Today the Us cable network announced the release date for Dagen Merrill's Atomica (formerly Deep Burial and Half Life). The sci-fi thriller will start in U.S. cinemas on March 17th, then will be on VOD and Digital HD on March 21st. Signature Entertainment have recently picked up supernatural horror The Culling, from director Rustam Branaman, for distribution in the United Kingdom.

Set for a DVD release on March 23rd 2015, the film involves a lost and lonely, young girl who encounters five friends at an isolated cafe and they bring her back to her home. But, a secret lies in the bowels of this cursed structure, one in which none of the friends can escape.

On AMC, he ushered us into a world of the living dead and now he’s bringing us face-to-face with demons. Earlier this month we reported that the lead role had been cast in Robert Kirkman’s Outcast TV series, and that The Guest director Adam Wingard is set to helm the pilot. We now have additional casting news for the exorcism drama that will air on Cinemax, as four actors have now been added to the cast.

Deadline reports that Reg E. Cathey (American Psycho, Se7en), Julia Crockett (The Absence), Wrenn Schmidt (The Americans, Our Idiot Brother), and Kip Pardue (Hostel: Part III) have joined the ranks of Outcast.

The exorcism drama follows Kyle Barnes (Patrick Fugit), “a young man who’s been plagued by possession since he was a child. He sets out to seek answers, only to uncover something that could end all life on Earth as we know it.

IFC Midnight, in association with Five 7 Media, is releasing The Damned in theaters on August 29th, but first, thanks to Lakeshore Records, the The Damned - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is available today, August 19th!

Hostel 3 director to executive produce afterlife fantasy film.

Cupsogue Pictures have announced that Scott Spiegel is to executive produce its upcoming fantasy feature Welcome to Purgatory.

Spiegel is best known for co-writing Evil Dead II (1987) with director Sam Raimi, producing Hostel (2005) with Eli Roth, and directing Hostel: Part III (2011).

Directed by Gene Fallaize, Welcome to Purgatory stars Nathan Jones, Jack O’Halloran, Tory Kittles and Stephen Marcus.

The film follows three new arrivals as they navigate the Afterlife, helped by Guardian Paul. They find the afterlife in ruins amidst a growing war between good and evil. All the rules of the Afterlife have been broken and both pain and pleasure can be experienced. While death here may not be final, it leads directly to the Seventh Circle of Hell and the group must find a way to fix things before Heaven is ruined for eternity.

When George A. Romero created Night of the Living Dead, the movie originally carried the title Night of the Flesh Eaters. The title was changed at the last moment and the copyright was lost, immediately putting the film into public domain.

That means that anyone can remake or re-imagine the movie and one of the newer projects is Night of the Living Dead: Origins 3D. The movie has been in development for a number of years now, but it’s alive and well and we have a new casting update:

Alright, before you jump the gun and judge Remy and I based on David Edelstein’s over-reactionary yet sickly fitting genre-describing term, just know “torture porn” doesn’t exactly depict the actions on-screen with exact duplication. No, we aren’t watching people fornicate and kill each other simultaneously. Well, at least I’m not, can’t exactly speak for what Remy does in his free time, but the term “torture porn” is more of a horror sub-genre description which focuses mightily on artistic visual gore over deeply rooted story material. Stress on the torture, soft on the porn, depending on the film that is.

In 2006, writer/director Eli Roth’s horror film Hostel was released in cinemas. Produced on a small budget, the film was a financial success, pulling in more than $80m around the world as well as winning a strong fan base. A sequel was announced shortly after, and it seemed that a new horror franchise had been established.

Now, six years later, a third entry in the Hostel series has been released. Roth is no longer involved. The film has not seen a theatrical release, instead given a low key debut on home video to little fanfare. So the question is, what’s happened to the Hostel series?

