Elaine Ko has closed a two-year overall deal with 20th Century Fox TV, the company announced today. Having worked at Modern Family as a staff writer then producer and now supervising producer, Ko will be returning to the hit comedy for a fourth year. The producer won an Episodic Comedy WGA Award earlier this year for writing Modern Family’s “Virgin Territory” show. She also shared in the show’s 2012 Best Comedy Series award from the WGA. “Elaine is a Twentieth Century Fox Television success story, starting her career as a staff writer on Do Not Disturb and Family Guy. She’s been on Modern Family from the very beginning,” said 20th Century Fox TV Chairman Dana Walden today in a statement. “Steve and Chris value her enormously, as do we. This deal keeps her on our incredibly important Modern Family, as well as allowing her to develop down the road.

Happy New Year! I hope you had fun and stayed safe. I've got a nasty bug, so I stayed home and rested with Anderson and Kathy. But snicks is at full power, and will be bringing you a liveblog of the New Year's resolutions for WilSon on Days of Our Lives.
At the time of this writing, despite passing the Senate 89-8 with a bill no one is happy with, it looks like House Republicans are willing to drive the world economy off a cliff rather than allow a vote on the bill the Senate and the White House agreed to. At this point I'm almost willing to let China repossess the country just to end this farce. Edit: They passed it, barely.
While a $2,000/year tax hike might hurt my spending, even the bigger bump that's proposed for the wealthy elite isn't likely to hamper their lifestyles. So which...

Tiff announced their last batch of titles for their primo Gala and Special Presentation events and it comes as no surprise that we’ve got ourselves several future Venice (Bad 25, Love is All You Need, Spring Breakers, Passion and The Master) and left over Cannes titles (White Elephant, On The Road, The Paperboy) set for some Special Presentation spots, but it’s the World Premieres that Tonrot have managed to lasso that have got out attention. First up in the trio of Gala screenings announced, it’s their Closing Night Film in Song for Marion which may do wonders for both the fest and the title itself — as it may be this year’s The King’s Speech type. What Maisie Knew, Arthur Newman, Greetings from Tim Buckley and after a long post-production phase Nick Cassavetes’ Yellow (see pic above) are all repping the new wave of U.S...

Can someone please get Niecy Nash a sitcom?
Seriously, the woman is being wasted. Not that it wasn't swell to have her voicing Donna's kid-ditching sister Janet on The Cleveland Show last night, but that was just a guest spot and the real-life Nash is too fabulously animated to be relegated to cartoonery. She needs to be front and center, in the flesh and on TV on a weekly basis. And preferably in something better than Do Not Disturb.
One would think after her run on Dancing with the Stars and Reno 911! that someone would have found Miss Niecy a proper vehicle by now. She's paid her dues and proven to be a fan favorite, so why ...

Maybe the owl will chase you off.
Here at Twitterwatch, we use the 140 characters of Twitter to plumb the minds and souls of our favorite celebrities. And it turns out that some of them have birds other than the little blue bird of Twitter on their minds.
The closest I'll get to cuddling up to the hunk of my high school years.
New Kid on the Block Jonathan Knight looks exhausted. And I know how he feels. This summer I had an owl move into the oak tree outside my bedroom, and he was more reliable than a rooster for a 5:30 Am wakeup call. So I wish him good luck with chasing him down, because if he’s like mine, or the one at the top of the page, maybe he should just move.
Hope you all had a great Saturday! I have an owl to chase from a tree then off to bed!

This week! A look at how gay Frasier was and how brilliant Modern Family is, a chat with United States of Tara's gay couple Michael Hitchcock and Sammy Sheik, and an exploration of bad performances in hit movies. Plus, truly unlikely gays!
Have a question about gay male entertainment? Contact me here (and be sure and include your city and state and/or country!)
Q: When it comes to positive portrayals of gay characters on TV, I've seen coming out stories, displays of affection, and lots of sweaty workout scenes, but I don't think I've ever seen the love and loyalty that is portrayed between Cam and Mitchell on Modern Family. Do you agree that the "gas station scene" – where Cam, as Fizbo the Clown, mightily defends Mitchell against a jerk – qualifies as one of the most natural, and therefore important, portrayals of gay (or straight) love we've seen on TV?...

