Tom Hanks' Must-Watch WW2 Movie 'Greyhound' Is a Global Streaming Hit
Image
Tom Hanks kicked off the year with a small role in Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme, but several years before he ever played Leland in the film, he teamed up with a Peaky Blinders star for a WWII movie that’s dominating global streaming charts. Hanks stars alongside Stephen Graham and Elisabeth Shue (The Boys) in Greyhound, the 2020 WWII epic following an inexperienced Navy commander who is tasked with leading his convoy against a dangerous German submarine wolf pack. Greyhound is streaming exclusively on Apple TV+, and the film is still in the top 10 in more than 50 countries around the world, including the United States. The film debuted with a strong “Certified Fresh” 78% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 76% on that audience-driven Popcornmeter, and it did not report any box office earnings.

Greyhound was released straight to streaming on Apple TV+ in 2020, a model that Hanks has expressed his discontent with openly.

Image
Love is a funny thing. Some people express it with flowers, others with grand gestures. But when you’re Mark Zuckerberg, billionaire tech mogul and Facebook co-founder, you go above and beyond with creative (and often hilarious) gifts.

Forget the conventional—for Zuckerberg, it’s all about going big or going home. Whether it’s a viral jumpsuit imitation or commissioning custom luxury cars, the man sure knows how to keep his woman…we mean, his wife, Priscilla Chan, on her toes.

From a custom Porsche minivan to a towering 7-foot sculpture, Zuckerberg is clearly not shy about showing Chan how much she means to him. But the gifts aren’t just extravagant; they’re also hilariously memorable. The couple’s recent viral moments have left everyone surprised – and laughing along the way.

John Oliver Is Traumatized by Mark Zuckerberg Cover of ‘Get Low’ With T-Pain: ‘You Are Not Ready for How Bad It Is’
Image
John Oliver has been traumatized by quite a bit in life, mostly thanks to his job, and on Sunday night’s finale of “Last Week Tonight,” the HBO host received one more good horror, courtesy of Mark Zuckerberg and T-Pain.

As always, the host kicked off his show by detailing what a “crazy” week it’s been, highlighting some of the oddest headlines since his last show. Among them was one that Oliver had to immediately preface with the promise that it was actually real.

“It is a cover of ‘Get Low,’ a song T-Pain did not originally sing, and you are not ready for how bad it is,” Oliver said.

He then played a clip of the song, which changes not a single lyric, but is more folksy and acoustic. As the clip ended, Oliver could only stare wide-eyed at the camera for a moment. But, he did compose himself.

John Oliver Tackles TikTok Ban, Jokes About Superhero Fatigue By Saying Repetitive Algorithm Is “Not Unlike Marvel Studios”
Image
In the Season 11 Last Week Tonight finale, John Oliver tackled TikTok’s ongoing litigation against the U.S. government’s attempts to ban the platform owned by Chinese company ByteDance.

Oliver kicked off the program with a rundown of the “horrendous headlines” of the week, which included Mark Zuckerberg dropping a single with artist T-Pain as the two covered “Get Low” — a project the comedian-host likened to “Kidz Bop for adults, where all the swears are intact but there’s still a deep lingering sense that music was a mistake.”

He also touched briefly on Donald Trump’s flurry of cabinet picks that have sparked backlash from both sides of the aisle, including Matt Gaetz’s nomination for attorney general: “A man who my lawyers insist I cannot call Jeffrey Epstein if he went to sh*ttier beaches.”

The majority of the last episode, however, covered the dueling interests of TikTok and the U.

T-Pain Wants People Criticizing Mark Zuckerberg’s ‘Get Low’ Cover to Log Off and Touch Grass
Image
T-Pain is standing on the frontlines to protect real lovers from bitter loners after teaming up with Mark Zuckerberg on a special acoustic cover of “Get Low.” The pair cut the Lil Jon and the Eastside Boyz record as a gift to the Meta founder’s wife in honor of their anniversary. Whether the pushback came from stripping the upbeat record down to its bare bones or in an “Eat the Rich” response to the musician teaming up with a billionaire tech mogul, T-Pain doesn’t want to hear it.

T-Pain Helps Mark Zuckerberg Turn Lil Jon’s ‘Get Low’ Into Acoustic Anniversary Gift
Image
Mark Zuckerberg generally seems to be one of the more normal modern-day tech giants or at least one that comes off as less of a cartoonish villain (that’s how truly low the bar is). He isn’t trying to co-run any governmental departments and didn’t inadvertently cause a quarter of a million people to cancel their newspaper subscriptions. Instead, at least for the moment, the Meta founder has his focus set on performing grand romantic gestures for his wife — like the acoustic cover of Lil Jon’s “Get Low...

