With the awards season well underway and the Academy Awards quickly approaching, it is time to revisit and reconsider the greatest movie acting performances of the 21st century. Whether it's a supporting role, or a lead role, a man or a woman, a blockbuster or an understated indie film, each and every award-nominated performance has something to appreciate. Zoe Saldaña, who is currently enjoying a high-profile awards season for her performance in Emilia Pérez, will be honoured with the Derek Malcolm Award for Innovation at the 45th London Critics’ Circle Film Awards in February, 2025.

The actress is the second recipient of the award created in the memory of film critic Derek Malcolm, who died aged 91 in August 2023, after actor and filmmaker Colman Domingo who was feted at the 44th London Critics’ Circle Awards.

“I’m honored and thrilled to receive the Derek Malcolm Award for Innovation from the London Film Critics’ Circle, a group I greatly admire and respect,” said Saldaña.

“This has been a wonderful year for film with so many striking and indelible roles for women. To have had the opportunity to work in this industry for twenty-five years has been a privilege and to perform the role of Rita in Emilia Pérez has been the opportunity of a lifetime.

Brad Ingelsby is staying in business with HBO.

Variety has learned exclusively that the celebrated writer and producer has extended his overall deal with the premium cabler for a further three years. The news comes as Ingelsby is currently prepping the limited series “Task” at HBO, with that show set to debut in 2025.

Ingelsby has been based at HBO since 2021, the same year that “Mare of Easttown” debuted. Ingelsby created that limited series in addition to serving as executive producer and showrunner. The show, which followed a murder investigation in a suburb of Philadelphia, marked Ingelsby’s television writing debut.

Tom Bower, the busy character actor who portrayed Dr. Curtis Willard on The Waltons and the janitor, Marvin, who helps John McClane foil the terrorists at the airport in Die Hard 2, has died. He was 86.

Bower died last week of an unknown cause at his home in Los Angeles, his brother, Robert Bower, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Mark Ruffalo is set for a lead role in a new HBO limited series that hails from Brad Ingelsby, Variety has learned.

The untitled series is based on an original idea and is said to follow “a task force of law enforcement officers and the criminals they are trying to apprehend.” According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, casting decisions were made prior to the onset of the writers’ strike. Furthermore, production on the series does not yet have a start date.

The show marks a return to HBO for both Ingelsby and Ruffalo. Ingelsby previously created the critically-acclaimed HBO limited series “Mare of Easttown” starring Kate Winslet. The show received 16 Emmy nominations upon its release, ultimately winning four. “Mare of Easttown” was produced by wiip, which will also produce the task force series.

The Untitled Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Project takes place on the night that Gracie proved Brazilian Jiu-jitsu as the most effective fighting style, one that would ultimately become a major component of today’s UFC mixed martial arts. With its list of new releases for May 2023, Hulu is relying on an acclaimed original and a whole lotta FX.

The acclaimed original in question in The Great season 3. Premiering on May 12, this historical black comedy with continue the story of Catherine the Great (Elle Fanning) and her pal Peter III (Nicholas Hoult). The other Hulu original series of note this month is The Clearing on May 24. Based on the best-selling crime novel In the Clearing this story will follow a story inspired by the real life events behind Australian cult “The Family.”

For its other TV options in May, Hulu is turning to its cable partner FX. Class of ’09, an FBI thriller starring Kate Mara and Brian Tyree Henry, premieres on May 10. That will be followed by The Secrets of Hillsong, a docuseries investigating the controversial church on May 20.

Brad Inglesby, who wrote for the acclaimed HBO show, Mare of Easttown, had been announced as a writer of a new Apple Original drama, titled Echo Valley. The new feature has already tapped Julianne Moore and Euphoria‘s Syndey Sweeny to star as mother and daughter in the drama. The Hollywood Reporter has now learned that actor Domhnall Gleeson will be joining the cast of the film that will be produced by Ridley Scott for his company, Scott Free.

“Echo Valley centers on Kate Garrett (Moore), who is reeling from a personal tragedy and spending her days boarding and training horses at the picturesque Echo Valley Farm, in southeast Pennsylvania. Rlje Films Nabs The Psychological Thriller “Sympathy For The Devil”: "Rlje Films, a business unit of AMC Networks, has acquired the North America, UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand rights to the psychological thriller, Sympathy For The Devil from Christian Mercuri’s Capstone Global, which is handling worldwide sales for the film.

Directed by Yuval Adler, Sympathy For The Devil is the feature screenwriting debut of Luke Paradise. It stars Nicolas Cage and Joel Kinnaman. The film will be released on July 28, 2023.

Bringing the film to the AMC Networks business unit was Christian Mercuri’s Capstone Global, which is handling global sales. It’s set for release on July 28.

The film written by Luke Paradise and directed by Yuval Adler (The Operative) watches as a man is forced to drive a mysterious passenger at gunpoint, finding himself in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse where it becomes clear that not everything is at it seems.

Rlje Films, a unit of AMC Networks, has picked up the North American rights to Sympathy for the Devil, a psychological thriller staring Nicolas Cage and Joel Kinnaman.

Also included in the deal were rights to U.K., Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. The deal marks the eighth time the company is releasing a Cage movie.

Rjle has set a July 28, 2023, release date for the film, which is directed by Yuval Adler (Bethlehem, The Operative).

With a 130-minute runtime, Netflix's "The Pale Blue Eye," based on the novel by Louis Bayard, reaches a fiery climax with about half an hour left to go. Just when you think it's over and detective Augustus Landor (Christian Bale) has solved the central murder mystery, the movie keeps going, delivering a final twist ending on top of that.

Viewers are with Landor the whole film as he investigates the grisly death and organ removal of more than one cadet at the West Point military academy with the help of his new friend, Edgar Allan Poe (Harry Melling). Suspicion falls on the Marquis family, and in a histrionic scene, we see three members of that family, including Poe's love interest, Lea Marquis (Lucy Boynton), about to remove his telltale heart in a Satanic ritual.

Christian Bale is charting a new career path: producer.

After receiving his first such credit in the fall, on David O. Russell’s Amsterdam, he snagged another one on his new film, The Pale Blue Eye. But Bale is not one to sneak the credit into his contracts as some vanity gift.

“Like everybody, I’m stunned sometimes at the amount of producers you see in the credits,” Bale explained to THR at the recent premiere of the Netflix film that he produced for filmmaker and frequent collaborator Scott Cooper.

“I did it on Amsterdam and with this because I was there right from the inception. I helped to put the films together, and mostly as a creative producer, a right-hand man, sort of a consigliere,” Bale continued. “I can be there to whisper in their ear, reminding them of how we put it together, what the intent was, etc.

The Pale Blue Eye is the third film in what Bale is now calling their Ethics of Revenge trilogy, with Out of the Furnace and Hostiles being the first two entries. With revenge being a loose theme that ties all three films, this collaboration has a stronger connection that has remained consistent: Bale is a great actor, whereas Cooper continues to grow as a writer-director. The Pale Blue Eye, which is based on the novel by Louis Bayard, is meant to be a gothic whodunit by design; it can be viewed a second or third time to uncover details or clues missed during the first viewing. However, once it ends, it will hardly inspire a second viewing, much less a second thought.
