CEO David Zaslav’s Salary for Running Warner Bros Discovery Is Staggeringly High
Image
It is an open secret that Warner Bros. is bleeding. And David Zaslav is easily at the center of it. The CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery has been the face of innumerable controversial decisions, one after the other, over a rather short tenure.

With a lot of doubts, regarding where the studio is heading under his leadership, doing the rounds, it wouldn’t come as a shock to many that many HBO top executives had to face the heat, including Andrew Cripps and Josh Goldstine. But the 65-year-old is not going anywhere. And even if he were to, he has already received his fair share from the studio.

Hard Boiled | John Woo’s Hong Kong classic has been rescued and restored in 4K
Image
Once feared lost, the original negative of John Woo’s action classic Hard Boiled has been rescued and restored. The 4K disc is due in June.

There’s cool, and then there’s ‘Chow Yun-fat sliding down a banister, shooting bad guys with a toothpick in his mouth’ cool. It’s an early, iconic moment in an action thriller stuffed full of them: 1992’s Hard Boiled cemented director John Woo’s reputation in Hollywood, and remains a high point in Hong Kong cinema.

For years, however, it was thought that Hard Boiled's original print was lost. Although that film – and other films in Woo’s back catalogue – can be purchased on disc online, some knotty rights issues mean a new 4K release was long thought to be impossible.

In the mid-90s, Golden Princess, the production company that made Hard Boiled and numerous other Hong Kong classics, went bust.

Millie Bobby Brown’s $320 Million Netflix Epic Flops Hard: 15% Rotten Tomatoes, AI Controversy Sparks Outrage!
Image
Actor Millie Bobby Brown’s £245M Netflix Epic (Photo Credit – Netflix)

Netflix’s latest blockbuster, The Electric State, was meant to be a triumph after spending a staggering $320 Million budget and setting the record as the streamers most expensive project ever.

Besides, the film also boasted an ensemble cast of Hollywood heavyweights, such as Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt, backed by Woody Harrelson, Ke Huy Quan, Stanley Tucci, Anthony Mackie, and Giancarlo Esposito. And with the Russo brothers, the minds behind the last two Avengers films, at the helm, what could possibly go wrong?

Turns out, quite a lot, apparently.

A Sci-Fi Premise That Should Have Soared

Instead of universal acclaim, the film has been met with an avalanche of criticism, now sitting at a bleak 15% on Rotten Tomatoes. Its ambitious premise, which is a post-war world where robots once fought for their rights, and Brown’s character embarking...

‘Cleaner’ Review: A Charismatic Daisy Ridley Carries a Cheesy but Fun Action Flick Made in the ‘Die Hard’ Mold
Image
Excursions to a galaxy far, far away aside, Daisy Ridley’s career of late has been refreshingly grounded with projects of all scales. From the modest but fiendishly entertaining domestic thriller “Magpie” to the soulful office dramedy “Sometimes I Think About Dying” and the inspirational sports movie “Young Woman and the Sea,” the wide-ranging filmography Ridley has been recently building on her own terms stretches across biting indies and classical family blockbusters alike.

With director and James Bond veteran Martin Campbell’s “Cleaner,” Ridley further expands her repertoire with an old-fashioned and pressure-cooker action flick, dangling from the glass façade of a skyscraper to give both Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt and Bruce Willis’ John McClane a run for their money. In fairness, the tiny pleasures of the predictably paint-by-numbers “Cleaner” aren’t remotely close to anything a white-knuckled “Die Hard” movie or the magnificent “Mission: Impossible” franchise can offer.

Stars: Daisy Ridley, Matthew Tuck, Clive Owen, Lee Boardman, Rufus Jones, Taz Skylar, Ruth Gemmell | Written by Matthew Orton, Simon Uttley, Paul Andrew Williams | Directed by Martin Campbell

Since the original Die Hard took the world by storm in 1988, it has inspired countless sequels and knock-offs. Often built around the same basic premise, these films have become a sub-genre in their own right. From Die Hard 2: Die Harder set in an airport, to Under Siege on a naval vessel, Passenger 57 on a plane, and even Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down in the White House, the formula has been repeated in various locations, with a lone hero taking on the bad guys and saving the hostages.

