Ambitious, but flawed, social commentary could have been deeper

This is an excellent example of a film that makes me feel so many things, that I ultimately feel nothing. The good aspects of this film, which is a taped stage production, are the ones that capture the essence of theater. The energy maintains throughout the film, and the actors are all very talented, though not perfect. It's flaws are hard to overlook unfortunately. The films introduces several characters that are never mentioned again, which left me anticipating their return. These extraneous characters draw the film out longer than it should, and the whole thing loses both momentum and coherency. Also, good musicals typically have songs that add to character development or explain a plot device. This production's music seems to be unconnected to the acting at times which put me off. A lot of great ideas and imagery (how clothes shape a person, how people want contradictory things, gender politics, etc) aren't used to their full potential. The flamboyant, sexually harassing gay character was stale, and the Reverend using the church money he harasses from people to pay for his daughter's trip to Paris seems to negate the insistent, over-arching Christian themes throughout. Can we get a though-provoking, conceptually solid black musical that doesn't simultaneously use the stereotypes it attempts to dismantle, soaked in Christianity?

    its awesome

This title ,and the movie itself, is a great example of how a women would like to be treated. If more guys tried to act like Joshua, more men would have women. I enjoyed the movie because he explains how men really are. If I was Domunique, Blair would have got what was coming for him. No guy is worth giving up your life long dream over. Blair needs to be taught a lesson. Joshua shows all the men that they need to stop being so insecure n help your woman out with her dream and you will be praised for it. Even though its just a movie it shows that, it shows that David E. Talbert most think like this. He did an incredible job!!! The title fits perfectly!!!

    Open Your Ears And Listen!

This play was wonderful to watch!!! These are the type of stories where men and women alike need to sit down and take notes. It depicts a woman who was almost destroyed by a man who thought that by sabotaging her dreams that she will love him, while also showing that us women ( or should I say some of us) need to let go of the past and "Keep Moving Forward". Now I would never add my comments to something that I don't know about, but coming from someone who's been there, because of my own self getting in the way of myself and not letting go of my past, I pushed away the only man that ever treated me with the utmost RESPECT. It's a story I find most powerful, uplifting and inspirational. David E. Talbert, I take my hat off to you. Keep doing what you doing, and keep sending the good message of the lord. I'M LISTENING!!!!
