From riveting detective series to stirring crime dramas to thrilling plots about unruly outlaws, the theme of crime in anime comes in many different forms and configurations. Nonetheless, it’s impossible to deny that, whether one wants to see lawbreakers wreak havoc or get punished for their wrongdoings, crime anime has a tantalizing appeal.
The crime anime subgenre is hardly homogenous — commonly, it goes hand-in-hand with mystery and suspense, yet just as frequently combines with other classic anime themes, like science fiction, fantasy, and action-adventure. What brings these multifaceted series together is the exhilaration of their enigmas and unpredictable plots that tackle the darkest, most conniving deeds unraveling on the wrong side of the law. These anime series approach the crime theme in a divergent plentitude of ways — yet all of them do so faultlessly.

As we mentioned a number of times recently, the relatively new trend of anime not being based on manga is truly picking up, as it includes many great titles, as in the case of “Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s Song” and “ID: Invaded”, among others. Studio Mappa’s “Zombie Land Saga” is another of those titles, especially in the way it combines the concept of idols with drama and comedy.

“When I open my eyes, I find myself in an unfamiliar car, in an unfamiliar town, in front of the on-ramp to an unfamiliar highway. Before I can process any of this, I see the fiery explosions of multiple car crashes in the distance, and without thinking, I stomp on the accelerator and race toward the scene. I soon find that I’ve driven straight into hell at full speed with no brakes, just like everyone around me…! In the midst of this insanity, I discover the corpse of a girl, and suddenly I know—I am the brilliant detective. And I must solve the mystery of her death.” (Yen Press)
