"Dubs or subs?" This single three-word question has inspired countless heated debates, even more heated fights, and wounded friendships that anyone can count over the past 30 years. For some, simply listening to an anime series is enough. For others, an anime must be experienced in its native Japanese, even if it means reading subtitles through every scene. And for others still, sometimes it can go both ways depending on the anime.
The merits for both sides of this eternal argument have their fair share of pros and cons, but one particular detail that fans of subs will always point out are the inaccuracies that can become present in dubs. Some are rather innocuous, amounting to nothing more than a simple rewording of a sentence; others are a bit more noticeable. Either way, there are usually some significant clues an anime may have made some hefty changes to its original script,...

The Dragon Ball website accidentally revealed the official name of Goku’s brand-new transformation. This information was prematurely revealed via a listing for a new Daima-related action figure.
Since the debut of Super Saiyan 4 Goku (Mini) in Daima Episode 18, Dragon Ball fans have wondered if the series will keep the name or give the formerly exclusive Dragon Ball Gt form a different moniker to rationalize the Super Saiyan God transformations that will follow in Dragon Ball Super. Based on concept art for Episode 18, the anime staff at Toei Animation were internally referring to Goku’s new Daima form as Super Saiyan 4, as it’s a clear tribute to the anime-original concept in Gt. However, the name “Super Saiyan 4” has yet to be used in the series and was intentionally avoided when Goku gave his classic introduction of Super Saiyan forms to King Gomah.

Anime by definition, is largely an animated adaptation of a different medium. These mediums are often manga serializations, light novels, or famous Japanese stories and novellas. Sometimes, anime has branched out from its usual adaptations, pulling from different sources to create a wonderful adaptation of the source. Some of these adaptations are the multi-genre video games that boomed in the late '80s.
Starting in 1986 with Super Mario Brothers: Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach and continuing to this day with anime like Cyberpunk Edgerunners the concept of taking a video game's intricate and interactive plot, characters, or even the world itself and translating it into a animated medium has been going on for decades.

Akira Toriyama, the creator of the globally popular Dragon Ball franchise, also worked as a character artist for virtually every installment of Square Enix's beloved video game series, Dragon Quest. Toyotarou, the illustrator for Dragon Ball Super, recently created new artwork depicting the hero of Dragon Quest's first official series adaptation.
Featured on Dragon Ball's official website, the aforementioned artwork is the latest entry in the ongoing "Toyotarou Tries To Draw" series, in which the artist frequently highlights Toriyama's lesser-known projects. This month, Toyotarou chose to draw Abel, the titular protagonist of Studio Comet's Legend of Abel anime series. While Abel somewhat resembles Goku, the former chooses to wield a sword instead of bare fists and energy blasts. He also sports a unique feathered headpiece. Cbr readers can check it out below.

A certain meme sprung to mind when I awoke to last week’s double-whammy of old-school anime remake news. It’s that panel from a Watchmen comic where Dr. Manhattan sits pensively in isolation on the surface of Mars and is usually made to lament how time is a flat circle, a recent example of which remarked on Ghostbusters and Dune competing at the box office in three separate instances since 1984. Anime is hardly different from other mediums when it comes to rebooting or remaking older material for newer audiences, though it's arguably been slower to dig deeper for inspirations. In the last couple of years, we’ve mostly seen updates of adaptations that originate from the early 2000s or late '90s like Fruits Basket , Trigun , Shaman King , Spice and Wolf , Bartender , Tokyo Mew Mew , Forest of Piano , Orphen and so forth. A few recent exceptions include Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai...

Several shonen manga stand far above their contemporaries for constantly shattering demographic tropes and subverting staple themes found within these types of series. Some are great for how well they utilize the key elements of the demographic, capitalizing on many of the classic highlights that define shonen for what it is. Others are great for how much diversity they add in their art and writing.
Of all the different manga demographics in the world, shonen manga is easily the most recognizable. Because of how easy it is to market shonen manga and their anime adaptations, shonen manga tend to become the most popular manga in the world, and more often than not, the quality of the stories does a lot to justify the attention.
Its hard to discuss manga without shonen manga entering the discussion, and thats especially true of a few manga, in particular.

