Kaitlyn Dever “Couldn’t Watch” Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey’s Final Moment in ‘The Last of Us’: “I Don’t Know How You Guys Did That”
Image
After landing 16 Emmy nominations for season two of The Last of Us, its stars and creative team took a look back at the emotional season at HBO Max’s Nominee Celebration on Sunday.

Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, Kaitlyn Dever, Joe Pantoliano and editor Timothy Good joined co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann at the event, with the season’s second episode — which sees Dever’s Abby brutally murder Pascal’s main character, Joel — the subject of much of the conversation.

“You’re so inside of it that you really kind of lose sight of what it will mean when a TV audience experiences episode two of season two,” Pascal told the crowd, and given that Joel also dies in the video game that the series is based on, “I’m like, ‘Well, everyone knows this is gonna happen,’ because I’ve just been living with it for such a long time.

Jeff Hiller Confesses RuPaul Is the Celebrity He Most Wants to Meet at His First Emmys
Image
Jeff Hiller’s first Emmy nomination for his three-season run as Joel on the HBO comedy Somebody Somewhere is still sinking in. “My husband, he’ll be like, ‘I’m getting a wave again,’ ” Hiller says. “It feels that way for me, too, where I’m like, ‘Wait, I get to go to L.A., I’m going to get to wear something fun.’ Somebody just told me they have swag suites. I was like, ‘What?!'”

The semi-autobiographical series is inspired by the life of its star and executive producer, Bridget Everett, who portrays Sam Miller, a 40-something who returns to her conservative hometown of Manhattan, Kansas, to care for her dying sister. At a dead-end job, Sam befriends a former high school classmate she can barely remember— Joel — and the duo navigate aging parents and midlife breakups, with Joel encouraging a closed-off Sam to open up to the...

TV’s Top Shows Are Flirting With Disaster
Image
Even if everything were going smoothly in the world, the scenes recently of a tsunami rolling across the Pacific to Hawaii and then to the West Coast of the U.S. would have been unnerving.

After all, to the many of us who watched Paradise, Hulu and ABC’s smash hit this year, that is exactly how the world ends — or, at least, nearly all of the world that doesn’t manage to escape to the tech-enabled mountain city where Sterling K. Brown is guarding a president. Watching the show this spring we, already drenched in general fears of climate change, were suddenly thinking about an extremely specific event that had not occurred to most of us before. And now, that event was rolling across our news screens.

Television and reality have been colliding in improbable ways these past few months. The big Emmy contenders always have a socially relevant show here or there,...

Hollywood Flashback: Kristen Bell Sleuthed Out Success With ‘Veronica Mars’
Image
Before landing her first Emmy nomination for Nobody Wants This, Kristen Bell earned out-of-this-world praise for her breakout role on Veronica Mars.

Rob Thomas created the Upn mystery series that starred Bell as the titular high school student who works at her dad’s private investigation agency after her best friend, Lilly, is murdered. The cast included Jason Dohring, Percy Daggs III and Enrico Colantoni, with Amanda Seyfried recurring as Lilly.

In an interview last year timed to Veronica Mars’ 20th anniversary, Bell said that the show “allowed me to discover who I am and what I’m good at.” She also deemed it “the hardest job I have had to date” and explained, “That was before the union was enforcing any real rules, and we were there for 17 hours a day. … It was just such a physically demanding shoot.”

Veronica Mars premiered Sept. 22, 2004, and THR’s review noted that,...

When Amanda Seyfried Revealed Why She Passed On Gamora In Guardians Of The Galaxy: “I Didn’t Want To Be…”
Image
Amanda Seyfried almost starred in Guardians of the Galaxy ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

In a bold twist of fate, Seyfried turned Guardians of the Galaxy down, fearing it might be the first Marvel movie to tank. “I didn’t want to be part of the first Marvel bomb,” she shared on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, adding some legit drama to her decision-making process.

Picture this: 2014, and the film’s premise incorporates a talking tree and a raccoon. Seyfried was skeptical. “Who wants to see a movie about a talking tree and a raccoon?” she mused. Well, the box office said “everybody.” Per Box Office Mojo, the movie went on to rake in $772M worldwide (pretty bombastic!).

Amanda Seyfried Was Worried About Her Career

Despite the killer script, Seyfried was more worried about her career than cosmic adventures. “Because if you are the star of a giant movie like that,...

Image
Lo and behold, Jennette McCurdy, one of your favorite child stars from shows like iCarly, Sam & Cat, and Victorious, is stepping back into the spotlight, even if it is not in the way that you would expect. Her New York Times bestselling memoir, I’m Glad My Mom Died, is getting the miniseries treatment at Apple TV+. After staying away from show business for years, she is taking on behind-the-scenes duties for the show.

