Devo talk new Netflix doc, banned MTV video, and 50 years of being ‘the most misunderstood band in the world’
Image
In 1981, Devo’s “Whip It” music video — a deliberately offensive and over-the-top send-up of Reagan-esque cowboy machismo, featuring singer Mark Mothersbaugh sadomasochistically whipping a stuntwoman on a rowdy dude ranch — was in high rotation on MTV. But just a year later, when the new wave band released the video for “That’s Good,” MTV, which at that point was ironically saturated with sexy videos featuring plenty of female flesh, strangely refused to play it without a re-edit.

The reason? An animated scene of a French fry being inserted into a donut’s hole was deemed too suggestive by network censors.

“You were hurting a woman [in “Whip It”], so that was Ok.

‘Devo’ Documentary Recap: Where Are The Band Members Now?
Image
The Netflix documentary, Devo, takes us down memory lane, to a period when a bunch of misfits from Akron, Ohio, sought to channel their emotions and express themselves in a manner that was entirely unprecedented. It would be wrong to say that Devo was just a music band: I felt that they were more of a performance art collective. After watching the documentary, I can totally imagine why they were one of the most misunderstood bands of all time. The band, at the beginning, consisted of Mark Mothersbaugh, Bob Mothersbaugh, Gerald, Bob Casale, and Alan Myers. That said, the band has a pretty fluid lineup where people kept getting added and removed constantly. There was a very strong reason behind why labels never really stuck with them for a long time, and they couldn’t even find an audience for the kind of art they were creating. This bunch of...

Devo also covers the Ohio band’s meteoric rise after releasing their hit song “Whip It.” The film includes includes rare archival footage and interviews with the band’s members and other principal players.

At Netflix, Documentaries Still Have a Home as Streamer Picks Up Six Features — Exclusive
Image
It’s not news that the documentary market continues to be in flux, particularly for political documentaries, with many filmmakers complaining about a lack of distribution channels. So it’s good news that Netflix has closed a hybrid licensing deal for six documentary films that played well at festivals over the past year, but were not acquired by any distributor. Rather than leave the orphans in limbo, Netflix opted to give this group of diverse titles a distribution home.

The films include Bonni Cohen and Jon Shenk’s “The White House Effect” and “In Waves and War,” Chris Smith’s “Devo,” Kimberly Reed’s “I’m Your Venus,” Matthew O. Henderson’s “A King Like Me,” and the late Sacha Jenkins’ “Sunday Best.”

This out-of-the-box Netflix deal gives the docs Netflix Original status in English-speaking territories the U.K., United States, and Canada. In territories outside the English language, they are available non-exclusively.

Emilio Estevez's The Mighty Ducks 4 Idea Will Probably Never Happen But It Sounds Pretty Great
Image
When last we saw Emilio Estevez, he was serving a hilariously tiny, get-the-f***-out-of-my-house bottle of water to his "St. Elmo's Fire" co-star Andrew McCarthy in the latter's cringy-fascinating documentary "Brats." Estevez can be a refreshingly candid interview subject, but judging from the tensed shoulders and the unblinking death stare he had fixed on McCarthy, he did not appear to be in the mood to take a stroll down Brat Pack memory road that day.

Why was Estevez so on edge? McCarthy's antsy demeanor and scattered line of questioning made it fairly plain this project should've never made it outside of his therapist's office. I would've given him the short water treatment, too. But perhaps something else was eating at Estevez.

Looking back at Estevez's 52-year acting career (stretching all the way back to his uncredited debut in Terrence Malick's 1973 masterpiece "Badlands"), he's been a pivotal part of some pop cultural touchstones.

Nicki Minaj’s Height vs. Her Heels: How She Towers Over the Competition
Image
Nicki Minaj may stand at 5 feet 2 inches (157.5 cm)—a little below the 5-foot-4-inch average for American women—but when it comes to footwear, she’s always reaching new heights. Literally. With a US shoe size 6, she proves that great things (and big attitudes) come in small packages.