Mark Zuckerberg Just Released an Awful Cover of “Get Low” with T-Pain
Image
Pass me some bleach for my ears because Mark Zuckerberg has just dropped a god awful cover of Lil Jon and the East Side Boyz’s classic “Get Low” with the help of T-Pain, who should be banished for participating in its recording. Listen to it below, if you dare.

Update: Proceeds from the cover are going to Save The Music, a nonprofit that supports music education by donating instruments and music technology to public schools.

To be fair, the Facebook founder does kind of have a sweet connection to the song. According to a post on Instagram, Zuckerberg decided to do an acoustic version of the early 2000s club hit as a “dating anniversary” gift for his wife, Priscilla.

“‘Get Low’ was playing when I first met Priscilla at a college party, so every year we listen to it on our dating anniversary,” Zuckerberg wrote. “This year I worked...

Architect of Lil Jon’s Viral DNC Cameo To Help Celebs Boost Social and Political Impact
Image
Atlanta rap superstar Lil Jon’s epic performance of his classic “Turn Down for What” during the Georgia roll call at the Democratic National Convention in August wouldn’t have happened without veteran social impact strategist Ashley Spillane. After seeing the “from the window to the Walz” memes about Kamala Harris’ vice-presidential pick Tim Walz (a play on Lil Jon’s 2003 hit “Get Low”) go viral, Spillane got to work. Drawing on both her pop culture and political connections, Spillane — who served as president of Rock the Vote, the nonprofit formed in 1990 to increase turnout among 18 to 24-year-old voters — was able to join forces with Lil Jon’s longtime publicist Tamar Juda as well as key members of the Harris and DNC team to create one of the political season’s buzziest moments.

Linking pop culture to civic responsibility has long been a sweet spot for Spillane, who founded her D.

Sandra Bullock Should Not Return Her Oscar But She Can’t Be Absolved of the ‘White Savior’ Narrative That Was Staring Her in the Face
Image
I never quite understood the fan craze behind Sandra Bullock until I saw the 2009 rom-com The Proposal, starring Ryan Reynolds and one of the Golden Girls. Her comedic timing was impeccable and she could sing the heck out of Get Low by Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz.

But what really solidified her case for me was The Blind Side which premiered later that year. Bullock’s star power was on the rise with her Oscar-winning role – as was my admiration for her magnetic screen presence and range as an actress. She soon became one of the few talents I have been on the lookout for ever since.

However, the 15-year-long girl crush abruptly screeched to a halt when the controversy broke about how The Blind Side wasn’t exactly a story of hope and determination and...

From the Windows to the Walz: 12 Pieces of Fan-Made Tim Walz Merch to Pick Up Now

The season premiere of Saturday Night Live in September helped to coin a new meaning to the acronym “Bde,” at least when it comes to Democratic Vice-President candidate Tim Walz. SNL guest star Jim Gaffigan played the Governor of Minnesota in a sketch, and declared that he has “Bde” — or “Big Dad Energy.”

Savvy retailers and sellers quickly hopped on the quote, with Walz-inspired “Bde” designs popping up almost overnight. Fresh off a crop of Kamala Harris merch, Walz supporters are also creating merch for the VP candidate, ranging from campaign signs to buttons.

How a Lil Jon ‘To the Walz’ Viral Fan Meme Led to the Rapper Becoming a Surprise Star of the Democratic National Convention
Image
Lil Jon’s short but galvanizing appearance at the Democratic National Convention, representing the state of Georgia during a musical roll call, may have seemed like a random delight to some viewers. In actuality, it was the culmination of a weeks-old viral meme that tied the rapper to vice presidential candidate Tim Walz… and also a bookend to a 10-year-old get-out-the-vote effort from Lil Jon.

Surprising the DNC with a surprise appearance by the hip-hop star was the brainchild of two women — political operative Ashley Spillane and Lil Jon’s longtime publicist, Tamar Juda — who approached the White House and the Kamala Harris campaign with the idea of capitalizing on the current meme at the convention. Campaign toppers responded with the idea of working Lil Jon into a state-by-state musical roll call, as the only live performer amid a playlist otherwise curated by DJ Cassidy. It turned out to be...

DNC 2024 Roll Call: The Full Song List
Image
On what was a raucous, joyous night inside the hall, the roll call at the 2024 Democratic National Convention set social media abuzz with the innovative use of a live DJ and music to introduce each state and territory.

During night two of the Chicago convention, DJ Cassidy took on the role of setting up each state and territory with short intro music, as each representative got a chance to talk up their home before declaring their delegates. The song choices ranged from expected (“Empire State of Mind” for New York, “I’m Shipping up to Boston” for Massachusetts), to some truly inspired choices (“Raise Up” by Petey Pablo for North Carolina and “The Way I Are” by Timbaland for Virginia).

