Biden.

“There is no doubt that the last several days have been difficult for the News Group. After listening to the legitimate concerns of many of you, I have decided that Ronna McDaniel will not be an NBC News contributor,...

‘SNL’s Weekend Update Takes On 30 Rock Bed Bug Infestation, Katie Britt, Lindsey Graham & More

Colin Jost and Michael Che poked fun at politics and pop culture on Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update” segment.

“For more on this story, everybody, look under your seat,” Jost joked.

Che went on to poke fun at Mike Tyson, saying that the boxer would have difficulty pronouncing Netflix, the place where his fight with Jake Paul will stream later this year.

Jost also didn’t pass on the opportunity to mock Republican Katie Britt following her strange State of the Union rebuttal.

“Those were all scenes from the one-woman show A Britt Much,” Jost joked. “It’s the play critics are calling,...

Fox News again topped the February ratings, while MSNBC saw double digit growth in total day and primetime.

The networks have had a mixed ratings picture so far during the election year, a time that has typically seen a large viewer uptick. But the dominance of Donald Trump and Joe Biden in the race for their parties’ nominations has likely had an impact, more than anything, on viewer interest, with much less suspense on the outcome.

That said, MSNBC did show gains. In primetime, the network averaged 1.35 million viewers, up 15% from the same period a year earlier. Fox News was still well ahead of its rivals with an average of 2.07 million, but that was down 9%. CNN posted 573,000, down 2%.

In the 25-54 demo, Fox News averaged 231,000, down 23%, while MSNBC posted 122,000, up 3%, and CNN was at 116,000, down 5%.

In total day, Fox News averaged 1.34 million, down 7%, while MSNBC was at 852,000, up 20%, and CNN...

Jon Stewart, Rachel Maddow Test Monday Media Model to Boost Talk TV
Image
Can Mondays do for the TV business what Thursdays and Sundays once did? Some of the medium’s best-known personalities are trying to figure this question out.

When Jon Stewart re-emerges Monday night as a one-night-a-week host of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” he will join MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow and Jen Psaki in making bespoke Monday appearances for their network, part of what has become a low-key scheduling experiment that actually has high stakes: In a medium best known for offering viewers the same hosts in the same time slots five nights a week, can TV networks that thrive on news-and-talk programs generate new attention and advertising dollars by doling them out less frequently ?

“Monday is really appealing,” says Stephanie Morales, vice president of media intelligence at Magna, the Interpublic Group media-research firm. It tends to be the second-most-watched day of the week on linear TV, behind Sundays,...

Fox News Tops January Ratings, Sees Slight Primetime Viewership Bump Along With MSNBC As 2024 Election Season Gets Underway
Image
Fox News and MSNBC saw slight viewership increases in primetime in the month of January as the 2024 primary season got underway, although the whole contest may be short-lived given Donald Trump’s sweep of Iowa and New Hampshire and Joe Biden’s nominal opposition.

Fox News topped the month with an average of 1.98 million viewers in seven-night primetime, a 2% increase from the same month a year ago, while MSNBC averaged 1.09 million, up 4%, and CNN posted 605,000, down 4%.

In the 25-54 demo, Fox News averaged 219,000, down 8%, compared to CNN with 124,000, down 14%, and MSNBC with 106,000, off by 3%.

In total day, Fox News averaged 1.25 million, down 7%, compared to MSNBC with 761,000, up 8%, and CNN with 463,000, down 12%. In the total-day demo, Fox News averaged 149,000, down 14%, compared to CNN with 86,000, down 20% and MSNBC with 77,000, down 1%.

Overall, cable news networks’ coverage of the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary was down versus 2020, perhaps because of an aura...

E. Jean Carroll, In First TV Interviews, Speaks About Facing Donald Trump At Trial: “He Was Like Nothing, Like An Emperor Without Clothes”
Image
Update: E. Jean Carroll appeared on MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show on Monday night, where she said that encountering former President Donald Trump in court was like being in the presence of “nothing.”

“He is like a walrus snorting, and like a rhino flopping his hands. He is not there. That is what is the surprising thing to me,” she said.

That said, she said that she was “terrified” over the experience, which she said was the first time that she had seen him in person since 1996. That is when she claimed that he sexually assaulted her. A jury last year found Trump liable, and last week another jury ordered Trump to pay $83.3 million in a defamation verdict.

