Steve Watts, Howard Perret, Sophia Capasso, and Isabella Marshall in Incidental Characters (2020)
Set in the beautiful, historic town of Lewes, East Sussex, Incidental Characters is a very British comedy about fitting in, falling out, getting lost and getting back on track. It tells the story of four very different but equally socially awkward people as they heroically muddle through life.

Alf (Howard Perret) finds other people difficult to read. He lives in a world of his own; everyone else is an alien. With meaning so often lost in translation, Alf stumbles into friendship before falling head over heels in love.

Josie (Sophia Capasso) is a dreamer. Having recently graduated from Art School she now finds herself drifting, searching for answers but asking all the wrong questions.

Alison (Isabella Marshall) is stuck in her lonely habits. In a small town, it is too easy to keep going over old ground. She makes the same mistakes time and again.

Tony (Steve Watts) is a hapless romantic. Twice married and seeking a new companion, he lets the need for approval stand in the way of true love.

Incidental Characters is a story of hope. How you never know when a chance meeting or coincidence will change your life for the better. It is about the magic of moments and the influence we each have on each other, often without knowing it.

    A delightful British film.

It is charming, witty and insightful. The performances of the young cast are uniformly good, and the design is unusually pleasing in its intricate details. Well worth seeing!

    Pretty scenery, dismal script.

I wanted to love this. I love Lewes. I love film. What could go wrong?

Starting point was good; some talented actors, and a quirky (but pointless) what we had for breakfast interview. But after quirkiness awkwardness took over, with the sad sight of good actors struggling with a poor script. And it just never really took off. Give it a miss.

    Quirky, funny and life-affirming

A subtle and gentle comedy, well-acted and directed, and very much a love story to the Sussex town of Lewes. Artistic and quirky, it wraps up with a very satisfying ending, reminding us all to trust in our own creativity.

    Loved it

When I read 'A very British Comedy' I thought this film would be my sort of thing. It exceeded my expectations, I loved it. Well observed characters, well acted. Sometimes heartbreakingly accurate portrayal of the difficulties many people have in just getting through life's trials and tribulations with just enough humour to lift you again. I liked the plot, and how it all tied up at the end. The scenery and sets were pretty and quintessentially English. Not all movies have to have dark plots with intricate twists, not all need hundreds of millions of pounds to budget within, not all need Hollywood stars or mind blowing effects. This had none and yet I was compelled to create an IMDb account and share with the reader my opinion.

    ....

I think this movie could have done better. It had the potential. Loved the actors. Brilliant acting. Superb dialogue but something was missing. Probably it's coming from my high expectations Of an amazing beginning of this movie. Overall a good watch. Loved the colour correction.