Dragon Ball fans should check out Fist of the North Star for epic battles and a strong protagonist like Son Goku. Keep the anime marathon going with Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai, a spiritual successor to Dragon Ball on Crunchyroll. Many of the best anime that Dragon Ball fans need to watch are streaming on Crunchyroll right now. It’s a very rare anime or manga fan that doesn’t at least know about Dragon Ball, even if they haven’t seen or read it all the way through. It chronicles the adventures of Son Goku and his friends, family, and rivals, as they seek greater power and fight increasingly strong opponents to protect Earth and its people.

The latest updates about Dragon Ball Daima have restored the fan base's hopes for the series.
Toei Animation's Nycc Daima announcement was met with a lukewarm response from many Dragon Ball fans bewildered by the series' unusual premise, which revolves around the Z fighters and their companions being turned into children. On Nov. 16, an alleged list of Daima staff members dropped on X (formerly Twitter), revealing a potential screenwriter, series director and character designer. Upon Toei's recent confirmation of the same staff members, Dragon Ball fans breathed a collective sigh of relief, noting that many of these creators were involved with the production of Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai. However, a new video from DBHype has ignited hopes that Daima will follow in the footsteps of the original Dragon Ball anime and manga.

Dragon Ball is, without a doubt, one of the most influential anime of all time. Its style of action and character writing can be seen as a clear influence on dozens of anime and manga, with One Piece and Naruto being particularly transparent about how much Dragon Ball influenced them, and even Western creators like the staff behind Steven Universe have openly talked about how much Dragon Ball inspired them.
Dragon Ball’s influence on pop culture can’t be understated, and there are some anime that have done the best job of following its legacy. Some do so by taking clear influence from Dragon Ball’s art style and putting their own spin on it, while others do so by having their own take on Dragon Ball’s style of writing, whether it’s the character writing or the penchant for stylistic, over-the-top combat. Whatever the case, these anime...

If you’re a fan of true crime documentaries or early millennium classic cartoons then boy does Hulu’s list of new releases have some great news for you!
Hulu continues its implicit understanding that streaming services are basically true crime distribution machines this month with a trio of intriguing titles. While it’s not necessarily true crime per se, The Ashley Madison Affair about the notorious dating platform premieres on July 7. That will be followed by Betrayal: The Perfect Husband on July 11, which is based on a compelling podcast of the same name. The Jewel Thief arrives on July 13 to provide an account of Gerald Blanchard, one of history’s most creative criminals.
But where does the cartoon excitement comes in? Well, that’s because season 11 of Matt Groening’s beloved Futurama premieres on July 24. Fry, Leela, the Professor, and Bender will all return for a direct continuation of...

Vampires are taking a wacky bite out of summer. In Season 5 of FX and Hulu’s “What We Do In The Shadows,” Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) looks for a vampire who can give him the transformation that Nandor the Relentless has kept from him. But it may not go as planned. The beloved comedy, which takes a mockumentary look at four vampires living in Staten Island, returns on July 14.
Check out the Season 5 trailer of “What We Do In the Shadows”:
Another highly anticipated return coming to Hulu in July is the latest season of long-running animated series “Futurama.” The show’s first four seasons aired on Fox from 1999 to 2003, it was then picked up by Comedy Central for three seasons from 2008 to 2013. Now, nearly a decade later, the Mike Judge-created series will return for the first half of the 20-episode Season 8 on July 24 with the original voice cast.

Whether it's Among Us, Ace Attorney or, most recently, Genshin Impact, some of the most popular manga series created in the past few years have been adapted from video games rather than the other way around. While some of those manga are, in turn, adapted into TV show anime, others remain print-only versions that continue to amuse and entertain fans of the genre by pushing the narrative forward with rich characterizations and mythological backstories.
Some video games boast their own compelling storylines and gameplay, but the most memorable ones adapted into manga series tend to flesh out the characters and advance the plot even further.
