Although Disney films are family-friendly adventures made with children in mind, they often include tragic elements that have become synonymous with their films. Bambi (1942), The Lion King (1994), The Fox and the Hound (1981) and Dumbo (1941), for example, show children losing their parents, while sometimes the parents have already died before the narrative even begins.
Similarly, few viewers can watch the first ten minutes of Up (2009) without crying. While these Disney movies have a penchant for tugging on the heartstrings, others contain minimal sad scenes and opt to focus on more comedic or heartwarming elements instead. Though such movies aren't devoid of the sincere themes and messages that are characteristic of Disney, they likely also won't put the audience at risk of shedding tears.

The first trailer for Lilo & Stitch was finally released earlier this month and we now have a clip (via Toonado.com) from the long-awaited movie. Successfully capturing the spirit of the animated classic it adapts, this latest preview highlights what looks to be a pitch-perfect take on Experiment 626.
Disney's live-action remakes typically divide opinions, something we've seen as recently as yesterday when Snow White hit Rotten Tomatoes as the worst-reviewed of those to date.
Stitch has remained incredibly popular since the original animated movie was released in 2002 and, thanks to a clever marketing campaign, excitement for this one is through the roof. That includes some new posters which once again insert Lilo & Stitch's title character into a variety of classic features.
Last October, we caught up with Stitch's creator and voice actor Chris Sanders about The Wild Robot and asked for his thoughts on Stitch's enduring popularity.

Today I took my daughter to see the new “Snow White” live-action reimagining film from Disney. There were some good things and then there were the bad things.
I do want to mention that the theater only had five people in it and my daughter and I were two of the five. When we left and other “Snow White” showings were happening, the parking lot was practically empty, so those theaters were likely not filled either.
From here on out there may be spoilers. If you read them it’s on you.
The Good
Rachel Zegler can sing well. She isn’t terrible at acting either, but her singing was good. My daughter wishes they had someone no so belty so it was more like the original movie, but not a deal breaker.
Some of the new songs weren’t terrible. “Good Things Grow,” “Waiting on a Wish,” and “A...

While Snow White is Disney's latest live-action remake, it appears they are already beginning to shift focus to their next one as they unveiled the first clip for Lilo & Stitch. One of two live-action adaptations of an animated film by Chris Sanders (the other being How to Train Your Dragon) coming in 2025, Lilo & Stitch is looking to be one of the biggest movies of the summer movie season. Marketing is in full swing now, as Disney released a series of fun posters that are a play on the original Lilo & Stitch's marketing where the blue alien crashed iconic Disney sequences.

“Mickey 17,” Bong Joon Ho’s wacky sci-fi satire, is shaping up to be a major money loser for Warner Bros. following its rocky box office reception.
The film, which stars Robert Pattinson as a clone who works menial jobs in a futuristic dystopia, will likely lose between $75 million to $80 million during its theatrical run, according to three sources with knowledge of the economics of movies on this scale. A source close to the film disputes those estimates, saying the true losses are “significantly less.”
After two weeks of release, “Mickey 17” has earned $35.7 million domestically and $92.2 million worldwide. The film was projected to end its theatrical run with $175 million to $180 million worldwide — including $52 million domestically and $123 million internationally. But those estimates were recently revised down to $143 million worldwide — including $46 domestically and $97 million internationally. “Mickey 17’s” breakeven point is roughly $300 million. Snow White has debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with a dismal score. The upcoming 2025 movie is a live-action remake of Disney's first feature-length animated movie, starring Rachel Zegler in the title role opposite Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. The upcoming Snow White is the latest in a long-tradition of live-action remakes of Disney properties that includes titles such as 2023's The Little Mermaid, 2019's The Lion King and Aladdin, 2017's Beauty and the Beast, and the upcoming Lilo & Stitch and Moana.
Rotten Tomatoes has now aggregated an official Tomatometer score for the live-action remake of Snow White starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot. While the score could fluctuate as more reviews are added, at the time of writing, thoughts from 51 different critics have been tabulated to give the movie a firmly Rotten 45% score with an average rating of 5.4 out of 10. Not counting sequels, this the third-worst Tomatometer score for a Disney live-action remake,...

Take a look at more footage from “Lilo & Stitch”, the animated 2022 film, adapted into a live-action feature, releasing May 23, 2025 in theaters:

“…and the genetically engineered extraterrestrial creature ‘Experiment 626’, who Lilo adopts as her ‘dog’ and renames ‘Stitch’…
“Stitch, designed to cause chaos and destruction, initially uses Lilo to avoid recapture by an ‘intergalactic federation’.