Flats? Not in her world. As Minaj herself once admitted, “I’ve never worn flats in my life. I haven’t owned any since I was a kid. I suppose the only flats I have are the shoes I wear to the gym, but I put them on just before I start to work out… I like heels.”

Her love for towering footwear is so iconic that even Rihanna playfully acknowledged it, saying, “Nicki Minaj has a better booty; but I have better shoes.”

From red carpets to music videos, Minaj’s footwear choices are as bold as her bars. Whether she’s rocking sky-high stilettos,...

Himesh Patel, Elliot Page, Bill Irwin & Samantha Morton Set Voyage For Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’
Image
Christopher Nolan’s next big epic at Universal, The Odyssey, has added Himesh Patel, Elliot Page, Bill Irwin and Samantha Morton.

For Patel, Page and Irwin, it’s a reteam with the 2x Oscar-winning filmmaker. Patel starred in Nolan’s 2020 Tenet, Page in 2010’s Inception, and Irwin in 2014’s Interstellar. For 2x Oscar nominee Morton, it’s her first time working with Nolan.

The foursome join a booming ensemble that counts Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Benny Safdie and Charlize Theron.

Nolan’s mythic action epic, shot with new Imax cameras, is based on the ancient Greek poem by Homer which follows Odysseus, King of Ithaca, and his perilous journey home after the Trojan War. The classic explores themes of heroism, loyalty, cunning and the struggle against divine will. The tale includes iconic stories like Odysseus’ encounters with the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens and the witch-goddess Circe,...

Songwriter Gets A Million Bucks A Year for ‘Ridiculousness’ Theme Song
Image
The advent of streaming has made it harder than ever for musicians to make the big bucks. But there appears to be at least one way for songwriters to keep cashing them checks — compose the theme song for endlessly repeating basic-cable shows.

That’s the success formula for Devo frontman Mark Mothersbaugh, who’s made way more money from “Uncontrollable Urge,” the theme song for Rob Dyrdek’s Ridiculousness, than he ever earned from the group’s biggest hit, “Whip It.” Despite the song never getting anywhere near the Billboard Hot 100, it airs around the clock on MTV where Ridiculousness can run up to 14 hours a day. Ka-ching!

“I’ve written so many other songs for films and television shows,” Mothersbaugh told Rolling Stone about his compositions for Pee-wee’s Playhouse, Rugrats and multiple Wes Anderson films. At an earlier age, “I would’ve been shocked if you told me...

Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh Makes $1 Million Per Year from Ridiculousness Theme Song
Image
Outside of Devo, co-founder and vocalist Mark Mothersbaugh has carved out a lucrative niche for himself by scoring films and creating music for TV shows. However, it’s his work on the theme for one of the most-aired shows of all time, MTV’s Ridiculousness, that’s been the biggest earner, bringing in about $1 million per year.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Mothersbaugh spoke about the success of the reworked version of Devo’s “Uncontrollable Urge” in comparison to his other themes and his group’s best-known song, “Whip It.”

“I’ve written so many other songs for films and television shows,” Mothersbaugh said. “I would’ve been shocked [years ago] if you told me this is the one that would become this prime source of income.”

He continued, “MTV stopped playing us but we came to the other side of the circle. It’s a nice ironic twist because...

Eight Figures for ‘The Big Bang Theory’? Inside the World of TV Theme Songs
Image
In the earliest days of MTV, few songs were more inescapable than Devo’s fractured New Wave classic “Whip It.” With hardly any bands making music videos when MTV launched in 1981, the fledgling network, desperate for content, played the song nearly every hour, turning “Whip It” into one of the most recognizable hits of the Eighties and catapulting the band into ubiquitous, if unlikely, visual icons.

Today, another Devo track dominates MTV’s airwaves.

While “Whip It” is Devo’s best-known song, it’s far from lead singer and primary...

10 Best Movies Set In Texas, Ranked
Image
There's something sort of mythical about the state of Texas. It's one of the biggest states in the United States, both in terms of its geographical size and population, but it has an equally big reputation. Movies set in the state tend to be just as big, whether they're the laid-back ensemble comedies of Richard Linklater or one of the many gritty Westerns to which Texas has played host. But which among them is the best film set in Texas? Figuring that out is a pretty gargantuan task given the sheer number of truly great movies set in Texas, but I gave it my honest best.

