Amid the U.S. industry’s historic double strike of actors and writers, a top Hollywood executive is weighing in on how the two sides could work to resolve the labor impasse.
“We want to find a deal. We need to come to a deal. Even if the newspapers wrote otherwise. We want to go back to the table and resolve this issue quickly,” Tony Vinciquerra, chief executive of Sony Pictures Entertainment, said during the Audio-Visual Producers Summit in Trieste, Italy on Friday.
“It’s not true that we don’t want to negotiate,” said the executive, referring to the failed talks with SAG-AFTRA, the actors’ union that has been on strike since July 13. “It’s exactly the opposite. We are sorry for the strike. We are aware of the importance of screenwriters and actors, who are key partners in the production of films and series. The problem must be solved.

There are a bunch of raunchy comedy movies like The Girl Next Door for fans to enjoy. Inspired by the stock character of the same name, The Girl Next Door revolves around a high school nerd (Emile Hirsch) who falls for the young woman (Elisha Cuthbert) who moves in next door. However, his crush becomes a lot more complicated when he learns that she’s a former adult film star. While it wasn’t a huge box office hit on its initial release, The Girl Next Door has gained a sizable cult following in the years since.
The relatable insecurities tackled in The Girl Next Door are prevalent as they inspired many other comedies to explore similar themes and discuss topics that were once considered taboo. However, these comedies also try to improve the stereotypical characters and storylines found in The Girl Next Door, especially when the genre, as a whole,...

Wattpad Webtoon Studios, the entertainment arm of the user-generated fiction and comics entertainment outfit, and Italy’s Leone Film Group have announced two new adaptations based on hit young-adult Wattpad novels.
Taiwan-based author Ann Rae’s romantic mystery “The Locker Exchange,” which is set in a U.S. high school and has over 26 million reads globally on the Wattpad platform, is set to become an English and Italian-language feature film. And “Love Me, Love Me” by Italian writer Stefania S, which has scored 12 million reads in Italy, is to be adapted into an Italian-language series by Leone’s Lotus Production unit.
The two new adaptations expand on an existing deal that Leone inked last year to co-develop a slate of films for the Italian and international marketplace based on original fiction stories from Wattpad. That pact came after the two companies partnered to make a movie based on Blair Holden...

We’re deep into the dog days of summer, but Netflix’s list of new releases for August 2021 feels like fall.
That is to say that Netflix has some really good library TV titles this month that harken back to the glory days of the fall TV network calendar. August 1 sees the arrival of two of the best NBC shows of all time: Tina Fey comedy 30 Rock, and life-affirming (American) football drama Friday Night Lights. If you’ve not seen either, catch up with them both. That’s an order.

Italy’s David di Donatello Awards historically have been dominated by men in the key best picture, film, and producer categories. And this year is no exception.
All told, out of a total of 145 movies vying for the top Italian film prizes 17 are directed by women, which amounts to a mere 12%.
Women account for roughly 30% of the 1,578 voters for the Davids, which throughout their 66-year history have never seen a woman score the best director statuette. And that percentage marks a definite improvement over past editions.
Sadly significant fact: Lina Wertmuller – who in 1975 became the first woman nominated for a best director Oscar for “Seven Beauties” – has never been nominated for a David. That says a lot. Though Wertmuller was honored with a career David in 2010.
On the bright side, this year there are two women directors (out of five competing) in all of the prizes’ main categories.
Susanna Nicchiarelli’s “Miss Marx,...

Italy’s 66th David di Donatello Awards are set to celebrate on May 11 a year of resilience for Cinema Italiano that also looks likely to germinate some creative renewal, just as Italian movie theaters start to reopen and production is booming.
Giorgio Diritti’s biopic “Hidden Away,” about crazed primitivist painter Antonio Ligabue, Gianni Amelio’s wistful “Hammamet,” which reconstructs the Tunisian self-exile of scandal-plagued Italian leader Bettino Craxi, and dark drama “Bad Tales” by the D’Innocenzo Brothers lead the crowded field for Italy’s equivalent of the Oscars, with no clear frontrunner.
Significantly, “Hidden Away,” which scooped 15 nominations, and “Bad Tales,” which scored 13, both star actor Elio Germano. And Germano also plays the lead in another standout title in the Davids race, Netflix Italian Original “The Incredible Story of Rose Island,” which landed 11 noms, including one for the pic’s producer, multihyphenate Matteo Rovere, whose Groenlandia Group is having a banner year.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte on Sunday announced new measures to curb the spread of Covid-19 that fall short of a total lockdown, but include shuttering the country’s movie theaters starting on Monday through Nov. 24, barring further complications.
Though the government’s decision was expected – as coronavirus infections in Italy rose on Sunday to a new daily record of 21,273 infections and 128 deaths – the country’s exhibitors organization Anec immediately protested the forced closures of cinemas, firing off an open letter to the prime minister voicing their “disapproval” and underlining the move’s “devastating impact” for their business.
The new measures announced on Sunday also involve closing live theaters, gaming halls and gyms outright, while bars and restaurants must close after 6Pm. A nightly curfew will also be in place.
