Asian science fiction has been dominated for many years by Japanese animation, which has provided countless masterpieces to the genre. But in the past 25 years or so, a new batch of live-action films have given the genre new momentum by providing more diversity in terms of format, national origins and thematic scope. While Japan is still making great science fiction that feels fresh and innovative, other countries, most notably South Korea and China, have begun taking the genre more seriously than in the past. Leading filmmakers now use sci-fi to tell great extrapolative stories about science and technology, the future(s) of human society, or more allegorically to deal with mental illness or the precariousness of the adult world.
Science fiction is a notoriously difficult genre to define, but the list below takes a look at films that try to break free of the traditional Japanese formats and subgenres – beyond...

Hereditary directorAri Aster is known for his darkly humorous and disturbing films, while Joker: Folie à Deux's Joaquin Phoenix is a master of offbeat, eccentric roles. So it's no surprise that the two are teaming up for Aster's upcoming feature Eddington— which has Phoenix decked out in classic Western wear for an early, first-look photo.
Despite aiming for a release date sometime this summer, the black comedy and contemporary Western is already well on its way to becoming a hot topic online. Yesterday, World of Reelrevealed an initial still from the film, showing a thoroughly unrecognizable Joaquin Phoenix in a white cowboy hat and matching jacket, accompanied by horn-rimmed glasses and scraggly facial hair. This early sneak-peak could be an indication of additional promotional materials in the coming days, especially with Eddington's expected debut at the Cannes Festival in May drawing closer.

The very concept of aliens plays on our collective fear of the unknown; there’s no telling what horrors await in the cosmos. While there are plenty of horror movies that explore that horror by sending humans into space, alien invasion horror movies induce paranoia, tension, and fear by bringing extraterrestrials earthbound to invade in various unsettling ways.
It’s home invasion horror on a massive scale, with humanity often facing apocalyptic doom against the threat of intelligent life from beyond our galaxy.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to alien invasion horror movies that unsettle for the eerie, inhuman invaders and their even creepier means of assimilation.

Though he recently shot Bugonia and has long been attached to adapt perpetual subway read My Year of Rest and Relaxation, Yorgos Lanthimos has kept at least one other project deep in the background: from trusted sources we’ve confirmed he’ll write and direct Fatale, an adaptation of Jean-Patrick Manchette’s short and severe assassin thriller with James Schamus aboard as producer.
Fatale is no small property, and those who’ve had the fortune of reading Manchette’s novel can imagine how and why its design so appeals to Lanthimos. It opens on Aimée, an assassin introduced handily dispatching armed hunters and deliriously, near-orgasmically showering in the money awarded for such while traveling to a port town where she engineers, Red Harvest-style, resentments among its ruling class, culminating in a savage showdown. Social satire, unflinching violence, sexual mania––all familiar tenets of Lanthimos’ cinema, with a role one needn...

A Batgirl actress joins the cast of Bugonia, Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos' next movie, reuniting with the director seven years after their first film. The two-time Oscar-winning actress, Stone, and five-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker, Lanthimos, have collaborated four times on The Favourite, the short film Bleat, Poor Things, and Kinds of Kindness. Their next project, based on the 2003 South Korean sci-fi comedy Save the Green Planet!, also stars Jesse Plemons, reuniting with Stone and Lanthimos after Kinds of Kindness.
Now, another actor has joined Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos' next movie. Alicia Silverstone, who played Batgirl in 1997's Batman & Robin, has joined the cast of Bugonia, according to Variety, marking a reunion with Lanthimos after starring in his 2017 film, The Killing of a Sacred Deer. Yorgos Lanthimos has added Alicia Silverstone to the star-studded cast of “Bugonia,” his upcoming sci-fi conspiracy movie led by Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons.
Best known for her iconic role as Cher in “Clueless” (which she reprised last year during the Super Bowl), Silverstone memorably appeared in Lanthimos’ 2017 psychological thriller “The Killing of a Sacred Deer.”
The Oscar-nominated filmmaker’s latest movie follows two conspiracy-obsessed young men who kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth. The script is from Emmy winner Will Tracy, based on the 2003 South Korean comedy “Save the Green Planet.” Details of Silverstone’s role are being kept under wraps.

Sound designer Johnnie Burn — a newly-minted Oscar winner for his acclaimed work on “The Zone of Interest” — has detailed the thorough and deeply considered process that went into recreating the sounds of Auschwitz for Jonathan Glazer’s Holocaust drama.
With the film telling the real-life story of German SS officer Rudolf Höss and his wife Hedwig, who raised their children in a farmhouse next door to the Nazi death camp, the horrifying sounds heard from across the wall provide much of the film’s chilling impact. Taking into account the historical context, Burn — speaking at the BFI London Film Festival on Thursday at an event sponsored by Variety — explained that a very “ethical approach” was taken, saying that it was “very important not to sensationalize” anything and “to be respectful” throughout the process.

Before Bong Joon-Ho’s “Parasite” swept the 2020 Academy Awards, Cj Entertainment, the South Korean production and distribution company behind the film, were not planning such a big entry into the Hollywood mainstream. In fact, prior to this success, they were trying to shop a potential English-language remake of the 2003 Korean cult favorite “Save the Green Planet!” on an indie scale similar to the original. As reported on by The Hollywood Reporter, while speaking at the 2024 Busan International Film Festival at a forum on Navigating the New Paradigm, head of Cj Enm’s film division, Jerry Ko admitted that despite trying carry on the homespun spirit of the original, attaching talent like Yorgos Lanthimos, Ari Aster, Emma Stone, and Jesse Plemons has ballooned the project, now retitled “Bugonia,” into something bigger than he ever expected.

When Cj Entertainment, the production team behind Jang Joon-hwan’s Save the Green Planet, got the idea of remaking the 2003 cult Korean sci-fi comedy, they didn’t expect it to get so big.
This was before the release of Bong Joon-ho’s multi-Oscar winner Parasite, before Korean cinema exploded worldwide and before Cj Entertainment became one of the biggest global production outfits with its 2022 acquisition of Endeavor Content (now Fifth Season).
“[Cj Enm] was sort of an unknown production company from a marginalized place then,” said Jerry Jerry Ko, head of Cj Enm’s film division, speaking at a forum on Navigating the New Paradigm at the 2024 Busan International Film Festival.
“We started out with the belief that the film’s concept was ahead of its time and that [maybe we] could make an indie movie, but as we traveled around Hollywood, we realized that there were many hidden fans of the original film.

The film, which Lanthimos has unveiled will be called Bugonia, will star Emma Stone as a CEO who is captured by conspiracy theorists, with a script adapted by Will Tracy of The Menu and Succession. A new report from Variety revealed that Bugonia, the upcoming film from Yorgos Lanthimos, has officially begun production. Fresh from their Cannes success with “Kinds of Kindness,” iconic director Yorgos Lanthimos and his totemic star Emma Stone are now busily filming “Bugonia,’ a sci-fi conspiracy movie that is a remake of South Korean film “Save the Green Planet.”