That being said, David Byrne's wacky musical comedy "True Stories," Ivan Reitman's farcical "Twins," Brian Robbins's soapy football drama "Varsity Blues," James L. Brooks's family tragicomedy "Terms of Endearment," and David Mackenzie's hard-boiled neo-western "Hell or High Water" all make the honorable mentions list.

Heather Graham on Why She Did ‘Boogie Nights’ After Avoiding Movies With Sexual Content
Image
Heather Graham recalls stepping out of her comfort zone to take on her role in 1997’s Boogie Nights.

The actress, who plays Rollergirl in Paul Thomas Anderson’s porn-industry drama, recently said on the Inside of You With Michael Rosenbaum podcast that she initially avoided projects involving sexual content.

“I grew up in a religious family, and they were like, ‘Don’t do anything with any sexual content,'” Graham explained. “But try to be a woman in Hollywood in your early 20s, mid-20s, and then to try to get no roles with any sexual content — it’s like impossible.”

The Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me star ultimately decided to go against her family’s wishes and not limit her opportunities in Hollywood.

“I had turned down a few things where there was sexual content, and then I saw other people, having really good careers,” she recalled.

This Back To The Future Reference Is So Obscure, 99% Of Modern Viewers Won't Get It
Image
The story of the first Back to the Future movie is relatively easy to follow, with Marty McFly accidentally traveling back in time from 1985 to 1955 and almost preventing his own birth. As the franchise continued with two more movies, the Back to the Future timelines grew more elaborate, involving time travel into the future as well as the past. Understandably, for a movie series about time travel, Back to the Future references pop culture moments from the past throughout all three movies, in the form of music, objects in the background, and comments from Marty.

Many of the references in Back to the Future are still recognizable (and hilarious) today, like when Marty scares the younger version of his father, describing himself as "Darth Vader from the planet Vulcan" in a Star Wars/Star Trek mashup. However, some of the more outdated references in Back to the Future will now...

Elliot Page in Bliss (2009)
Devo - Jeremy Mathews - 19123
Elliot Page in Bliss (2009)
When Devo comes to mind, the band’s iconic visuals appear just as fast as the electronics-infused rock and roll: wedding-cake shaped “energy dome” hats, industrial yellow jumpsuits, the satirically over-the-top Americana of the Whip It video. When you mingle these visuals with the classic songs and the deeper motivation beneath the surface, a documentary about the band seems like a no-brainer.

Chris Smith’s film is very much what you might expect and hope for from a Devo documentary, while also being highly informative and entertaining. It tells the story of the band’s origins, its most iconic output and the output made as the project declined.

The band – and the art project that lead to it – formed in Ohio at Kent State University in 1970 in the midst of the Vietnam War protests and the police shooting on campus that killed four and injured nine. Starting as a project.

Ricky Stanicky Review
Image
Plot: After decades of lying about a fake friend named Ricky Stanicky, who they use as a get-out-of-jail-free card, three buddies are caught in a lie and have to produce a real version of their imaginary friend to their families. They hired an Atlantic City low-life (John Cena) to pretend to be Stanicky, but he enjoys playing the part so much that he refuses to leave town.

Review: For those who don’t know, for the last fourteen years, Ricky Stanicky was a red-hot script floating around Hollywood, with people as varied as Jim Carrey, James Franco, and Joaquin Phoenix set to play the lead role. Having placed on The Black List, the script by Jeff Bushell, Jason Decker, and David Occhino was in limbo for quite a while before Peter Farrelly and his frequent collaborators Pete Jones and Mike Cerrone took a stab at it, meaning the film now...

Devo Rock Star Mark Mothersbaugh Could've Played Doc In Back To The Future
Image
There are loads of tantalizing Hollywood casting what-ifs. Tom Selleck would've played Indiana Jones had he not been previously committed to CBS' "Magnum P.I." Pierce Brosnan was set to succeed Roger Moore as James Bond after "A View to a Kill," but NBC, realizing the star of their just-canceled "Remington Steele," was a hot commodity, resurrected the show for a fifth season (after which it was canceled again). And there's always poor Dougray Scott, who had to give up the role of Wolverine in Bryan Singer's "X-Men" when "Mission: Impossible II" went over schedule.