Apple TV+ announced the series in early July 2025, with Friends star Jennifer Aniston set to both star and executive produce. I’m Glad My Mom Died recounts McCurdy’s time as a child actress, which was deeply impacted by her relationship with her abusive and dominating mother, Debra McCurdy. The memoir was released in 2022, nine years after the death of Debra McCurdy due to stage-four breast cancer.

Hollywood Flashback: Brooke Shields’ Jeans Ad Did Not Sit Well
Image
Decades before Sydney Sweeney’s American Eagle ad campaign sparked online furor, a series of jeans commercials featuring Brooke Shields similarly ignited controversy.

In 1980, a 15-year-old Shields starred in a series of print and TV ads for Calvin Klein. One TV spot, in which she delivered the brand’s suggestive tagline — “You want to know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing.” — caused outrage given Shields’ age, leading some networks to decline to run the ads.

The campaign also included a commercial in which Shields used wordplay involving “jeans” and “genes,” with Shields stating: “Genes are fundamental in determining the characteristics of an individual and passing on these characteristics to succeeding generations.”

This spot returned to the cultural limelight amid backlash surrounding American Eagle’s recent campaign titled “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.” In one video promoted by the company, the actress says, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring,...

Michelle Williams Muses on the Real Love Story at the Center of ‘Dying for Sex’
Image
This isn’t Michelle Williams’ first Emmys rodeo. The golden laurel has taken residence in her home since 2019, when she won for outstanding lead actress in a limited series or movie for portraying Tony-winning actress and dancer Gwen Verdon in the FX biographical drama Fosse/Verdon. Now she’s back in the same race for Dying for Sex, also on FX, but that doesn’t make campaigning any easier.

“I get so nervous,” Williams, 44, confesses. “It’s a lot of adrenaline and I still have to keep taking my own advice, which is to try and stay in the moment and enjoy it because it’s all over so quickly.”

Williams is nominated for her portrayal of real-life podcaster Molly Kochan, who, upon a terminal cancer diagnosis in 2015, separated from her husband of 15 years and embarked on a journey of sexual exploration that included multiple casual liaisons with a variety of male suitors.

Halsey has been making the transition from musician to movie star in recent years — including with a breakout role in 2024’s MaXXXine — but the first major project she shot is just now making its way to theaters.

Americana — a modern western from writer-director Tony Tost which follows several people as their lives violently intertwine while fighting over an expensive Native American ghost shirt— was shot in 2022, premiered at SXSW in 2023 and is finally heading to this big screen this month.

“I’d been waiting a really long time, I’d been really cautiously picky about what I was going to do for my first project for getting into this world, into this space,” Halsey told The Hollywood Reporter at the film’s Los Angeles premiere on Sunday. “Tony reached out and he was so personable and so talented and I just really connected with the script and the character. The Big Bang Theory is one of the most famous sitcoms of all time, and continues to be popular even over six years after its finale. As the universe continues to expand, creator Chuck Lorre focused on different projects.

After creating two more additions to The Big Bang Theory universe, Young Sheldon and Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage, Lorre has a new sitcom on Netflix: Leanne. The filmmaker co-created the show with Susan McMartin and Leanne Morgan, and it premiered on the streaming platform on Jul. 31. Shortly after its release, audiences gave Leanne an exciting, near-perfect 96% approval score on Rotten Tomatoes, marking a thrilling start for the new sitcom.

Oasis Play Wembley: 5 Takeaways From Liam and Noel Gallagher’s Nostalgia-Packed Return to Stage
Image
“Right then, London, you mad-heads… It’s good to be fucking back.” Words only Liam Gallagher could say.

He and brother Noel finally decided to make amends after years of familial feuding in a move that prompted frenzy last year.

In September, Oasis confirmed their reunion gigs were set to take place across the U.K. “This is it, this is happening,” they had said, as fans prepared to spend hundreds — maybe even thousands — of pounds on tickets. Then, North America dates were released. The duo announced they were playing Toronto, Chicago, L.A., New Jersey and Mexico City across August and September.

Earlier this month, the year-long wait ended: the brothers kicked off the year’s buzziest tour in Cardiff, playing together for the first time in over 16 years for a vast crowd in Wales.

On Friday, it was London’s turn. The famed Wembley venue was practically vibrating...

More Than Cosplay: ‘Ghostbusters’ Fans Answer the Call to Do Good
Image
When filmmaker Jason Reitman set out to make Ghostbusters: Afterlife in 2020, he ran into a problem: Many of the original props his dad, Ivan, had used to make the 1984 film — flight suits, proton packs, even the iconic Ecto-1 — had deteriorated after decades in storage.

“We were doing this archaeological dig into, ‘Ok, how do we still make a Ghostbusters film?’ ” recalls Reitman. “There were pieces that were no longer available.”

The solution came from an unlikely place. Over the years, Ghostbusters fan groups around the world had perfected the art of re-creating props for cosplay. The production ended up consulting some of these fans and adopting their DIY techniques to help restore the gear.

But Reitman soon discovered these groups were doing more than just playing dress-up.

