We’re still a year away from the next Avengers team-up, but the movie is quickly coming together.

With a major cast reveal announcing the start of production on the film, Marvel fans are excited to get back to event films from the franchise. But it’s been a long road to get here, and as we mentioned, we still have a ways to go; it can be hard keeping all the details of the film sorted in your memory.

At around 3pm yesterday (26th March), Marvel began one of the weirdest pieces of film marketing this writer has seen in many years. To mark the beginning of Avengers: Doomsday’s production, the studio began to stream what was essentially an outsized teaser trailer.

You may have seen at least snippets of it by now: the scene opens on a dimly lit soundstage. In the foreground: a director’s chair with Chris Hemsworth’s name emblazoned on the back. The camera lingers on the chair for at least 12 agonising minutes before – get this...

Alright, folks, let’s address the radioactive spider in the room, where is Tom Holland in Avengers: Doomsday? You’d think that after swinging through half of New York, saving the multiverse with Doctor Strange, and getting dusted by Thanos and then undusted, he’d at least get a call for another round of superhero mayhem. Marvel inundated social media on Wednesday with the cast announcement for its 2026 tentpole “Avengers: Doomsday.” Over more than five hours, the oversized superhero squad generated constant buzz (and memes) as viewers patiently watched a livestream that slowly revealed cast members’ names on the backs of director’s chairs.

It was the first official information on who will headline the first of a two-part finale to the MCU’s Multiverse Saga, and Marvel pulled out all the stops. It seems like just about everyone in Kevin Feige’s rolodex is on the call sheet. Stars from “Captain America,” “Black Panther,” “Thor” and “Ant-Man” are on the list, plus some upcoming franchise hopefuls from “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” and “Thunderbolts*.” But can “Doomsday” reach the $2.79 billion box-office heights of “Endgame”?

At 11 a.m. this morning, the Marvel Studios social media accounts started live-streaming a video they labeled as an all-caps Announcement. The video showed a soundstage where, one by one, chairs reserved for actors were revealed, with a new chair coming into view every 10 minutes or so. As it turns out, this was a very long and slow way of revealing the star-studded cast of Avengers: Doomsday, which is now heading into production and aiming for a May 1, 2026 theatrical release.

The first chair belonged to Chris Hemsworth, who has played Thor, the God of Thunder, in Thor, The Avengers, Thor: The Dark World, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Doctor Strange, Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Thor: Love and Thunder. The second chair was reserved for Vanessa Kirby, who plays Susan Storm (a.k.a. Invisible Woman) in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which will be reaching theatres on July 25th.

2023 was quite a tumultuous year for the MCU, both on and off-screen. While on one front, Ant-Man 3, which was marketed as Kang the Conqueror’s big introduction in the multiversal saga, heavily underperformed, the MCU also had to cancel the Kang storyline following Jonathan Majors’ conviction.

Captain America: Brave New World passed $400 million at the worldwide box office this weekend, and it's likely somewhere around there it will end its run in theaters.

Another feature that picks up with characters who have either appeared in supporting roles or primarily on Disney+, it's hard to say whether it will appeal to moviegoers struggling with superhero - and general blockbuster - fatigue.

As of March 17, 2025, Captain America: Brave New World has earned $185,396,912 domestically (via Box Office Mojo), officially surpassing Ant-Man's $180.2 million, Thor's $181 million, and Black Widow's $183.6 million. Good thing “Novocaine” can’t feel pain, because this one hurts. Paramount’s “Novocaine” hit No. 1 at the domestic box office this weekend despite grossing just $8.7 million. That’s the lowest total for a movie to top the box office this year in a given weekend, and it led a dismally weak weekend on the whole at the domestic box office, in which the Top 10 earned just a cumulative $45.2 million, the worst of 2025 thus far.

It will come as a surprise to no one that the box office has been bleak since the pandemic, but you don’t even have to go back that far to find a weekend that had a worse No. 1. This weekend, it added $5.5 million in the U.S. ($185.4 million total) and $6 million internationally ($203.2 million total) for a global cume of $388.6 million.

At this rate, it will just about manage to cross $400 million worldwide by the end of its run. While it's good that The Falcon and The Winter Soldier follow-up has topped disasters like The Marvels ($207 million) and The Incredible Hulk ($264 million), it's still set to land in "disappointment" territory alongside Eternals ($402 million) and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ($476 million).

There are those quick to blame "superhero fatigue" but it's not just Marvel Studios struggling to convince moviegoers to buy a theater ticket.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania leading man Paul Rudd touched upon Ant-Man return chances. This comes as Avengers: Doomsday reportedly prepares to start production this month.

Rudd brought this subject up in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, conveying, "We will see, I don't know. I mean, that suit is… I feel like I should never be too far from the suit in case they call, but you never know. They know where I'm at." Tying into this, Rudd delved into the possibility of another Ant-Man standalone film in 2024, avowing at the time, "I have no idea. I don't know. Yeah, that's not for me to answer, you'd have to go to Kevin Feige and those guys, I guess."

