Director Olivier Marchal’s Squad 36 is a grounded, slow-paced thriller that meditates upon the very topical issue of police corruption. While the narrative focuses on the actions of individuals who abuse the powers they have been given to serve their own selfish means, the thematic significance of Squad 36 holds the rotting system and the seedy hierarchy of power accountable for creating an environment where such corruption festers. Characterization plays a key role in storylines such as this one, and it’s decent enough in the case of Squad 36. The issue is that the lead, whose Pov guides viewers through the narrative, is way less interesting than the characters who remain off-screen most of the time and yet affect the story the most. For a movie that is over two hours long, it is surprising the film doesn’t even have a fleshed-out roster of main characters—a...

Image Source: Shout Factory When future Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow made Point Break in 1991, she had a pair of stars who were both on hot streaks: Patrick Swayze with Dirty Dancing, Road House, and Ghost; and Keanu Reeves with his two successful Bill & Ted films. Pairing them for an action movie set against the world of surfing turned out to be a brilliant move, as the movie turned out to be an enduring hit that long ago entered a second life as a cult classic. We once talked with Swayze about the film — he wasn’t shy about taking risks during his lifetime, but even he was shaken by some of the surfing scenes he filmed for the movie. Rickey Hill's true story inspired the hit Netflix movie The Hill, focusing on his journey to a baseball career despite some inaccuracies. The film portrays a strained relationship between Rickey and his father, Pastor Hill, which was exaggerated for dramatic effect. The Hollywood ending of The Hill differs from reality, with Rickey's father never actually seeing him play baseball in his minor league career.
While The Hill is based on the incredibly true story of Rickey Hill's path to a professional baseball career, there are a few parts of the film that aren't entirely accurate. Directed by Jeff Celentano and based on a screenplay by Scott Marshall Smith (Men of Honor) and Agelo Pizzo, The Hill is as much about baseball as it is about faith. Hollywood's interest in Rickey Hill's true story had been circulating for decades before Hill was finally able to link with Celentano in what...

"The Hill," starring Colin Ford and Dennis Quaid, is a popular sports film on Netflix that tells the inspiring true story of Rickey Hill's journey from a hopeful underdog to a Major League Baseball player. The movie highlights Rickey's battle with a degenerative spine disease, showcasing his determination to overcome obstacles and achieve his dream. The film leaves out an important part of the story: Rickey's championship-winning season with the Grays Harbor Loggers in the Northwest League in 1978, and his struggle to receive his well-deserved championship ring for nearly four decades.
The Hill leaves out a remarkable part of Rickey Hill's true story as a professional baseball player. Directed by Jeff Celentano, The Hill has recently become one of the most popular movies on Netflix in January 2024, starring Colin Ford as Rickey and Dennis Quiad as his father Pastor Hill. It’s hard to think of 2023 in music and not mention the success of Barbie, Karol G’s international takeover, the rise of singer-songwriter-dancer-engineer Victoria Monét and the launch of future pop star Tyla.
And then there’s Sza and Beyoncé. They released mind-blowing albums last year, but they didn’t snooze in 2023.
And speaking of snooze, here are 10 favorite songs of the year.
1. Sza, “Snooze”
“Ain’t a home when you’re not here/Hard to grow when you’re not here,” Sza sings on this modern love song currently uniting the entire world. Babies and young children are cutely singing the melody (and in harmony!). Boys and men are proudly singing the lyrics written solely by a female artist. And the aunties approve of its R&b authenticity. With some production assists from living legend Babyface and legend-in-the-making Leon Thomas, Sza’s confessional track is poignant and perfect.

Of course Sza’s Sos was the album I played the most in 2023 — but remember, it came out in December 2022 and I ranked it second on last year’s list of top albums, obviously under Beyoncé’s Renaissance.
Though Sza owned the year, several great albums showed up in 2023. Here are the projects that lived rent free in my home and in my headphones.
1. Victoria Monét, Jaguar II
It’s a beautiful thing when someone working to help others achieve their dreams steps into the limelight. With Jaguar II, that’s Victoria Monét. The songwriter behind hits for Ariana Grande and others has been releasing incredible music for years — check out 2018’s Life After Love, Pt. 2 and 2020’s Jaguar if you’re just arriving at her fan club — but she’s finally at the forefront, and her major label debut album is a masterpiece. She’s bold and bombastic on “On My Mama,...

Based on a true story, The Hill comes from director Jeff Celentano (Breaking Point), who attempts to strike a home run with this baseball tale. Creatively, the bases never feel fully loaded here and there’s never a sense that things won’t get resolved. That the film goes into overtime — literally — is another story. Despite all that, if you can have a little patience, when all is said and done, Celentano does justice to the real-life story of a celebrated baseball player, beginning with his childhood in the 1970s and moving through young adulthood where he was further confronted with his physical injuries and filial strife.
The film, which arrives from Briarcliff Entertainment, stars Dennis Quaid, Joelle Carter, country music singer and songwriter Randy Houser, Bonnie Bedelia, Scott Glen, and Jesse Berry and Colin Ford as Rickey Hill at various ages. It's your typical inspirational fare.

Prong have announced their 13th studio album, State of Emergency, arriving October 6th. Coinciding with the news, the thrash vets have dropped the single “Non-Existence.”
The track is apex Prong, holding to the band’s tried-and-true brand of grooved-out thrash. Tommy Victor’s guitar tone is steely, cutting through the mix, and there’s a pop-punkish bounce to the chord structures and shout-along vocals. For Victor, it harkens back to the band’s 1996 album Rude Awakening.
“‘Non-Existence,’ with its techno-style noise guitar that’s omnipresent on this album, is a bit like my retrospective glance at Rude Awakening,” he remarked in a press release.
Victor worked on the LP with producer Steve Evetts and sought to create a record that explored his varied taste in music while retaining the idiosyncrasies of the long-running project.
“It’s a very ‘Prong’ record,” Victor mused. “I think it’s totally genre-transcending and definitely...

With the sheer amount of excellent sports docuseries out there, fans of the genre have plenty of sports documentary shows to watch after Netflix's Quarterback. The series follows three NFL quarterbacks — Kansas City Chief's Patrick Mahomes, Minnesota Vikings' Kirk Cousins, and the Atlanta Falcons' Marcus Mariota — both on and off the field during the 2022 football season. The sports docuseries stands out because it provides a glimpse into the players' lives and families.
A love letter to the dedication and passion of pro athletes, Netflix's Quarterback would be near-impossible to replicate. However, fans of the series (and non-sports fans alike) can find similar works that shine in their own ways by capturing both the physical and mental pressure athletes are under. Instead of depicting star players as unrelatable celebrities, the best sports docuseries zero in on the humanity of pro athletes.

Quaid starred in one of the most successful fact-based sports films in recent memory with The Rookie, and Pizzo wrote two of the best true sports films in Rudy and Hoosiers. Celentano helmed Gunshy and Breaking Point.
Quaid plays James Hill, a traveling pastor who becomes an overbearing influence on Rickey Hill, his sandlot baseball phenom son. The pastor thinks he’s protecting the boy because of health concerns and fear of how others will treat the youth because of his physical disabilities. But Rickey is determined to overcome those setbacks to fulfill his dream of playing professional baseball and making his father proud. The cast includes Colin Ford, Joelle Carter and country star Randy Houser, with Bonnie Bedelia and Scott Glenn.
