As his lost 70s songs emerge, the Oscar-winner and musician explains how the magic of art keeps him upbeat even after losing homes to LA fires
A rainy day in Santa Barbara, and Jeff Bridges sits in his garage, wondering where his favourite spectacles have got to. We are in the middle of a rangy conversation on a video call, meandering our way from Bob Dylan to the anthropomorphism of bees, via Crazy Heart, Cutter’s Way and The Big Lebowski. There are sidetracks and double-backs and loose threads. Intermittently, an unseen assistant hands the actor pairs of glasses seemingly identical to the ones he is already wearing. Bridges, in a soft brown cardigan, inspects each pair and dismisses them. “Where was I?” he asks.
The garage here serves as Bridges’ jam space and ceramics workshop. He has drums set up for his grandson, and a picture of Captain Beefheart on the wall.

Depending on who you ask, Arizona is known as The Grand Canyon State and The Copper State. But if you ask us, it should also be called The Grand Cinema State or The Celluloid State, based on its proud filmmaking history. Given its proximity to Hollywood and stunning scenery that stretches for miles in every direction, Arizona has been the filming location for westerns, science fiction films, and pretty much every genre under the desert sun. In fact, Old Tucson Studios is known as the "Hollywood In The Desert," and was the site of movies and TV shows like "The Bells of St. Mary's, "Rio Bravo," "Gunsmoke," "Little House on the Prairie," and "Three Amigos!"
You're probably thinking, "Wait a minute, wasn't 'Three Amigos!' set in Mexico, 'Rio Bravo' in Texas, 'Bells of St. Mary's in the inner city?" Yep, you're right on all counts. From "Planet of the Apes,...

In Jeff Bridges’ 1977 Rolling Stone cover story, the actor plays “Kong” — a truly wild and oddly impassioned song he wrote and sang, inspired by the lead creature of the King Kong remake Bridges was filming at the time — for writer Tim Cahill. Nearly five decades later, the world is getting to hear that long-lost track and 10 others, all recorded by Bridges and a musically gifted group of friends from high school. Bridges’ Slow Magic, due April 12 in record stores and April 11 online, is a deeply enjoyable collection that unearths the...

We have ourselves a race! The Oscar contests for Best Actor and Best Actress got especially interesting at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday because the winners disagreed with another industry peer group honor, the BAFTA Awards. But who tends to win the Oscar under those circumstances, the SAG winner, the BAFTA winner, or someone else entirely?
SEE2025 Oscars race scorecard: 'Conclave,' Timothée Chalamet pull off SAG Awards wins while Demi Moore rebounds
Let's start with Best Actress, where Demi Moore (The Substance) won the SAG Award while Mikey Madison (Anora) won BAFTA. This is the fifth year in a row that the two awards diverged. Let's break down all those disagreements year by year.
2023: Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon) won SAG, Emma Stone (Poor Things) won BAFTA — Oscar went to the BAFTA winner.

Christian Bale's Most Underrated Performances Happened 10 Years Apart in Movies by the Same Director
With the awards season well underway and the Academy Awards quickly approaching, it is time to revisit and reconsider the greatest movie acting performances of the 21st century. Whether it's a supporting role, or a lead role, a man or a woman, a blockbuster or an understated indie film, each and every award-nominated performance has something to appreciate. From Daniel Day-Lewis in There Will Be Blood to Charlize Theron in Monster, to Christopher Plummer in Beginners, to Da'Vine Joy Randolph in The Holdovers, there have been so many mind-blowing performances since the turn of the century, but only one of them can be the best. One particularly strong contender comes from the Best Supporting Actor category of the 83rd Academy Awards.
Christian Bale's first and only Oscar victory is also one of the best. In 2010, he took home the Best Supporting Actor award for his role in the Mark Wahlberg-led film The Fighter.