Now, Cleaner, directed by Martin Campbell and written by Matthew Orton, Simon Uttley (James Hyde – The Very Thought of You), and Paul Andrew Williams, brings the formula back to where it all started,...

Luffy’s Gear 2 Was Copied From an Enemy? 3 Times Luffy Was Caught Copying Enemies’ Attacks

Other than being his usual goofy self, Luffy is a remarkable character as his strength and abilities are formidable in most aspects. Be it Bajrang Gun or Kaminari, his techniques are off the charts in the series.

But that is not all, considering his power-ups and transformation in the series. And though they may seem all too creative, they might have had their fair share of inspirations.

Most specifically, the Gear 2 is based on an unusual yet lethal technique in the series. The Straw Hat captain was inspired by his rivals and foes with his skills and abilities including this gear transformation.

One Piece has instances where the Straw Hat may have copied his adversaries for the signature techniques. And while this seems all too common, the series has had its fair share of inspirations and influences.

Kieran Culkin and Jesse Eisenberg in A Real Pain (2024)
BAFTA nominations 2025 | Hugh Grant gets surprise nod as Conclave leads the pack
Kieran Culkin and Jesse Eisenberg in A Real Pain (2024)
The 2025 BAFTA Film Awards nominations are in – here’s a look at the snubs and the snub-ies.

With A Real Pain star Will Sharpe and last year’s Rising Star Award winner Mia McKenna Bruce taking on hosting duties, the results are in for the films BAFTA’s 8,100 film awards voters consider the best of 2024.

It’s a lovely afternoon for Conclave and Emilia Pérez, leading the awards with 12 and 11 nominations respectively, and a slightly less lovely afternoon for Daniel Craig (who missed out on a Best Actor nod for Queer) and Denzel Washington, who holds onto his title as a no-time BAFTA-nominee after Gladiator II failed to register with voters.

Among the biggest surprises is the addition of Hugh Grant in the Best Actor category for his creepy-man role in Heretic – together with the three nominations for Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance, 2025 is already showing the horror genre much more love than previous years.

Quick Links Marvel's Hawkeye Is Now Receiving the Die Hard Treatment What Makes A Movie or TV Series Required Viewing For Christmas?

It's a debate as old as time, is the iconic 1988 action thriller Die Hard a Christmas movie or not? It seems every December, this conversation resurfaces among the film fans of the world and, despite how heated it can get, there is never a result that pleases everybody. Sure, there are elements of the Christmas holiday season present in Die Hard, but the story itself doesn't revolve around the holiday the same way films like, say, Elf or The Polar Express do. At its core, Die Hard is an action film -- but who's to say the Christmas season can't be action-packed?

With 2024 coming to a close and the holidays arriving, and much like Die Hard, there is one MCU project that often has fans debating if...

Marcia Gay Harden Says Philip Seymour Hoffman Had Mike Nichols Apologize for Being Too Hard on Her
Image
Marcia Gay Harden said that, years after starring in a New York production of “The Seagull” for Mike Nichols, the “Graduate” director apologized for being so hard on her because Philip Seymour Hoffman told him to.

Speaking with “Modern Family” star Jesse Tyler Ferguson in this week’s episode of his “Dinner’s On Me” podcast, Harden said that Nichols blamed her for everything that went wrong with the 2001 New York production.

Harden had just won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “Pollock,” which meant she didn’t have to audition to join the cast, which included Christopher Walken, Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline, Natalie Portman, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Stephen Spinella, Larry Pine, Deborah Monk and John Goodman.