After years of delays and online vitriol, Disney is finally set to release its remake of “Snow White,” and it’s going to take a lot to keep it from becoming one of the biggest flops in the studio’s now decade-old remake series.
With a reported production budget said to be at least $250 million, “Snow White” is tracking for a domestic opening of $45-50 million and a global opening of around $100 million. For comparison, the domestic range is similar to the $45.9 million launch of Tim Burton’s 2019 remake of “Dumbo,” which went on to gross a disappointing $353 million worldwide against a $170 million budget before marketing.
That leaves “Snow White” in a situation where it will need an unexpected, multiweek comeback akin to what “Mufasa” achieved this past winter just to break even. Like “Mufasa,” it’s not going to get help from critics, who are tepid on the film...

Will “Snow White” be the fairest of them all at the box office?
Disney’s live-action remake of the 1937 animated classic is targeting $45 million to $55 million from 4,200 North American theaters in its opening weekend. Internationally, the film is estimated to collect $50 million for a global start above $100 million. Those ticket sales will easily be enough to lead the domestic box office, which is coming off the worst weekend of 2025 as Paramount’s action comedy “Novocaine” topped charts with just $8.7 million.
Based on projections, “Snow White” won’t reach the initial box office heights of prior Disney live-action remakes, including 2023’s “The Little Mermaid” ($95 million opening weekend), 2016’s “Jungle Book” ($103 million) and a trio of billion-dollar smashes, 2019’s “The Lion King” ($191 million) and “Aladdin” ($91 million), 2017’s “Beauty and the Beast” ($174 million). Instead, “Snow White” is tracking a similar start to 2019’s “Dumbo,” which took off with $45 million, only to stall out at $353 million,...

Box office success isn’t just about making money—it’s a measure of how much a movie connects with audiences. Every year, a few films achieve the coveted milestone of crossing the $1 billion mark, proving they have what it takes to dominate the industry. While not every hit film reaches this level, those that do often leave a lasting impact.
A film’s success can be measured in many ways, but let’s be real—box office numbers tell a big part of the story. If a movie rakes in massive cash, it means people are excited to watch it, and the studios are making back their big-budget investments.
While hitting $1 billion isn’t unheard of, it’s still a huge milestone. 2024 saw three major movies—Inside Out 2, Deadpool & Wolverine, and Moana 2—join the billion-dollar club. In the year 2025, several blockbuster releases are poised to follow suit.

What is it that makes Chris Sanders' animated movies distinct? For starters, there's their visual acuity. His feature debut, "Lilo & Stitch," which Sanders wrote and directed with Dean DeBlois, features warm and inviting watercolor backdrops to match the rich, earthy tones and incredible 3D flying sequences of Sanders and DeBlois' sophomore effort, "How to Train Your Dragon" (still one of DreamWorks Animation's highest achievements). Even the somewhat underappreciated "The Croods" (a film that Sanders co-helmed with Kirk DeMicco) brings its prehistoric setting to life with striking, vibrant hues.
Sanders also has a fondness for weirdos and outcasts who form surprising connections with one another, whether they're a peculiar, tempestuous girl befriending an alien miscreant or a scrawny, yammering Viking bonding with a feral dragon. In a larger sense, his films are about families (be they formed by blood or choice) and communities overcoming their differences to help each...

If Hollywood is looking to 2025 to reset the movie theater business after a tough five year stretch, it’s not off to the strongest of starts. Original films like “Novocaine,” “Black Bag” and “Mickey 17” are failing to draw sizable crowds, while sequels in once-reliable franchises such as “Captain America: Brave New World” and “Paddington in Peru” are falling drastically short of their predecessors.
Attendance is expected to pick up in spring and into the summer, as “A Minecraft Movie,” “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning,” “Jurassic World Rebirth,” “Lilo & Stitch” and other blockbuster hopefuls land in theaters. Until then, however, box office revenues are looking dire.
Over the weekend, Paramount’s “Novocaine,” an action comedy starring Jack Quaid as an unlikely hero who can’t feel pain, crumbled in its international box office debut with $1.8 million from 19 markets, though that represents just 25% of its overseas footprint. The film opened to No.

Disney as a studio has had many ups and downs in the past two years, and this has surprisingly included some of its live-action remakes of its animated classics. This is now being seen with the less-than-enthusiastic response to the upcoming remake of Snow White, which was already mired in controversy. While this film might end up being a box office disappointment, another live-action remake from the company is off to a much better start.

