    She swung and she missed...

Without ever having heard anything about this 2020 horror movie titled "Bloomfield" from writer and director Brianna Young, then I had the opportunity to sit down and watch it.

Now, I must say that when a movie is written, directed and starring one and the same person, then chances are that you will be in for a lousy movie experience. Sad to say, but the track record just has that tendency. So I wasn't really harboring much of any expectations to "Bloomfield" when I saw that this was one of those movies with the writer, director and star being the same person.

Still, giving "Bloomfield" the benefit of the doubt, I sat down to watch it. And boy was that a mistake on my part. "Bloomfield" is insanely slow paced, monotonous and actually downright pointless and boring.

I found no entertainment in the storyline simply because it took forever in the narrative to go nowhere. So yeah, there was just nothing to enjoy here. And it didn't really help much that the character gallery in the movie was about as interesting as something constructed in a kindergarten arts and crafts class.

As for "Bloomfield" being a horror movie, well that definitely depends on how abstract your definition of the word horror goes.

I am rating "Bloomfield" a generous two out of ten stars.

    Surprisingly interesting!

Not your usual movie, not a blockbuster, not a bad movie either. I'm quite impressed by the quality of the story and the acting. The aunt is really something! I'd recommend it!

Gotta counter those friends & family reviews

As I write this, there are 6 reviews posted for this flick. 5 rate it 8 or above; 1 rates it a 2. That's a pretty big gap and, having seen the movie, I can only guess that the positive reviews are less than objective.

The writer, director, and lead actress on this project is a decent enough actress, and not unpleasant to look at. I can't honestly compliment her directing and writing skills based on this effort.

The remainder of the cast ranged from hammy to amateur. The main antagonist, narrating with a comically overdone stereotype of a southern drawl, kept reminding me of Catherine O'Hara doing Moira Schitt's crow movie, but without Ms. O'Hara's wit or class.

As for the plot, the other honest reviewer here stated that "it took forever for the narrative to go nowhere," and I can't think of a better way to put it. The flick just went on and on, but never progressed. Slow and unoriginally derivative, watching paint dry is more satisfying, and about a suspenseful. Same amount of horror, too.

What is different between this movie and watching paint dry is that the latter doesn't hint at a sequel as this movie did, which was about as horrific as anything to be found here. Just say no.

Move along people; nothing to see here.

This is your slow burn horror, but worth the watch.

If you are looking for jump/scare/slasher or gore and that is how you want to review it, move on this ain't for you. Do I feel you should still watch it yes, but don't review it as one of those genre.

As Horror goes this has a slow burn, I would say it takes some time to build. This movie takes an old school horror flavor and places some new twang to it.

I will start off by saying my horror take on this movie is why I didn't give it a 10, no disrespect to the writer, director, or producer ect.. some people have a different perspective of horror. In my opinion this was more if a thriller/horror then a straight up horror film.

There are alot of pros in this film enough for me to log in and review it and enough for me to encourage you to watch.

Acting - as it goes for most for an indie type of movies the acting normallie looks like high school kids spitting out lines and trying to remember what comes next.

But not here the acting in this movie was remarkable from the accents to the delivery of the lines. The parts were played as they should have been. Clear delivery and looking the part.

Production was also well produced along with cinematography. Most if the time when you watch one of these types of movies there is low film production with an airy sound and looks like kids filming a play. This film and cinematography was high end looking and not cheap poor quality. I was very impressed.

Ok now I am sure most of you are like get to the point, well my point is I could tell you all about this movie and spoil it for you. And tell you the plot but these would all just be my opinions and most of y'all may disagree... What I can tell you Is that I have seen a lot of bad movies high end horror on Netflix and prime. And this movie as I stated early on is a slow burn there are times I even was like come on let's go but the director is building the story and I understand that. The one thing I will say is that I feel that there was more to the sorry line and parts may have been cut out due to budget but I do not know for sure, would definitely like to see this movie uncut if there is such a thing. Bottom line is you don't have to take my word for it but if you made it this far you might as well check out this movie.

The talent alone is worth the watch. I hope to see more from this producer/ director because I see real potential for future movies and also from the cast because they really are a great cast.

    • I mean they have been winning film fest so why not give it a go. Grab you some nachos and rent this movie.

    Top Notch Indie Horror

I had the pleasure of seeing this film at the Houston Horror Film Festival recently and was very impressed. The film has a great atmospheric vibe about it with Wicker Man and Messiah of Evil undertones throughout, and to a lesser extent Rosemary's Baby. While the film might be too short on gore for some genre fans, its use of supernatural, old dark house tropes, and mysterious cult scenes provide sufficient scares. In addition, the first time director, did a masterful job of transitioning from past events to present day to meld together a great engaging story. Likewise I enjoyed how the old stately house and the town itself became secondary characters in certain respects. For a low budget film there are plenty of beautiful aerial shots and locations that are engaging, which belie its limited budget.

Turning to the cast, there are standout performances from Jennifer Moriarty, Allie Perez, and director Brianna Young. The Aunt Tilda character has a southern gothic vibe about her that is very appealing and beguiling. You can almost imagine Tilda being a character in a Faulkner story or a Williams play. I am definitely looking forward to seeing what Aunt Tilda has cooked up in the teased sequel.

If I had to level any complaints about the film is that it gets a touch long and possibly could have used a bit more gore. However with that being said Bloomfield is still without a doubt top notch indie horror and a great feature film directorial debut. Lastly, the film is such a nice change of pace from typical indie horror slashers and creature features one forgets they are watching a low budget movie.

Overall I highly recommend watching Bloomfield.