Stealing the show, though, was Georgia, which flexed by having Lil Jon perform “Turn Down for What” live inside Chicago’s United Center. In his surprise performance, he rapped the...

Polish Composer Jan A.P. Kaczmarek, Oscar Winner for ‘Finding Neverland,’ Dies at 71
Image
Polish composer Jan A.P. Kaczmarek, who won a 2004 Oscar for “Finding Neverland,” died Tuesday in Krakow, the Polish Music Foundation announced. He was 71 and had suffered from Multiple System Atrophy (Msa) in recent years.

Also among Kaczmarek’s 50-plus film and television scores, mostly from the 1990s and 2000s, were “Unfaithful,” “Bliss,” “Aimee and Jaguar,” “The Visitor” and “Get Low.” He also scored the lavish four-part French-Italian miniseries of “War and Peace” in 2007.

Kaczmarek had one of the most unusual backgrounds of any film composer of his time. Born in Konin in 1953, he was educated as a lawyer. But he abandoned a planned career as a diplomat to compose music for an experimental theater company, headed by avant-garde theater director Jerzy Grotowski, in Poznan during the 1970s.

He formed his own ensemble, the Orchestra of the Eighth Day, which toured Europe in the late 1970s and early 1980s, releasing an LP,...

1D Meets ‘NSync as Liam Payne, Jc Chasez Team Up for New Song ‘Teardrops’
Image
The multi-generational boy band crossover event to end them all is here: One Direction and ‘NSync have linked up — well, kind of. Liam Payne has got a new song out today, “Teardrops,” which he co-wrote with ‘NSync’s Jc Chasez.

Fittingly, the track harkens back to that late-90s/turn-of-the-millenium sound, with a somber, twinkling guitar weeping behind booming pop production. In a statement, Payne said, “’Teardrops’ is about the vulnerability of heartbreak and the challenge of overcoming those moments. This song marks the start of a new beginning, there...

What’s Next for Lil Jon After the Super Bowl? A Meditation Album, Of Course
Image
Just a few days before he would make his inevitable appearance on Usher’s Super Bowl Lviii halftime stage, rapper-producer extraordinaire Lil Jon tells me about the self-soothing mantras that kicked his decade-long wellness journey up a notch. “My affirmations in my time of really finding meditation were ‘I am healthy, I am happy, and I am at peace,’” he says. After he emerged from a mosh pit on the football field of Las Vegas’s Allegiant Stadium – performing his hit with DJ Snake, “Turn Down for What,” as a...

Hulu New Releases: November 2023
Image
Streaming services are now trying to ration their upcoming original content due to the ongoing actors strike and the only recently-resolved writers’ strike, so we’re going to see a thinning-down of new releases across the board over the next six months at least. Hulu will be adding a lot of library TV shows and movies in November, but there are only a few new major original projects hitting the streamer this month.

Hulu’s spotlight streaming series in November is Black Cake, which is based on the bestselling book by Charmaine Wilkerson. Part family drama, part murder mystery, the show features a globetrotting story that will cover decades of events after a bereaved family find a flash drive that contains some shocking secrets about the hidden history of their late matriarch.

Also dropping on Hulu this month is the original film Quiz Lady, starring Sandra Oh, Awkwafina, Jason Schwartzman,...

Red, White & Royal Blue Review: Breezy Romance Is Faithful, But Light On Laughs
Image
The enemies-to-friends-to-lovers trope has taken #BookTok by storm, skyrocketing book sales and elevating authors like Colleen Hoover and Casey McQuiston. Red, White & Royal Blue, directed by Matthew López, follows the trend and is a serviceable adaptation with shades of Hallmark Channel, though it lacks laughs. The film focuses on the central romance between Alex and Henry, sidelining other characters, and lacks a solid sense of humor, but accurately depicts their queer relationship.

Editor's note: This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the movie being covered here wouldn't exist.

The enemies-to-friends-to-lovers trope has taken #BookTok by storm as romance novels have exploded on the platform that has elevated authors like Colleen Hoover, Madeline Miller, Olivia Blake, Casey McQuiston, and more. The trend has seen book sales skyrocket as TikTok users search for their next read.

Amazon Prime Video New Releases: May 2023
Image
With its list of new releases for May 2023, Amazon Prime Video is increasing its global reach.

The streamer’s biggest original offering this month is a German series. Hohlbeins’ – The Gryphon, based on the works of Wolfgang Holhlbein, will present a sprawling fantasy tale about three teens discovering a fantastical world called The Black Tower where “the Gryphon, a world-devouring monster, mercilessly subjugates all living creatures.”