The cast was “bonkers,” so Harden said she didn’t hesitate to say yes. “I had in my mind, my vain little mind, that Mike would see me and realize I was the new Meryl Streep.

When Margot Robbie Slapped DiCaprio ( Photo Credit – Facebook )

Margot Robbie is one of the most well-known stars in Hollywood at the moment. Last year, she and Ryan Gosling took the world by storm with the massive success of Barbie: The Movie. Besides that, Robbie is also known for roles such as Harley Quinn in the Dceu, Sharon Tate in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Tonya Harding in I, Tonya, and more. Just 23 years old at the time of release, Robbie starred in the movie opposite the icon Leonardo DiCaprio, who played the role of Jordan Belfort. Bruce Willis, Demi Moore's Daughters Share Photo of Actor on Thanksgiving
Image
We should all be so lucky to be as loved as Bruce Willis is by his adoring daughters. The iconic action star — who was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia back in 2022 — has rarely been seen since his retirement from acting, but that doesn't mean fans don't care about what he's doing. Quite the opposite, in fact: which is why it's so lovely to see him basking in the glow of familial love with his daughters, Tallulah and Scout Willis, in a new Thanksgiving Day snap shared on Instagram.

Willis' offspring with ex-wife Demi Moore co-shared the sweet and simple snap on Thursday (Thanksgiving Day in the United States) with the caption "grateful" underneath two photos of Tallulah and Scout doting over their adoring father. In the photos, Willis (69) can be seen holding a nameplate that says "Best Dad Ever" surrounded by his daughters on a couch. It's a heartfelt, candid moment to share with the world,...

Image
This topic has been debated for decades since Die Hard was released, but despite what naysayers believe, it is a Christmas movie. The film’s screenwriter himself Steven E. de Souza confirmed in a 2017 Tweet that the film is a Christmas flick, even if the star, Bruce Willis, passionately declared during a 2018 Comedy Central roast that Die Hard is not a Christmas movie. Nonetheless, regardless of beliefs about this national treasure of a film, yippee-ki-yay, because it’s conveniently available to stream for free via Tubi in December, just in time for Christmas!

Twisters Review — Delivering Exactly What Disaster Fans Crave
Image
Twisters releases in theaters on July 17th in Europe and July 19th in the US.

Usually, predictable, generic films full of clichés end up suffering from these characteristics, often seen as negative aspects. Personally, I endorse the theory that execution can turn a fantastic idea into a terrible movie, just as it can tremendously elevate a mere variation of a worn-out premise. I also believe that films can perfectly be what they’re expected to be – nothing more, nothing less. Disaster flicks are known precisely for the attributes mentioned above, but they possess a layer of simple, straightforward entertainment that wins over audiences and critics worldwide. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

It’s, indeed, a special genre. So much so that we’re getting a standalone sequel to a 1996 classic, Twister. Jan de Bont’s original movie inspired Lee Isaac Chung (Minari) and Mark L. Smith (The Revenant...

As U.S. Film Deals Go Small, International Goes Big
Image
One month ago, heading into the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, the most anticipated title for buyers was not necessarily the action-adventure anthology with Pedro Pascal (Freaky Tales) or the Kristen Stewart-fronted post-apocalyptic love story (Love Me). It was Dídi, a coming-of-age film about a 13-year-old in the Bay Area from a first-time feature director with no notable U.S. stars. It quickly landed a deal with Focus Features, while films with shinier stars and higher concepts are still in negotiations for deals.

The U.S. has long been known as the great arbiter of “bigger is better.” But being risk-averse, given current economic conditions and industry trends back home (Disney, Paramount Global, Amazon MGM, and others are currently undergoing layoffs), may, says one U.S. buyer, “no longer mean getting a massive star or big director — it means costing less.” Yet, internationally, the mandate seems to be business as usual,...

