Since the original Die Hard took the world by storm in 1988, it has inspired countless sequels and knock-offs. Often built around the same basic premise, these films have become a sub-genre in their own right. From Die Hard 2: Die Harder set in an airport, to Under Siege on a naval vessel, Passenger 57 on a plane, and even Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down in the White House, the formula has been repeated in various locations, with a lone hero taking on the bad guys and saving the hostages.

The Dcu is set to explore a variety of heroes and villains in upcoming movies, games and TV shows, but an unexpected team-up also appears to be in the works in the form of a Bane and Deathstroke movie. While the Dceu has officially been retired, and Warner Bros. is getting prepared to launch their new Dcu under the watchful eye of James Gunn and Peter Safran, the list of projects confirmed remains fairly small. Ahead of the Dcu's debut in theaters with Superman coming in 2025, there are a handful of shows set in the Dcu and it's accompanying Elseworlds.
Beyond that, the Dcu is expected to introduce many of the biggest players from DC's Justice League over the course of the next few years, but there will also be a number of villains who get a chance to take the spotlight. In fact, after a recent tease from James...

Two of Batman’s most popular foes, Bane and Deathstroke, are set to share the screen as Warner Bros’ new look DC Universe continues to take shape.
Both Bane and Deathstroke have graced cinema screens before. When it comes to the comic books, the duo are among the more beloved members of Batman’s colourful cast of villains, and it looks like that popularity has led to a supervillain team-up movie that will introduce the characters to James Gunn’s all-new DC Universe.
Next year will see Warner Bros’ new line of DC movies kick off with Superman: Legacy, written and directed by Gunn himself. Following that, a string of films have been announced including a Batman movie, The Brave And The Bold and Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow. Then there are planned TV shows such as HBO’s Lanterns, a space cop series that will feature the Green Lantern corps.

With the HBO series The Penguin and the upcoming sequel Joker: Folie a Deux already earning rave reviews, DC Studios doesn’t look to be done focusing on Batman bad guys. Sources confirm to Deadline that the studio is in early development on a new movie involving classic Gotham villains Bane and Deathstroke. Matthew Orton has been set to pen the script, with DC Studio co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran producing.
No director is attached, and the studio had no comment.
Exact plot details are still uncertain and sources also stressed the two characters would be in the movie but it’s unclear if they would be the central figures of the project.
Both characters are beloved to fans of the comics, with Bane especially gaining popularity over the years after Christopher Nolan made him the main antagonist in The Dark Knight Rises, with Tom Hardy playing the main role.

With a big-budget Joker movie just weeks away and a Penguin HBO series freshly unveiled, a few other DC villains are being targeted for the spotlight.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Bane, the super-steroid injecting antagonist who was previously seen in the 2012 Christopher Nolan movie The Dark Knight Rises, and Deathstroke, another popular archnemesis in the comic book company’s fold, are being lassoed together for a movie. The James Gunn and Peter Safran-led DC Studios is developing a script from Matthew Orton, a scribe on the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World movie.
There is no director on the project.

Devil’s Peak, directed by Matthew Orton, dives into the tricky question: How do we know who the villain is? On the outside, it’s easy to see someone who kills as a bad guy. But, sometimes, their hidden motives tell a different story. Take Thobela Mpayipheli, also known as “The Hunter.” He goes after people who have hurt children, taking justice into his own hands. Why? Because Mpayipheli knows that if he leaves it up to the police or the courts, the system will protect the wealthy and powerful white people, not the oppressed black community. So, Mpayipheli decides to take matters into his own hands, one criminal at a time. But, of course, this puts him on the police radar. Detective Benjamin Griessel, who’s battling his own demons with alcoholism and family issues, is the one chasing him down. The question is, can Benny catch a man who some see as a hero,...

With reshoots ongoing on Marvel Studios' Captain America: Brave New World, a ton of new set photos have been surfacing online over the past few days and the latest batch reveals star Anthony Mackie ("Sam Wilson/Captain America") suited up in his classic white-and-blue suit from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, essentially reaffirming that he'll be sporting multiple looks in the eagerly-awaited Marvel blockbuster.
As per a recent report, the additional photography isn't expected to be particularly extensive, and should conclude within another week or two. New action sequences were expected to be added, so based on what we're seeing in these photos, it looks like they might be shooting a new opening for the film, where Mackie sports his first Captain America suit.
He'll also wear a wingless blue-and-red suit in the film, something not too dissimilar from Steve Rogers' stealth suit, but it's not yet clear what...

In the realm of upcoming Marvel projects, many faced delays due to the historic 118-day SAG-AFTRA strike that recently concluded, disrupting Hollywood productions. Amidst these challenges, the fourth installment in the Captain America series, ‘Captain America: Brave New World,’ encountered issues not directly linked to the strike.
Initially, the film swapped release dates with ‘Deadpool 3’ as it was only halfway through production when the strike hit. Rumors later circulated about additional reshoots prompted by less-than-satisfactory test screenings and underwhelming action sequences compared to previous series entries.
Marvel Studios has now enlisted screenwriter Matthew Orton, according to Deadline, known for his work on ‘Operation Finale,’ ‘Devil’s Peak,’ and the successful Disney+ series ‘Moon Knight,’ to handle the reshoots. The additional round is scheduled for spring-summer 2024. Despite the setback, ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ won’t hit screens in 2024; its release was pushed to February 14, 2025, pending successful reshoots.