After a tricky road to get off the ground, the Lilo & Stitchtrailer has hit a major milestone that could prove beneficial for its box office run. The upcoming movie serves as a live-action remake of the beloved 2002 movie of the same name, centering on a young Native Hawaiian girl who unknowingly adopts an alien experiment on the run, though forms a life-changing bond with him. Hailing from Oscar nominee Dean Fleischer Camp and led by Maia Kealoha and Sydney Agudong, Disney shifted its Lilo & Stitch live-action remake from a streaming-only to a theatrical premiere, which is coming in May 2025.

Disney might be betting big on titles like The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Thunderbolts*, Zootopia 2, and Avatar: Fire and Ash this year, but it looks like one of their biggest movies might be the Lilo & Stitch live-action remake — if the trailer views are anything to go off on. Released in 2002, the original Lilo & Stitch was a commercial and critical success at a time when Walt Disney animation was struggling. It has since gained a massive following, with Stitch becoming one of Disney's most famous characters, so the news of a live-action remake wasn't shocking. Even if Disney knew the film would be a hit, it is likely they didn't expect it to generate as much excitement as the trailer suggests.

Lilo and Stitch trailer nearly breaks Disney record
Disney unveiled the Lilo and Stitch trailer on March 12, and in just 24 hours it amassed 158 million views, which was the second most for a live-action Disney film, behind only 2019's photorealistic The Lion King. It ranked as the No. 1 trend on Twitter and YouTube. Does that bode well for the film's box office when it's released on May 23? Well, The Lion King remake ended up grossing $1.66 billion worldwide.
Lilo and Stitch, based on the 2002 animated film, is about a friendship between a Hawaiian girl and a fugitive alien. It's directed by Dean Fleischer Camp and stars Sydney Elizebeth Agudong, Billy Magnussen, Tia Carrere, Hannah Waddingham, Chris Sanders, Courtney B. After several posters and teasers lampooning other Disney movies and even a memorable Super Bowl pitch invasion, the first Lilo & Stitch trailer has finally arrived (via Toonado.com).
The highly anticipated movie is a live-action reimagining of Disney's 2002 animated classic, and this sneak peek points to a remake that most definitely does the original feature justice.
While it will seemingly stick pretty close to what we saw in the original Lilo & Stitch, this doesn't look like a shot-for-shot remake and actually throws in a few new moments and some very funny gags. Disney's live-action remakes have often drawn mixed reviews but the vast majority have been box office hits and well-received by fans.
Stitch's popularity has only increased over the past two decades and now feels like the right time to release a movie featuring a character who remains one of the House of Mouse's biggest merchandise sellers.

La película, dirigida por Dean Fleischer Camp, está protagonizada por la debutante Maia Kealoha como Lilo, mientras que Chris Sanders (el director de la reciente Robot salvaje) regresa como la icónica voz de Stitch. También figuran en el reparto Sydney Agudong (On My Block) como Nani Pelekai, Zach Galifianakis (Resacón en Las Vegas) como Jumba, Billy Magnussen (Spy Kids: El Armagedón) como Pleakley, Courtney B. Take a look at more footage from “Lilo & Stitch”, the animated 2022 film, adapted into a live-action feature, releasing May 23, 2025 in theaters:
“…the original film tells the story of two individuals: an orphaned Hawaiian girl named ‘Lilo Pelekai’, who is raised by her struggling older sister, ‘Nani’, after their parents' deaths…
“They develop a close bond through the Hawaiian concept of ‘Ohana’, or extended family, causing Stitch to reconsider…

Disney, for some time now, has been on a mission to turn its classics into live-action remakes and it hasn’t exactly been smooth sailing. While they’ve tried to freshen things up with “modern” tweaks and diverse casts, the results have been hit or miss, mostly misses, without naming any names…

But things might be looking up for Disney after all! The Lilo & Stitch trailer just dropped, and fans are actually excited to see how it turns out. With surprisingly decent visuals, a Stitch that actually looks like Stitch, and an overall heartwarming vibe, this one might just break Disney’s live-action slump. Could Lilo & Stitch be the remake that finally gets it right? Fans sure are hoping so!

The history of Lilo & Stitch is so incredible that it is difficult to process how the movie ever got made in the first place. At a time of intense infighting at Disney and with little money and time to finish the movie, Christopher Sanders and Dean DeBlois delivered an animated film that, to date, remains one of the most beloved Disney movies of all time.

