The Scariest Movie You’ve Never Heard of is Now Free to Watch And It’s Hyper Bizarre
Image
I love bad movies. I don’t think they’re bad—they are very beautiful to me—but I am aware that many of my favorites were absolute flops with both critics and general audiences. I’m convinced I’m one of three people who earnestly enjoyed The Turning. There’s something profound about so-called bad cinema, especially bad cinema made with earnest intentions. A bad thing made with love will always resonate more with me than an okay or even good thing made to simply sell tickets.

Often, those bad movies have a smattering of fans, though little revisionism. I’m not going to sit here and sing the high praises of the Amanda Seyfried vehicle Gone, even if I do think it boasts one of the most chilling final acts of the century. So, it’s always fascinating to me when a certified dumpster fire is contended to...

4.1 & 4.2 Heroes Of Mandalore

Star Wars Rebels is in flux. So far, the main characters have steered clear of the plot lines we’ve seen in the saga movies, except for General Syndulla’s wonderful blink-and-you’ll miss it mention in Rogue One. We know that the fourth season will be the final season of the series, so there’s only so far these characters can go. But it’s also a time of change. Who will live and who will die by the time the season is over and The Last Jedi is out?...

The Overlook: The Last Year At Marienbad of Z-grade bad movies
In The Overlook, A.V. Club film critic Ignatiy Vishnevetsky examines the misfits, underappreciated gems, and underseen classics of film history.

“Picture a flat surface. Out of the surface, one letter rises.”

“From the alphabet?”

—After Last Season

Far beyond the merely shitty and indifferent lies the valley of the bone-deep bad—the transcendently bad, the Ed Wood bad, the “Manos” The Hands Of Fate [sic] bad, the bad that is wrongly fascinating and captivating, the bad that spawns cults. When we speak of having a taste for these Z-grade bad movies, even treasuring them, what we’re talking about are those peculiar cocktails of the cringe-inducingly sincere and the vain, the obvious and the baffling, the naïve and the lurid, the out-of-nowhere and the plodding—the tendency of truly artless and amateurish movies to do everything in extremes. Anyone can be incompetent, but what distinguishes the bad sublime is ...

Fear The Walking Dead season 3 episodes 1 & 2 review: The Eye Of The Beholder & The New Frontier
Ron Hogan Jun 5, 2017

Fear The Walking Dead returns with a two-hour season three opener. Spoilers ahead in our review...

This review contains spoilers.

3.1 Eye Of The Beholder & 3.2 The New Frontier

Fear The Walking Dead is a show that will soon be undergoing a change in leadership. Unlike the parent show, Dave Erickson (who wrote the first episode of the season) has been at the helm for the first three seasons, with this one being his final as the runner of the show. Unlike The Walking Dead, Fear has been relatively sedate on the back end, and that might be a negative thing for it. Fear The Walking Dead seems to be hitting a lot of the same beats year after year, and the beginning of this season seems no different.

Archer Season 8 Teaser Promises Dreamland And New Station
FX’s Archer has been known to reinvent itself before, especially during its later seasons. The last outing found the gang moving to Los Angeles to start their own private detective agency, and season eight finds them in a new place entirely, “Dreamland.” But that’s not the only change set to come to the show.

As seen in the trailers above and below, Archer is not only going to enter a new era — as he and the gang now find themselves in a 1920-era detective noir, with the titular character as a private investigator who searches for the man who killed Woodhouse, his partner — but a new station, as well. That’s right, season 8 will find Archer moving to FX’s sister station, Fxx, which is home to It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, You’re the Worst, Man Seeking Woman and countless Simpsons re-runs.

Archer season 8 premieres sometime this spring,...

Pretty Little Liars season 7 episode 1 review: Tick Tock, Bitches

Caroline suspects the final season of Pretty Little Liars is going to be amazing. Here's her episode 1 review...

This review contains spoilers.

7.1 Tick Tock, Bitches

We're back, bitches, and how does it feel for this to be the final time we can say that? No matter what Freeform does with its flagship franchise following season seven, this is almost certainly going to be the final hurrah for Pretty Little Liars as we know it. After last season I'd say I'm ready for that to be the case but, over the course of the next 20 episodes of the show, I hope for that to change. I want to be sad it's over.

Judging by the high level of weirdness (life-size doll, anyone?) and entertainment value present in Tick-Tock, Bitches, I'd say that could very well be the case.

We begin with a flash-forward to Emily, Spencer and Aria spending some quality time,...

