On AMC, he ushered us into a world of the living dead and now he’s bringing us face-to-face with demons. Earlier this month we reported that the lead role had been cast in Robert Kirkman’s Outcast TV series, and that The Guest director Adam Wingard is set to helm the pilot. We now have additional casting news for the exorcism drama that will air on Cinemax, as four actors have now been added to the cast.
Deadline reports that Reg E. Cathey (American Psycho, Se7en), Julia Crockett (The Absence), Wrenn Schmidt (The Americans, Our Idiot Brother), and Kip Pardue (Hostel: Part III) have joined the ranks of Outcast.
The exorcism drama follows Kyle Barnes (Patrick Fugit), “a young man who’s been plagued by possession since he was a child. He sets out to seek answers, only to uncover something that could end all life on Earth as we know it.

When George A. Romero created Night of the Living Dead, the movie originally carried the title Night of the Flesh Eaters. The title was changed at the last moment and the copyright was lost, immediately putting the film into public domain.
That means that anyone can remake or re-imagine the movie and one of the newer projects is Night of the Living Dead: Origins 3D. The movie has been in development for a number of years now, but it’s alive and well and we have a new casting update:

Alright, before you jump the gun and judge Remy and I based on David Edelstein’s over-reactionary yet sickly fitting genre-describing term, just know “torture porn” doesn’t exactly depict the actions on-screen with exact duplication. No, we aren’t watching people fornicate and kill each other simultaneously. Well, at least I’m not, can’t exactly speak for what Remy does in his free time, but the term “torture porn” is more of a horror sub-genre description which focuses mightily on artistic visual gore over deeply rooted story material. Stress on the torture, soft on the porn, depending on the film that is.
Remy: So, you’re telling me “torture porn” Isn’T when my girlfriend and I…
Nato: No, whatever you’re about to say, no.
The History
“Torture porn” isn’t new by any means, but like other recent movements, the past decade has seen a large resurgence of sub-genre specific films.

With the latest Hostel movie released straight to DVD, Matt looks back at Eli Roth’s horror series, and at its gradual fall from grace...
In 2006, writer/director Eli Roth’s horror film Hostel was released in cinemas. Produced on a small budget, the film was a financial success, pulling in more than $80m around the world as well as winning a strong fan base. A sequel was announced shortly after, and it seemed that a new horror franchise had been established.
Now, six years later, a third entry in the Hostel series has been released. Roth is no longer involved. The film has not seen a theatrical release, instead given a low key debut on home video to little fanfare. So the question is, what’s happened to the Hostel series?

Like (some of) its heroes, this is a franchise that will not die. Hostel: Part III sees another group of unwary young partygoers fall victim to a combination of bad luck, bad planning and some very bad people; hangovers and love bites are the least of their worries. And here to give you a taste is the entire opening sequence of the film, just cause it's Monday and you might need scaring awake. The film sees four friends on a bachelor party in Vegas lured off the Strip to a private party by two of what the tabloid press would undoubtedly call "beauties". Unfortunately, the hedonistic delights they have planned turn out to be a front for the Elite Hunting Club we've seen before, with icksome consequences. The cast includes the likes of Kip Pardue and Thomas Kretschmann, and it's all directed by Scott Spiegel. brightcove.createExperiences();Hostel: Part III...

Hostel: Part III
Stars: Kip Pardue, Brian Hallisay, John Hensley, Sarah Habel, Skyler Stone, Zulay Henao, Thomas Kretschmann | Written by Michael D. Weiss | Directed by Scott Speigel
High stakes gambling takes on a whole new meaning as Hostel Part III, the third film in the Hostel franchise, takes the story from the wilds of the Eastern block to the gambling capital of the world – Las Vegas, as four friends in town for a bachelor party are invited to a private soiree by a pair of sexy strippers. Only the party isn’t quite what the four expected as they’re subjected to a perverse game of torture, where members of Hostel’s infamous “Elite Hunting Club” put on a sadistic show for those wanting a little more “thrill” to their gambling.
The Hostel franchise has always been one to divide audiences – there are those that relish in the gore and...