The Best Original Screenplay Oscar race has become a pain — and it could become A Real Pain’s. If it does, the film will become the first screenplay winner in either category not to hail from a Best Picture nominee in 20 years.
2024’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was the last original screenplay champ that was not up for Best Picture. In adapted, it goes back further to 1998’s Gods and Monsters. Both of these occurred when Best Picture was a field of five. In the preferential ballot era, all 30 original and adapted screenplay winners thus far have been Best Picture nominees.
That does not bode well for A Real Pain, which failed to make the Best Picture lineup of 10. But Jesse Eisenberg’s script has refused to go away. It has pocketed the second-most awards in the category this season after Sean Baker’s Anora and won...

Before "La La Land" was causing chaos at the Oscars, musicals were putting the ceremony in another mini-crisis back in 2008. That was the year that saw the box office hit "Enchanted" (a Disney kids film starring Amy Adams) nominated for three songs: "Happy Working Song," "So Close," and "That's How You Know." Those tunes lost to a ditty from the lesser-known Irish film "Once," titled "Falling Slowly."
The year before, another popular musical in the form of "Dreamgirls" (which is about a 1960s music trio and stars Beyoncé) was also nominated for three songs, all of which also lost to a movie with only one nomination. That time the winner was "I Need to Wake Up" from Davis Guggenheim and Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth." This was the first time a documentary had ever won the award.
Both outcomes were somewhat controversial at the time, mainly because they were...

Bruce Springsteen continues to support The Bear star Jeremy Allen White, who plays the former in the upcoming biopic Deliver Me From Nowhere. It’s always encouraging to get approval from The Boss, who, as Variety reported, stated that White’s portrayal of him is one “the fans will deeply recognize.”
Springsteen’s support of White has included showing up on the set of Deliver Me From Nowhere, which is being directed by Crazy Heart's Scott Cooper. Springsteen and his longtime manager Jon Landau — who is played by Succession’s Jeremy Strong in the film — have been very involved in the production.

Emmy-winning actor Jeremy Allen White (The Bear) is getting some high praise from The Boss himself, Bruce Springsteen, for his performance in the biopic Deliver Me From Nowhere. In the film, which is reportedly due out this year, the former Shameless actor plays Bruce Springsteen, and the Grammy-winning musician says he’s done a great job with his iconic songs for the movie.
“He sings well. He sings very well,” Springsteen said, per The Wrap, during an appearance on Sirius Xm’s E Street Radio. Springsteen continued, “You know, and Jeremy Strong and Odessa Young, you know, it’s a tremendous cast of people. They cast the film beautifully, so it’s very exciting.”
The musician has been able to visit the set of the movie based on the book of the same name by Warren Zanes and follows the musician as he makes his sixth studio album, Nebraska, which...

The ending of Yellowstone may have left a bad taste in some people's mouths, but there are undoubtedly still a legion of Taylor Sheridan fans out there who still love his work. The filmmaker is arguably at his best when writing film scripts, as evidenced by Sicario, Wind River, and Hell or High Water. That latter film is arguably his most acclaimed script, garnering a massive 97% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes and an 88% audience rating. The film earned Sheridan an Oscar nomination for his script, and was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Editing, and Best Supporting Actor, with that nod going to star Jeff Bridges. Now Hell or High Water is a big streaming hit eight years after its release.
The Western heist film stars Bridges alongside Chris Pine, Ben Foster, Gil Birmingham, Dale Dickey, and Sheridan himself, and was directed by David Mackenzie. Its plot synopsis reads as...

While many children of famous actors follow their parents into the profession, it is pretty rare that the child equals or surpasses the achievements of their parent. A few names come to mind: Jane Fonda, Michael Douglas, Angelina Jolie. And Jeff Bridges definitely belongs on that list.

It’s a good year for the musically inclined. This awards season is full of actors who sing. And that doesn’t just mean the performers who were already known for their vocal chops like musical theater star Cynthia Erivo and pop singer Ariana Grande in “Wicked.” There are a number of singing actors for whom music isn’t their primary claim to fame, like Timothée Chalamet in “A Complete Unknown,” Zoe Saldaña in “Emilia Pérez,” Angelina Jolie in “Maria,” Kingsley Ben-Adir in “Bob Marley: One Love,” and even Saoirse Ronan in “Blitz.” Will those stars get a bump for showing their vocal range in addition to their dramatic range?

