The Coral Doc Set For September Theatrical Bow In UK

Exclusive: Dreaming of You: The Making of The Coral will begin a run at select theaters in the UK on September 12. The doc, about the journey of the British rock band, is going out through Sony Music Vision and J6 Films, with previews beginning on September 5. The film premiered at the Sheffield Doc/Fest last month. Directed by James Slater and narrated by members of the Merseyside band, the film includes reconstruction, archive footage and animation to capture the The Coral’s rise in the early 2000s, when they were teenagers at the start of a journey building their own escapist universe. Following the 2022 series finale of The CW’s Legacies, it’s now been three years since fans have gotten to enjoy anything new set in the world of The Vampire Diaries — and that’s three years too many, if you ask us.

Naturally, we took our concerns to former Vampire Diaries showrunner Julie Plec, who’s currently promoting her new Prime Video series We Were Liars. The new CW series stars Emmy nominee David Thewlis as Holmes, who finds himself caught up in a challenging case against his archenemy, Professor James Moriarty, played by Mission: Impossible II and Taken 3 actor Dougray Scott. During Holmes's feud with Moriarty, the detective joins forces with a young Indigenous American woman named Amelia Rojas, played by Blu Hunt. Rojas' mother was recently murdered, and Amelia intends to prove that Sherlock is her long-lost father.

In a new report by Variety, Sherlock & Daughter has been a critical and ratings success in both the U.S. and Australia, scoring season-best ratings on its American network, the CW. The show has also performed well on the digital streaming platform Max, reaching number four on the app's top ten list of most-watched programs.

There are three ways to turn Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes into a tv series or movie. The first is to do something akin to House, where the bones of the character are there but little else. The second is the Sherlock or Elementary route that reimagines the detective for the modern world. Finally, there is the platonic ideal of the canonically accurate Sherlock of Victorian-era London, which is what Sherlock & Daughter has done.

Sherlock and Daughter finds itself back to basics, but with a new take to differentiate it. Even within this canon-compliant version, the whimsy that has permeated the property is all but gone. What we are presented with is a London that veers much more towards Penny Dreadful than the Robert Downey Jr. films.

As a mystery, it’s no great shakes; at least in the early episodes sent to critics, it’s missing that satisfying snap of clues falling into place in clever ways.