“They were not simply cosplaying for Comic-Con but rather were doing this for charity,” he says. “They were visiting children’s hospitals. They...

Taylor Sheridan on His ‘One Rule’ That Fueled His God Complex Criticism: “You don’t get to tell me ‘No’”
Image
Taylor Sheridan doesn’t just create hit shows – he controls them with an iron will. His method is simple: total control, no compromises. If something needs to happen, it happens. If it costs more, he’ll figure out how to pay for it. What you don’t get to do is tell him “No.” This isn’t a metaphor – it’s how he actually works. He added the same in an interview with Frontier Partisans:

My one rule with line producers and production people is: You don’t get to tell me ‘no,’ you get to tell me how much ‘yes’ costs, and then I decide where to pull that money from. It’s easy to tell me, ‘Taylor, you cannot have a helicopter for two days.’ That’s not the deal. I’m going to get a helicopter for two days. I’m going to swap this location to over here,...

‘Drag Race’ Star Ginger Minj on Winning ‘All Stars’ and the Advice Trixie Mattel Gave Her After Snatching the Crown
Image
For Ginger Minj, the fourth time on RuPaul’s Drag Race was the charm.

After making her debut in 2015 on the seventh season of the RuPaul Charles-led drag show, the Florida native nearly won the title of America’s Next Drag Superstar, but came up short. Then, she returned a year later to compete in the second season of the All Stars spinoff. And again for All Stars season six, where similarly to her run on season seven, she made it to the finale but did not win the show.

It came as a surprise to some viewers when Ginger was announced as part of the cast of All Stars season 10, considering she’d already competed a total of three times before and almost won on two separate occasions. Despite disdain from Drag Race’s fandom (which is known to be rather toxic), the drag artist tells The Hollywood Reporter that...

From ‘South Park’ to George Lucas’ First Comic-Con: Inside the Most Anticipated Panels
Image
Usually, not having a Marvel Studios panel signals a less than exciting convention. There’s less rock-star energy and less hyped-up news (like last year’s Robert Downey Jr. reveal as Doctor Doom). But even with Marvel sitting out this year’s Comic-Con, the lineup is still surprisingly robust. (The below presentations all will appear in Hall H.)

South Park (July 24, 6:45 p.m.)

Creators Trey Stone and Matt Parker don’t mince words, and with the panel coming amid their $3 billion battle over the future of South Park, fans are hoping for some grousing about Skydance, the presumptive soon-to-be owner of Paramount they have blamed for holding up season 27.

The Long Walk (July 25, 3 p.m.)

The stacked cast of up-and- comers, including Cooper Hoffman and Alien: Romulus breakout David Jonsson, could make it The Outsiders of this generation. But the real reason to attend is to see how Lionsgate will position the film,...

Why Rock Music Is Thriving in the Streaming Era
Image
A decade ago, Gene Simmons of Kiss made a declaration: rock is officially dead. Or as he told Esquire, it was “murdered” by an era of piracy and file-sharing. The guitar, he lambasted, was becoming a relic.

Over a decade later, it would appear that reports of the genre’s demise have been greatly exaggerated. Halfway through 2025, rock is among the fastest-growing genres in the country, according to Luminate’s just-released midyear report, outpacing both Latin and country in the U.S.

Leading the rock charge are a pair of newcomers: Sweden’s Ghost and British best new artist contenders Sleep Token, who both managed to top the Billboard 200 album chart within two weeks of each other in May, ending a years-long rock drought. In Sleep Token’s case, the band’s Even in Arcadia broke the record for most-streamed hard rock album in one week, Billboard reported at the time.

Lindsay Lohan Wants to Do “Some More Serious, Dramatic Roles” After ‘Freakier Friday’
Image
Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis are back together, 22 years after starring in beloved comedy Freaky Friday.

Freakier Friday reunites the duo as mother and daughter Tess and Anna Coleman, who swapped bodies in the original film and, in the sequel, discover that lightning may indeed strike twice.

At Freakier Friday‘s L.A. premiere on Tuesday, Lohan told The Hollywood Reporter that the follow-up movie is “bigger, we have more stories to tell. It’s a four-way swap and there’s more music and there’s a lot more physical comedy than the first one, which I love. Any moment that I can pull a Lucile Ball, I’m down for it.”

Billy Joel Breaks Silence About Brain Disorder: “I Feel Good”
Image
Billy Joel has opened up being diagnosed with brain disorder Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (Nph), news that alarmed fans of the iconic singer after he canceled upcoming concerts earlier this year.

“I feel fine. My balance sucks. It’s like being a boat,” Joel told Bill Maher’s Club Random podcast, which dropped on Monday (below). Joel, who was seated at a piano during the interview, added that doctors are still caring for his condition, which used to be called “water on the brain” and for which there’s little understanding of a cause.