After last season's cancer drama surrounding Brook Ayers, Vicki Gunvalson tells the ladies she's moved on from her ex. But the women aren't all so sure, with accusations flying during the trailer that she still loves him ... which isn't unfounded as the trailer contains footage of Gunvalson telling Ayers over the phone as much.

'The Leftovers' Season 2 Trailer Promises a New Beginning
Justin Theroux in The Leftovers (2014)
Kevin Garvey (Justin Theroux) and his family relocate from New Jersey to a small town in Texas in the new trailer and poster for Season 2 of HBO's The Leftovers, courtesy of TV Line. The first season of The Leftovers was based on Tom Perrotta's bestselling novel of the same name. In the second season, the show expands on the novel's original concept of The Rapture, continuing to explore the ways ordinary people react to inexplicable events.

More than three years ago, 2% of the world's population inexplicably vanished. 140 million people, gone in an instant. No country, no state, no city was spared - except for one small town in eastern Texas. Population: 9261. Departures: Zero. This is the setting for a tale of two families: the Garveys, whose lives were forever changed by The Departure, and have since moved to this special place, and the Murphys, a local family who seem...

Greetings From 'The Walking Dead: Season 6' Set as Daryl Plants an Unexpected Kiss on Michonne
After the previous season's finale, creator Robert Kirkman and co-star Steven Yeun appeared on a panel at the annual trade show produced by the National Association of Broadcasters, and shared some deets on what fans can expect in the upcoming 6th season. The most noteworthy item came from Kirkman who shared that Rick and Morgan's reunion (which ended the most recent season) will be "the spine of Season 6." He didn't elaborate, as expected (he can't give it all away obviously), but what he did say was enough to get fans of the series talking and excited for what may be to come. After last season's finale, when Morgan (Lennie James) and Rick (Andrew Lincoln) are reintroduced,...

Orphan Black Season 3: Tatiana Maslany Talks New Threats
The BBC America drama series Orphan Black is back for Season 3, in which the clone sisterhood (brilliantly played by Tatiana Maslany), known as Project Leda, will be forced to deal with the fact that they’re no longer alone, as they cross paths with a new group of militaristic male clones (played so chillingly by Ari Millen), known as Project Castor. More shocking twists and turns will arise, and characters will be forced to come into their own more than ever before, if they’re going to survive. During this recent interview with a handful of press outlets, actress Tatiana Maslany talked about Sarah’s relationship with Mrs. S and Paul, the state of Alison and Donnie’s marriage, Delphine and Cosima, whether Tony might return, the male clones of Project Castor, the friendship between Cosima and Felix, the threats of Season 3, a possible Beth flashback, how much she knows about before getting the scripts,...

Real World Boss Jon Murray Compares This Season to a Zombie Attack and We're All About It
The Real World (1992)
After last season's The Real World experiment—when MTV decided to employ a twist for the first time since the show's inception 29 years earlier—the reality show is throwing its seven new cast members a curve ball when season 30 heads to Chicago for The Real World: Skeletons. Except this time, instead of bringing each of the cast members' exes to live in the house for the entire season, The Real World is taking things one step further and bringing the absolute last person each roommate wants to see and having them live in the loft anywhere for a few days up to a whole week. That means exes, ex-BFFs, estranged family members and much, much more are all fair game. So why did the MTV reality show...

Grimm season 4 episode 1 review: Thanks For The Memories
Grimm season 4 picks up just where season 3 left off, with tears at a wedding...

This review contains spoilers.

4.1 Thanks For The Memories

And we’re back!

After last season’s wedding-themed cliff-hanger, Grimm season 4 kicks off with Nick having lost his powers to detect Wesen and Captain Renard fighting for his life after being shot by the rogue Hundjäger, Steward.

If you remember, there was crying in the chapel at Monroe and Rosalie’s wedding as Nick realised Adalind had tricked him into bed, Juliette was – naturally – pissed about it, and to top it off, he had lost his Wesen-detection abilities.

Admittedly, first and foremost Nick has to worry about the fact there’s a decapitated fed at his house, courtesy of Trubel, but throughout the episode he doesn’t seem to display any great deal of emotion at the fact he’s no longer a Grimm.

Similarly, Juliette accepts...

Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic in Castle (2009)
After last season’s finale shocker, the question propelling Castle’s season seven premiere is less about whether Castle’s alive and more about his location. As fans have seen in the season’s promo, things pick up right where season six left off, with Beckett discovering Castle’s car in flames. Only her fiancé is not inside.

