Antoine Fuqua's 2001 cop drama "Training Day" is notable for its hellish tone, gritty photography, and amazing central performance from the incomparable Denzel Washington. Indeed, "Training Day" won Washington his second acting Academy Award for playing LAPD Detective Alonzo Harris, the most horrible and corrupt cop on the force. Ethan Hawke plays Jake Hoyt, the cop assigned to learn from Alonzo on the day before his promotion. Hoyt will get a disturbing crash course in how deeply the violence and corruption of the LAPD really runs.
Although Alonzo is a terrible person, he's an appealing villain, and many viewers came to love his gnashing and displays of brazen power. Alonzo's line "King Kong ain't got nothing on me," written by David Ayer, was briefly a part of the oft-repeated pop canon. "Training Day" was Fuqua's third feature as a director (after "The Replacement Killers" and "Bait"), but it was the...

Buddy cop films involve two characters from police departments working together to solve a crime with action or comedy elements. The best buddy cop films star charismatic leads and show characters with opposing beliefs coming together by the end of the film. Rush Hour and Bad Boys sequels continue to entertain fans, while new pairings in films like Live Free or Die Hard offer fresh dynamics.
The buddy cop subgenre saw a rise in popularity during the '80s with films like 48 Hrs. and Beverly Hills Cop, and has continued to find success decades later with some of the best examples coming from the 2000s. Though the subgenre's later films earned more criticism for being too derivative of earlier works, there are still plenty of entertaining examples to be found in the decade. Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua are teaming up again for an untitled Ancient Rome epic on Netflix, following their successful collaborations. Washington will portray Hannibal, the Carthaginian general who famously attacked Rome on an elephant, in a highly anticipated film. Washington's passion project from over two decades ago is revived, as he now has the opportunity to star in the ambitious Ancient Rome epic.
Denzel Washington reteams with The Equalizer director Antoine Fuqua for a new Netflix movie about Ancient Rome. The actor and director first collaborated on 2001'sTraining Day, which won Washington his second Academy Award and his first for Best Actor in a Leading Role. The duo later reteamed for 2009's Brooklyn's Finest, 2016's The Magnificent Seven, and all three installments of The Equalizer trilogy. The third and final installment, The Equalizer 3, was released in theaters in September to critical and commercial success.

With Antoine Fuqua's The Equalizer 3 in theaters, the director has been making the press rounds, shedding light on the final entry into the series. And make no mistake, it's a most brutal one as Denzel Washington's Robert McCall continues his next masterpiece of violence. But along the way, it's come to light that Fuqua wants to direct a Batman movie.
It's no surprise, given The Equalizer is about a vigilante getting over the trauma of old and dishing out justice, albeit with a deadlier edge, to redeem themselves. To that point, rather than immerse himself in a Dark Knight film, Fuqua's style would actually lean more toward Red Hood than Batman.

The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster is not the first version of Frankenstein set in the Black community. There was Black Frankenstein, better known as Blackenstein, back in 1973 and more recently FrankenThug. The difference is while the previous two versions were exploitation films, writer/director Bomani J. Story set out to make a more serious film, one that like Mary Shelly’s novel, is out to do more than just deliver scares.
Vicaria has not had an easy life. At eight she saw her mother shot and killed. In the wake of that, Chris started working for local gang boss Kango and ended up dead. Now she watches her father Donald struggle to support her despite the growing drug habit he’s developed trying to cope with their deaths.

Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2023 don’t feature many blockbusters, but if we dig a little, I’m sure we can find some gems.
Perhaps the most promising items are on the TV side of things. Tiny Beautiful Things premieres on April 7 and stars Kathryn Hahn as “a floundering writer who becomes a revered advice columnist while her own life is falling apart.” That will be followed by comedy Am I Being Unreasonable? on April 11 and two documentaries: high school football story Algiers, America (April 19) and Tupac Shakur piece Dear Mama (April 22).
The best TV candidate this month, however, is probably Saint X on April 26. This series, told via multiple timelines, “explores and upends the girl-gone-missing genre as it explores how a young woman’s mysterious death during an idyllic Caribbean vacation creates a traumatic ripple effect that eventually pulls her surviving sister into a dangerous pursuit of the truth.