When it comes to the embodiment of cool, American style, Bruce Springsteen likely comes to many a mind. The Boss, as he is so known, has been captivating crowds the world over with his anthemic rock songs, intimate lyrics, and self-possessed jeans-and-t-shirt style. And no one, perhaps, represents that cool more right now than The Bear's Jeremy Allen White, who is starring as the singer in Scott Cooper's biopic, Deliver Me From Nowhere.
So it was a thrill to see the duo embrace on the Bayonne, New Jersey set this past weekend, when Springsteen made a surprise stop to check out how White and the rest of the cast and crew are doing with bringing his life story to the big screen (via British GQ).

Specifically, “Deliver Me From Nowhere” is based on Warren Zanes’ book of the same name, which chronicles the making of Bruce Springsteen’s 1982 “Nebraska” album. Check out the first look as White in the role above.
In a statement to press, Cooper called the beginning of production “an incredibly humbling and thrilling journey.”

Disney’s 20th Century Studios plans to release a film next year about the making of Bruce Springsteen’s iconic 1982 album “Nebraska.” The movie will tell the story behind the recording of Springsteen’s stripped-down album, which marked a change in style. Scott Cooper will direct and write the film, adapting the book “Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska: The Making of an American Masterpiece” by Warren Zanes.
Cooper, known for directing “Crazy Heart” and “Hostiles,” said Springsteen’s album had a big influence on his work. He stated that “Nebraska” portrayed life’s hardships and hope in a raw, real way. Cooper wants the film to capture the feel of the original music while bringing the book’s narrative to the screen accurately.
The film has support from Bruce Springsteen and his manager Jon Landau. Cooper noted they have helped shape the project from the beginning. An experienced production team that...

The first look at “The Bear” star Jeremy Allen White as Bruce Springsteen in biopic “Deliver Me From Nowhere” has been revealed as production gets underway.
Directed and written by Scott Cooper, “Deliver Me From Nowhere” adapts Warren Zanes’ book of the same name about the making of Springsteen’s 1982 album “Nebraska.” Filming is taking place primarily in Springsteen’s native New Jersey and New York, with additional production in Los Angeles, and the movie is set to hit theaters next year.
According to a press release, Springsteen’s recording of “Nebraska” “marked a pivotal time in his life, one that he would only openly talk about decades after its release. Considering that he has been regarded as one of the greatest American actors ever since his breakout role in The Last Picture Show way back in 1975, theres a slight sense that, for a time, Jeff Bridges was taken for granted by cinephiles. Bridges has played wacky stoners, famous historical figures, and even an alien that takes human form, so to say that he is a versatile performer would be a significant understatement. Despite the immense acclaim that he received for many classic films, Bridges had been overlooked by the Academy Awards up until the first decade of the 21st century. However, Bridges finally won the Best Actor for his performance in Crazy Heart, a unique musical drama that co-starred Colin Farrell.

October was huge for Disney+ and Hulu — but which month isn’t? After the weekly installments of “Agatha All Along” and the staple that is Huluween, the bundled streamers gear up for winter programming this November.
Disney+ continues to be the home for live episodes of “Dancing With the Stars” and the original series “Ayla & The Mirrors,” which continues to air new episodes. Along with new children’s programming and holiday specials like “An Almost Christmas Story,” the streamer will premiere “The Music of John Williams” on November 1, celebrating the acclaimed film composer and his decades-long career with new footage and interviews from those he worked with and inspired.
It’s another big month for movies coming to Hulu, as well as beloved shows like “Ally McBeal” (complete series). Stay tuned for an adaptation of Charles Yu’s “Interior Chinatown” and the docuseries “It’s All Country,” as well as...

