I was an extra on this film

The punchline is - the casting agency contacted me because they knew i was a nurse.

They dressed me as a C. P. N. (Community Psychiatric Nurse), or Social Worker. I waa actually working as a C. P. N. At the time.

I didn't recognize the portrayal of community and hospital mental health services as shown in the film.

However it was apparently supposed to be set in 80's or something. My big moment was walking into the big Psychiatric hospital, down a long corridor while Ms. Maxwell Martin was coming from the other end of the corridor. I couldn't help but let on to her as she approached. This was because, everyone around these units etc, is very friendly and positive in my experience. The atmosphere has to be positive and recovery oriented or it would be unbearable for both service users and staff.

Maybe Ms. Martin thought i was trying to 'corpse' her. Anyway they only ran through it once and i was consigned to the cutting room floor.

Us extras spent the whole day just sat around and my impression was of an unhappy set and crew with an overbearing and unpopular Director.

    Sniffs and Dribblers

Following her mother's suicide, N has been in and out of care most of her life, from foster care, through 'children looked after' services to mental health inpatient and outpatient services. Resolutely determined to remain an outpatient at a mental health day centre, her day-to-day existence is challenged by a new patient, Poppy Shakespeare... whilst all other outpatients are hell-bent on avoiding discharge, Poppy wants nothing else.

Skirting the line between stark realism and the heightened, farcical world of, say, Lindsay Anderson, Ross and Williams' film is a roller-coaster ride through a dystopian mental health care system in 21st century Britain. By not being explicit about the reasons for Poppy's apparently enforced attendance at the day centre, the cause and effect of mental illness diagnosis is blurred. By heightening the depiction of the care givers and mental health professionals to exaggerated, satirical degrees, the cycle of discharge-collapse-readmission-rehabilitation is distorted to nightmarish proportions.

Naomie Harris is great in the title role, charting the slow, distressing decline of someone determined to fight the system, but at the heart of Poppy Shakespeare lies an astonishing performance by Anna Maxwell Martin as N - she doesn't so much play her as 'be' her, creating a character so utterly believable and compelling that the viewer is both repelled and mesmerized in equal measure as we watch N deftly circumnavigate the system, always to her own advantage, always ensuring she remains within it.

Kudos and applause for all involved.

    • Trivia
A study by American Psychologist Rosenhan "On being sane in insane places" demonstrated that psychiatrists cannot reliably distinguish between people with a genuine mental illness and people pretending to have one. Rosenhan sent accomplices to Hospitals, all with the instruction that they complain of one symptom, hearing the word "Thump". All were institutionalized and labeled as being sufferers of a variety of conditions "in remission" upon their discharge. There was much fury from the psychiatric establishment when these results were made public. One psychiatrist challenged Rosenhan to send accomplices again, confident that he could spot them. Rosenhan agreed, and some time later the psychiatrist proudly contacted Rosenhan in the belief that he had found them all, to which Rosenhan responded that he hadn't sent a single one that time. Rosenhans' term for persons in a situation of being mistaken for insane was "pseudopatient"and the subtext of his study is that any social faux pas, intentional or not, could be misinterpreted as a psychiatric symptom by a psychiatrist.