Even though she said that she was frightened when she took the stand, with Trump watching her from his seat, “Amazingly I looked out and he was nothing. He was a phantom.

E. Jean Carroll on Defamation Win Against Trump: “He Was Nothing … No Power. He Was Zero”
Image
E. Jean Carroll says looking at Donald Trump during his defamation trial last week was “like looking at nothing” or “an emperor without clothes.”

The author and journalist who sued the former reality star and U.S. president after he claimed that she fabricated a sexual assault allegation against him to sell a book — an allegation a Manhattan federal jury found Trump liable for last year — spoke to CNN This Morning‘s Poppy Harlow and Phil Mattingly Monday.

With the duo, Carroll discussed being terrified in the days leading up to the trial and how she felt after while hearing the multimillion dollar judgement in her favor last Friday. “He was nothing,” she said while discussing seeing Trump in-person. “He was just — no power. He was zero.”

“He’s an emperor without clothes,” she added. “It’s like looking at nothing.”

Carroll, who sued Trump for sexually abusing her in...

On Friday, following a contentious trial in which the disgraced former president often acted with blatant contempt of court, Trump was order to pay Caroll $83.3 million in damages for defaming her. The judgement stemmed from comments Trump made in May, during the ill-advised CNN townhall in May, 2023, that ultimately got the network’s president Chris Licht fired.

E. Jean Carroll Sets First TV Interview After Trump Ordered to Pay Her $83M
Image
Rachel Maddow has landed a big scoop: E. Jean Carroll, who just won an $83.3 million judgment against former president Donald Trump for defamation, will join Maddow for her first TV interview since the trial ended.

Carroll will appear on Monday’s edition of MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show (9/8c), the network announced on Friday. Earlier on Friday, a Manhattan federal jury found that Trump should pay Carroll $83.3 million in damages for disparaging her and denying her allegations of rape. The total includes $18.3 million in compensatory damages and $65 million in punitive damages. Last year, a separate jury found that Trump...

Rachel Maddow Lands First Post-Trial Interview With E. Jean Carroll on MSNBC
Image
On Monday, the woman who just won $83 a million judgement against Donald Trump will appear on The Rachel Maddow Show.

MSNBC announced late today that Maddow will sit down with E. Jean Carroll for her first interview since a jury ordered former President Donald Trump to hand over $83 million in damages for defaming Carroll.

Carroll will be joined by her attorneys Roberta Kaplan and Shawn Crowley for the interview to discuss the case and a potential appeal from Trump.

While not a huge dent in self-declared billionaire’s wallet, today’s verdict is still, in the words of CNN’s Jake Tapper this afternoon, “quite a chunk of change.” The judgement will be appealed, as the former president indicated today, but overturning the decision could prove difficult for Team Trump.

Fox’s Neil Cavuto made a point of remarking that it was a “unanimous jury” verdict. He also noted that...

Rachel Maddow’s next project will take her to Russia — in a sense.

The feature boasts exclusive interviews with Lev Parnas, the Ukranian-born operative whose association with former President Donald Trump and one of his attorneys, Rudolph Giuliani, took him on a strange journey that ended in a stealth campaign to produce dirt on then-candidate Joe Biden and a role in Trump’s first impeachment.

Maddow and McKay will serve as executive producers on the political farce, which is directed by Billy Corben and produced by Alfred Spellman, The duo have more than 30 hours of interview footage with Parnas and exclusive access to his personal archive that includes hundreds of gigabytes of photos, videos, documents,...

Cable News Ratings 2023: Fox News Dominates, But MSNBC Is Only Major Network With Year-Over-Year Audience Growth
Image
Fox News dominated the ratings for 2023, but only MSNBC showed slight growth in audience compared to a year earlier.

Fox News, for an eighth year in a row, also was the top-rated cable network overall.

In seven-day primetime, Fox News averaged 1.85 million viewers, down 20% from a year earlier. MSNBC averaged 1.22 million, up 2%, and CNN posted 582,000, down 19%. In the adults 25-54 demo, Fox News averaged 212,000, down 38%, while CNN posted 125,000, down 27% and MSNBC had 124,000, down 6%.

