It is more reflection of a state than result of a story. Two friends. A night. And the desire. Delicate exploration of details. The touch of hands - reminding Romeo and Juliet by Zefirelli- as axis. And the result is something reminding a flavour. A beautiful film , in deep sense, reminding a haiku.
The short film doesn't really have a story; it's just about a couple of guys sharing a room. It's not known who they are, and it seems they're schoolmates. The short film only focuses on the time they spend together at bedtime, and it does so by creating a tense atmosphere. The idea is to give the impression that there's something between these guys beyond just friendship. The way they look at each other suggests they feel something, and the short film captures it poetically. There are no conversations, only a few lines of dialog, and the atmosphere is what conveys everything. For a short film without any context about who the characters are or what their story is, it manages to convey that sense of romance between these two young men. There are no kisses or declarations, but a touch of hands and an embrace are enough to convey what they feel. The short film draws considerable inspiration from the intimate moments in Brokeback Mountain. The two boys being together on a rainy nite is reminiscent of the scene where Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal have their first intimate encounter. The piano score was perfectly suited to making the moment the two characters spend together feel beautiful and romantic. The short film has a lot of potential, and it would have helped to expand it a bit. The photography and sound quality look quite professional. For an independently made short film, it's well done. If they had explained who these guys are or provided a bit more context about what led them to share such an intimate moment, it would already be one of the most outstanding short films ever made. The ending doesn't make much sense in the way it was edited, because it gives the impression that the young man on the ground is dreaming. It's hard to tell whether the way the short film ends is real or just a dream. Even so, Anochecer is a short film with a moment poetic enough to be considered a piece of visual art. My final rating for this short film is 7/10.