Even in its conception, Lilo & Stitch stands out due to its absurdly fantastic yet extraordinary storyline. It is no wonder that with the proper tools, even a far-fetched sci-fi plot with a six-limbed demonic agent of chaos can be made into one of the most heartwarming Disney movies in pop culture history.

The live-action “Lilo and Stitch” trailer was released today, and it looks so good! I was concerned about how it would look in live-action, but going by the trailer, there is nothing to worry about.
Take a look!
The casting for Lilo (Maia Kealoha), Nani (Sydney Agudong), and David (Kaipo Dudoit) is spot on. Chris Sanders, who originally voiced Stitch, is the voice of Stitch.
They are going to give Jumba (Zach Galifianakis) and Pleakley (Billy Magnussen) human disguises, which we figured they would. But we see Pleakley as CGI, too, and he looks spot on!
The CGI for this film is top-notch, and Lilo is adorable!
Oh, and Cobra Bubbles (Courtney B. Vance) is in the film. There were rumors that he would be changed, but they did not do that.
Unlike the reaction to “Snow White” the comments are mostly positive!

Disney’s Lilo & Stitch trailer shows the weird creature drinking a lava lamp, surfing, posing as a dog, and generally wreaking havoc on his new human best friend’s life. The first official trailer for Disney’s live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch hits some familiar sweet spots from the 2002 original. Stitch still makes a crash-landing with the promise of chaos, Ohana still means family, and that one guy still can’t keep his ice cream from falling to the ground. In theaters May 23, the revamped version of the classic stars Maia Kealoha as Lilo with Chris Sanders, who wrote and directed the animated film, reprising his role as the voice of Stitch.

Disney just released the trailer for its next live-action remake, Lilo and Stitch. Although there are many (this writer included) who would say it's far too recent of a film to get a remake. However, the new footage does have a few perks.
There's no denying that Stitch himself has a very healthy fanbase. Next to Mickey Mouse and Winnie the Pooh, he's probably one of Disney's most marketable characters. But will he be enough to bring in the box office bucks?
Lilo and Stitch: Fresh but familiar
Let's get the obvious out of the way, it looks great. The footage shown in the video above looks like what a live-action variant of this sci-fi classic should. In fact, the argument could be made that Disney should have made this a live-action film first. It's honestly one of the best first impressions the studio has given us in a long time.

Updated, March 12: Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch approaches, with chaos stemming from the blue creature and the young Hawaiian girl starting in theaters Memorial Day weekend.
“We have apprehended a dangerous experiment,” a commanding voice starts off the official trailer for the film. “Where is he?”
Subordinates answering to their leader in the command center of a spaceship report that “he escaped” after he found the police cruisers and “uh, took the red one.”
As Stitch cackles in the machine and enters the Earth’s atmosphere, Maia Kealoha’s Lilo spots his space ship from her home, thinking it’s a shooting star.
“I wish for a friend,” she says as the green glowing projectile hurtles toward the beaches of Hawaii, cutting to a sequence of Lilo getting pushed down during a hula lesson. “Like a best friend.”

Lilo & Stitchhas finally unveiled the official trailer for the upcoming live-action remake, and it will take audiences by surprise, as Disney has seemingly done what was thought to be impossible — create a new and fresh version of a timeless classic. Based on the 2002 film, Lilo & Stitch looks to recreate the magic of the original by honing in on what made it special without having to do a shot-for-shot remake. We're looking at you,How to Train Your Dragon, with all due respect.
Despite not being a straight-up remake of the original, a lot of the 2002 film's iconography is present in the new trailer for Lilo & Stitch (see below). Among those is the space-set opening sequence, which features Stitch escaping onto Earth from a group of aliens. The snowcone sequence is also brought back to life in live-action, although it seems the film is leaning towards reshaping iconic moments instead of reenacting them one-for-one.

When you wish upon a shooting star, you might just end up with an adorable blue extraterrestrial creature. At least, that’s what happens in the first full-length trailer for Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch” remake.
In the extended look at the live-action reboot, a lonely Hawaiian girl named Lilo is longing for a best friend. After she sees a glowing comet blast across the night sky, she makes a wish and then finds herself face-to-face with Stitch, a dog-like alien experiment whose raison d’etre is creating destruction.
Like the original 2002 animated film, “Lilo & Stitch” follows a young orphan who is being raised by her teenaged sister, Nani. Lilo develops a close bond with Stitch (née Experiment 626) through the Hawaiian concept of “ohana,” which means family — and family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten.
“He is your responsibility. Got it?” Nani says in the trailer, to which Lilo cheerfully replies,...