Theres nothing more exciting than seeing an A-List actor cast in an awesome action TV show. The best action TV shows ever generally feature actors who are relatively unknown or tend to stick to the smaller screen. So, when a massive name is attached to a project, viewers are far more likely to take an interest in it.
While some action TV shows are canceled too soon, the appearance of an A-lister often helps keep a series on the air. This is proved in other genres, too, and there are many great crime TV shows with A-List actors. From action-packed sequences with brilliant explosions and tense situations to subtler scenes with unexpected deaths and violence, these A-List actors are fantastic additions to these TV shows.

Searchlight Pictures is celebrating a milestone anniversary with … T-shirts!
The studio, which is marking the moment with a variety of initiatives and partners from Ore-Ida and Warby Parker to Hitching Post Winery, has teamed up once again with buzzy Los Angeles brand Hiro Clark to honor its 30th year in business. (The two previously partnered on “Hello Stranger” shirts after the success of the critically acclaimed All of Us Strangers from Andrew Haigh.)
In doing so, Hiro Clark is offering a limited-edition collection of tees, five in total, that retail for $98 apiece in multiple color options. Here’s the part cinephiles need to know: The line of five honors Searchlight’s beloved films including Tamara Jenkins’ 1998 movie Slums of Beverly Hills, Kimberly Peirce’s 1999 film Boys Don’t Cry, Jared Hess’s 2004 film Napoleon Dynamite, Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris’ 2006 film Little Miss Sunshine, and Scott Cooper’s 2009 film Crazy Heart.

Jeff Bridges has long been recognized as one of Hollywood's most versatile and talented actors, with a more than five-decade-long career. Jeff Bridges' best movie roles are known for bringing authenticity and nuance to every role; Bridges has delivered unforgettable performances across various genres. While some of his films have earned him critical acclaim and a lasting legacy, many others have flown under the radar, often overshadowed by his more iconic roles. These lesser-known films reveal his talent's depth and unwavering commitment to his craft, even when the spotlight wasnt as bright.

It's been a long time coming, but the world finally knows, beyond any shadow of a doubt, that Colin Farrell is one of the best actors currently working today. The Irish-born performer got his start in genuinely great projects like "Minority Report," but when he followed that particular film with filler thrillers like "The Recruit" and "S.W.A.T.," it became easy to overlook his talent. (His turn as Bullseye in Ben Affleck's dud "Daredevil" didn't help either.) In 2008, though, he starred in Martin McDonagh's drama "In Bruges" alongside Brendan Gleeson — two collaborators he'd team up with again years later — and in recent years, Farrell's projects have skewed more towards quality like "In Bruges" rather than, say, "Alexander."
The point here is that Colin Farrell has appeared in some pretty excellent projects, and he's really good in all of them...

Scott Cooper hit a home run in his first filmmaking at bat with "Crazy Heart," a melancholy drama about an alcoholic country music singer (Jeff Bridges) who's wrecked his life many times over and is about to crash for the last time despite entering into an unexpectedly healthy relationship with a journalist (Maggie Gyllenhaal). The film earned Bridges his first, long overdue Oscar for Best Actor, and though the film itself was a touch formulaic, Cooper's direction of his first-rate cast gave him a reputation as an actor-friendly filmmaker.
Cooper's follow-up was the moody-as-hell crime yarn "Out of the Furnace," which, even with another spectacular cast, failed to connect with critics. Cooper's sophomore effort missed commercially as well, but he was due another shot with "Crazy Heart" not too far off in the rearview, so he took on the gangster flick "Black Mass." Johnny Depp's gangster movie Black Mass is trending now on Netflix and nearly a decade later, I still can't believe Depp got snubbed for the Oscar. Directed by Scott Cooper, Black Mass chronicles the true story of the real-life crime boss James "Whitey" Bulger, one of the most notorious gangsters and kingpins in United States history. Depp portrays Bulger, who was the brother of Massachusetts State Senator Billy Bulger and eventually became an FBI informant who helped weaken the Italian Mafia's power in New England. Bulger became an infamous figure of the Irish Mob out of South Boston, Massachusetts, and died in federal prison in 2018.
Black Mass has an outstanding supporting cast, which also got widely overlooked at the 2016 Academy Awards. Benedict Cumberbatch, Jesse Plemons, Joel Edgerton, Dakota Fanning, David Harbour, Peter Sarsgaard, and Kevin Bacon were astoundingly all in the same movie and none of them walked away...

