The White House Correspondents’ Dinner “is going to feel a little different this year,” the organization’s president acknowledged Saturday at the outset of the annual gathering of the White House press corps.

Eugene Daniels, White House Correspondents Assn. president who is soon to become an anchor for MSNBC, opened the event at the Washington Hilton Hotel with an acknowledgement that the Whca has had a bumpy ride to this year’s event.

“There’s no president, there’s no comedian, it’s just an intense focus on our fabulous scholarship students,” he said. “Just a celebration of all of you — thousands of people with a shared commitment to the First Amendment.”

The Whca typically has a prominent comedian deliver roast-y remarks about the president. This year, the Whca tapped Amber Ruffin for the gig in February but then disinvited her after complaints from conservatives about her sharp criticisms of Trump and the Maga movement.

MSNBC’s new nighttime lineup will debut the week of May 5, with the 7 p.m. Et show The Weeknight starting that evening and Jen Psaki’s 9 p.m. Et show The Briefing launching the following night.

The schedule also marks the end of Rachel Maddow’s return to a five-night-a-week schedule, as she has been doing for the first 100 days of the Trump administration. She’s announced a series of personal appearances in May for her book, Prequel: An American Fight Against Fascism.

The Weeknight will feature Symone Sanders Townsend, Michael Steele and Alicia Menendez, the trio who have hosted the network’s Saturday and Sunday morning show The Weekend. At 7 p.m., it replaces ReidOut, which was canceled earlier this year and whose host, Joy Reid, left the network. The Weeknight will run for two hours on Monday and for an hour the rest of the week.

Comcast’s cable news channel MSNBC has hired Scott Matthews to serve as its Senior Vice President of Newsgathering, and the channel has grander ambitions to rebuild its editorial operations with the future hiring of more than 100 journalists.

“Scott’s new role reflects our plans to build out MSNBC’s domestic, Washington and international newsgathering operations and expand our presence in the field,” Rebecca Kutler, the President of MSNBC, said in a memo to employees on Thursday. He starts at the network on March 17.

Matthews comes to MSNBC from Wabc-tv (Channel 7), the ABC-owned station in New York City that regularly tops the local news ratings. Joy Reid’s firing from MSNBC leaked to the press before her staff was notified, forcing network chief Rebecca Kutler to call an impromptu meeting filled with “pointed questions” and “raw emotions,” media journalist Oliver Darcy reported Sunday.

According to Darcy’s Status newsletter, staffers “expressed frustration and disbelief, outraged that they had learned of their show’s fate from reports in the press rather than from leadership. Others demanded answers about the reasoning behind the cancellation of ‘The ReidOut’ and what it meant for their futures at the network.”

They got their answer: “The meeting, which lasted nearly 30 minutes, featured pointed questions, raw emotions, and a discussion of the changes ahead” — including the revelation that the entire staff would be laid off, Darcy writes. Scripps in early 2023 combined its live-streaming Newsy outlet with its local-news operations and its Washington bureau to create Scripps News, which distributed national news programming across the company’s local stations and via streaming outlets.

The layoffs are to be completed by November 15.

The three major record labels Universal Music Group, Sony Music, and Warner Music Group have filed lawsuits against AI start-up companies Suno and Udio alleging copyright infringement.

Brought forth by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the lawsuits claim Suno and Udio used the labels’ recordings to train their AI models without permission “at an almost unimaginable scale.”

Both Suno and Udio allow users to create original songs based on text prompts, generating a combination of lyrics, vocals, and instrumentals. Notably, the latter was used to create the viral hit “Bbl Drizzy.”

The lawsuits note that songs generated by Suno and Udio sound just like Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” The Beach Boys’ “I Get Around,” Abba’s “Dancing Queen,” The Temptations’ “My Girl,” and Green Day’s “American Idiot,” among others. Bruce Springsteen and Michael Jackson’s voices were also cited as examples of copyright infringement.

Netflix‘s Man on Fire is ready to turn up the heat with Yahya Abdul-Matten II as its lead. In addition to his starring role, Abdul-Mateen II is an executive producer of the project, with Steven Caple Jr. directing the first two episodes. A.J. Quinnell’s first two novels, “Man on Fire” and “The Perfect Kill,” inspired the episodic adaptation focusing on French Foreign Legion soldier John Creasy.

Denzel Washington played John W. Creasy in the Tony Scott-directed feature adaptation Man on Fire. Christopher Walken, Dakota Fanning, Radha Mitchell, and Marc Anthony round out the primary cast. The plot focuses on a former CIA operative who swears vengeance on those who committed an unspeakable act against the family he was hired to protect.

Exclusive: Shooting is underway on Son of the Soil, a thriller from Action Xtreme out of Nigeria.

Conceived by Action Xtreme CEO Chee Keong Cheung, who directs and produces, the film follows former former Nigerian soldier Zion Ladejo, tortured by his past, who is forced to return to Nigeria following the tragic and untimely death of his sister. Determined to find those responsible, he embarks on a campaign of vengeance and in the process seeks redemption for his past actions.

It is being shot entirely on location in Lagos, Nigeria.

British-Nigerian actor Raz Adoti has written the script, takes on the lead role and is also producing.