These were franchise- and career-altering decisions. What would Harrison Ford have done after the conclusion of the "Star Wars" original trilogy in 1983? Would Brosnan have rejuvenated the flagging Bond series, thus averting the six-year retooling period between "License to Kill" and "GoldenEye?" Could Scott have connected with audiences as emphatically as Hugh Jackman did in the role of Logan?...

Joe Strummer in 120 Minutes (1986)
Sundance Review: Devo Tells the Entertaining Journey of a Subversive, Satirical, and Bold Band
Joe Strummer in 120 Minutes (1986)
As my 13-year-old son and I browsed a Buffalo, NY, record shop on a recent Saturday morning, his eyes were drawn to two action figures dangling from the wall. Both were from the popular ReAction toy line, known for its delightfully offbeat takes on pop-culture icons as diverse as Joe Strummer, Megan Rapinoe, Jimi Hendrix, the Creature From the Black Lagoon, and late Metallica bassist Cliff Burton. The two figures my son grabbed confounded him even more than the Dee Snider hanging nearby. One of them was an intense, glasses-sporting figure brandishing a whip while wearing a red flower pot on his head. The other clutched a guitar while wearing shades and a yellow jumpsuit. “Devo,” I said happily, while starting to ponder this most unique and easily identifiable group.

What’s with the outfits? How did this band become so iconic? What did they do beyond “Whip It”? These are legitimate questions,...

‘Devo’ Review: Chris Smith’s Documentary About the Jump-Suited Robo-Rock Avatars of De-Evolution Is as Much Fun as Its Subject
Image
I will never forget the first time I saw Devo. It was October 14, 1978, and my college roommates and I were watching “Saturday Night Live.” The band, which I had never heard of (I would guess that was true of 98 percent of the people watching the show), came on in their yellow jumpsuits, stiff and mechanical, swiveling like angry androids as they performed their brutalist robo version of “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” When the song ended, one of the band members shot up his hand in what looked kind of like a Hitler salute. At this point, the punk revolution was old news, and the new wave was in full swing. I had eaten up the apocalyptic barbed anarchy of the Sex Pistols; I reveled in the Ramones, the Clash, Talking Heads, you name it. But I’m not remotely exaggerating when I say that Devo doing “Satisfaction” on...

‘Devo’ Review: New Wave Radicals Get the Smart, Freewheeling Appreciation They Deserve
Image
In one of many flavorful TV interview excerpts from the band’s prime in Devo, they identify themselves as aliens who have come down to Earth in UFOs with the aim of cultural infiltration. With their red plastic “energy dome” flowerpot helmets and utilitarian uniforms that look like kids’ home-made spacesuits, the group could almost pass for interplanetary messengers, preaching change as an urgent gospel for late 20th century America in rapid regression. As one member says: “We already felt like humans were insane, so for people to be enlightened, something had to happen.”

Anyone familiar with Devo solely through their 1980 monster hit “Whip It,” or even a handful of other heyday bangers like “Beautiful World,” “Working in the Coalmine,” “Girl U Want” or “Freedom of Choice,” will likely find Chris Smith’s propulsive documentary enlightening as well as vigorously entertaining.

At one point after the group’s classic lineup had undergone changes,...

Devo (Sundance) Review
Image
Plot: The story of new wave band Devo, who rose to fame from their smash hit “Whip It.”

Review: If all you know about the band Devo is that they were those guys in the weird hats singing “Whip It,” you need to check out this doc from Chris Smith. In addition to making the cult fave American Movie, Smith has made several notable music documentaries over the years, including the recent Netflix documentary about Wham, but he has unique subjects here.

To put it bluntly, the members of Devo are among the most unlikely rock stars of all time. The brainchild of Kent State art students Gerald Casale and Bob Lewis, along with their friend Mark Mothersbaugh, the band began as a performance art satire. In early shows, they would play droning sounds and punish their audience, with Devo short for de-evolution, which was their take on the culture.

