The White House Correspondents’ Dinner “is going to feel a little different this year,” the organization’s president acknowledged Saturday at the outset of the annual gathering of the White House press corps.
Eugene Daniels, White House Correspondents Assn. president who is soon to become an anchor for MSNBC, opened the event at the Washington Hilton Hotel with an acknowledgement that the Whca has had a bumpy ride to this year’s event.
“There’s no president, there’s no comedian, it’s just an intense focus on our fabulous scholarship students,” he said. “Just a celebration of all of you — thousands of people with a shared commitment to the First Amendment.”
The Whca typically has a prominent comedian deliver roast-y remarks about the president. This year, the Whca tapped Amber Ruffin for the gig in February but then disinvited her after complaints from conservatives about her sharp criticisms of Trump and the Maga movement.

MSNBC’s new Saturday and Sunday primetime panel, “The Weekend,” won’t kick off until later this month, but the show’s four hosts just got their first chance to chew over their plans.
At first glance, Ayman Mohyeldin, Elise Jordan, Catherine Rampell and Antonia Hylton don’t seem to have too much in common. Each has a distinctive background that is unlike the others. Hylton gained traction working for upstart news outlets including Mic and Vice.com before joining NBCUniversal. Rampell has made a name for herself not only for economic analysis at The Washington Post but also as a frequent talk-show contributor to everything from CNN’s “News Night” to HBO’s “Real Time.” Mohyeldin first began to emerge at NBC News delivering reports last decade from the Middle East. And Jordan has worked for Senator Rand Paul and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

The largely corporate crowd at CinemaCon, rocking credential lanyards and jeans and button-ups, got to live the Sin City fantasy on Tuesday morning with a surprise performance from The Weeknd.
The top-selling artist thrilled the Colosseum theater at Las Vegas’ Caesars Palace during a presentation for Lionsgate, the distributor releasing his upcoming film “Hurry Up Tomorrow.” The Grammy winner performed two songs: an original from the new project and “Blinded by the Light.”
Introduced by Lionsgate motion picture group chief Adam Fogelson — who gave audience members with epilepsy a heads-up before the flashing lights began — The Weekend was cheered on by his film’s star Jenna Ortega and director Trey Edward Shults.
The annual convention of movie theater owners is not the typical audience The Weekend, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, is used to performing for. He spotted a “Star Wars” icon in the front row as he was belting his hits.

Comcast’s cable news channel MSNBC has hired Scott Matthews to serve as its Senior Vice President of Newsgathering, and the channel has grander ambitions to rebuild its editorial operations with the future hiring of more than 100 journalists.

Joy Reid’s firing from MSNBC leaked to the press before her staff was notified, forcing network chief Rebecca Kutler to call an impromptu meeting filled with “pointed questions” and “raw emotions,” media journalist Oliver Darcy reported Sunday.
According to Darcy’s Status newsletter, staffers “expressed frustration and disbelief, outraged that they had learned of their show’s fate from reports in the press rather than from leadership. Others demanded answers about the reasoning behind the cancellation of ‘The ReidOut’ and what it meant for their futures at the network.”
They got their answer: “The meeting, which lasted nearly 30 minutes, featured pointed questions, raw emotions, and a discussion of the changes ahead” — including the revelation that the entire staff would be laid off, Darcy writes. Rebecca Kutler, who was named president of MSNBC earlier in February, is considering expanding the on-screen presence of Jen Psaki, who currently anchors hours on Sunday afternoons and Monday evenings, as well as the trio of personalities who lead “The Weekend,” the roundtable show that airs Saturday and Sunday mornings and is led by Symone Sanders-Townsend, Alicia Menendez and Michael Steele, according to two people familiar with the discussions.
MSNBC declined to make Kutler available for comment. Puck previously reported discussions around the aforementioned personnel moves.
The changes, none of which have been formally announced, show Kutler moving quickly to steer MSNBC in a tricky moment. With Comcast splitting off the bulk of its cable assets into a separate,...