Former "West Wing" star Jimmy Smits is returning to NBC for a drama pilot about a different branch of government, and Keri Russell may be coming back to television, thanks to some of the "Arrested Development" crew.
The day's other pilot casting news includes additions to The CW's "Nikita," Judy Greer joining Fox's "Tax Man," Jerry O'Connell doing his second pilot this season and Jason Biggs seeking "True Love" at CBS.
Smits will star in an untitled legal drama from writer John Eisendrath ("Alias," "My Own Worst Enemy") as a Supreme Court justice who makes the unusual move of leaving the bench to return to private practice, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The multiple Emmy nominee (and one-time winner, for "L.A. Law") last starred in the third season of "Dexter"; his TV credits also include "NYPD Blue" and "Cane."
Russell hasn't done regular TV series work since "Felicity" ended in 2002, but that could change soon.

We just discovered that everyone's favorite female comedian, Niecy Nash has just joined as one of the premiere dancer's on ABC's Dancing With The Stars.

In 2008 Nash starred in her own Fox comedy series, Do Not Disturb. She is also well-known for her recurring role on the comedy series The Bernie Mac Show. Her most recent film work includes Not Easily Broken and Walt Disney Pictures’ G-Force.

A record number of celebrities came out in 2009, making it that much easier for the next one.
Gay celebrities used to mostly follow one of two formulas for coming out:
1. Get caught in an personal situation by a tabloid, i.e. Danny Pintauro
2. Get tired of not being out and call up favorite lifestyle magazine to break the news gently to their three fans who hadn’t already succumbed to the rumors. i.e. Ellen DeGeneres, Lance Bass
But something new happened in 2009, because the path to a celebrity's closet door became as varied as it is for those of us in the real world. We had the “I was always out” or the “casual mention” coming out. Then we added the “bring the boyfriend to an event” coming out which took the nonchalant route. And perhaps then there is most interesting: the “product tie-in” which, as far as I know,...

Jesse Tyler Ferguson almost missed out on Modern Family, ABC's breakout mockumentary that is already being heralded by the Hollywood Reporter as one of the best series of the decade. Recovering from his experience on the critically savaged and quickly canceled Do Not Disturb, Ferguson told his managers that he was finished with television and moved to New York last year to headline the Broadway musical based on Elf. Fortunately for Ferguson, his managers soft-sold him Modern Family, which the actor read five times over and fell in love with. Now, Ferguson can be seen on Wednesday nights as Mitchell Pritchett, the hilariously straight-laced former figure skater who has since settled down with his flamboyant partner -- the hilarious Eric Stonestreet -- and their adopted Vietnamese daughter.
Last week, Movieline caught up with Ferguson to discuss his brush with Adam Lambert, the truth behind that Julie Bowen-Sofia Vergara...

Jerry O'Connell is in. Sendhil Ramamurthy is out.
O'Connell will co-star in the NBC dramedy pilot "Rex Is Not Your Lawyer," swapping out for "Heroes" star Sendhil Ramamurthy who was originally cast in the role, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Ramamurthy had a scheduling conflict with "Heroes," and since "Rex" was in second position, it needed to find a replacement. O'Connell recently wrapped the horror movie "Piranha 3-D." He also starred in the short-lived Fox series "Do Not Disturb" and other Freshman Flops.
In "Rex," former "Doctor Who" star David Tennant will play top Chicago litigator Rex Alexander whose panic attacks lead him to cope by coaching clients to represent themselves. O'Connell steps in as Rex's friend and fellow lawyer who happens to fall in love with Rex's fiancee (Abigail Spencer).

Just a week or so ago we told you about Heroes' Sendhil Ramamurthy being cast in the new NBC comedy Rex Is Not Your Lawyer, which stars David Tennant, Jane Curtin and Jeffrey Tambor. Now comes word that maybe Ramamurthy shouldn't give up his gig on Heroes just yet.
Jerry O'Connell has replaced Ramamurthy in the role of a lawyer who is a close friend of Tennant's (the plot of the show has Tennant as a lawyer who suddenly gets nervous and can't appear in court so he trains his clients to represent themselves - can't wait to see how they keep that plot fresh).
Of course, we should have seen this coming. I believe O'Connell has a contract with the universe that he has to appear in a new quirky sitcom every single year. In 2008 he starred in the short-lived Do Not Disturb, and in 2007 he starred in the short-lived Carpoolers.