Solo Leveling: Best Action Anime Worlds For Sung Jin-Woo
Image
The Winter 2024 anime season introduced anime fans to a brand-new fantasy action anime franchise, Solo Leveling. This popular new show is based on a Korean web novel, a gripping story that charts the rise of protagonist Jin-woo Sung from a weak nobody of a hunter to a famed superstar in the battle against monsters. For now, Jin-woo is a total underdog in the Solo Leveling anime, but he is already getting stronger and leveling up, and longtime fans of the franchise know just how powerful he will become.

Jin-woo Sung is a hunter, one of many fantasy-style fighters who raid numerous dungeons to slay the monsters found inside and protect humanity from their wrath. In that sense, Solo Leveing has strong "monster hunter" vibes, an anime where the heroes specialize in fighting deadly creatures using certain skills or weapons.

Image
Welcome to this week’s review of Tna Wrestling, the latest episode under the return of the Tna branding! Let’s get into the review and see what went down…

Match #1: Nic Nemeth def. Trey Miguel The following is courtesy of tnawrestling.com:

After defeating Zachary Wentz last week, Nic Nemeth must now lock horns with another Rascal in Trey Miguel! Nemeth clotheslines Miguel over the top rope to the floor. Wentz provides a momentary distraction, allowing Miguel to take him out with a dive. Back in the ring, Miguel rakes the eyes, then drives Nemeth shoulder-first into the steel ring post. Nemeth creates separation with a mid-air dropkick to counter Miguel’s springboard. Nemeth delivers repeated elbow drops but Miguel kicks out. Wentz trips up Nemeth in the corner and the referee ejects him from ringside. Miguel soars with the Meteora off the distraction but it’s not enough.

Peacemaker's New Pet Has the Perfect Name (Better Than Eagly)
Image
Warning! Spoilers ahead for Peacemaker Tries Hard #1!The latest animal companion for Peacemaker has a much better name than the hero's avian sidekick Eagly. Christopher Smith's new dog completely changes the world for the hyper-violent crusader for peace.

Peacemaker might not be as well-known as the A-Listers of the DC Universe, but he's experienced a wave of popularity thanks to his onscreen portrayal by John Cena in The Suicide Squad and its follow-up series, Peacemaker. The latter expanded on Smith's lore and introduced a brand-new sidekick for Peacemaker, Eagly, a bald eagle. Despite not having the most creative name, Eagly was presented as Christopher's loyal assistant who could aid the hero in taking down resilient baddies. Peacemaker's bald eagle friend even made the jump to comics in 2022's Strange Love Adventures, which officially canonized the bird in the DC Universe.

Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie Review
Image
For a man who has, for the last 30 years or so, found his life defined largely by the fact that his body moves in unwanted and uncontrollable ways, I get the feeling that the last thing Michael J. Fox is actually wants is to be still.

Davis Guggenheim’s documentary biography is formed around a series of interviews with Fox, footage of his day to day life, and narration taken (as is much of the film’s structure) from his first autobiography, Lucky Man. Still strikes me as being about a man who has always wanted to control the way he and his life move. He played sports as a kid, he talks about how he relied on the mobility of his face and his body in order to do his work as an actor; his ability to control those subtle movements a key part of what he he did.

Westworld (2016)
HBO Now New Releases: May 2020
Westworld (2016)
May isn’t quite summer yet but it is usually time that the networks start wrapping up their newest shows and preparing for a relatively fallow summer period. Since HBO isn’t a network, it has no such business model. But May sees the winding down of some HBO blockbusters all the same.

While there are some notable new releases for HBO in May 2020, the bigger story might be the things that are ending. Westworld concludes its third season on May 3 while new series Run wraps up on May 24. Thankfully the film losses in May aren’t too bad for HBO, unless the Agent Cody Banks saga drives a lot of traffic.

The most notable TV premiere in May is I Know This Much is True, a book adaptation starring Mark Ruffalo. This is a very bleak story coming along at a bleak time in history but perhaps those two things will cancel out.
