Shamier Anderson, Stephan James Honored With Hometown Walk of Fame Stars
Image
Canadian actor-brothers Shamier Anderson (John Wick 4) and Stephan James (If Beale Street Could Talk) had their stars unveiled on Scarborough’s Walk of Fame. The men were raised in the marginalized Toronto community by a single mother who emigrated to Canada from Jamaica.

“It’s really humbling and flattering to receive something like this in my hometown, at a mall where I grew up, where I shopped, it’s pretty cool,” Anderson told The Hollywood Reporter.

The local Walk of Fame honor for the fast-rising Hollywood stars is more than an exercise in collective positive thinking for an inner-city neighborhood that earlier brought to the world celebrities like Mike Myers, Jim Carrey and The Weeknd.

The brothers are at work via their Bay Mills Studios production banner — named after the community housing project they grew up in Scarborough — on a landmark TV drama set in the inner-city community that is their home away from Hollywood.

‘A Lot Of Nothing’ (2022) Ending, Explained: Do James And Vanessa Confront Brian Stanley?
Image
“A Lot of Nothing” is a compelling film that, just as the title states, has nothing, a lot and a lot of nothing. Each of these three aspects combines to give us an interesting plot that will surely get the viewer thinking. And the best part is the sound effects, which practically set the mood of almost every scene in the film. The makers certainly paid attention to the sounds they were going to use, and we have to admit that they have turned out to be effective. Here’s more.

James and Vanessa are an elite couple living in LA who have just found out that their neighbor, LAPD officer Bria Stanley, has shot a kid. It’s breaking news. Vanessa is enraged at how Brian shot a black kid and has had enough of his racist schemes. James, however, tells her to wait and find out the whole...

Next Big Thing: ‘John Wick 4’ Star Shamier Anderson on Amplifying Black Talent and Learning to Say “No A Lot More”
Image
If anyone embodies Drake’s song “Started From the Bottom,” Shamier Anderson, a fellow Canadian, does. “I’ve been grinding for a minute from Toronto,” says the actor, who grew up in Scarborough, a marginalized district with three brothers and their single mom, a Jamaican immigrant. “My mother didn’t accept the labels that we had very little hope, very little promise. She used to tell us, ‘Even though they label you as an at-risk community, we’re at risk to be extraordinary.’ “

Anderson took his mother’s words to heart: He started from the bottom, and now he’s here.

At 6-foot-2, he walks into the Southgate Bar at the Essex Hotel in New York, smiling brightly even though he’s in the middle of a 48-hour sprint promoting his latest movie, Bruiser. Streaming now on Hulu, the Onyx Collective drama stars Anderson as the temperamental father of an...

‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,’ Will Smith, Angela Bassett Win Big at 2023 NAACP Image Awards
Image
The 54th NAACP Image Awards, which aired on CBS from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium Saturday night, has wrapped. Queen Latifah hosted the proceedings, which honored the best in Black entertainment for the proceeding year. Inclusive awards that they are, the Image Awards often give a hat-tip to performers of color who aren’t Black, though: Tenoch Huerta Mejía won Best Supporting Actor for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” which also won Outstanding Motion Picture.

That film received another big award in the form of Best Supporting Actress for Angela Bassett, who is by far now the frontrunner for the Academy Award. It was one of two awards of the night for Bassett, as she also won Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series for her role in “9-1-1.”

Among other notable winners, Will Smith won Best Actor for his role in “Emancipation.” And “P-Valley” won Outstanding Drama Series, along with Nico...

‘Body Parts’ Review: Crew Members Discuss the Nuts and Bolts of Sex in the Movies
Harvey Weinstein and Ryan Kavanaugh
This review originally ran June 12, 2022, in conjunction with the film’s world premiere at the Tribeca Festival.

Over the last five years, society has gotten a crash course in Hollywood sexism. With Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor’s groundbreaking reporting on Harvey Weinstein came countless other stories of women’s mistreatment at the hands of producers, directors and even fellow actors.