“They don’t know… I thought it must be from drinking,” Joel, who has since given up alcohol, ventured. “I feel good. They keep referring to what I have as a brain disorder, so it sounds a lot worse than what I’m feeling,” he insisted.

When the legendary singer and songwriter first shared his health diagnosis in late May,...

Trump Reacts to ‘Late Show’ Ending: “I Absolutely Love That Colbert Got Fired”
Image
Donald Trump posted his reaction to CBS announcing the upcoming cancellation of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.

The president said he was saddened by the company’s decision to end such an iconic series, and added that even though Colbert frequently mocked and criticized him over the years, that he nonetheless respected Colbert as media professional and wished him the best of luck moving forward.

Kidding. Trump positively gloated (as we predicted he would), and took shots at ABC late night host Jimmy Kimmel and NBC host Jimmy Fallon while he was at it.

“I absolutely love that Colbert got fired,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Friday morning. “His talent was even less than his ratings. I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next. Has even less talent than Colbert! [Fox News late night host] Greg Gutfeld is better than all of them combined, including the Moron on NBC who...

Is Taylor Sheridan a Republican? ‘Yellowstone’ Creator’s Politics Is Surprisingly Paradoxical
Image
Taylor Sheridan isn’t riding for the red or the blue team, at least not publicly. The man behind Yellowstone and its sprawling universe of spinoffs has been pegged by many as a conservative voice in Hollywood. But he refuses to be branded with any political label. Republican? Democrat? He might laugh at the question. While critics brand his wildly successful Yellowstone as “red-state Game of Thrones,” Sheridan fiercely rejects that characterization. In his words:

They refer to it as ‘the conservative show’ or ‘the Republican show’ or ‘the red-state Game of Thrones.’ And I just sit back laughing. I’m like, ‘Really?’

It’s easy to see why the assumption persists. His shows feature tough-talking ranchers, heavy gunplay, and a stoic reverence for old-school masculinity, a cocktail that’s earned him a massive following in rural, right-leaning America. But scratch beneath the surface, and the politics get complicated. Sheridan...

‘Smurfs’ Is a Rihanna Passion Project: “She Was Pursuing It”
Image
Getting Rihanna to star in the new Smurfs movie may seem like a big ask, but it turns out that may have been the easiest part of the process for director Chris Miller.

The superstar voices Smurfette in the animated film, along with serving as a producer and recording original music for the project. At the Los Angeles premiere on Sunday, Miller joked to The Hollywood Reporter that he would love to take credit for bringing Rihanna in, but the reality was “Rihanna wanted to play Smurfette in the Smurfs movie, she was pursuing it and wanting it. Talking to her, it became clear almost immediately like, ‘Oh, you have to be Smurfette. You have to bring your perspective, your own voice, your authenticity to the character.'”

In addition to doing two songs for the film, Miller also points to “a lot of needledrops, beautiful sonic landscapes that Rihanna...

Hollywood Flashback: Before ‘The Naked Gun,’ ‘Police Squad!’ Took Its Shot
Image
Four decades ago, Police Squad! didn’t log much time with viewers but still lined up an impressive legacy.

Following the success of 1980 spoof film Airplane!, which made $78 million at the box office ($214 million today) co-directors David Zucker, Jim Abrahams and Jerry Zucker hoped to make a similar comedy about police officers inspired by the 1950s Lee Marvin drama series M Squad. Then-Paramount exec Michael Eisner, who had championed Airplane!, offered them six episodes on ABC and promised that the process would be free of network meddling.

Police Squad! centered on bumbling officer Frank Drebin as played by Leslie Nielsen, known for dramatic roles before his crackup part in Airplane! “Leslie never let on that he was in a comedy,” David Zucker tells The Hollywood Reporter of the late star’s knack for deadpan humor.

Co-starring Alan North, each episode kicked off with the murder of a notable guest,...

Justin Bieber ‘as we’ve never heard him before’: What the critics are saying about the surprise album ‘Swag’
Image
Earlier today, Justin Bieber shocked the music world by releasing his first album in four years with less than 24 hours' notice.

And now Swag, the Canadian pop star's seventh studio album, is out in the world, and critics are weighing in on their initial reactions to the record.

Across the board, music writers are recognizing this as something other than a triumphant pop return for Bieber, who has become a father since 2021's Justice. Swag is emotional and confessional that feels at least somewhat new for Bieber.

"Within a couple tracks of Swag, it’s pretty clear this is Bieber as we’ve never really heard him before — stripped of most of his usual big pop trappings, with a much more organic-sounding, alt-r&b-focused sound aided by recognizable sonic architects like Dijon, Mk.Gee and new primary artistic partner Carter Lang supporting his tender ballads of love and devotion," writes Billboard's Andrew Unterberger.

“I’m actually retiring”: Justin Bieber’s Love & Hate Bond With Music and Retirement Drama

With those words, Justin Bieber didn’t just stir his fan base; he cracked the internet. For an artist who once set teenage hearts sprinting with every note, it’s hard to believe that now, as insiders reveal, he stares blankly at a piano that once sparked joy. According to a stark and intimate Substack exposé by Rob Shuter, the Canadian pop superstar is knee-deep in a creative freeze, unable to write, unable to feel; his spark has dimmed.