The only other original title of note in May is Freevee comedy Primo on the 19th. Written by author and journalist Shea Serrano and produced by Michael Schur (The Good Place), this coming-of-age series will follow a teenager balancing “college aspirations, societal expectations, and a hectic home life on the south side of San Antonio.”

And that’s pretty much it for Amazon Originals this month! Thankfully, there is a huge influx of library content to keep Prime Video subscribers entertained. May 4 sees the...

Quavo Delivers Delirious ‘Nonsense Karaoke’ Version of Lil Jon’s ‘Get Low’ on ‘That’s My Jam’

If you’ve ever wanted to know what an outrageously sanitized, slightly surreal version of Lil Jon’s “Get Low” might sound like, look no further than last night’s episode of Jimmy Fallon’s variety game show, That’s My Jam.

Quavo was among the guests on Tuesday’s program and was tasked with a round of “nonsense karaoke,” spinning a giant wheel and getting a goofed up version of the 2002 smash with the East Side Boyz and Ying Yang Twins. Obviously, all the new lyrics were silly, but let’s be real,...

Hulu New Releases: June 2022
Image
Summer is about to finally, blessedly be in full swing. And to honor the occasion, Hulu is showing up big with its list of new releases for June 2022.

Hulu is bringing two major TV titles to its stream this month. The first is The Orville: New Horizons on June 2. Seth MacFarlane’s sci-fi/comedy started as a simple Star Trek parody on Fox before blossoming into its own entirely sincere space adventuring beast. Now “New Horizons” promises to be a fresh start for the series on Hulu. Next up is Only Murders in the Building season 2 on June 28. Season 1 of this Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez-starring series was a big hit. Let’s see if our favorite podcasters can pull it off once again.

Rap phenoms, football icons, and cryptocurrency connoisseurs converged Saturday night at Academy in Los Angeles for a scene that only Rolling Stone could summon. At the Hollywood nightclub, the big game took a back seat for a few hours at least, and pop culture excellence held center stage.

The party was the latest installment of Rolling Stone Live during Super Bowl Weekend, the first to be hosted in Los Angeles in nearly 30 years. This year’s event saw a headlining performance from teenage Australian heartthrob Kid Laroi coming off his first-ever No.

But for the “Drama Queens'” next episode, the trio will add one of Tree Hill’s finest to the conversation.

“Lee Norris joins us first to talk about what it was like to literally be the tentpole of basketball on our show, Marvin McFadden,” Bush tells Variety exclusively.

Pom Pom Squad’s Teen Spirit
Image
When Mia Berrin first began performing as Pom Pom Squad around 2017, audience members would approach her after shows and admit that they’d been surprised by how much they’d enjoyed themselves.

“More than once, someone came up to me and was like, ‘I expected to hate you,’” she says, laughing it off, from her Bushwick, Brooklyn apartment. “Or the other one, especially from dudes, was often ‘I thought you guys were going to be a cute girl band.’”

Instead, Berrin was playing gnarly, grunge-y punk rock while presenting herself in high-femme style,...

10 Shocking Oscar Snubs and Surprises From the Last 10 Years
Image
With Oscar voting officially underway, members of the Academy are hunkering down and catching up on all the films from this year of extended eligibility. Inarguably the hardest awards season to read in modern history, there are dozens of interpretations of how the season will shake out and where AMPAS voters’ minds are within the race.

I believe there’s an “X” factor to this awards season that could potentially affect what pundits perceive the nominations could look like. In addition, there’s also a disagreement on what this “X” factor could be. Some argue: just look at the guilds, that’s the only Oscar voter overlap. Others say Academy voters are disconnected from the season, and anything is possible. The truth is, it’s somewhere in the middle — but my theory is that international voters can be the tilt for various films and performances.

There are no parties, screening...

What the SAG Nominations Mean for the Oscars as Chadwick Boseman Makes History
Image
On the heels of the nominations for the Golden Globes and the release of the BAFTA longlist, the Screen Actors Guild Awards have weighed in on the best films and performances of the season. Critics awards be damned, SAG will do what they want to do.

Overall, the nominations provided not as many jaw-droppers as we’ve seen in normal years. Chadwick Boseman made history by scoring four nominations on the film side in one year — two individual noms for his performances in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Da 5 Bloods,” and the others as part of the ensembles.

Heavily male casts dominated the ensemble categories. A24’s “Minari” has the most women represented in its cast with Yeri Han, Noel Kate Cho and supporting actress nominee Yung-Jun Youn. Amazon Studios’ “One Night in Miami” from Regina King, the only female-directed film to make the lineup, has two women among its cast,...