I will mention first and foremost that I have never been a fan of this series. When Eli Roth was at the helm, I thought Hostel was gimmicky and cheap, playing off the success of gore driven movies like Final Destination and Saw. I have always liked the idea of the Elite Hunting Club and the kill scenes were very good, but I just thought the movies had little substance. Obviously most of you don’t think the same or the films would not have gotten the blockbuster success that they have. Even with all that, it was no surprise that Roth would leave the franchise and the next film would get a straight to DVD release.
The next installment, Hostel: Part III stars Kip Pardue (Remember The Titans), Brian Hallisay (Bottoms Up), and John Hensley(Nip Tuck). Directed by Scott Spiegel (Intruder), Hostel: Part III involves Pardue taking Hallisay...

A group of men throwing a bachelor party in Las Vegas find themselves the unwilling participants in a live execution show.
Without the homosexual or lesbian angel of the first two films, this third entry in the Hostel series lacks the distinctiveness of the first two films, but all in all this is far more satisfying entry. Hostel: Part III is a slick, stylish well made film with a far more involving story this time around. There is unpredictable twists and turns that abound throughout the film. What really makes this entry though, is its understanding of the foreplay involved in creating suspense. For the gore fans out there, the gore is toned down this time around. In a way, Hostel: Part III feels like an attempt to bridge the divide between its own franchise and the Hangover series, and not just in the superficial Las Vegas connection. Both series revel in placing ugly Americans in horrific situations they unwittingly placed themselves in through their own arrogance and indulgence, and playing out those consequences in locales barely more developed than the hedonistic protagonists. But if anything, Hostel has always been less sparing in its viciousness, and the glimmery streets of Vegas are a poor substitute for the industrial villages of Eastern Europe. Hostel Part III may intermittently show signs of life, but the series sorely misses Eli Roth.

There aren't a ton of noteworthy releases to spend your leftover Christmas money and gift cards on this week, but if you're a horror fan there just might be a few titles of interest to you. The biggest release of the week is Final Destination 5, which seems to have appeased fans more than the previous installment in the franchise, along with the found footage lunar landing horror flick Apollo 18. Direct-to-dvd sequel Hostel: Part III also hits stores today, as does the crowd-funded Australian horror film The Tunnel and Uwe Boll's Dungeon Siege sequel In The Name of the King 2: Two Worlds starring Dolph Lundgren. Other options include the Jason Sudeikis comedy A Good Old Fashioned Orgy and Rowan Joffe's crime thriller Brighton Rock, but your best bet probably lies with this week's TV releases: Shameless: The Complete First Season, Archer: Season 2 and The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret...

No horror fan is excited to hear that the next installment of their favorite franchise is going to be a direct-to-video release. Most of these films are cheap cash-ins that lack any kind of plot, talented actors, or an experienced director. When it was revealed that Hostel: Part III would be a direct-to-video effort, fans were understandably skeptical, but this film attempts to break mold and succeeds on multiple levels.
To mix things up from the first two films, Hostel: Part III moves the Elite Hunting Club to Las Vegas and why not? Out of all the cities United States, Las Vegas is arguably the best place to set up shop. There are plenty of tourists to kidnap, bored millionaires who need new ways to spend their money, and plenty of open land to hide your establishment.

In the first part of our visit to the sets of Hostel: Part III, we took you through the cavernous halls of Detroit's Masonic Temple, which for the purposes of the latest installment in the franchise, serves as a mobile torture facility for the Elite Hunting Club stationed on the outskirts of Las Vegas. Today we speak with the cast of Hostel III from set to shed some light on the direct-to-video sequel, which releases December 27th. The film starts off as your standard party flick. A group of best buds hit the least original bachelor party locale for a night of reckless fun before their pal Scott (Brian Hallisay) ties the knot. But when the group is seduced into a very special, very exclusive club on the outskirts of town,...

Four years after Hostel: Part II, the franchise that helped to define the torture porn sub-genre returns with direct-to-video Hostel: Part III, hitting stores December 27th, 2011. For anyone sick of that sweet Christmas cheer, the latest Hostel promises some stomach-turning bloodshed to help you get back to the dark side. Series creator and director of the first two films, Eli Roth, is uninvolved with the latest entry, helmed by longtime Sam Raimi cohort Scott Spiegel (From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money). The locale also shifts from Slovakia to Sin City, though producers probably should have given some consideration to setting the film right where it was being shot, in an economically devastated...