Last fall's comedy "Do Not Disturb" seemed like it was destined for success. Set in a posh New York hotel, the show starred Jerry O'Connell as Neal Danner and Niecy Nash as Rhonda Peet, and was made by the same people who gave us "Ugly Betty," "The Office," and "The Tudors." They even had Jason Bateman direct the pilot. But after only three episodes, the network pulled the plug, making it the first cancellation of the 2008-2009 season.
This fall season has some promising shows debuting, but it also has many contenders to win the title of "First Cancellation" (we're placing our bet on NBC's nurse drama "Mercy"). While we wait to see which one will get the ax first, here are some notable efforts that failed to last one full season.

Casting like this makes me hopeful that the new iteration of Scrubs might have a chance. After all, you can't put the entire weight of the series on Cox and Turk. Dave Franco's role in Scrubs is described as charming, conservative, confidently stupid and incredibly entitled."
Now I never saw Superbad, but due to my esteemed position here at the Squad, I did get to review the awful Do Not Disturb, that featured Franco as well. In that, he was arrogant and cocky and lazy, which sounds pretty similar to what he'll be getting up to in Scrubs. More importantly, he played that role very well. I found myself wanting to slap him across the face several times. Partially because he was in such a terrible show, sure, but also because of his portrayal.
We never really got the background of that character, but his entitled whining here is...

Who: Ed O'Neill, Julie Bowen, Sofia Vergara, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet, and exec producers Steven Levitan and Jason Winer. Premise: Riotously funny single-camera comedy focusing on three very different dysfunctional families. Easily the best comedy pilot of the new fall season. (Btw, last day of press tour! I made it!) 9:11 am: The panel begins with a question about the pilot's big twist, which ABC initially asked us to keep quiet about. Apparently, the gag order has now been lifted so here it is (spoiler alert!): The three families are all related! 9:13 am: E.P. Levitan says incorporating the Office-style mockumentary element brings "some grit" to the show and makes "it not so syrupy." 9:15 am: A reporter asks Ferguson about his decision to do another comedy after being in the "real awful one on Fox." Last year we had cause to tune into ABC Family's utterly wackadoodle family dramedy The Secret Life of the American Teenager when lead teen Amy (Shailene Woodley) considered giving her unborn baby to her dad's gay co-worker Donovan (Alex Boling) and his hubby Leon (Larry Sullivan).

Okay, I'll admit that I have a hard time watching this show because the main family's last name happens to be Juergens (same spelling and everything), and I'm really not used to hearing my name spoken by the likes of Molly Ringwald, John Schneider and Bobby Bacala from The Sopranos (who plays...

Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet
We wrote a while back that actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson (The Class, Do Not Disturb) had been cast as half of a gay couple in the pilot for ABC's single-camera comedy An American Family.
Now we've learned who will be playing the hubby who will be holding his hand as the two new dads adjust to adopting a new baby.
Eric Stonestreet has been cast as Ferguson's hubby, and from what I can tell he will be playing Cameron to Ferguson's Mitchell. The bulk of their story (they're one of three families being followed by a documentary crew) is about how their life changes when they adopt a Vietnamese baby named Lily, but Cameron's apparent weight concerns and Mitchell's issues with his family are also continuing themes.
Anyone recognize Stonestreet from CSI?...

Actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson played a gay character in the late, unlamented Fox sitcom Do Not Disturb, but he will have a chance to put that dud behind him with his new role in the intriguing ABC pilot An American Family:
Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd's docu-style single-camera comedy Family, from 20th TV, revolves around three families: one comprised of a working dad, stay-at-home mom and two kids; another that includes a 60-year-old man who becomes a stepfather after marrying a Latina who is 30 years his junior; and the third, a gay couple who have just adopted a Vietnamese baby. Ferguson will play one of the gay dads.
It's a fresh idea, and with the pedigree of Levitan and Lloyd behind it (who have helped helm such classics as Frasier, The Golden Girls, and The Larry Sanders Show), it could turn out to be something special.
Of course, those...

Bonnie Sommerville has been tapped to co-star in NBC's comedy pilot "Off Duty," and Jesse Tyler Ferguson has joined ABC's comedy pilot "An American Family."
"Off Duty," from Universal Media Studios and Upright Citizens Brigade's Jason Mantzoukas, centers on a once-legendary police detective (Bradley Whitford) on his way down who complicates the life of his new partner (Romany Malco) -- a straight shooter on his way up -- both on duty and off.
Sommerville will play Malco's wife. Also cast in the pilot is Capethia Jenkins as the crusty police district chief.
Sommerville, who recently starred on ABC's "Cashmere Mafia," will next be seen in the feature "The Ugly Truth." She is repped by Icm and McKeon-Myones Management.

