The thriller genre is vast, meaning a handful of great thriller series have gone unnoticed over the years. Such shows are up to par with some of the best thriller TV shows of all time but haven't earned as much attention. Many of the more underrated shows are thriller miniseries, operate at a slower pace, and are released in other parts of the world.
These are just a handful of variables to explain why underrated shows like Top of the Lake and The Kettering Incident are likely to be missed by general audiences. Despite being underrated and often overlooked, thriller series like The Killing and The Night Of boast a compelling balance of mystery and drama, ensuring audiences aren't bored or able to see various plot twists coming. Lacking the legacy and popularity of other shows in the genre, several underrated thriller series are still waiting to be discovered.

Blue Lock's first season held a lot of potential. Mixing soccer with a battle royale twist gave this sports anime a dark shonen take, offering fans something exciting and new. However, season two hasn't lived up to the lofty expectations Blue Lock's first season had created. As a result, many fans have been left disappointed.
Blue Lock may have been promising, but it fell short in ways that other sports anime haven't. Haikyuu!! lasted for four seasons along with an anime film series, starting all the way back in 2014. The manga was first serialized two years before that. Haikyuu!! succeeded where Blue Lock failed, in part because it recognized that it was part of the shonen genre and played into its tropes. For the fans who were let down by Blue Lock, Haikyuu!! may be worth checking out instead.

Quick Links Why Does Valya Harkonnen Hate the Imperium in Dune: Prophecy? How Is Valya Harkonnen Trying to Control the Imperium in Dune: Prophecy? How Does Valya Harkonnen's Vision Inform the Dune Movies?
The following contains spoilers for Dune: Prophecy Season 1, Episode 4, "Twice Born," which premiered Sunday, Dec. 8 on HBO.
When it comes to modern sci-fi, few can argue how grand the Denis Villeneuve Dune movies are. They form part of a tapestry that has modernized the Frank Herbert novels, as well as updated live-action adaptations from before. They are a spectacle, which is why fans are all in on Dune: Prophecy.
The prequel TV series is set 10,000 years before the films, telling the origin story of the Bene Gesserit. After four episodes, viewers have finally learned the full scope of the plan being run by Emily Watson's Valya Harkonnen against the Imperium. It's a major lesson in how...

There's a strong current of folk horror titles about outsiders entering isolated, weird communities and succumbing to their horrors. Think The Wicker Man, Midsommar, Apostle, The Third Day, Wake Wood, The Lair of the White Worm, The Ritual, Dagon, Population 436, Offseason, and so on. In many ways, the subgenre feels like a post-colonialist response to the centuries of Christian imperialism that subjugated small pagan communities, especially considering many of these horror films came from the UK, the former kingpins of imperialism. In these films and shows, the occult rural communities get their revenge on the more 'sophisticated' Christian outsiders from the big city. The new film Get Away exists in this canon, but wickedly plays with its structure and themes.
The film is written by and stars Nick Frost, pairing him yet again with filmmaker Steffen Haars; they made an almost complementary film around the same time, the batsh*t wild Krazy House.

Dune: Prophecy star Emily Watson shared what makes the upcoming HBO series different from other epic sci-fi franchises. This marks Watsons first major TV project as the lead, after previously starring as a recurring character in multiple shows, including Little Women, Chernobyl, The Third Day, and Too Close.

With all the reboots, remakes, adaptations, and resurrections out there, it was just a matter of time before Lord of the Flies made its way to the forefront. William Golding’s 1954 classic is no stranger to film adaptations, with versions in 1963 and 1990 that remained more or less faithful to the source material.
However, Lord of the Flies is both simple in its thematic depictions and complicated, especially at a time of bloated budgets, intense fan scrutiny, and political messaging.
For every movie or TV show that honors the source material, often resulting in fan and critical praise, there are ten that take a chainsaw to the original classics before curb-stomping them for good measure.

On the bright side, Lord of the Flies is staying home. BBC commissioned it with Sony’s backing, and it will release on BBC iPlayer, BBC One, and Stan.

David Fincher is reportedly still working on an American version of Squid Game with Netflix. Fincher's partnership with Netflix allows for creative freedom, making the idea of a Squid Game remake exciting. Squid Game remains Netflix's most-watched show, prompting anticipation for a potential English-language remake by Fincher.
According to some sources, David Fincher is still working on an American version of Squid Game. There are not yet many details about the production, but given the extension of Fincher's contract with the streamer, there are no limits to what they could do together in the future. While everyone keeps begging Fincher and Netflix for a continuation of Mindhunter, the remake of the South Korean juggernaut TV show could potentially be a more successful project if it actually gets made.
Fincher, whose previous work with Netflix includes the feature film Mank, the series Mindhunter, and most recently, The Killer, isn't a stranger to remakes.