Some of the most arresting stories along these lines come from crew members, like stunt coordinators who work on rape scenes. In her new documentary “Body Parts,” Kristy Guevara-Flanagan interviews actors, film and TV creators, and crew members who work behind the scenes to put sex onscreen.

Though the film overwhelmingly focuses on big names like Joey Soloway and Rose McGowan, its strongest material comes from accounts by less glitzy experts: body doubles, scholars, intimacy coordinators and one remorseful visual effects artist.

The film’s thesis is nothing new:...

‘A Lot of Nothing’ Review – An Incoherent Social Thriller
Image
The directorial debut from actor Mo McRae isn’t a traditional thriller about racism. In fact, the opening scene of A Lot of Nothing is more dramatic than it is exciting or suspenseful. Here the two main characters, affluent and successful couple James and Vanessa (Y’Ian Noel and Cleopatra Coleman), are watching an evening news segment about a local police incident; a Black child was reportedly killed by a white officer. The protagonists then enter a heated argument — really just verbal foreplay set to funky background music — after realizing the cop in question is their neighbor Brian (Justin Hartley).

A Lot of Nothing is described as a satirical thriller, but the longer the movie goes on, that description becomes less and less accurate. The closest thing to satire occurs when James and Vanessa go to their respective jobs the next day; he’s a corporate lawyer and she works in finances.

‘A Lot of Nothing’ Review: Mo McRae’s Directorial Feature Debut Takes on Police Killings
Mo McRae in Criminal Squad (2018)
Mo McRae’s face may be more recognizable than his name. As an actor for more than 20 years with over 60 credits and counting he’s worked steadily, appearing on TV and in film in such roles as Benjamin Berry in “The Flight Attendant,” Blip Sanders on the short-lived “Pitch,” and Gus Henderson in “Den of Thieves.” Now he’s moved behind the camera as the co-writer and director of “A Lot of Nothing,” his feature film debut.

Officially, the film is about an uber-successful Black married couple whose perfect lives are knocked off kilter when they learn via the evening news that their cop neighbor, who is white, has killed a kid. In a time where the police killings of Tyre Nichols in Memphis and George Floyd in Minneapolis are front of mind, they assume that the victim is Black and decide to get answers. And that’s when everything goes wrong.

Brandon Cronenberg in Antiviral (2012)
‘Infinity Pool’ Review: Extreme Sci-Fi Tale Squanders a Promising Premise
Brandon Cronenberg in Antiviral (2012)
It’s easy to imagine certain socially conservative audience members sitting in the audience for filmmaker Brandon Cronenberg’s latest, clutching their pearls until their knuckles bleed. But fans of extreme cinema like “Infinity Pool” are more likely to find it merely disappointing. It’s violent, sure, and it’s sexual, but it’s not a controversial exploration of challenging ideas. It’s a Souplantation salad bar of half-developed plot points and superficial graphic imagery, in service of a theme that’s about as generic as anything you’d find in a mainstream studio film.

The film starts the way so many films do, with a writer who has writer’s block, in search of inspiration. Alexandar Skarsgård (“The Northman”) plays James Foster, who wrote one book years ago and hasn’t published a damned thing since, even though he’s married to Em, the daughter of a publishing magnate.

SXSW Film Review: Mo McRae’s ‘A Lot Of Nothing’
Image
Racial divides, mistrust and misunderstandings get a rambunctious, if understandably inconclusive workout in A Lot of Nothing, a dynamic and agitating feature debut by Mo McRae that had its world premiere at South by Southwest in the Narrative Feature Competition section. Layers of suspicions, animosity and aggressive feelings ebb and flow as an upscale Los Angeles black couple plays host to another couple and, unexpectedly, to a lower-class white cop who’s paying a price for what he did the night before. After a powerful first act, this turbulent work is obliged to downshift somewhat as it seeks some kind of conclusion that won’t be too pat or simplistic given the complex dynamics at hand. While it doesn’t end on a satisfying note, this is nonetheless an excitingly combustible piece that announces a vibrant talent unafraid to confront thorny issues head-on.

Co-written by McRae, who has acted in...