So while fans worry about what’s happened to Castle and Beckett works to solve the mystery, we talked with Nathan Fillion about the side of Castle he misses and whether Richard Castle will still be a wedding guy once all is said and done.

Terminus Tavern to Serve The Walking Dead Burgers That Taste Like Human Flesh
After last season’s finale, fans of AMC’s The Walking Dead may have the feeling that Gareth and the residents of Terminus are cooking up something strange on their massive grill, and an upcoming edible promotion confirms nasty notions about what’s on the community’s menu. Fox has collaborated with two London food gurus to make burgers that taste like human flesh in a pop-up restaurant called Terminus Tavern.

Toybox reports that somewhere in East London on September 30th, the Terminus Tavern will set up shop and serve burgers that imitate the taste of human flesh without actually having any in its recipe, simulating the zombie-desired ingredient with a combination of pork, veal, chicken livers and bone marrow. Chefs referenced quotes from real-life cannibals to make the final recipe accurate, with murderer and free man Issei Sagawa, worldwide journalist William Seabrook, and serial killer Dorangel Vargas among the macabre subject matter experts.

The Bridge Ep. 2.01 “Yankee” a premiere overcrowded with new stories
The Bridge Season 2, Episode 1 “Yankee”

Written by Elwood Reid

Directed by Keith Gordon

Airs Wednesdays at 10pm Et on FX

Unexplained pools of blood, assassins, break-ins, and sexcapades mark the opening of The Bridge‘s second season, an uncomfortably scattered hour that only seems to prove this show still hasn’t figured out what it wants to be. A jumbled mess of familiar and new faces dealing with both new and familiar problems, “Yankee” is an hour that ignores major plot threads from last season (if only for the time being) in order to introduce a plethora of new ideas, without giving the audience much sense of direction as to what this seemingly random collection of scenes actually means. Is it intriguing? Sure, there are parts of “Yankee” that suggest this season of The Bridge could head in some interesting directions: but surrounded by so many other plots and characters,...

'Game of Thrones': Hollywood Reacts to Purple Wedding Shocker
Game of Thrones (2011)
[Warning: The following story contains spoilers about Sunday's episode of Game of Thrones, "The Lion and the Rose."] Sunday's Purple Wedding Game of Thrones episode was another not-so-happy ceremony. After last season's Red Wedding massacre, King Joffrey (Jack Gleeson) was poisoned to death at his own wedding feast. While it's not yet known who poisoned him, Peter Dinklage's Tyrion could get the blame after he was tormented by Joffrey earlier in the wedding, and he brought the cup that (presumably) contained the poison. Photos: Joffrey's 10 Most Evil Moments The shocking death left Game of Thrones fans

Game of Thrones's Season 4 Is 'Better Than Ever,' Says People's TV Critic
Game of Thrones (2011)
It might seem to stretch credibility to say Game of Thrones is back, bigger and better than ever - as Breaking Bad taught us, even giant Ozymandias at some point peaks and shrinks down to the size of two lobby pillars - but it's true. The first three episodes of season 4, premiering on HBO Sunday (9 p.m. Et/Pt), grab the wide-flung stories of this epic and assemble them into a crackling narrative. And that's new: Game has sometimes had a cobblestone bumpiness that throws this or that character into the bushes. You just had to go with the flow...

Homeland Season Three Offers a Shocking Culmination to Its Main Storyline [TV Review - ★★★]
It may have taken a couple episodes to get rolling and we did have to suffer through some of the most annoying Dana Brody story beats yet, but it was all building to this pivotal and unforgettable moment in the series by the time Homeland concluded it's third season. Throughout the past three years of watching this show I was amazed at how the writers continuously managed to keep its main storyline plausible: a war hero turns into a terrorist then turns into war hero again. After last season saw Brody blamed for the bombing of the CIA, he ends up the world's most wanted man and disappears with the aid of Carrie. He disappears so well that the character doesn't even appear until almost the mid-way mark of this season. It was a little distracting not having the most captivating character...

Parenthood, Ep. 5.08, “The Ring” sets up coming conflict, change
Parenthood, Season 5, Episode 8, “The Ring”

Written by Justin W. Lo

Directed by Lawrence Trilling

Airs Thursdays at 10pm Est on NBC

Much continues to be in flux for the Braverman clan this week, as Parenthood moves forward its central plots, to varying success. Kristina as mayor remains a rather sizeable stretch, as she demonstrates yet again that she lacks the killer instinct necessary for a career in politics. It’s looking instead like this arc exists mostly as a way to put new stresses on an already physically-tested character. Her choice this week, though, says more about just how unsuited she is to the world of politics than it does about her character. She’s willing to exploit her son’s condition for sympathy, however honest she’s being, but she’s not willing to tell voters exactly why she’s running in the first place, her Amber-inspired distaste for Little?...

