It goes without saying that Javier Bardem is one of the best movie stars working today, as ever since his breakthrough performance in Before Night Falls, the Spanish actor has made a name for himself with his immersive techniques to get into characters. Although Bardem is a very versatile actor who is capable of playing many different types of characters, hes been particularly acclaimed in recent years for his roles as some of the most ruthless villains in recent memory. Bardem won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Anton Chigurh in the Best Picture winner No Country For Old Men, became one of the best James Bond villains ever in Skyfall, and even got to play a toxic womanizer in Vicky Cristina Barcelona. While it is always fun to see him chew the scenery and lean into his vindictive side, Bardem gave his most unfiltered...

An Ibero-American co-production between Fernando Bovaira’s Mod Producciones of Spain (“Biutiful”), Macipe’s El Pez Amarillo, Cimarrón (“Society of the Snow”) and Prisma, Argentina, the 90s-set film centers on Mauricio, a famous Spanish rock musician who decides to travel across Latin America in a bid to reconnect with his roots. An upcoming movie starring Tom Cruise has arguably the best ensemble cast of the celebrated actor's entire career. After maintaining his status as one of the biggest movie stars on the planet and the face of several massive action franchises such as Top Gun and Mission: Impossible, Cruise will be looking to take on more dramatic roles with experienced directors. Cruise recently signed a major deal with Warner Bros. which brings about all sorts of possibilities for sequels and original content.
Cruise had originally starred in more traditional dramas, comedies, and other genre films outside of action during his meteoric rise in Hollywood over the years. He made his feature film debut in the tragic romantic drama Endless Love (1981) before rising to prominence as the star of Risky Business (1983), The Color of Money (1986), and of course, the original Top Gun (1986). Making art is a personal gamble. To create something worthwhile you often have to dig deep and mine whatever is going on inside yourself in hopes of producing an artistic product which has authenticity. Remi R.M. Moses’ short Saving Art, a hospital-set drama that follows a struggling father who is battling with the guilt he feels offering optimistic lies to his ailing son, is exactly that kind of project, a film born from Moses’ own personal experience in the wake of his five year old niece’s diagnosis with leukaemia. It’s an incredibly brave film to make but it delivers on that artistic gamble, telling a story that is emotionally-challenging but incredibly rewarding and cathartic. Dn was delighted to first catch the short at the London Film School’s graduate showcase earlier this year and invited Moses to join us for a conversation amidst the film’s festival...

Pedro Pascal will be MCU’s new Reed Richards, with Vanessa Kirby taking on the role of Sue Storm. The Thing and the Human Torch will be played by Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Joseph Quinn respectively. Filming is expected to begin this summer, and due to the release date being switched, ‘Thunderbolts’ lost its July 2025 spot being moved to release earlier than expected on May 2, 2025. Despite the main cast being confirmed, there was not a speck of news regarding the movie’s possible villain.
We do have some rumors that Silver Surfer, Galactus, and Doctor Doom will make an appearance in the movie, but none of this is confirmed as of now. Speaking of Galactus, a few months ago we reported how...

We all know Galactus as one of the most menacing and terrifying beings in the Marvel Universe. Known as the ‘Devourer of Worlds’, he is enormously powerful and towers over entire galaxies, among other things. Who would be the ideal choice for the role if it were to appear on screen in the upcoming The Fantastic Four reboot?
Well, we all know and admire Javier Bardem’s spellbinding performances as twisted villains, don’t we? And even a new rumor suggests that the actor might take on the role of the world-eating villain Galactus in the awaited superhero movie.
The tip came from industry insider Jeff Sneider, who claimed that the same source who told him about Pedro Pascal’s role in the film also informed him of Bardem’s consideration for the part of the iconic, larger-than-life villain. Sneider said that while the Skyfall star might not be in...

Regarding Pedro Pascal’s involvement with Marvel’s forthcoming Fantastic Four film, the stretchy cat could be out of the bag! According to SAG-AFTRA, Pascal plays the patriarch of Marvel’s first family, Reed Richard, in the superhero spectacle, with production soon to begin. The reveal comes from a career retrospective organized and presented by SAG-AFTRA, saying Pascal “recently wrapped production on Ridley Scott’s highly anticipated Gladiator 2 and will soon begin production on Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four.” SAG-AFTRA redacted the bit about Pascal’s involvement with Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four, but only after eagle-eyed fans spotted the post.
While we’re still waiting for an official confirmation from Marvel, the SAG-AFTRA gaff lends credence to the long-whispered rumors about Pascal suiting up as Mr. Fanstastic.
Rumors about who will star in Marvel’s latest attempt to reboot the Fantastic Four have circulated since the project’s confirmation.

Film Constellation has boarded worldwide sales, and will introduce the project to buyers at the European Film Market.
The film centers on the origin story of Miguel de Cervantes, the author of the iconic novel “Don Quixote.” At the age of 28, Cervantes was taken captive by the Moors in Algiers, leading to his creative birth.