In total day, Fox News averaged 1.22 million, down 18%, compared to MSNBC with 780,000, up 6%, and CNN with 479,000, down 15%. In the 25-54 demo, Fox News averaged 149,000, down 35%, compared to CNN with 94,000, down 23% and MSNBC with 87,000, up 5%.

The past year lacked a major election, ala the midterms in 2022 and the presidential election in 2020, that have proven to be audience boosts. Fox News’ figures also reflected its decision to drop its most watched personality, Tucker Carlson. Although his successor, Jesse Watters,...

MSNBC Faces ‘Morning Woe’ After Tech Problems Cause A.M. Glitch
Image
Technical issues sent MSNBC on a Tuesday-morning scramble.

The NBCUniversal-backed cable news outlet was forced to run more than ten minutes of promos and ads and a snippet of a repeat from Lawrence O’Donnell’s primetime show just after 6 a.m. as engineers and staffers grappled with an as-yet-unknown glitch that kept “Morning Joe” from coming on the air at its usual time. Finally, “Morning Joe” co-anchor Mika Brzezinski surfaced on air at about 6:11 a.m. to kick off the program and apologize for the delay.

“Thanks for bearing with us, everybody,” Brzezinski. Viewers had initially seen a shot of the U.S. Capitol at the top of the hour along with some of the strains of The Who’s seminal rock song “Baba O’Riley.”

MSNBC declined to comment. Jonathan Lemire, the anchor of the 5 a.m. program, “Way Too Early,” cited “technical difficulties” via a post on the social-media platform X.

How To Watch & What To Expect From Ron DeSantis-Gavin Newsom Debate On Fox News
Image
When Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and California Gov. Gavin Newsom debate this evening on Fox News, it might not have a direct impact on the 2024 presidential race, but that doesn’t mean it won’t have consequences for their futures and for the network.

DeSantis is no longer the definitive Trump alternative that he was when Fox News host Sean Hannity first broached the idea last summer, and Newsom is not even a candidate, despite facing perpetual questions about his presidential aspirations.

And while the right vs. left, East vs. West, Sunshine State vs. Golden State matchup is a bit of a gimmick, it is enough to draw media attention, with the negotiations over format and setting rivaling that even of a regular primary debate.

The 90-minute “great red state vs. blue state” debate, starting at 9 p.m. Et/6 p.m. Pt, will take place in Georgia and, after some back and forth,...

CNN Sets ‘King Charles’ Premiere Date
Image
CNN has set Nov. 29 as the premiere date for King Charles, the primetime limited series hosted by Gayle King and Charles Barkley.

The show will air at 10 p.m. Et on Wednesdays, although the second week will be an hour earlier because of the GOP debate on Dec. 6.

In a promo, King called the show “our unfiltered take on the biggest stories of the day.”

The show’s genesis was during the tenure of Chris Licht, the former CNN boss who was ousted in June. Licht had sought to shore up the network’s primetime lineup with star personalities, even if that meant once-a-week primetime shows. MSNBC already has done that, with The Rachel Maddow Show now appearing only on Mondays after Maddow signed a new contract that pulled back on her regular appearances.

King will continue in her role as co-host of CBS Mornings, as well as her SiriusXM show,...

Rachel Maddow Questions Value of Airing Hamas Kidnappings in Israel: ‘They Want It to Be Seen’ (Video)
Rachel Maddow in The Rachel Maddow Show (2008)
Graphic images and videos have overtaken media coverage of the Israel-Gaza conflict that re-erupted over the weekend with Hamas’ terrorist attack on Israeli civilians, and MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow questioned Monday just how to best navigate them. As the conflict in the Middle East continues, the role of mainstream and social media has become thornier.

“Since the attack on Israel started on Saturday morning, we have seen these murders and hostage takings of civilians and otherwise. We have seen them being filmed and put online for a strategic aim — to advance the purposes of the people who are doing the murdering and the hostage taking,” Maddow said, hosting “The Rachel Maddow Show.”

The journalist shared her dilemma of whether or not to air these clips and images, and expressed that they put “every social media company on Earth” and “everybody in the news business” in a difficult position.

Former Trump Aide Cassidy Hutchinson Denies Ever Dating Rep. Matt Gaetz: ‘I Have Much Higher Standards In Men’
Image
Former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson wants everyone to know: she never dated Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida).