‘Strike Back’ Season 4 Will be Final Season for Series
Calling all Section 20 fans. Cinemax has just revealed that Strike Back will be renewed for a fourth season on the premium cable network. Season 4 will also be the final season of Strike Back.

Although Cinemax hasn’t announced which cast members will return yet, based on the season 3 finale we can presume that Philip Winchester, Sullivan Stapleton, Michelle Lukes and Robson Green will all be returning for Strike Back‘s final hurrah.

Of course, since characters tend to die often on the Cinemax show, the real question is… Who will survive the Strike Back series finale? I’m guessing either Scott or Stonebridge will make the “big” sacrifice to close out the show. After last season’s close-out regarding Scott’s son, perhaps Stonebridge will lay down his life so that Scott can retire and be the dad he was meant to be. It would be an interesting reversal since...

Sunday Comedy Round-up: The Simpsons 25.01, Bob’s Burgers 4.01, Family Guy 12.01, American Dad! 10.01, Hello Ladies 1.01
While everyone is still reeling from Sunday’s Breaking Bad finale, here’s a roundup from the lighter, non-Meth side with “Animation Domination” over on Fox (the season premieres of The Simpsons, Bob’s Burgers, Family Guy, and American Dad!) and the comic stylings of Stephen Merchant over on HBO (the series premiere of Hello Ladies). Here are the highlights, lowlights, and “what the…?”s of the evening.

The Simpsons, Season 25, Episode 1, “Homerland”

Written by Stephanie Gillis

Directed by Bob Anderson

Airs Sundays at 8pm Est on Fox

Ringing in its 25th season (seriously, the show can rent a car now), The Simpsons begins the year with a not-quite-so-timely riff on Homeland, which celebrates its own third season premiere this week. There are a few laughs, but not as many as the writers were lunging for a la Family Guy (i.e. a flashback to Homer’s “southern accent”) and...

'Bob's Burgers' Earns Fifth-Season Renewal at Fox
There won't be much pressure on Bob's Burgers when it returns to Fox this Sunday, Sept. 29. The network announced Thursday that it's picked up the cartoon for an additional 22-episode season. "Bob's Burgers is one of those rare finds that just continues to outdo itself, creatively," said Fox Entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly. "The show has become a key member of our Sunday Animation Domination family, and we're looking forward to attracting new fans with another season." Sunday's Animation Domination lineup, which also includes The Simpsons and Family Guy, needs that third veteran. After last season's cancellation

Sneak Peek: Has Simon Cowell Finally Cracked the Code to The X Factor's Success?
Simon Cowell sits on a balcony overlooking the pool at the Beverly Hilton hotel and lights another cigarette. It's a tumultuous time for the fiery Brit, whose baby-daddy drama is dominating tabloid headlines just a month before The X Factor is set to premiere its do-or-die third season in the United States. But Cowell has rarely appeared more at ease. "I think you're really going to like it more this year," he says of his singing competition.

After last season's addition of judge Britney Spears proved to be a multimillion-dollar dud and original panelist L.A. Reid jumped ship (Demi Lovato is the only holdover from Season 2), Cowell again restructured the panel, this time focusing on experience and chemistry. Enter Kelly Rowland, a former member of Destiny's Child who worked on the U.K. version of The X Factor in 2011, and Paulina Rubio, a Latina superstar whose previous gigs include...

Man Utd Transfers: Tracking The 5 Latest Summer Rumours
We’re midway through the summer transfer window and there’s already been plenty to talk about – though regrettably from Manchester United’s point of view not a great deal with regards to the champions.

After last season’s virtual procession to the Premier League title, which United won by a margin of 11 points, you’d perhaps be forgiven for thinking the Red Devils don’t need reinforcements.

However, with Paul Scholes retiring, Ryan Giggs not all that far away either and the likes of Darren Fletcher, Nani and Anderson all facing uncertain futures, you perhaps start to see why United might need to buy in some added quality.

Then there’s the “Wayne Rooney situation”, with rumours suggesting the striker could be about to quit the club and sign for domestic rivals Chelsea in a move that go down as one of the most shocking deals in recent times.