Lily-Rose Depp is standing up for Sam Levinson and their collaboration on HBO’s “The Idol.”
During an appearance on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Depp defended Levinson against the backlash for his one-season HBO drama “The Idol,” which was panned by critics and viewers alike. Depp, who starred in the series as up-and-coming pop star Jocelyn, said Levinson “always knew it was going to be controversial” but carried on since he is “interested in that kind of work.”
“I think the thing that sucked about that was to have people talking shit about Sam [Levinson], who is a great friend of mine and somebody that I consider family,” Depp said. “I’m super close with him and Ashley — his wife who’s a producer on the show — and they are such wonderful people, so incredible, so kind, and really kind of took me under their wing in a way.”

We recently learned that Abel Tesfaye, a.k.a. the pop star known as The Weeknd, is making his feature film debut alongside Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan in Hurry Up Tomorrow. The simultaneous release of both Wicked and Gladiator II at the box office in November 2024 has proven to be the cinematic event of the year. "Glicked" is rivaling last year's "Barbenheimer" phenomenon with two entirely different projects finding immense success in different ways. The two films have been endlessly compared thanks to their same-day release, although the projects themselves couldn't be more dissimilar. However, the box office figures of Wicked and Gladiator II have already proven a "winner" of sorts.
Both Wicked and Gladiator II were hugely anticipated releases, the former because of how widely beloved the original Broadway production is, the latter because of how critically acclaimed its Academy Award-winning predecessor was. They both had precedents to live up to, and while one has found more commercial success than the other, it's hard to deny that either project hasn't lived up to the huge expectations placed upon it. Joy Reid got the call while she was waiting in a restaurant at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to get on a plane to Paris. Nicolle Wallace received a summons, she remembers, when “I was in the middle of nowhere with my son and had no makeup.” To respond to similar requests, says Rachel Maddow, “I have made illegal U-turns on the state highway.”
When “The Avengers” are needed, no one can ignore the alert.
Reid, Wallace and Maddow look nothing like Iron Man, Captain America, Thor or any of the other super-powered characters who populate the well-watched Marvel films from Disney. And yet, on MSNBC, where each anchors her own program, they are part of an assemblage that is being convened with greater frequency.
“When there’s a moment,” says Rashida Jones, MSNBC’s president, the network likes to “bring the team together and elevate the seriousness of the news.

Scripps is backing out of a ambitious effort to offer national news across its many TV stations, and its reasons for doing so may give rivals the shudders.
The Cincinnati owner of TV stations and national networks like Ion told staffers Friday that it plans to shutter the national news programming produced by its Scripps News unit, resulting in what are expected to be 200 job cuts. Scripps in early 2023 combined its live-streaming Newsy outlet with its local-news operations and its Washington bureau to create Scripps News, which distributed national news programming across the company’s local stations and via streaming outlets.
The layoffs are to be completed by November 15.
The company found less-than-robust support for the venture from Madison Avenue, according to Adam Symons, Scripps’ CEO. “Amidst an already difficult linear television advertising marketplace, many brands and agencies have decided that advertising around national news is just too risky for...

The three major record labels Universal Music Group, Sony Music, and Warner Music Group have filed lawsuits against AI start-up companies Suno and Udio alleging copyright infringement.
Brought forth by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the lawsuits claim Suno and Udio used the labels’ recordings to train their AI models without permission “at an almost unimaginable scale.”
Both Suno and Udio allow users to create original songs based on text prompts, generating a combination of lyrics, vocals, and instrumentals. Notably, the latter was used to create the viral hit “Bbl Drizzy.”
The lawsuits note that songs generated by Suno and Udio sound just like Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” The Beach Boys’ “I Get Around,” Abba’s “Dancing Queen,” The Temptations’ “My Girl,” and Green Day’s “American Idiot,” among others. Bruce Springsteen and Michael Jackson’s voices were also cited as examples of copyright infringement.