Hutchinson’s new book, Enough, was released on Tuesday. In it, she details her experiences working for the White House during Trump’s administration, including inappropriate moments with Gaetz.

One story claims that Gaetz “brushed his thumb across [her[ chin” and asked her, “Has anyone ever told you that you’re a national treasure?”

In another instance, Hutchinson recalls Gaetz allegedly knocking on House Speaker Kevin McCarthy‘s (R-California) cabin door during a Camp David retreat, looking for Hutchinson. When asked what he needed, he allegedly claimed that “he was lost and needed [Hutchinson] to escort him back to his cabin.” McCarthy told him “to get a life” before closing the door.

While discussing her new book on MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show, Rachel Maddow asked Hutchinson what she thought of a statement Gaetz provided the talk show host, denying the alleged incidents.

“I don’t remember either of...

MSNBC Posts Significant Viewer Gains In August As Donald Trump Indictments Dominate Coverage; Fox News Still Leads Among News Networks
Image
Donald Trump’s multiple indictments helped propel MSNBC to significant viewership gains during the month of August, while its rivals lost audience compared to the same period a year earlier.

Fox News still topped primetime, and it scored with last week’s coverage of the first Republican presidential debate, which drew 12.8 million viewers on the network and Fox Business. Fox News said the figure rose to 14.5 million when streaming, digital and encore airings were added. The debate was the highest rated non-sports telecast of the year in total viewers, the network said.

In primetime, Fox News averaged 2.03 million viewers, down 13% from the same month a year earlier. MSNBC averaged 1.55 million, up 19% from August, 2022. CNN averaged 723,000, down 1%.

Hillary Clinton’s Reaction To Trump 2020 Election Case Indictments On ‘The Rachel Maddow Show’ Goes Viral
Image
Hillary Clinton was all laughs and giggles Monday during her appearance on The Rachel Maddow Show, which coincided with a Georgia grand jury returning 10 indictments in the Trump 2020 election interference case.

“I can’t believe this,” Clinton said while she laughed as Maddow introduced her on the show.

Clinton leaned back in her chair and laughed some more as the MSNBC host said, “This is not the circumstances in which I expected to be talking to you.”

“Nor me Rachel,” Clinton added. “It’s always good to talk to you. Honestly, I didn’t think that it would be under these circumstances. Yet another set of indictments.”

Rachel Maddow Is Still Waiting for a Republican to Say Trump ‘Didn’t Do It’
Image
Rachel Maddow, broadcast journalist known for her MSNBC slot “The Rachel Maddow Show,” says the secret to successful journalist is simple: “Life is short. Tell the truth and see how it lands. That’s it.”

This year, Maddow is being honored with the 2023 Variety and Rolling Stone Truth Seekers Award. She sat down during the Truth Seekers Summit, presented by Showtime, with Variety’s co-editor-in-chief Ramin Setoodeh to talk about her extensive career, the current landscape of journalism and the very recent indictment of the 45th president.

On the heels of Donald Trump’s third indictment, Setoodeh asked Maddow to share her views on the latest loop in the former president’s political rollercoaster.

“The linchpin there is that the justice department won’t indict you while you are in office as President committing crimes, they will wait until you leave office,” she said. “But when your crime is designed...

Fox News Tops July Ratings With Retooled Primetime Lineup, But All Cable News Networks See Declines Versus 2022
Image
Fox News’ retooled primetime lineup topped rivals in July, but all cable news networks saw audience erosion versus the same month a year ago.

Jesse Watters Primetime, which debuted in the 8 p.m. Et time slot on July 17, averaged 2.4 million viewers, an improvement over the temporary occupant of the period, Fox News Tonight, with its series of rotating hosts, after Tucker Carlson’s show was pulled in April. Tucker Carlson Tonight averaged 3.1 million viewers in July, 2022.

Another schedule change was the move of Greg Gutfeld up an hour to 10 p.m. Et. Gutfeld! averaged 1.98 million viewers and 252,000 in the 25-54 demo. The latter was enough to place it second in that category, to Fox News’s The Five, which averaged 254,000. The Five also was the most watched cable news show, averaging 2.59 million viewers.

Overall, though, audiences were off versus July 2022, with Fox News and CNN seeing the most significant drops.