The trailer for the live action version of Lilo & Stitch is finally here!
The film is a reimagining of Disney’s 2002 animated classic!
Chris Sanders – the voice actor, filmmaker, and animator who originally created Stitch and co-wrote and co-directed the original movie with Dean DeBlois – is voicing Stitch again in the new movie.
Newcomer Maia Kealoha will be playing Lilo, the little girl from Hawaii who adopts Stitch.
According to an official film synopsis, Lilo & Stitch “tells a story of the bond formed between a lonely human girl named Lilo and a dog-like alien named Stitch, who was genetically engineered to be a force of destruction. With nosy social workers and pursuing aliens banging on the door, the two bond over a shared sense of family and win the day.”
Sydney Agudong will be playing Lilo’s older sister Nani while Kahiau Machado is playing David Kawena, Nani’s love interest.

Exclusive: “We’re back,” was the upbeat message delivered by Technicolor CEO Caroline Parot to thousands of global employees during an online Town Hall at the end of January.
Six weeks later, the iconic film company is in ruins and thousands are out of jobs after one of the swiftest and most painful corporate implosions in recent years. In the space of just a few days in late February, the company cratered in the U.S., UK, India and Canada, while operations in France continue amid a receivership process. One executive from a rival VFX firm described the scale and suddenness of the damage to us as a “holy shit moment for everyone”.
Technicolor had been on shaky ground for a number of years but the full-scale implosion still took many by surprise, even among senior leaders at the group. It was in stark contrast to Parot’s virtual Town...

In a big win that underscored the growing prominence of indepedent animation, Gints Zibalodis’ “Flow,” the moving dialog-free tale of a solitary cat’s journey as it learns to survive after a great flood – that was made with open-source software Blender for just $3.4 million – won the Academy Award for best animated feature. It was the first nomination and first win for Latvia; “Flow” is also nominated for best animated feature.
“I’m really moved by the warm reception our film has had, and I hope that you’ll open doors to independent animation filmmakers around the world,” Zibalodis said, accepting the award. “This is the first time a film from Latvia has ever been nominated. So it really means a lot to us and we hope to be back soon.” With a nod to the film’s themes, he concluded, “We’re all in the same boat and we must...

“How to Train Your Dragon” will screen for audiences for the first time at CinemaCon, the annual convention for movie theater owners.
The world premiere will take place on April 2 at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, more than two months ahead of the film’s theatrical release on June 13.
CinemaCon will undoubtedly be a receptive audience, but unveiling “How to Train Your Dragon” in this capacity signals Universal’s confidence in the movie’s commercial prospects. In previous years, CinemaCon attendees were first to see Paramount’s “Top Gun: Maverick” and Warner Bros. and DC’s “The Flash.”
Screening “How to Train Your Dragon” will help to build buzz for the live-action remake, which lands in multiplexes amid a packed summer season. Also on the calendar over the four hottest months of the year, there’s Marvel’s “Thunderbolts” (May 2), Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch” remake and...

The sense of shock at the sudden demise of film visual effects giant Mpc is palpable within the tightknit VFX industry, but few are surprised.
“I am gobsmacked,” said one UK VFX boss, who – like so many in the UK visual effects business – spent formative years of their career working at Mpc. For years, Mpc was the powerhouse name in film visual effects in the UK – the go-to facility for directors such as Ridley Scott and the leading VFX supplier to Disney and its Marvel superhero movies. Its Academy Award-winning work includes 1917, The Jungle Book and Life Of Pi.

One of the pioneers in visual effects and animation is on the verge of collapse. Technicolor Group, the venerated brand representing several major VFX companies, is facing “severe financial challenges” and in a whirlwind of activity over the last 72 hours is cutting hundreds of jobs and threatening hundreds more.
Technicolor Group is the parent company to advertising VFX firm The Mill, film and TV visual effects brand Mpc, global animation house Mikros Animation, and video game VFX team Technicolor Games.
On Friday, Reel 360 first published a Warn (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification) Act memo to staff saying that operations for the U.S. offices of all of Technicolor Group’s brands, including The Mill, Mpc, and Mikros, would cease as early as today, February 24.
Monday brought worse news, when Interpath, an administration and advisory firm in the UK, informed staffers that a “majority” of Technicolor Group’s 440 employees in the UK were made redundant,...
