Once feared lost, the original negative of John Woo’s action classic Hard Boiled has been rescued and restored. The 4K disc is due in June.

There’s cool, and then there’s ‘Chow Yun-fat sliding down a banister, shooting bad guys with a toothpick in his mouth’ cool. It’s an early, iconic moment in an action thriller stuffed full of them: 1992’s Hard Boiled cemented director John Woo’s reputation in Hollywood, and remains a high point in Hong Kong cinema.

For years, however, it was thought that Hard Boiled's original print was lost. Although that film – and other films in Woo’s back catalogue – can be purchased on disc online, some knotty rights issues mean a new 4K release was long thought to be impossible.

In the mid-90s, Golden Princess, the production company that made Hard Boiled and numerous other Hong Kong classics, went bust.

Sunday’s 2025 BAFTA TV Awards have already seen one Baby Reindeerstar take home her first BAFTA mask. Jessica Gunning, who portrayed Martha Scott in the Netflix mini-series, beat out fellow castmate Nava Mau in the BAFTA TV category of Best Supporting Actress, per Deadline.

Gunning was also up against Katherine Parkinson of Rivals, Maxine Peake of Say Nothing, Monica Nolan of Sherwood, and Sue Johnston of Truelove. Baby Reindeer was created by Richard Gadd, who also stars as Donnie Dunn, an aspiring comedian and bartender who makes friends with a client who turns out to be a stalker. The seven-episode Netflix miniseries concluded its run last year.

With A Real Pain star Will Sharpe and last year’s Rising Star Award winner Mia McKenna Bruce taking on hosting duties, the results are in for the films BAFTA’s 8,100 film awards voters consider the best of 2024.

It’s a lovely afternoon for Conclave and Emilia Pérez, leading the awards with 12 and 11 nominations respectively, and a slightly less lovely afternoon for Daniel Craig (who missed out on a Best Actor nod for Queer) and Denzel Washington, who holds onto his title as a no-time BAFTA-nominee after Gladiator II failed to register with voters.

Among the biggest surprises is the addition of Hugh Grant in the Best Actor category for his creepy-man role in Heretic – together with the three nominations for Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance, 2025 is already showing the horror genre much more love than previous years.

On Wednesday, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced its 78th annual BAFTA Awards nominees, with expected contenders Anora, The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, and Emilia Pérez nominated for Best Film.

Conclave led all films with 12 nominations, including bids for Best Film, Best British Film, Best Director for Edward Berger, Best Adapted Screenplay for Peter Straughan, Best Actor for Ralph Fiennes, and Best Supporting Actress for Isabella Rossellini. It’s the second time BAFTA voters have widely embraced a Berger feature in three years after giving All Quiet on the Western Front 14 nominations in 2023.

The National Board of Review just announced the winners of the 2024 NBR Awards with Wicked winning some of the top awards.

Wicked won both Best Film and Best Director for Jon M. Chu, as well as the NBR Spotlight Award for the “creative collaboration” of stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.

“Wicked represents the pure magic that movies can bring to audiences. Wentz provides a momentary distraction, allowing Miguel to take him out with a dive. Back in the ring, Miguel rakes the eyes, then drives Nemeth shoulder-first into the steel ring post. Nemeth creates separation with a mid-air dropkick to counter Miguel’s springboard. Nemeth delivers repeated elbow drops but Miguel kicks out. Wentz trips up Nemeth in the corner and the referee ejects him from ringside. Miguel soars with the Meteora off the distraction but it’s not enough.

Ministry have unleashed the latest song from their upcoming album, Hopiumforthemasses. The new track, titled “B.D.E.” (aka “Big Dick Energy”), takes aim at toxic misogyny and violence against women.

Jenna Dewan is opening up about the tragic loss of her friend Stephen “tWitch” Boss, who died by suicide in December 2022 at the age of 40.