I will mention first and foremost that I have never been a fan of this series. When Eli Roth was at the helm, I thought Hostel was gimmicky and cheap, playing off the success of gore driven movies like Final Destination and Saw. I have always liked the idea of the Elite Hunting Club and the kill scenes were very good, but I just thought the movies had little substance. Obviously most of you don’t think the same or the films would not have gotten the blockbuster success that they have. Even with all that, it was no surprise that Roth would leave the franchise and the next film would get a straight to DVD release.

A group of men throwing a bachelor party in Las Vegas find themselves the unwilling participants in a live execution show. 

Without the homosexual or lesbian angel of the first two films, this third entry in the Hostel series lacks the distinctiveness of the first two films, but all in all this is far more satisfying entry. Hostel: Part III is a slick, stylish well made film with a far more involving story this time around. There is unpredictable twists and turns that abound throughout the film. What really makes this entry though, is its understanding of the foreplay involved in creating suspense. For the gore fans out there, the gore is toned down this time around. However, the makers of this entry have focused on creating...

In a way, Hostel: Part III feels like an attempt to bridge the divide between its own franchise and the Hangover series, and not just in the superficial Las Vegas connection. Both series revel in placing ugly Americans in horrific situations they unwittingly placed themselves in through their own arrogance and indulgence, and playing out those consequences in locales barely more developed than the hedonistic protagonists. But if anything, Hostel has always been less sparing in its viciousness, and the glimmery streets of Vegas are a poor substitute for the industrial villages of Eastern Europe. Hostel Part III may intermittently show signs of life, but the series sorely misses Eli Roth.

There aren't a ton of noteworthy releases to spend your leftover Christmas money and gift cards on this week, but if you're a horror fan there just might be a few titles of interest to you. The biggest release of the week is Final Destination 5, which seems to have appeased fans more than the previous installment in the franchise, along with the found footage lunar landing horror flick Apollo 18. Direct-to-dvd sequel Hostel: Part III also hits stores today, as does the crowd-funded Australian horror film The Tunnel and Uwe Boll's Dungeon Siege sequel In The Name of the King 2: Two Worlds starring Dolph Lundgren. No horror fan is excited to hear that the next installment of their favorite franchise is going to be a direct-to-video release. Most of these films are cheap cash-ins that lack any kind of plot, talented actors, or an experienced director. When it was revealed that Hostel: Part III would be a direct-to-video effort, fans were understandably skeptical, but this film attempts to break mold and succeeds on multiple levels.

Hostel: Part III will be released on DVD next week and I recently had the opportunity to speak with director Scott Spiegel about the film. For those unfamiliar with Scott’s work, he’s no stranger to horror or the Hostel franchise. He served as producer on both Hostel and Hostel: Part II, was co-writer of Evil Dead 2 and has directed Intruder and From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money.

Scott and I talked about moving the Elite Hunting Club to Las Vegas, Eli Roth’s earlier idea for a new Hostel film, my favorite death scene from the movie, and the possibility of Hostel: Part IV.

Was the idea for Hostel: Part III something you pitched to Sony or did they approach you?

Scott Spiegel: They came to me.

Scott Spiegel, the co-writer of Evil Dead II and the director of Intruder and From Dusk Till Dawn 2, is back in the director’s chair, spreading the red in his accustomed over-the-top fashion in Hostel: Part III, the direct-to-dvd sequel hitting December 27.

In this chapter, the mayhem is relocated to Las Vegas where a bachelor party goes terribly awry and, naturally, the Elite Hunting Club is responsible. Shock spoke to Spiegel about picking up the franchise where Eli Roth left off.

A strange thing happened while I was watching Hostel III. Going in, I knew it was a Dtv release, so I wasn’t expecting too much. I really dug the first two flicks, and still think that Eli Roth’s Part II gets way too much flack when it’s actually a pretty tight picture. Those two movies work together to form one story, so with Hostel Part III, I wasn’t expecting a continuation, but more of a cash in. Nothing wrong with that, I suppose. A cash in would still be better than most crap floating around out there.

Let's face it not much new is coming out in horror this month and Hostel III has the potential to be a great film to watch over the long holiday weeks, not too mention the freezing nights by the fire.