The next chapter of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s Monster anthology series has gained some significant star power as Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny join the cast as the parents of the Menéndez Brothers, José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menéndez. The upcoming season, officially titled Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story, focuses on the Menéndez brothers, who were convicted of the murders of their parents in 1996.
According to authorities, the brothers murdered their parents to inherit their father’s fortune. However, the brothers say they killed their parents after years of mental and physical abuse. Nicholas Alexander Chavez (General Hospital) and Copper Koch (They/Them) play Lyle Menendez and Erik Menéndez, respectively.

Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny have joined “Monster” Season 2 at Netflix, Variety has learned.
The two A-listers join previously announced stars Cooper Koch and Nicholas Alexander Chavez in the upcoming season of the anthology series, which will focus on the Menéndez brothers. The season is officially titled “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story” and is slated to debut later in 2024.
Erik (Koch) and Lyle Menéndez (Chavez) were convicted of the murders of their parents, José (Bardem) and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menéndez (Sevigny), in 1996. Authorities argued the brothers committed the murders to inherit their father’s fortune, while the brothers maintained that they killed their parents after years of mental and physical abuse.
“Monster” was co-created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan. Both serve as executive producers along with Alexis Martin Woodall, Eric Kovtun, David McMillan, Louise Shore, and Carl Franklin. The first season focused on serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer.

There is plenty of precedent for performers to still earn Oscar nominations after snubs by the Critics Choice Awards, Golden Globes and SAG Awards. Last year, Andrea Riseborough became the latest Oscar contender to come out of nowhere when she reaped a Best Actress bid for “To Leslie.”
She joined a roster of 23 other performers who heard their names on Oscar nominations morning despite being repeatedly overlooked earlier in awards season. However, for all of those who overcame these earlier snubs the nomination had to be reward enough as none took home the Oscar.
(Note: Marcia Gay Harden won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “Pollock” without any precursor bids. However, that was in 2001, the year before the Critics Choice introduced nominations. Frances McDormand won with that group for both “Almost Famous” and “Wonder Boys,” Kate Hudson took home the Globe for “Almost Famous” and Judi Dench prevailed at SAG for “Chocolat.

Ever since “The Holdovers” premiered at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival, 21-year-old Dominic Sessa has steadily attracted heaps of praise for his debut performance as one of its central characters. Despite earning recognition from some critics groups, he now unfortunately sits as a BAFTA longlist contender with no other key industry precursor bids. However, there is plenty of precedent for performers to still earn Oscar nominations after snubs by the Critics Choice Awards, Golden Globes and SAG Awards.

Indie and art film producer Jon Kilik, unlike many, remains hopeful for the personal, mid-budget movie for grown-ups. “Those are the films directors love to make and audiences still love,” says Kilik, being feted this week at Poland’s Camerimage cinematography festival for work of special visual sensitivity.
Having flown in from a shoot in Rome, Kilik confesses he still loves being on set after a career spanning four decades, including work with Spike Lee, Julian Schnabel, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, Jim Jarmusch and Oliver Stone.
His latest project filming in Europe, “In the Hand of Dante,” starring Gal Gadot and Oscar Isaac in a metaphorical journey through hell to paradise, is characteristic of Kilik’s lifelong passion for bringing challenging works of literature and art to the screen.
And he’s proven time and again that such films have an audience and are economically viable, he points out, if handled...

However, recent developments, possibly linked to strikes, have created a scheduling window, and the details are being worked out before the holiday break.

King Triton's role in the 2023 version of The Little Mermaid is different from the original, with more background and motivation provided for his ban on merpeople meeting humans. Javier Bardem perfectly embodies King Triton's complexities, making him one of the few improvements in the live-action remake. The remake also establishes a more direct connection between King Triton and the villain Ursula, adding personal stakes to their conflict.
King Triton is a central part of The Little Mermaid’s story, leading Disney's live-action version to cast an established and well-known actor in the role. While Ariel’s interest in humans and the world beyond the oceans always existed, leading her to build an impressive collection of trinkets over the years in both the original The Little Mermaid and the longer live-action remake, it becomes a point of contention once King Triton discovers it, as he always forbade humans and merpeople from fraternizing with each other.

“All Quiet on the Western Front” certainly didn’t go quietly into the 2023 Oscar nominations, announced Tuesday morning, January 24. The German drama about the horrors of trench warfare during World War I received nine nominations including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. It’s by far the most nominated film in a language other than English. Does that mean it’s a shoo-in to win Best International Feature?
Maybe, but maybe not. Based on the early predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users it’s the runaway favorite. As of this writing our Experts, Editors, Top 24 Users, and All-Star Top 24 are unanimous that the film will win the international title. That would make it the fourth film from Germany to take the prize and the first since “The Lives of Others” (2006), which was 16 years ago. But so far “All Quiet” hasn’t shown signs of dominance on the awards campaign trail.

