Production value gets the second star. And some acting is not too bad as well. But thats about it The rest is just awful. Awful dialogues, awful music. Awful clichees. Even writing about it feels awful, so I shall stop now.
Overall the 3-part film is good, but compared to other German productions I found the story, while important to recount, a bit unengaging. It's a good watch, but don't set your hopes super high. One positive thing is that it sheds light on how the Germans dealt with the nazi past right after the war.
This soap opera from Germany deals with a theme and era, both of which have been done many times over. The difference with this one is the poor quality of the acting and the childish script that supports the dialog. The scenes skip through the post war years at light speed, telling the story by using the common and well known historical highlights of the era. Unfortunately, the dots don't always connect, and with insufficient context and back story to support the narrative, the actors flounder about, using dialog that adds little to each scene. It is difficult to understand how people could actually have been paid to act in, and produce this level of drivel! There are so many better examples of TV series that have done this same story before, that this one should never have been allowed to even air! It's awful beyond description!
I like pretty much everything.
They succeed to transport us to the 40' 50' era. Good photography, with good choice of colours, and very good production. Good performance of all in main or support.
A nice plot with a great sense of human life, where people make mistakes and learn from them.
The historic part it's also good and allow the viewer to understand how Germany dealt with post WWII.

Great character development, brilliant acting, lots of surprises in the plot (which I will not give away here! :) make this TV series a pure piece of joy. I wish there was more like that in German TV these days! What I like most is, that each character has some depth, struggles, and finds its way to its "true self" - one way or the other; like mentioned, I will not give out any spoilers... ;)
