Disaster scenario we are looking at in this south korean action thriller dramedy, as the title says its about a sudden sink in the ground that swallows a 5 story building and much more, made on south korean premisses and wit, with all the cultural nodding, screaming and slapping thats so usual in their films.
Its not unusual building bad buildings on a rotten underground in south korea, also a history with motheating corruption and greed due to sky high prices for a living lot combined with a long geographical history of sinkholes, make this topic of events interesting.
Its the first sinkhole disaster movie ive noted, and the plots and drive of action mustve been inspired by the norwegian consepts of ''the wave' and ''quake'', there are so much that happens in a short time, that even the grumpy old man did his best to push and pull (on the sofa) to help the survivors. And there are also mediocre parts of compulsary korean rites that has to be there just to be accaimed as worth watching which may be daft and unusual to see outside east asia, and there are some inconsistencies that bends every physical laws of reality, and things you might shouldnt do I. C. E..
but its fun and scary, loads of mud and dirt , an amazing set of special effects that mustve been overwhelming in the cinema theater, so if you are in for the adrenaline have a look.
The cast is fairly well known faces from the korean tv-world, the acts is not outstanding in any way, but as a team it works. So whether or not, a sinkhole makes challenges for everyone, and remember your gps and cellphone doesnt work at 400 meters bsl, so you better be prepared and start climbing the rugged wall before YOU fall in...

The Koreans aren't particularly known for their disaster movies although over the past decade the likes of THE TOWER and THE TUNNEL stand out for being particularly suspenseful and well-mounted examples of the genre. SINKHOLE is something else entirely, more comedy and melodrama than disaster flick, although many of the genre's staples are present. The film is preoccupied with home ownership and house prices and follows the escapades of a group of apartment dwellers when their building descends below the earth. The story is totally preposterous and the dodgy CGI doesn't help, but the acting is on point and the cast work well together. However, the second half falls apart a bit and feels surprisingly listless given the premise.
A man and his family move into the home they've waited years for only to find that there may be some issues with the building foundation. Soon they are in a sinkhole nightmare.
I was expecting a bit more thrill than I got from this but what it lacked it thrill was compensated with humor. Overall, I found it to be an enjoyable watch.

Well, if you enjoyed the 2021 movie "The Tower" (aka "Ta-weo") then you will also like "Sinkhole", given the director is the same behind both movies, and both movies are disaster movies with a very intense feel to it.
The storyline told in "Sinkhole" is certainly entirely new for me to see in the disaster movie genre, and that was rather refreshing. So writer Cheol-Hong Jeon definitely managed to come up with something new and exciting for this movie. Thumbs up for that accomplishment, because it really added a lot of excitement to the movie and provided good entertainment.
For a disaster movie, then "Sinkhole", much like "The Tower", is a very intense movie that puts the audience right in the chaos, and director Ji-Hoon Kim certainly manages to do that well. So this is a movie where you are rather involved in what is going on, and there isn't a dull moment throughout the course of the storyline.
Visually then "Sinkhole" is great. The special effects look really good and realistic, and the CGI and practical effects teams really brought the disaster to life in a very believable manner. So you are in for quite the visual treat if you opt to sit down and watch "Sinkhole" - which I can warmly recommend that you do.
The acting performances in "Sinkhole" are good, and they definitely had managed to hire a good ensemble of actors and actresses to participate in the movie.
This is definitely a movie that you should watch if you enjoy disaster movies.
My rating of "Sinkhole" lands on a well-deserved seven out of ten stars.

Although the set pieces are pretty spectacular, this disaster movie falls apart for a few reasons. Some of the logistical lunacy is just too hard to swallow. The characters are more stereotypes than fully developed personalities. And the tone tries to balance goofy humor with tragic deaths... never quite managing to toe that impossible line.

- TriviaThe rolling end credits has the English word CAST followed by a long list in Korean; then the English word STAFF followed by more Korean; then DIGITAL IMAGE TECHNICIAN followed by job titles in English next to technicians' names in Korean. Later there is DIGITAL IDEA in English following by job titles in English next to technicians' names in Korean followed by several more headings in English with job titles in English and technicians' names in Korean before reverting to all Korean. At the very end a number of corporate logos are in English. The very last line is the copyright information in English.