As reported by The Numbers, Captain America 4 has broken through on the All-Time Domestic Box Office for Action Movies chart. Jonathan Majors had his entire career derailed when allegations of assault and harassment were brought against him by his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari. Following the trial and his conviction on account of reckless assault in the 3rd degree and a charge of harassment as a violation, the actor was dropped from many of his projects and roles, the biggest of it being his role of Kang the Conqueror in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Avengers: Doomsday is currently in pre-production and is reportedly set to become one of the most expensive MCU films in the multiverse saga. Doomsday will be the fifth film in the Avengers franchise, directed by the Russo brothers, Anthony Russo and Joe Russo. Apart from Rdj, none of the cast members have been confirmed yet. Production will reportedly begin in April this year in London. The third sequel to Ant-Man 3 was a box office failure, making only $476.07 million worldwide.

According to a new MCU report, Avengers: Doomsday's pre-production costs have already tripled those of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and they're expected to keep rising. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has been one of the biggest box office bombs in the McU's history, partly because it only gathered $476 million worldwide, but also in part because Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania's budget reached a staggering $388 million. It’s been almost two years since Jonathan Majors was fired as Marvel’s Kang the Conquerer, and now, the actor might be looking to make a superhero comeback. Yet, instead of pursuing the “big guys” like DC or his former employer Marvel, Majors said his next superhero turn could come outside those studio-affiliated heavyhitters.

Majors, who was poised to be the next lead villain of the Marvel franchise before being found guilty of one count of misdemeanor third-degree assault and one count of second-degree harassment of his ex-girlfriend in 2023, told The Hollywood Reporter that he is considering a role in another superhero film.

“[There is] no relation to the big guys, DC or Marvel, but [it’s] a pretty wicked story,” Majors said of the project. “I’m glad to be reading.”

Inside the hushed car, a member of his legal team turned around from the front seat and delivered the next piece of news. “He goes, ‘I’m just gonna tell you now,’” Majors says. “That way you’re not surprised, and you can start processing it. They fired you. Marvel fired you.’”

Before his arrest that March, Majors was fresh off the Warner Bros. box office hit Creed III, the Marvel movie Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and an Emmy nomination for the HBO series Lovecraft Country.

Paul Rudd spoke about the potential that he will return to his MCU role following Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania's disappointing run.

Rudd appeared as Scott Lang (aka Ant-Man) in six Marvel Studios movies to date, most recently voicing his character in What If...? Season 2.

Jack Quaid-led action comedy “Novocaine” will vie with last weekend’s champion “Mickey 17” for the top spot on box office charts.

Based on projections, “Novocaine” should lead the way with $10 million to $12 million from 3,300 North American theaters in its first weekend of release. The film, from Paramount Pictures, cost $18 million. In “Novocaine,” Quaid plays an introverted everyman with the inability to feel pain, which he uses to his advantage after his dream girl is taken hostage in a bank robbery.

Those ticket sales should be enough to topple “Mickey 17,” which is expected to decline by 55% to 60% from its $19 million debut, putting second-weekend revenues around $8 million to $9 million. So far, the dystopian sci-fi comedy from Bong Joon Ho and Robert Pattinson has generated $20.5 million domestically and $54 million globally. Those grosses aren’t bad for an original, offbeat film in this theatrical landscape — except that “Mickey 17” cost $118 million...

From world-changing snaps to jaw-dropping debuts, the Marvel Cinematic Universe delivers magical moments. The storylines aside, none of it would matter without the characters -- the heroes and rogues -- but woof, the worst MCU villains don't do the franchise any favors. Captain America: Brave New World has, so far, made $176.6 million in the U.S. and Canada, and $194.6 million in other countries, for a total of $371.2 million worldwide. The movie needed to earn $425 million to break even, considering its $180 million production cost and marketing expenses.

In its opening weekend, the film made $88.5 million, topping the box office. However, in its second weekend, it saw a big drop, earning only $28.2 million, which was a 68% decrease—one of the worst drops in MCU history behind Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania (69% drop) and The Marvels (78% drop).

The movie did well internationally, earning $92.4 million from 52 countries, with China, the UK, Mexico, Korea, and France being the top markets.

In its third weekend, the film made just $15 million in the U.S., dropping nearly 50% from the previous weekend. The most recent numbers are grim, the film earned just $8.3 million in its fourth weekend, marking a 44% drop compared to its third weekend.

Warner Bros.’ “Mickey 17” doesn’t look like it will blast off at the box office, earning an opening weekend of $19.1 million from 3,807 locations as it faces a long road to recouping its nine-digit production budget.

Greenlit in January 2022 under previous Warner film chairman Toby Emmerich, “Mickey 17” is acclaimed director Bong Joon-ho’s follow-up to his Best Picture Oscar winner “Parasite” and carries a reported production budget of $118 million.

Reception for the film has been generally positive with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 79% critics and 73% audience to go with a B on CinemaScore. But it remains to be seen whether that good-but-not-great word of mouth will be enough to give “Mickey 17” the legs to be theatrically profitable, especially with Paramount’s “Novocaine” being released next week with a relatively more accessible form of the gory action thrills that “Mickey 17” offers along with Bong’s brand of biting satire.
