Yoshimasa Hosoya compared the anime to a French movement film, with shades of avante-garde, realism and surrealism.
Instead of using the normal microphones for recording anime dialogue, the voices were recorded with a shotgun microphone, which was positioned above the actors rather than in front of them, to enable the actor' voices to be more raw and realistic.
The voice actors were allowed to act out the movements of their characters during voice recording.