In a sea of upcoming projects based on Marvel characters, several of them have been severely delayed and affected by the historic SAG-AFTRA strike that only recently ended after paralyzing productions in Hollywood for 118 days. But, one MCU project seemingly had problems that weren’t so directly connected to the strike, the upcoming fourth installment in the Captain America series.
‘Captain America: Brave New World’ initially switched release dates with ‘Deadpool 3’ since the movie was only halfway done when the strike began. But then rumors resurfaced that ‘Captain America’ is undergoing another round of reshoots, allegedly due to test screenings being less than satisfactory. More recently, additional details resurfaced that, apparently, action filmed so far was underwhelming when compared to previous installments in the series.

Marvel Studios has added screenwriter Matthew Orton to the production of “Captain America: Brave New World,” ahead of the superhero sequel’s plans for additional photography sometime in the spring.
The Walt Disney Company announced a series of delays to its theatrical release slate shortly after the conclusion of the SAG-AFTRA strike. Along with “Deadpool 3,” “Thunderbolts” and “Blade,” “Brave New World” was among the group of Marvel productions impacted, moving from a July 26, 2024 date to Feb. 14, 2025. That’s almost seven more months for the studio to work on the fourth “Captain America” film, which had already completed principal photography prior to the actors strike. Reshoots are a commonplace practice for blockbuster tentpoles, particularly Marvel productions.
Orton’s previous credits include the World War II thriller “Operation Finale” and TV work on “Devil’s Peak” and Marvel’s Disney+ series “Moon Knight.” Dalan Musson and Malcolm Spellman have screenplay credits...

Shrooms. This year’s edition of TIFF Wavelengths opened with an unannounced extra. It was a 1967 film called Standard Time, an eight-minute series of circular pans around an apartment. The camera speeds up and slows down; it pans right, then left, then right again. Later, the film describes a truncated arc, showing one small section of the flat. Then, the camera pans up and down. Living beings can be glimpsed along the way, most notably a cat perched in a window, artist Joyce Wieland, and a surprise visitor at the end. But they are given the same relative attention as the objects in the space: a TV, a stereo, a cooktop, a blender, and a hutch full of china. Which is to say that all things in the field of the camera’s vision are abstracted, turned into pure painterly velocity.Of course, Standard Time is by Michael Snow, a...

Master Gardener has a small, but well-known cast. The film, written and directed by Paul Schrader, had its premiere at the 2022 Venice Film Festival. It’s finally being released in theaters, and it brings with it the talents of the cast, led by Joel Edgerton in the titular role.
Master Gardener follows the title character as he works to be redeemed for his past crimes, mentors a young woman, and keeps his head down as he appreciates the land that he cultivates on a daily basis. Ahead of the film’s release, it received mostly positive reviews from critics. Schrader gathered a good cast to star in the movie, a mixture of famous actors and others who are lesser-known. With Edgerton in the lead role, he’s surrounded by a capable supporting cast that brings Schrader’s story to life.

Hopper Penn, the son of actors Sean Penn and Robin Wright, is weighing in on the nepo baby discourse to say that he isn’t one, and that he doesn’t care if people think he is.
“I don’t give a s— about that, because I’m not one,” Penn told Yahoo! Entertainment when asked if he was concerned with being labeled as a “nepo baby,” a term implying that some children of celebrities are only successful because of their famous parent’s nepotism.
Penn, who stars in “Devil’s Peak” alongside his mother, recalled discussing the topic while on set for “Let Me Go the Right Way,” a 2022 short film that critics tagged as a “nepotism film” due to its involvement with director Destry Allyn Spielberg, the daughter of Steven Spielberg, and writer Owen King, the son of Stephen King.
“It came up when we were shooting,” Penn said.

Hopper Penn is an actor with famous parents but says he’s not a “nepo baby” and he doesn’t care what people think of him.
The son of actor Sean Penn and House of Cards star Robin Wright is rejecting any notion that he is a “nepo baby,” the kids of famous parents. Penn stars in Devil’s Peak with his mother and during a recent interview opened up about what he thinks of the infamous label.
“I don’t give a s*** about that, because I’m not one,” Penn told Yahoo! Entertainment.
Penn recalled the time he worked on Let Me Go the Right Away, a film directed by Steven Spielberg’s daughter Destry and written by Stephen King’s son Owen.
“It came up when we were shooting,” Penn said. “Destry had shown me an article calling it a ‘nepotism film’ and I just laughed about it.

The dynamics between fathers and sons, and whether the younger generation can ever escape the family legacy, is at the heart of “Devil’s Peak.” It’s apt then that director Ben Young cast Hopper Penn — son of Sean — as his lead. In this adaptation of David Joy’s novel “Where All Light Tends to Go,” the father, Charlie (Billy Bob Thornton), is a drug lord in North Carolina’s Appalachian Mountains, with a firm grip on his son’s life and livelihood. Jacob (Penn) works as a runner for his dad, while the latter withholds his wages, thus totally controlling his son. Young and screenwriter Robert Knott build on these intriguing family dynamics to create an entertaining drama that’s unfortunately let down by its lead performance.
The conflict between father and son takes hold when Jacob falls for a local woman (Katelyn Nacon) at the same time that Charlie...

Billy Bob Thornton in Devil’s Peak Photo: Screen Media Films The right cast can make a plodding film watchable, an Ok film good, and a good film great. One reason actors like Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep are so beloved, for instance, is because they can elevate something that’s otherwise predictable and bland.