Box office success is a poor measure of a movie's quality, and some great actors do their best work in commercial flops. Box office receipts are also affected by marketing campaigns, timing, and several other factors that have nothing to do with the content of the movie itself. There have been plenty of brilliant box office bombs over the years, proving that money isn't everything.
A movie's commercial viability is well beyond an actor's control, so it's not uncommon to see brilliant performances in movies which underwhelm at the box office. Great movies have a good chance of having their reputations restored in the years following their release. This means that an actor can suddenly see one of their forgotten gems being recognized as their best and most popular movie.

“Slow Horses” star Gary Oldman is the frontrunner to win Best Drama Actor at the upcoming Emmys. Oldman earned his first and only Oscar six years ago for his portrayal of World War II-era British prime minister Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour.” That win was sandwiched between two other lead bids for “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” (2012) and “Mank” (2021). His sole Emmy nomination to date came in 2001 for his guest appearance in the two-part seventh season finale of “Friends”; he lost to Derek Jacobi (“Frasier”).
On Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses,” which is based on a series of novels by Mick Herron, Oldman plays Jackson Lamb, a particularly uncouth MI5 officer saddled with the responsibility of supervising a group of service rejects. This constitutes his very first regular role on a continuing series and his first live action TV performance at all in over two decades.

Jeff Bridges made his unofficial screen debut in John Cromwell's 1951 drama "The Company She Keeps" just over a year after he was born. The son of actors Dorothy and Lloyd Bridges, he steadily proved himself a nepo baby of the finest order upon reaching young adulthood. In the 50 years and change since then, he's done it all, be it squaring off with King Kong, riding a light cycle on The Grid, or seeking compensation for the damage to his prized rug. (It really tied his living room together.) He even snagged a long-expected Oscar for playing an alcoholic country singer in Scott Cooper's "Crazy Heart," a film that arrived on the heels of Bridges portraying the first-ever Marvel Cinematic Universe villain in "Iron Man."

Maggie Gyllenhaal might've extended her craft by taking on the director's chair in the award-winning The Lost Daughter and the soon-to-be-released The Bride, but much before that, the actress graced the screen with several remarkable roles. From bringing a whole new facet to Rachel Dawes in The Dark Knight to making a mark as a single mother in love with a recovering alcoholic in Crazy Heart, she has been able to make audiences care for each one of her characters, no matter how big or small each role was.

My favorite scene in the hilarious new film “The Fall Guy” is the one where Emily Blunt (recent Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominee for “Oppenheimer”) belts out the Phil Collins classic “Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)” as Ryan Gosling (recent Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominee for “Barbie”) finds himself in a particularly dramatic — and dangerous — sequence of events.
As Blunt sang with all her heart, I couldn’t help but think of how perfect the timing was.
Forty years ago this very month, the famous power ballad had just completed a three-week reign on top of the Billboard Hot 100. “Against All Odds” was the title song from the romantic thriller starring Jeff Bridges, Rachel Ward and James Woods. The Taylor Hackford-directed movie was met with solid reviews and healthy ticket sales. But its most notable success was Collins’s song, which quickly took the Billboard chart by storm.

Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart) will play the title role in Grendel, a live-action monster flick from The Jim Henson Company, for which Palisades Park Pictures is launching international sales ahead of Cannes.
Grendel is the tale of the legendary monster at the heart of the Beowulf epic poem who steps forth to tell his side of this riveting story. Directed by Robert D.