Get ready for two new faces in this crowd. Reno 911! is getting a sixth season and two new cast members in Ian Roberts and Joe Lo Truglio, who will play Sergeant Jack Declan and Deputy Frank Rizzo, respectively. Both Roberts and Lo Truglio will be familiar faces to Reno fans, as they’ve both appeared on the show in various roles many times in the past. Lo Truglio knows fellow cast members (and the show’s producers/creators) Robert Ben Garant, Thomas Lennon, and Kerri Kenney-Silver from their time in sketch group The State, which had a show on MTV many years ago, while Roberts is a member of the Upright Citizens Brigade, who had a show on Comedy Central of the same name. My fear is that two new cast members are coming at the loss of two old ones—specifically Niecy Nash, whose future on the show I...

For those betting on Knight Rider being the first cancellation of the new season, you lose. Despite the critical and ratings drubbing the premiere episode received this week, the honor of first to face the axe is Fox’s Do Not Disturb which is now off the schedule. While not officially canceled, all signs point to the sitcom not coming back.
An additional episode of the somewhat funnier 'Til Death will round out the schedule until further notice.

"Do Not Disturb" officially becomes the first new show that gets a cancellation this Fall. FOX have decided to axe the drama comedy starring Jerry O'Connell after only three episodes, due to poor reception from the audience.

Some sources have confirmed the cancellation to EW's Ausiello Files and said that the empty slot will be filled by "'Til Death" which will be stretched to 10 P.M. on Wednesday. Fox's much maligned new sitcom, Do Not Disturb, is checking out early, becoming the first casualty of the Fall 2008-09 season.
Jason Bateman (Arrested Development) directed the show's pilot back in the Spring when it was still being called The Inn. Though the pilot was greenlit to a series, some recasting was done for subsequent episodes. Fox opted to kick off the series with the second episode but that left viewers confused about the show's setup.
Based on the screener that had been sent to critics, most panned the series and told their readers to skip it. Most people did. Do Not Disturb debuted on September 10th to an audience of 4.8 million. The following week's episode dropped to 4.1 million viewers and last night's fell even further to 3.5 million.

It's time for the week's second elimination and... well, I'm pretty sure Lance Bass will be safe until the competition gets a little stiffer. Dave Franco has joined Fox's new comedy series "Do Not Disturb" as a regular, while Sean Maguire has been tapped as the lead in Comedy Central's new series "Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire."
Additionally, Cierra Ramirez has been added to the cast of NBC's new drama series "My Own Worst Enemy."
On "Disturb," a hotel-based comedy starring Niecy Nash and Jerry O'Connell, Franco, younger brother of James Franco, will play Gus, a roadie for a rock band who gets deserted at the hotel and taken in by the gang.
"Krod," set to premiere in first-quarter 2009, is a character-driven fantasy comedy that centers on reluctant hero Krod Mandoon (McGuire), a sensitive, clueless freedom fighter who becomes the last great hope in a medieval struggle.
Additionally, the British McGuire ("Meet the Spartans") has nabbed a guest starring role in Rob Thomas' pilot for ABC "Cupid," playing an Irish musician. McGuire, who has released three albums in the U.K., is repped by the Kohner Agency and Paul Coates.
"Enemy" centers on Henry (Christian Slater), a mild-mannered suburban dad whose alter ego, Edward, is a suave spy. Ramirez will play Henry's daughter, Ruthy, who likes to spy on people and write about their behavior in her journal.

Jason Bateman inks 20th TV deal
Hot off his pilot directing debut with "Do Not Disturb", Jason Bateman has inked a first-look deal with 20th Century Fox TV.
Under the one-year pact, Bateman will develop series projects for the studio through his F+A Prods. banner, on which he will serve as producer and director.
20th TV chairmen Dana Walden and Gary Newman were impressed by Bateman's work on "Disturb", which went on to become the only live-action comedy pilot picked up to series at Fox.
"He did an excellent job on the pilot visually, brought great energy and enthusiasm to it and, as an actor, he really understands how to talk to and motivate actors," said Newman, who also is an occasional Bateman golf partner. "Hopefully he will be a better director than golfer."
Bateman, who starred on the 20th TV-produced "Arrested Development", kept the tongue -and-cheek tone in his remarks about the pact.
"Dana and Gary have always made me feel so welcome in their house, and getting my own room now is an exciting start for F+A Prods.," he said, referring to the office space his company will receive as part of the deal.