The emotional frostbite doesn’t end there. Rumors of a crumbling marriage to Hailey Bieber loom in the background. Per the source:

He used to hear a beat and light up. Now he just stares.

Reportedly, there’s a lot of pressure on him from fans, from the industry, and from his personal life.

He’s in his head.

Doechii on Viral BET Awards Speech Calling Out President Trump: “Wasn’t Sh** They Could Do”

Doechii said using her moment in the spotlight at the recent BET Awards to denounce President Trump’s immigration raids in Los Angeles felt like the right thing to do.

The BET Awards were held at the Peacock Theater in Downtown Los Angeles on June 9, a time when United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) had recently been carrying out raids across the area. ‘The Young and the Restless’ leads the 2025 Daytime Emmy nominations, followed by ‘General Hospital’ and ‘Days of Our Lives’: See the complete list
Image
The Young and the Restless is the show to beat at this year's Daytime Emmy Awards.

The venerable soap led the field with 19 nominations on Thursday, followed by General Hospital with 16 and Days of Our Lives with 13. The Best Drama Series category is back to just those three nominees after last year's record-tying six contenders vied for the top prize. As Gold Derby previously reported, buzzy new soap opera Beyond the Gates was not eligible this year but will contend at the 2026 kudos.

The six-person lineup for Best Drama Actress includes four from The Young and the Restless — Sharon Case, Eileen Davidson, Melissa Claire Egan, and Michelle Stafford — plus Nancy Lee Grahn and Laura Wright from General Hospital.

The five Best Drama Actor nominees hail from all three nominated soaps: Days of Our Lives' Eric Martsolf, Greg Rikaart, and Paul Telfer; The Young and the Restless' Peter Bergman; and General Hospital's Dominic Zamprogna.

Keanu Reeves Spends Thousands Monthly Battling Deep-Fake Profiles

Keanu Reeves spends several thousand dollars each month on a specialist takedown service that has already erased roughly 400 000 fake profiles across TikTok, Instagram and Facebook, reflecting a broader surge in deep-fake celebrity scams that cost U.S. victims an estimated $637 million last year. “Unreal Keanu” and similar AI-generated accounts still attract millions of followers, while platform rules and looming U.S. legislation aim to curb the threat—but enforcement often depends on stars’ ability to finance constant monitoring.

Keanu Reeves pays a private monitoring firm “a few thousand dollars a month” to hunt down imitation profiles that use his likeness across TikTok, Instagram and Facebook and file rapid takedown requests. The company says it has removed about 400 000 fraudulent accounts in the past year, including pages impersonating the actor’s representatives. IGN first disclosed the arrangement, and a subsequent industry report described it as part of a subscription model increasingly favored by high-profile clients.

Fractured Reflections: The Illusion of Empowerment in Action Heroines
Image
The Misquote Heard 'Round the Web Back in 2022, during Variety’s 'Actors on Actors' series, Jennifer Lawrence added a bold- if inaccurate- claim to her résumé: that she was the first woman to lead an action movie. “Nobody had ever put a woman in the lead of an action movie,” she said, seated across from Viola Davis. She was swiftly dragged across the internet, from Fox News segments to YouTube takedowns, with seemingly every outlet eager to remind her just how wrong she was. In a follow-up with 'The Hollywood Reporter', Lawrence clarified she had simply misspoken- nervous in the presence of a “living legend,” Viola Davis. Honestly, fair. I wouldn’t be able to string two words together if I was sitting across from arguably the greatest actress of her generation. And in a way, something positive did come out of the backlash: a renewed spotlight on...

Karen Pittman Teases a “Wild Ride” in Store for Season 4 of ‘The Morning Show’
Image
Keeping up with Karen Pittman has been a tall order in June.

The actress, one of the stars of Apple TV+’s The Morning Show who recently starred on Forever on Netflix, spent a big chunk of the month in Europe where she attended back-to-back film festivals with Filming Italy Sardegna followed by a pit stop in Malta for the Mediterrane Film Festival’s closing night Golden Bee Awards.

It was on the latter’s blue carpet where Pittman offered The Hollywood Reporter a few minutes of her time before she headed inside to the black-tie gala at which she presented a trophy alongside Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier. “It’s amazing. It’s beautiful,” she said of her first impressions of Malta. “It’s an extraordinary island. The weather, the sights, the architecture, everything. But what I love most about Malta is the people — warm, inviting, welcoming. I would love...