Even if you’ve signed up for every streaming service out there, it can feel monumental when a title moves from one to another. In April, Netflix mainstay “New Girl” moves to Hulu; still streaming, but not where fans are used to finding it — like rearranging the furniture in your apartment and waking up surprised every day that the couch is over there now.
But what’s important is that “New Girl” lives on, now joining Hulu’s own TV and movie library and originals from Freeform, FX, National Geographic, and more. Later in the month, Leila Gerstein’s “Saint X” — based on the novel by Alexis Schaitkin — premieres with three episodes, recounting the story of a young girl found dead during a family vacation and the sister piecing it together years later. Alycia Debnam-Carey, Josh Bonzie, West Duchovny, Jayden Elijah, Bre Francis, Kenlee Anaya Townsend, Betsy Brandt, and Michael Park star.

“Emancipation” director Antoine Fuqua wanted music that was spiritual but yet untraditional: a tall order for composer Marcelo Zarvos, doing their fifth film together.
“The bar was very high on this one,” Zarvos tells Variety about the Will Smith escape-from-slavery saga. “It’s so relevant and so momentous for the times that we’re living in; it looks back but also shines a light on our current society.”
The Brazilian-born composer – whose other films include Fuqua’s “Brooklyn’s Finest” and “The Guilty” as well as TV’s “Ray Donovan” – employed a traditional orchestra and choir but treated them in unusual and dramatically effective ways.
“There’s definitely a lot of orchestra, but with a lot of detuning, especially in the low-end brass, and it creates a real sense of unease,” Zarvos explains, finding this technique especially useful in the scenes of brutality and as Fassel (Ben Foster) is pursuing...

The last time Fred Hechinger was in Toronto, he came to see a film that left his acting on the cutting room floor. Six years later, in one of several full-circle moments, the breakout star of HBO’s “The White Lotus” and Sony/Marvel’s upcoming Spider-Man Universe entry “Kraven the Hunter” returns with the Sept. 9 Gala premiere of “Butcher’s Crossing,” his first lead role in a feature.
“It was my first time going to a festival to see something that I was a part of,” the actor recalls. “I was working behind the scenes on [the romantic drama] ‘Tramps,’ they put me in one scene and I got cut, but it was technically the first thing I’ve ever acted in.” Yet that trip ignited a bizarre series of events that helped launch his career. “To connect a lot of crazy dots, the next morning I saw the first [TIFF] screening of ‘Moonlight...

Six years since the premiere of “The Magnificent Seven” and lead star Ethan Hawke is still pushing for the five-hour cut to be released.
The #ReleasetheFuquaCut campaign can only get so far, though, as Hawke revealed he’s been begging director Antoine Fuqua for over half a decade.
“In some ways, I see all his films [as] a collective scream against authority,” Hawke told The Hollywood Reporter of his collaborations with Fuqua. “[It’s] 107 [degrees] in Louisiana and there were more studio execs than our 100-person cast. He just put his head down and made his movie. I still beg him to release the five-hour cut of that film.”
The 2016 film was a remake of the John Sturges classic inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s “Seven Samurai.” Fuqua’s updated Western starred Hawke, Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Vincent D’Onofrio, Lee Byung-hun, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Martin Sensmeier, Peter Sarsgaard, and Haley Bennett.

“HAT TRICKSâ€.

When Miller’s Crossing was released in 1990, we as an audience were still trying to determine what the Coen brothers were all about. This, their third feature film, was totally different from their previous movie, Raising Arizona (1987), which was radically different from their debut title, Blood Simple (1984). Raising Arizona was a wacky comedy. Miller’s Crossing may have had more similarities to Blood Simple, being that they are both neo-noir crime dramas with a gritty, hard edge but laced with the now-familiar but then-surprisingly unique ingredient of Coen dark humor. Still, Miller’s Crossing, being a period piece that takes place during the Prohibition years, is a more elegant, and certainly more technically accomplished, picture than Blood Simple. Sudden, brutal violence, though, remains a trait of both movies.
In an excellent supplemental interview with Joel and Ethan Coen...

If you’ve taken a break from Animal Crossing: New Horizons since the game became one of last year’s biggest hits, the August fireworks show event may just be the perfect time to get back in on the fun.
The fireworks show isn’t exactly the deepest or most rewarding limited-time event in New Horizons, but in a strange way, its limited commitment may make it that much more appealing to lapsed New Horizons players who are looking for an excuse to visit their islands again without feeling like they need to commit to the daily grind.
So if you want to check out a few fireworks (including your own custom designs), earn some prizes, and just hang out with your New Horizons neighbors again, here’s what you need to know about the ongoing event:
