Robert Towne, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Chinatown, has died at the age of 89.

Towne died at his home on Monday, July 1st, his publicist confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.

Hailing from Los Angeles, California, Towne began his career writing in television on shows including Breaking Point, The Outer Limits, and The Man from U.N.C.L.E.. He later took on the role of a script doctor, finessing screenplays including Bonnie and Clyde and The Godfather.

Carter had also been the first Black news anchor in New England with his work at Wbz-tv in Boston from 1965 to 1968. He began his career in show business by performing on and off-Broadway, and he appeared in TV shows and movies in the 1950s. One of his first major roles was as Pvt. And then there’s Sza and Beyoncé. They released mind-blowing albums last year, but they didn’t snooze in 2023.

And speaking of snooze, here are 10 favorite songs of the year.

1. Sza, “Snooze”

“Ain’t a home when you’re not here/Hard to grow when you’re not here,” Sza sings on this modern love song currently uniting the entire world. Babies and young children are cutely singing the melody (and in harmony!). Boys and men are proudly singing the lyrics written solely by a female artist. And the aunties approve of its R&b authenticity. With some production assists from living legend Babyface and legend-in-the-making Leon Thomas, Sza’s confessional track is poignant and perfect.

Of course Sza’s Sos was the album I played the most in 2023 — but remember, it came out in December 2022 and I ranked it second on last year’s list of top albums, obviously under Beyoncé’s Renaissance.

The news was carried by Hong Kong’s public broadcaster Rthk and in a Weibo social media posting by Chow mother. She died on Monday from Lupus Erythematosus.

Chow (aka Chow Hoi Mei and Zhou Hai-mei) claimed to be of ethnic Manchu descent. Ashe was Miss Hong Kong pageant participant in 1985 and moved into entertainment as both a singer and actress.

Her early years were attached to Hong Kong’s leading broadcaster Television Broadcasts (Tvb), starring in popular series Time Before Time, Breaking Point and Looking Back in Anger.

Later she switched allegiance and joined rival broadcaster Atv staying with it until 2001, before focusing her attention more fully on new opportunities in mainland China.

The track is apex Prong, holding to the band’s tried-and-true brand of grooved-out thrash. Tommy Victor’s guitar tone is steely, cutting through the mix, and there’s a pop-punkish bounce to the chord structures and shout-along vocals. For Victor, it harkens back to the band’s 1996 album Rude Awakening.

Exclusive: Briarcliff Entertainment has acquired North American rights to The Hill, an inspirational true-life sports drama starring Dennis Quaid, scripted by Angelo Pizzo & Scott Marshall Smith and directed by Jeff Celentano. Quaid starred in one of the most successful fact-based sports films in recent memory with The Rookie, and Pizzo wrote two of the best true sports films in Rudy and Hoosiers. Celentano helmed Gunshy and Breaking Point.

Quaid plays James Hill, a traveling pastor who becomes an overbearing influence on Rickey Hill, his sandlot baseball phenom son. The pastor thinks he’s protecting the boy because of health concerns and fear of how others will treat the youth because of his physical disabilities. But Rickey is determined to overcome those setbacks to fulfill his dream of playing professional baseball and making his father proud. The cast includes Colin Ford, Joelle Carter and country star Randy Houser, with Bonnie Bedelia and Scott Glenn.