‘Devo’ Documentary at Sundance Is Perfect Tribute to the Iconic Band
Image
There were red flowerpot hats on each of the seats. The “Energy Domes,” as they used to call them, were Devo’s headgear of choice during the early 1980s, back when the band went from extremely bizarre, unclassifiable group to extremely bizarre, slightly more classifiable (postpunk, New Wave, geek rock) group who’d somehow turn a single entitled “Whip It” into a massive hit. No one told the Sundance Film Festival audience to put them on before the premiere of Devo, Chris Smith’s documentary on the pride of Akron,...

Devo On Sundance Return, Chris Smith Directed Documentary & Next 50 Years
Image
“This documentary is just to try and get some of the information down on film somewhere, before it’ll scatters away,” admits Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh of the documentary about the band that premieres at the Sundance Film Festival tonight. “I just like the idea that this information is being collected,” the front man adds.

In a festival full of music documentaries this year on legends like Luther Vandross, Brian Eno and the star studded 1985 recording of “We Are the World,” the Chris Smith directed Devo may hit even a little bit closer to home. After all, the film represents a return to Park City for the band. Back in 1996, Devo was the off-screen closing act of sorts to that year’s Sundance Film Festival. Clad in prison stripes and their trademark Red Energy Dome hats, the “Whip It” band’s performance was even made into a movie of its...

Devo Whips Sundance Into Shape With New Doc
Image
There has only ever been one Devo — and there will likely never be another. The new wave band best known for their 1980 megahit “Whip It” was born in Akron, Ohio, in 1973, when two sets of brothers — Mark and Bob Mothersbaugh and Gerald and Bob Casale — met at Kent State University and decided to create an art collective.

The name came from the concept of “de-evolution,” a kind of reverse Darwinism that posited, tongue in cheek, that humankind was moving backwards. But then they bore witness to the infamous Kent State Massacre on May 4, 1970, in which Ohio National Guardsmen killed four unarmed student war protesters — pushing Devo into the realm of performances and protest art. Along the way, they created surrealist art videos to accompany their music, including 1976’s short film The Truth About De-Evolution, which became an underground phenomenon, drawing the attention of David Bowie and landing them a record deal at Warner.

Sundance To Whip it Good: Devo Set To Play Park City As Band Docu Debuts At Snowy Fest
Image
Devo will be coming to the Sundance Film Festival in more ways than one.

Just one day after the Chris Smith directed documentary about the New Wave bad makes its Sff debut in Park City on January 21, Devo will be taking the stage at the newly opened Marquis on the luxury ski town’s Main Street, I’ve learned.

A $50 a pop for general admission and $150 for VIP, tickets for the gig should be going on sale now. Asa Dave Grohl and Nick Cave can tell you, Sundance has long a magnet for big name bands and performers with films on their careers, so the Devo show was rumored ever since Sff’s line-up was revealed on December 6.

Coming off the Mark Mothersbaugh-led band’s 50th anniversary last year, the gig opening for Paul Oakenfold is bit of a return to an old stomping ground for the “Whip It” boys.

13 Former Child Actors Who Became Filmmakers
Image
Child actors can transition into successful filmmakers, like Ron Howard and Sarah Polley, who have directed acclaimed films across various genres. Drew Barrymore, part of a renowned acting family, has both acted in successful films and made her directorial debut with "Whip It," although it didn't perform well at the box office. Jodie Foster, known for her roles in films like "Taxi Driver" and "The Silence of the Lambs," has also had a successful directing career with films like "Little Man Tate" and "Money Monster."

While child actors can often have a reputation for going off the rails in later life, some find a great love for the world of media and end up becoming filmmakers themselves. Certain actors managed to maintain their acting careers alongside their movie-making projects, while others gave up acting altogether to pursue filmmaking full-time. Having grown up surrounded by filmmaking, it only makes sense that...

