This is a very touching and fascinating look at the financial and emotional aspects associated with trying to get pregnant outside of the traditional method of a male/female relationship. It tells of the difficulties faced by women that are single or homosexual that want a child. Most are well into their 30's and have decided to take matters of conception into their own hands rather than wait for that perfect mate. The film gives you a strong sense of the urgency these women feel as they approach or cross into their 40's and are mate-less and childless. They are so determined and passionate about having a baby that they will spend thousands of dollars and untold hours of anxiety hoping to get pregnant by donor sperm or even donor eggs. What you come to understand is how strong the instinctive urge of women to mother is and what lengths they'll go to satisfy that need. I enjoyed the multiple stories being told and the varying personalities of the women involved. They're all real and you share in the emotional roller-coaster they ride as you follow their stories. Great job!
A well told sensitively handled documentary about a group of single women looking to have a baby. Their choices are complicated, uncertain, expensive and filled with a lot of high tech science. The remarkable thing is that Ms. O'Rourke manages to keep everything on a human and heart-filled level. The characters were well chosen - especially "Betsy" and her parents who come to represent all parents with their initial disapproval of their daughter's decision to use donor sperm and artificial insemination as her method for achieving motherhood. The scene with her mom practicing with a blanket wrapped doll is priceless. Another emotionally wrenching storyline is that of the lesbian couple who, after all options are exhausted are turned down by a fertility clinic because of their sexual orientation. The stories are expertly woven throughout and I challenge any man or women to watch this through with a dry eye.