Hostel: Part III will be released on DVD next week and I recently had the opportunity to speak with director Scott Spiegel about the film. For those unfamiliar with Scott’s work, he’s no stranger to horror or the Hostel franchise. He served as producer on both Hostel and Hostel: Part II, was co-writer of Evil Dead 2 and has directed Intruder and From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money.
Scott and I talked about moving the Elite Hunting Club to Las Vegas, Eli Roth’s earlier idea for a new Hostel film, my favorite death scene from the movie, and the possibility of Hostel: Part IV.
**Spoiler Warning- While the interview is mostly spoiler-free, the interview does discuss death scenes and minor plot items**
Was the idea for Hostel: Part III something you pitched to Sony or did they approach you?
Scott Spiegel: They came to me.

Scott Spiegel, the co-writer of Evil Dead II and the director of Intruder and From Dusk Till Dawn 2, is back in the director’s chair, spreading the red in his accustomed over-the-top fashion in Hostel: Part III, the direct-to-dvd sequel hitting December 27.
In this chapter, the mayhem is relocated to Las Vegas where a bachelor party goes terribly awry and, naturally, the Elite Hunting Club is responsible. Shock spoke to Spiegel about picking up the franchise where Eli Roth left off.

Hostel: Part III will be available on DVD next week and keep an eye out for our review and additional features later this week. Until then, a new clip from the film has been released and we’ve included it for you to watch.
“Hostel: Part 3 brings the underground world of the notorious Elite Hunting Club to “Sin City”, where human torture has been turned into a high stakes gambling opportunity.
High stakes gambling takes on a sinister new meaning in this third chapter of the terrifying Hostel series. While attending a bachelor party in Las Vegas, four friends are enticed by two sexy escorts to join them at a private party way off the Strip. Once there, they are horrified to find themselves the subjects of a perverse game of torture, where members of the Elite Hunting Club are hosting the most sadistic show in town.”

Oren Peli, the man behind the first Paranormal Activity film, has managed to parlay that films success in a career – producing the Pa sequels, as well as the huge horror hit Insidious. Well now he’s taking the terror to television with his new show for ABC entitled The River, and here’s the poster:
Jeff Galfer stars as “Sammy” alongside Thomas Kretschmann (Hostel: Part III, Resident Evil: Apocalypse, King Kong), Bruce Greenwood, and Leslie Hope in the ABC Studios television project whose pilot episode was directed by none other than Jaume Collet-Serra (The Orphan, House of Wax).
Hope stars as “Tess,” a world traveler and top-notch producer who, six months after her TV explorer husband “Emmet Cole” (Greenwood) goes missing in the Amazon, receives a signal from his beacon. Convinced that Emmet is alive, Tess forces her reluctant son, “Lincoln” (Joe Anderson), to abandon his medical studies and lead a rescue expedition.

A strange thing happened while I was watching Hostel III. Going in, I knew it was a Dtv release, so I wasn’t expecting too much. I really dug the first two flicks, and still think that Eli Roth’s Part II gets way too much flack when it’s actually a pretty tight picture. Those two movies work together to form one story, so with Hostel Part III, I wasn’t expecting a continuation, but more of a cash in. Nothing wrong with that, I suppose. A cash in would still be better than most crap floating around out there.
Direct To Video releases have come a long way since we first started seeing them in the 80’s. Back then, if a film wasn’t released in theaters, there was probably a good reason for it. They probably stank of monkey feces (sorry to...

The Eli Roth-less 'Hostel: Part III' hits DVD and digital download later this month courtesy of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Scott Spiegel helms the third movie in the torturous trilogy which moves the action from Eastern Europe all the way slap-bang into Las Vegas. A stackathon of new stills from the threequel have popped over at Dread Central but gore-hounds may be disappointed that none of them are particularly revealing in the 'sickening' department so we guess you'll just have to pick up the DVD at the end of the month. Kip Pardue ('Stag Night'), Thomas Kretschmann ('Transsiberian'), John Hensley, Sarah Habel, Barry Livingston, Kelly Thiebaud (below), Brain Hallisay, Skyler Stone, Danny Jacobs, Chris Coy, Alicia Vela-Bailey and Gordon Michaels all star. Check out just some of the new stills and DVD artwork below. You can head over to the Dread Central link below for the rest!