Sundance Film Festival 2024 Lineup Features Brian Eno, Devo, Lollapalooza Documentaries
Image
The Sundance Film Festival has announced its 2024 lineup, featuring 91 total projects across feature film and episodic program categories. Among the world premieres during the festival — which returns to Park City and Salt Lake City from January 18th through 28th — are documentaries about Brian Eno, Devo, and the history of Lollapalooza.

Directed by Gary Hustwit, the simply titled Eno will premiere as part of the New Frontier section. The first authorized documentary about the pioneering ambient musician features hundreds of hours of never-before-seen footage, unreleased music from Eno’s archive, and visual art.

Meanwhile, Devo was directed by Chris Smith and utilizes “a mixture of archival footage, interviews from other characters in their orbit, and a range of storytelling techniques” to tell the band’s story starting from their origins in response to the Kent State massacre through their rise to fame with the 1980 hit “Whip It.”

10 Great Movies From The Past 20 Years That Were Actually Directed By Actors
Image
Some actors, like Jon Favreau and George Clooney, have successfully transitioned into directing, earning respect from both audiences and fellow directors. While some actors-turned-directors, such as Drew Barrymore and Chris Evans, have received critical praise for their directorial debuts, they have not pursued directing as a full-time career. Halle Berry and Natalie Portman have also tried their hand at directing, with mixed reception for their debut films, but there is still potential for them to continue their directing careers in the future.

Many actors have made the jump to behind the cameras and added the title of directors to their careers, and some great movies from the past 20 years were actually directed by actors. It’s not uncommon for actors to give directing a try at some point in their careers, and many end up making a whole career shift or splitting their time between being in front of the camera and behind it.

‘Suitable Flesh’ Review: Heather Graham Is Possessed by a Lovecraftian Spirit in Giddy Homage to ‘Re-Animator’ Director Stuart Gordon
Image
When “Re-Animator” director Stuart Gordon died in 2020, he left behind a blood-soaked legacy that includes a handful of giddily exploitative horror classics and a legion of genre filmmakers who grew up in the shadow of his low-budget Lovecraft adaptations.

In that light, it would be hard to imagine a more fitting tribute to Gordon’s work than a goofy-smart and gore-happy wad of immaculate trash about an ancient Entity that inhabits the body of an undersexed psychiatrist played by Heather Graham. Lucky for us, Gordon ensured that we wouldn’t have to; based on the Lovecraft story “The Thing on the Doorstep” and written by Gordon’s longtime collaborator Dennis Paoli, “Suitable Flesh” is one of the last projects the late schlockmeister was developing before his death. And director Joe Lynch’s take on the material is every bit as loving and heretical towards Gordon’s memory as you would expect from a true devotee.

Dominic Savage at an event for Une femme heureuse (2017)
Close to You review – Elliot Page anchors well-intentioned yet patchy drama
Dominic Savage at an event for Une femme heureuse (2017)
The actor makes a convincing big screen comeback as a man visiting his family for the first time since transitioning, but effective moments are offset by clunkiness

Dominic Savage’s work tends to focus on people, usually women, facing some form of disruptive challenge to their everyday life, specific and stressful and never anything but utterly believable. He drew out Gemma Arterton’s greatest performance in 2017’s Toronto premiere The Escape as a deeply unsettled woman wanting out of her responsibilities as wife and mother. His Channel 4 anthology series I Am… has introduced a range of characters at an intersection, from a devastating Vicky McClure grappling with her partner’s emotional abuse to recent Bafta winner Kate Winslet as a mother struggling with a daughter crippled by social media addiction. His preference for often mundane naturalism, with dialogue usually improvised, has teased out grounded, unshowy performances and unusual, instinctive...

Devo Are Playing Their Final Tour Dates, Confirms Mark Mothersbaugh
Image
Devo have confirmed that their ongoing world tour will indeed mark their final run of shows together.

Speaking to the Guardian in a new interview, Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh explained the band’s decision to wrap up 50 years of touring as such: “Are you married? Imagine you had four wives and you worked together. It’s tricky being in a band.” Added Gerald Casale, “You’ve got a body of work informed by a whole manifesto and philosophy. Do you let go and move on to the next thing? You want change, otherwise you’re stale, but you don’t want to be contrived.”

