'The Pink Panther' "The Pink Package Plot" (1968)
Opening thoughts: DePatie-Freleng Enterprises' output was very hit and miss, or at least post-1970 it was, especially the later theatrical series. With hits such as Pink Panther and the Ant and the Aardvark, and duds such as Crazylegs Crane. For me, The Pink Panther on the whole was the studio's best theatrical series, though The Inspector and Ant and the Aardvark ones come close. It did become very variable from the mid-70s onwards, but the 60s-early 70s output contained some of the studio's best work.
A vast majority of the previous 1968 Pink Panther cartoons are very good and more. 'Pinkadilly Circus', 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Pink' and 'Little Beaux Pink' being classics or near that level. 'Pink Valiant' is the weakest, and while very average it still manages to be watchable. 'The Pink Package Plot' is one of the best Pink Panther cartoons from that year. If anybody has never seen this or a Pink Panther cartoon, and is doubting DePatie-Freleng Enterprises' appeal from watching Crazylegs Crane or Tijuana Toads, 'The Pink Package Plot' is a good example of why the studio shouldn't be met with too much scorn.
Good things: Everything. Pink does what he does best, being cool, cute, likable and funny. His statue imitation agreed is not something to forget in the long run. 'The Pink Package Plot' is colourfully animated and fluidly if simply drawn, advantaged also by vibrant music scoring and also that classic theme tune.
It is also never dull, and is quite possibly one of the least predictable and most inventive of the Pink Panther cartoons. You expect a Pink Panther cartoon to be entertaining and at least be funny, 'The Pink Package Plot' is both those things and at its best moments are genuinely hilarious, never being less than amusing. All the gags are well-timed and make their mark. The ending rounds things off nicely.
Closing thoughts: Concluding, everything a Pink Panther cartoon should be. Very entertaining, visually colourful and inventively constructed.
10/10.