Does Pedro Pascal Have Kids? Why Does He Keep Playing Father Figures On-Screen? And What’s His Take on His “Daddy Status”?
Image
Pedro Pascal On Playing Surrogate Dads in The Last of Us & The Mandalorian Despite Not Being a Parent Himself (Photo Credit – YouTube)

Pedro Pascal’s recent wave of success comes with a recurring pattern. He’s almost always cast as the protective, slightly damaged father figure. Whether it’s space missions with a tiny alien or navigating a broken world with a teenage girl, his characters often lean into the dad zone.

Yet, off-screen, Pascal lives a very different reality. He isn’t married, doesn’t have children, and doesn’t plan on becoming a parent. Still, the actor continues to take roles where he plays a surrogate father, and fans have turned that into an entire online identity. Pascal, however, is not only aware of it, but he’s fully playing along.

THR’s 2025 Power Business Managers: Nominations Are Now Open
Image
What do celebrities who seem to have everything need most? Someone to manage and help look after it all.

Every year, The Hollywood Reporter recognizes the town’s best and most influential business managers working behind the scenes to manage the financial lives of entertainment’s most high-profile figures.

Business managers in Hollywood work with coteries of lawyers, agents and assistants in the employ of the town’s filmmakers, entertainers and movers and shakers to project earnings from potential projects, endorsements, brand launches, appearances and other forms of revenue. They then run point overseeing millions of dollars in investments, assets and bank accounts that go to fuel celebrities’ lifestyles: Any time you see, say, a multimillion-dollar real estate purchase by an A-lister, a business manager has vetted it and advised for (or against) it.

Whenever a new star breaks through with their first big pay day, or an influencer develops a pernicious spending habit,...

Why Even Jeff Bezos Can’t Buy His Way Into L.A.’s Hottest Restaurant
Image
On June 25, Somni, a restaurant in West Hollywood tucked away on a small street behind Dan Tana’s, was awarded a prestigious third star at a Michelin Guide ceremony held in Sacramento, making it one of just 16 restaurants in the country to hold that distinction. (Providence, located 4 miles east in Hollywood, also received its third star that night.)

The achievement is made all the more impressive by Somni’s near-death experience, having faced a pandemic closure in 2020, less than two years after its debut. But its chef and founder Aitor Zabala — who apprenticed under José Andrés in his native Barcelona — had faith in his tasting-menu concept, and in November 2024 Somni returned to even greater fanfare and acclaim.

Now it’s harder than ever to snag one of its 14 spots for one of Zabala’s playful culinary extravaganzas. Each seating features around 25 intricately constructed courses. Cost is about $500 a person — or $720 with wine pairing.

Charlize Theron Calls Out Immigration Policies That Have “Destroyed the Lives of Families, Not Criminals”
Image
Charlize Theron hosted the fifth annual Block Party for her Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (Ctaop) on Saturday night, where she got real about how, in 2025, “the world feels like it’s burning.”

Theron took the stage to kick off the event — which raises funds to help Ctaop support the health and safety of youth in her native South Africa — on the Universal Studios backlot, deadpanning, “I think we might be the only people who did not get an invite to the Bezos wedding. But that’s Ok because they suck and we’re cool.”

She went on to thank attendees for “taking the time to be a part of this, especially when the world feels like it’s burning because it is. Here in Los Angeles, in the U.S. and across the globe, we’re moving backwards fast. Immigration policy has destroyed the lives of families, not criminals...

If ‘The Bear’ Season 4 Premieres Without Promotion …
Image
The Bear is out of hibernation. FX premiered the fourth season of its hit fine-cuisine dramedy on Hulu on Wednesday, June 25, which may come as a surprise to you.

Ahead of the first season of The Bear, you could not take New York City mass transit without being bombarded by ads for the unknown cooking show starring the guy who played Lip on Shameless. But even commuters couldn’t fathom that the billboard they were staring at would turn into the new show of the year, let alone the summer. Ahead of the fourth season, anecdotally, it felt like there were fewer ads on the street — but there sure were plenty on our TikTok feeds. (A spokesperson for FX told us the marketing campaign was as robust as ever.)

You’ve probably also read little season four promotion in the press — like in The Hollywood Reporter, for example — and there are multiple reasons for that.

J-Pop Duo Yoasobi on Why Their Unique Concept Has Helped Lead to Global Success
Image
As J-Pop’s popularity continues to rise in the U.S., acts like Yoasobi have built a successful fanbase and reputation.

The Japanese duo — made up of producer Ayase and singer-songwriter Ikura — toured the U.S. in 2024, stopping along the way to play for large crowds at Coachella and Lollapalooza. Earlier this year, the group returned to L.A. for Matsuri’25, a night dedicated to bringing Japanese acts to the global stage. The duo performed alongside Ado and Atarashii Gakko! at the concert held in downtown L.A.

Yoasobi’s popularity likely comes from its unique and fresh concept — music based off of novels. Below, the duo speaks with The Hollywood Reporter about why their music appeals to the global audience, touring in the U.S. and how they want to be perceived.

Can you take me through your process of creating music?

Ayase We have a theme — turning novels into music,...