Devo recently wrapped up a series of gigs in the UK and Europe. Come November, they’ll embark on a run of west coast shows that includes stops in Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, as well as an appearance at Darker Waves Festival in Huntington Beach.

Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh: Pee-wee’s Playhouse “Changed the Trajectory” of His Career
Image
Devo lead singer Mark Mothersbaugh, who created the music for Paul Reubens’ series Pee-wee’s Playhouse and the 2016 movie Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, has paid tribute to the late actor and reflected upon how collaborating with Reubens “changed the trajectory” of his career in an interview with Yahoo Music.

“He always had a good personality and a good heart,” Mothersbaugh said about his longtime friend. “It’s just shocking and sad that he’s gone.” The Devo co-founder had no idea that Reubens had been privately battling cancer, adding, “We’d even been talking about working on an animated version of Pee-wee’s Playhouse.”

Mothersbaugh and Reubens met at the comedy improv theater the Groundlings when Mothersbaugh was dating founding member Laraine Newman (who was also part of the original Saturday Night Live cast). It was there that Mothersbaugh witnessed Reubens creating his Pee-wee Herman character. They kept in touch and first collaborated...

Winning Time Season 2 Updates, Cast & Story Setup
Image
The first season of HBO's sports drama is over, setting the stage for Winning Time season 2. Based on the true story of the Los Angeles Lakers rising to dominance during the 1980s after drafting Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Winning Time was one of HBO's biggest original shows. The entirety of the first season focused on Magic Johnson's rookie season and the quest for the Lakers to win the NBA Championship. Since Winning Time is focused on a real story that spans more than a decade and was later adapted as a book by Jeff Pearlman, this period of time for the Los Angeles Lakers is quite notable.

As the first season unfolded, Winning Time showed Magic Johnson adjusting to the life of an NBA star and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar rediscovering his joy for basketball. Off the court, the Los Angeles Lakers franchise endured plenty of difficult times, such as finding a...

Foo Fighters Briefly Cover Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage” at Bonnaroo: Watch
Image
On Sunday, Foo Fighters closed out Bonnaroo with a 19-song set that featured hits, guest appearances, a tribute to their late drummer Taylor Hawkins, and some fun covers, including a snippet of Beastie Boys’ 1994 classic, “Sabotage.”

“Fuck, let’s do it — go, Nate, go,” frontman Dave Grohl said onstage in front of the crowd in Manchester, Tennessee, cuing bassist Nate Mendel to kick off the song’s opening riff. As the intro burst into the first verse, Grohl hopped in, doing his best Ad-Rock impersonation.

The band made it a few lines before Grohl pulled the plug, saying “I can’t fucking rap and I don’t know the song, though I love it.” He then told the crowd: “Next year, we’ll come back to Bonnaroo, we’ll play at the fucking ‘Wha-What Stage’ and we’ll do a whole Beastie Boys set, how about that?” Watch a video of the performance below.

Before ‘Juno,’ Elliot Page Was a Teenage Vigilante in This Revenge Thriller
Image
Elliot Page, who has just released his memoir titled Pageboy, is mostly known for his quirky and subtly off-beat performances such as in Juno and Whip It, and of course, as Kitty Pryde in the X-Men films. However, 2005's Hard Candy showcases a darker and more visceral side to the actor in one of his earliest roles. The film is a borderline chamber piece in which Page, playing 14-year-old, Hayley, stars opposite Patrick Wilson, Jeff, a sexual predator and fashion photographer. Hard Candy descends into a satisfying, sadistic, and darkly poetic tale of revenge and vigilantism. As Jeff asks at the beginning of the film, "Is this some kind of teenage joke?" to which Hayley fiercely responds with "Teenage? Yeah. Joke? No."...

Be Your Own Pet Reclaim Their Dominance in ‘Worship the Whip’ Video

Be Your Own Pet break out the bondage gear for their new single, “Worship the Whip,” a track off their newly announced comeback album, Mommy, out Aug. 25. “Mommy is the bitch in charge, the one in control,” frontwoman Jamina Pearl Abegg said in a statement. “It’s a reclamation of myself.”