While attending the National Alliance of Mental Illness Westside Los Angeles (Nami Wla) annual gala on Friday, where she and Derek Hough presented the Heart of a Champion award in Boss’s honour to his wife Allison Holker Boss and their teenage daughter Weslie, Dewan chatted with People about how she’s moving forward from Stephen’s death and why it was important for her to be a part of the event surrounding mental health.

“This is incredible, to have the moment to share in his love, light, and legacy. And being here to support Allison and their family I’ve known for so many years. They are truly the absolute best, biggest-hearted [people]. They take care of everybody else,” the actress and dancer told People on the red carpet.

Daisy Ridley lines up her next project in Cleaner, a Die Hard-style thriller from Casino Royale director Martin Campbell. Ridley’s life changed forever when she took on the role of Rey in 2015’s blockbuster Star Wars sequel trilogy entry The Force Awakens. Recently it was revealed that Ridley’s Rey will return in a new Star Wars franchise film entitled New Jedi Order, set fifteen years after The Rise of Skywalker.

The latter expanded on Smith's lore and introduced a brand-new sidekick for Peacemaker, Eagly, a bald eagle. Despite not having the most creative name, Eagly was presented as Christopher's loyal assistant who could aid the hero in taking down resilient baddies. Peacemaker's bald eagle friend even made the jump to comics in 2022's Strange Love Adventures, which officially canonized the bird in the DC Universe.

For a man who has, for the last 30 years or so, found his life defined largely by the fact that his body moves in unwanted and uncontrollable ways, I get the feeling that the last thing Michael J. Fox is actually wants is to be still.

Davis Guggenheim’s documentary biography is formed around a series of interviews with Fox, footage of his day to day life, and narration taken (as is much of the film’s structure) from his first autobiography, Lucky Man. Still strikes me as being about a man who has always wanted to control the way he and his life move. He played sports as a kid, he talks about how he relied on the mobility of his face and his body in order to do his work as an actor; his ability to control those subtle movements a key part of what he he did.

Below Deck and The Traitors star Kate Chastain has given birth to her first child, a baby boy. Kate appeared in Below Deck seasons 2-7, which aired from 2014 to 2020. She later competed on the Peacock reality show The Traitors, which debuted in 2023. She was known for her sarcastic, yet charming, personality. Kate announced her pregnancy on Instagram in December 2022, stating that she was already planning so many birthday theme parties for her child.

In a preview for Peacemaker Tries Hard, he puts a disgusting take on one of his memorable lines from the film.

The preview opens with the Peacemaker, in full costume, buying cake mix and protein supplements. He gets into an argument with the cashier, who has never heard of him. May isn’t quite summer yet but it is usually time that the networks start wrapping up their newest shows and preparing for a relatively fallow summer period. Since HBO isn’t a network, it has no such business model. But May sees the winding down of some HBO blockbusters all the same.

While there are some notable new releases for HBO in May 2020, the bigger story might be the things that are ending. Westworld concludes its third season on May 3 while new series Run wraps up on May 24. Thankfully the film losses in May aren’t too bad for HBO, unless the Agent Cody Banks saga drives a lot of traffic.

The most notable TV premiere in May is I Know This Much is True, a book adaptation starring Mark Ruffalo. This is a very bleak story coming along at a bleak time in history but perhaps those two things will cancel out.

The iconic Die Hard was a movie that changed the action genre forever and inspired many imitators. It also kick-started its own franchise with five movies to date. While none of the sequels match the perfection of the first film, and at least one is downright awful, it remains an exceptional action series.

If you don’t have the patience to binge-watch an entire series of television during quarantine but still want a daily dose of entertainment, the Tribeca Film Festival will roll out one short film a day that you can stream online for free.

The daily series is charmingly titled “A Short Film a Day, Keeps Anxiety Away,” and the postponed festival will debut a new short film each day from a different filmmaker, including several making their online premieres and others that come from the festival’s alumni.

The first premiere of the series will be “Lady Hater” from writer and director Alexandra Barreto on Mar. 30. The film is a comedy short about a woman who finds herself stressed out after she picks the very wrong yoga class.