Despite its polarizing response at its debut at the Venice and Telluride Film Festivals, there is still a path open to the Oscars for Aljeandro G. Iñárritu’s sweeping memoir film “Bardo,” also known as “Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths.” The Spanish-language film, shot in Mexico, is now the official Mexican selection for the International Feature Oscar.
Iñárritu has had great success with the academy before, winning Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay for 2015’s “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance),” and Best Director for 2016’s “The Revenant” (the icy survival picture that also won Leonardo DiCaprio his Best Actor award). Iñárritu also received a Special Achievement Award in 2018 for his interactive project “Flesh and Sand.”
Two previous Iñárritu films, 2000’s “Amores Perros” and 2010’s “Biutiful” went on to become one of the five nominees for international feature, but ultimately did not win the prize.

There are few filmmakers in the world more talented and exciting than Alejandro G. Iñárritu, whose prior features — Amores Perros (2000), 21 Grams (2003), Babel (2006), Biutiful (2010), Birdman (2014) and The Revenant (2015) — were each tremendously well-reviewed and, at the very least, Oscar-nominated. As you will probably recall, the Mexican filmmaker won the best director Oscar in back-to-back years, for Birdman and The Revenant, the former of which also won best picture and the latter of which probably came damn close, solidifying his place in cinema’s pantheon.
But the reality is that nobody who has ever directed films on a consistent basis — from Griffith to Hitchcock to Spielberg — has batted 1.000 in the eyes of critics or the Academy. At 8:45 pm mountain time, the Werner Herzog Theater looked about halfway full with patrons sitting down for the North American premiere of Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu’s latest film “Bardo (or False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths)” at the Telluride Film Festival. Maybe it was the 174-minute runtime after a long day of screenings that kept viewers at bay. Nevertheless, just shy of midnight, there was a round of applause as the credits rolled. Though it’s unclear what exactly what everyone was clapping for — perhaps themselves for having survived this rambling opus of cinematic over-indulgence.
After debuting in Venice, where the Oscar hopeful was pummeled by critics, the Netflix awards pony was looking for a comeback stateside to, at the very least, lift its Rotten Tomatoes score, which currently sits in the low 50s. Those numbers are likely to remain depressed.

Bardo opens theatrically in Mexico on October 27.
Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu saluted Netflix for ensuring his latest film Bardo, False Chronicle Of A Handful Of Truths would have a global theatrical rollout.
“The incredible thing is that now this film will be all over the theatres in Mexico and all over the world including in the US and in Spanish-speaking territories for seven weeks, and this is without precedent,” Iñárritu said at the film’s press conference at the Venice Film Festival. “I believe this is a film that really belongs in this space.”

Alejandro González Iñárritu’s first film set and shot in his native Mexico since he turned heads more than two decades ago with Amores Perros is as long and windy as its title. “It’s pretentious and pointlessly oneiric,” scoffs a fellow Mexican who has found success in crass commercialism rather than art and truth, dismissing the semi-autobiographical protagonist’s work. Iñárritu seems to be cheekily preempting his critics. However accurate you find that assessment, the epic existential comedy, Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths, is also a work of exacting craftsmanship, shifting with beguiling fluidity between dream and reality with ravishing visuals, shot on 65mm by the great cinematographer Darius Khondji.
At three overstuffed hours, the Netflix feature is a lot of movie. While there’s pleasure in surrendering to its languid rhythms and sinuous narrative detours — I was never...

The 2022 Cannes Film Festival is nearing its conclusion, and soon the jury will be selecting awards for this year’s impressive, albeit quieter, slate of films. After last year’s “Titane” from Julia Ducournau made history as the first female-directed film to fully win the Palme d’Or (Jane Campion’s “The Piano” tied with “Farewell My Concubine” in 1993), at this point in the festival, it doesn’t seem likely that a woman-directed project will walk away with it this year.
“Forever Young” by French-Italian director Valeria Bruni Tedeschi seems to be the only film directed by a woman that has so far invoked any passion for bringing it to the finish line. Claire Denis’ “Stars at Noon,” Kelly Reichardt’s “Showing Up,” Leonor Serraille’s “Mother and Son” and Charlotte Vandermeersch and Felix van Groeningen’s “Eight Mountains” are the other titles directed by women among the 21 contending features.

Netflix has acquired “Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths,” the new film from Oscar-winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu.
The highly-anticipated film is currently in post-production, and is expected to wrap by fall. There had been some mutterings that it might be ready in time for a Cannes debut, but that didn’t come to pass (there were rumors that it was headed to Netflix a few months ago).
Despite the fact that the film has been purchased by the most famous streaming service in the world, Netflix says it is committed to “a theatrical release on a global scale.” That will include a run in cinemas in Mexico, its country of origin, as well as in the U.S., Canada, UK, Italy, Spain, Germany, Argentina, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Scandinavia, the Netherlands, Japan and Korea. Netflix has backed robust theatrical rollouts for certain auteur filmmakers with whom it has...
