Very cheesy and bad acting except Dane DeHaan and Avan Jogia. The story is very impossible yet it is watchable just kind of stupid.
Honestly, the show is okay. Its entertaining, not terrible. But I had a difficult time believing anything in this show would actually happen. The acting wasn't that good. The writing was biased and pretentious. The baseline was creative but then it was given to writers who had no clue what the hell they were talking about. Honestly it's a nice time killer during a pandemic, but that's it.
I was intrigued at the onset, psychopath stalks and terrorizes a lonely young Uber driver, an interesting and timely thriller. Unfortunately, as the series plays out, the dialogue becomes more and more non-sensical and because of this the acting falls apart. I was left rolling my eyes during the final three episodes as Clare began having regular conversations with her stalker Carl E. Maika Monroe was excellent throughout the series, even with the silly dialogue and DeHaan was surprisingly good, playing beyond his usual character archetype of quirky leading man, transforming into a psychotic serial killer. The two stars ultimately can't hold this show together as dialogue devolves into silliness and the plot starts growing more holes than a piece of Swiss cheese.
Didn't give a star rating since I only saw one ep. Man it is awful. I'm a fan of Dehan and Monroe, so I'm saddened and a little disappointed to see them in this level of show. The dialogue is so clunky and cringe I had to stop watching several times in the first (7min!) episode. Neither behave or talk like real human beings, and the build up to the "reveal" at the end is laughable, not scary, due to the execution. I hope for better projects for both of them in the future.
At all.
I'ld like to point out (since some don't see the idea behind all those numbers between 1 and 10), that 6 is a GOOD score! It means it wasn't great or brilliant, but good enough. And this was.
I read a lot of bad reviews that seems to me they have a problem about it not being 'realistic', like this couldn't happen in the real world. This to me, is not a valid complaint. Not every movie is Schindler's List.
I say this COULD happen, but it's definitely not plausible. But that's why it is a thriller series, not a documentary. It was clearly designed to entertain, and not to be deep. And entertain me, well it kinda did! The story is a classic thriller concept (which I happen to like), and nothing new at all. But then the way it unfolds, and the places it goes were pretty new to me and just surprising enough.
Definitely not a must see, oh no. But if you're in the mood for this kind of old school style thriller to be entertained, I see no reason why "The Stranger" could not cure that itch.