This Tim Burton Movie Almost Brought Ryan Reynolds & Reese Witherspoon Together Onscreen—But It Never Happened
Image
Reese Witherspoon Ryan Reynolds Missed Big Eyes Pairing (Photo Credit – Wikipedia)

Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Reynolds nearly shared the spotlight in Tim Burton’s film. However, the casting stars didn’t quite align. Long ago, the director was developing a biography that veered away from his typical eerie niche. It was titled Big Eyes. That flick told the real tale of painter Margaret Keane and her spouse, Walter.

It went through an uneven road before hitting screens in 2014, too. And along the way? It nearly featured one of the most surprising onscreen pairings ever. It was none other than Reynolds and Witherspoon. Yes, it almost occurred. But that dream duo was recast.

Reese Witherspoon Reveals Almost-Starring Role in Big Eyes

Big Eyes debuted starring Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz at the forefront. Of course,...

Get Ready for More Commercials in Movie Theaters
Image
For decades, there has been no better way for Hollywood marketers to drum up interest in their films than to play trailers for thousands of fans settled in their seats at cinemas across the country waiting for the main attraction to begin. But this age-old tradition is being disrupted by an aggressive push to sprinkle in a sampling of commercials between trailers and the regular parade of supplemental spots promoting concessions and rules of the road (as in, no texting!).

Consumers — thanks to reserved seating — are realizing there’s no need to show up at the stated showtime if the actual movie may not begin until 20 minutes to 30 minutes later.

The erosion has been years in the making. In September of 2019, not long before Covid-19 struck, Cinemark Theatres and Regal Cinemas — the country’s two largest chains behind AMC Theatres — signed a landmark deal with ad company National CineMedia to...

Iran Expert Says U.S. News Networks Get the Iranian People All Wrong
Image
Over a 50-year career in academia and foreign service, Hooshang Amirahmadi has pretty much seen it all on Iran.

The Rutgers professor, 78, founded the transnational American Iranian Council, ran the Center for Iranian Research and Analysis, visited Iran during its war with Iraq to try to bring about a resolution, has authored numerous books in English and Persian, and even submitted bids to run for president of Iran in 2005, 2013 and 2017. (The mullahs disqualified him, presumably for his American ties and pro-democracy stances.)

Amirahmadi is also deeply ensconced in the U.S., where he’s served as director of Rutgers’ Center for Middle Eastern Studies and is one of the more prominent public figures to hold both American and Iranian passports, allowing him to travel freely between the countries. He’s appeared frequently on CNN, Fox and PBS.

Given how many impressions of Iran — or misimpressions of Iran? — have been permeating...

Seen and Heard at Cannes Lions 2025: Cardi B Slays, St. Vincent Spins and NBC Boosts Its ‘Brand’ at Marketing’s Biggest Confab
Image
Cannes Lions’ 2025 conference was a starry affair in the south of France. For four days and nights, dozens of brands descended on the Croisette for hosted “beaches” that brought top names from the entertainment, sports and tech worlds.

Between panel discussions, yacht parties, concerts and even a stand-up show, an array of programs offered something for everyone — so long as you had the right wristband.

The Hollywood Reporter was on the ground for the revelry, which included standout performances by Cardi B and Lola Young for Spotify, a late-night disco soundtracked by DJ D-Nice (with Mary J. Blige in attendance to convey her appreciation for his Covid-era music sets as Curb Your Enthusiasm star Jb Smoove cheered along), the ultra-exclusive UTA-Medialink bash held at the luxe Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc and THR‘s own Marketing Power Players bash, co-hosted by the Shad Khan-owned All Elite Wrestling, aboard the Kismet superyacht.

‘Etoile’ Star Gideon Glick Talks His Biggest Challenge With the Famous Rapid-Fire Palladino Dialogue
Image
Gideon Glick is an Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino veteran, having worked with them on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, on which he had a recurring role as a peculiar magician. Therefore, he knew what to expect when it came to the rapid-fire, cadenced dialogue that the Palladinos are known for. But their new show, Étoile — set in the world of ballet, spanning across New York and Paris with its dialogue half in French, half in English — brought its own set of challenges to the theater actor, whose Broadway work includes Spring Awakening and To Kill a Mockingbird, which garnered him a Tony nomination in 2019.

“The text is always challenging because it’s meaty,” says Glick, who also starred in the TV shows Devious Maids and American Horror Story: NYC. “The experience of living in another country — granted, it was Paris — was [an added challenge] because I’m pretty deaf. I can’t hear in my right ear,...

‘The White Lotus’ Dp Breaks Down His Favorite Shot of Season 3
Image
Director of photography Ben Kutchins chose to highlight this moment from episode three of The White Lotus‘ third season — in which Walton Goggins’ Rick and Aimee Lou Wood’s Chelsea visit a Thai snake show — for its rather frightening nature: the use of real serpents. As opposed to most of the scenes shot over the course of the Max drama’s six-month production schedule, this was one of the “rare sequences that we actually storyboarded,” says Kutchins. “We were very specific about the placement of different snakes and where certain things were going to happen.”

Despite the meticulous planning, Goggins, who’s no fan of the reptile species, did get bitten. “It was harmless; it was a nonvenomous snake,” says the Dp. “He was such a committed actor, but it was so scary. He was terrified, and you can see the fear in his eyes.”

‘Good Mythical Morning’ Duo Rhett and Link Answer Five Burning Questions
Image
“Intertainment” icons Rhett and Link want your Emmy consideration and a conversation. With YouTube dominating as “the king of all media,” they’re hoping voters will notice and give the platform’s creators their flowers. Could the Good Mythical Morning episode “Are We Closer Than a Married Couple?” featuring Jason and Kylie Kelce secure them a nomination?

What‘s the biggest misconception about your content?

Link Neal Many people think it’s for kids because it’s on YouTube. We have a broad audience that has grown up with the show. They’ve gone from being under their parents’ roofs to under their own with kids. I can’t tell if the parents or the kids who are now in college are bigger fans.

Why did you pick this episode?

Rhett McLaughlin It’s a great display of our friendship, and people are showing up as the third friend. What...

‘Chimp Crazy’ Director Eric Goode on Why the Saga of Tonia Haddix Has Never Ended
Image
The four-episode saga Chimp Crazy, which in August became HBO’s most watched docuseries since 2020’s McMillions, follows Tonia Haddix, a fiercely spray-tanned Missouri animal broker who has pled guilty to multiple felony charges related to the well-being of her pet chimpanzee Tonka. By the end of the series, director Eric Goode had informed PETA that Haddix was planning to euthanize Tonka to avoid legal retribution, after which the primate was relocated to a chimp sanctuary.

Initially, Haddix was furious with Goode. He’d enlisted a proxy director while shooting some of Chimp Crazy to avoid outing himself as one of the engines behind the similar Netflix megahit Tiger King, whose principal subject, Joe Exotic, is serving a 21-year prison sentence. But Haddix also relished the attention she got from Goode’s cameras, eventually befriending him. Since August, he has counseled her to stop selling baby primates to people unprepared...

‘The Boys’ Showrunner and Stunt Coordinator on Crafting the “Ugly” (And Sometimes Nude) Supe Fights
Image
Stunt coordinator John Koyama plans out each fight scene for The Boys using cardboard, shooting a previsualization of what chaos is going to unfold.

“You use cardboard boxes as your background,” he says. “You use cardboard props. It’s a cardboard world.”

In one instance, a Tim Hortons’ coffee container became a machine gun. Showrunner Eric Kripke was so tickled by this process that it was written into an episode of the superhero show, which satirizes the world of entertainment, with “supes” — short for superheroes — rehearsing a scene alongside Koyama himself.

“It’s very cool because he paid homage to what we do in the stunt department,” Koyama says. The respect is mutual. Four seasons into the bloody Prime Video series, Kripke leans a lot on what Koyama, who goes by Koy, can come up with. In the early days, Kripke says he used to give detailed instructions on how fights should play out.

‘Incredibles 3’ Sets ‘Elemental’ Director Peter Sohn
Image
“Elemental” director Peter Sohn will direct “The Incredibles 3” for Disney and Pixar.

This installment is the first without Brad Bird at the helm. Bird wrote and directed the original 2004 adventure “The Incredibles” and its 2018 sequel “Incredibles 2.” It’s unclear why Bird is no longer directing the threequel, but the Pixar veteran will remain involved as a screenwriter and producer. Scheduling conflicts could be the culprit. Bird is developing the futuristic “Ray Gunn” for Skydance and historical drama “1906” for Disney, though the timeline on those films are hazy.

“The Incredibles” follows a superhero couple, Bob and Helen Parr, also known as Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl, who attempt to live a normal suburban life with their three children after the government pans superpowers. In the second film, the Parr family tries to restore the public’s trust in masked vigilantes as a new cybercriminal threatens mankind. The first film grossed $630 million...

Why Netflix Canceled Bloodline After Three Seasons
Image
In 2015, "Bloodline" was at the back end of the roster of those top-shelf Netflix original shows (like "House of Cards" and "Orange is the New Black") that the streaming service made primarily to impress and hook viewers. The debut season was fresh and gripping, offering the type of slow-burn family drama set in the breathtakingly dazzling Florida Keys that felt special at the time. It, perhaps, wasn't as prestigious or buzz-worthy as creators Todd A. Kessler, Glenn Kessler, and Daniel Zelman had hoped, but its quality was clearly up there with other Netflix exclusives. At the same time, its harrowing and emotionally layered story in season 1 also had the feel of a limited series, as opposed to something that could go on for years — despite the creators claiming they always planned it to be a show with potentially five or six seasons.

Along with many other viewers, I enjoyed the 2015 freshman season immensely,...