A quartet of fast-rising British names are coming together for a buzzy new project launching at the Cannes market.
Bella Ramsey, Louis Partridge and Ruby Stokes are set to lead Sunny Dancer, the sophomore feature from George Jaques. Embankment Films is handling global pre-sales of the film, which it says showcases the “best of new British talent.”
“Sunny Dancer” follows Ivy (Ramsey), a teenager in remission from cancer, whose gloriously outspoken mum and well-intentioned dad insist she attend Children Run Free Camp, a summer retreat for young adults affected by cancer. The camp’s slogan, “Where kids come to kid,” does little to alleviate Ivy’s apprehension, and a quick Google search confirms her fears when she stumbles upon a cringeworthy promotional video filled with tacky messages and clichéd sunsets. As if conquering cancer wasn’t enough of a challenge, Ivy now faces the prospect of spending her summer at what she calls “chemo camp.

The Sympathizer presents Vietnamese culture with a primarily Vietnamese cast speaking their native tongue. Stars Fred Nguyen Khan and Duy Nguyn researched extensively to time-travel into the late 1970s setting, finding inspiration in music. Interestingly, the two actors were already friends well before being cast in the show, which further helped them capture the close bond between their characters.
The Vietnam War is being told through a unique new lens with The Sympathizer. Based on Viet Thanh Nguyen's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, the HBO thriller is set near the end of the Vietnam War, following a group of refugees as they escape from the country and head to America to build new lives. Amid the refugees is the Captain, a spy for North Vietnam who had been working undercover in the South Vietnam army and continues his mission while on the other side of the world.

A man waits for low tide to gain access to an island, with no idea this is home to strange customs and masked residents. Even when he faces the island’s weirdness or the outright hostility of those who live there, he feels drawn to the place. In the main role, Jude Law is trapped in this folk horror entry, a horror subgenre that includes classics like The Wicker Man and modern updates like Midsommar. In these movies, outsiders are unable to leave dangerous small communities due to seclusion, and while it’s a similar setup, the 2020 HBO miniseries The Third Day brings a different threat. Nothing is as it seems as the episodes slowly unravel the truths behind this twisty psychological horror that indulges in the mysterious appeal to folk horror. The Third Day is not stuck to a feature-length runtime, using the extended time across six episodes and one special live event,...

With the announcement of a live-action adaptation of the highly successful animated feature film How to Train Your Dragon, many are quick to question the true intentions of the creators at Dreamworks and Universal. Though some scoff at the mere mention of a new reboot, there should be reasonable anticipation for the potential narratives and creative possibilities of an expanded Dragon universe.
The odds are surely stacked against Universal. Audiences and critics seem to be weary of the exhaustive effort Disney has put into their live-action adaptations. Starting with 2010’s Alice in Wonderland, Disney has repeatedly brought their animated favorites to real life with upcoming releases including Snow White, Moana, and Lilo & Stitch.

Although Jude Law first emerged in the 1990s as a young, charismatic heartthrob, he quickly proved that he was a more than capable actor. Similar to his The Talented Mr. Ripley co-star, Matt Damon, Law has been judicious with his career decisions. While he's often appeared in major blockbuster franchises like Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes series and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Law has done films within almost every genre. He has even done strong work on the prestige television circuit with his strong performances in the HBO limited series The Third Day and The Young Pope.

Netflix's Apostle pulls some things off that great horror movies struggle to. Apostle strikes a balance between occult elements and intense, high-octane action. Apostle understands creative balance in storytelling, avoiding extreme elements seen in other horror films and delivering a satisfying experience.
When it comes to folk horror, many fans are divided. Some of these narratives have tons of nuanced arcs, dissecting religion, the occult and the human condition. Robert Eggers' The Witch is a prime example of this, as well as It Comes at Night. These are two A24 movies that often had viewers wondering if what they were seeing was real or if it was just hallucinations and a psychological breakdown through the perspectives of the main characters.
When that approach is taken, though, there's a risk that some of these horrors won't be that well-balanced. The Relic is another example of this, which does the cerebral haunting vibe well,...

Plan B Entertainment partners Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner play their cards close to their chests when it comes to strategy and upcoming plans.
Co-president Kleiner gave a rare insight into the company’s inner workings this week at the San Sebastian Film Festival’s Creative Investor Conference, organized in association with CAA Media Finance.
“To do this gig you have to have some underlying idealism and optimism,” he said of navigating the current volatile market as a producer.
“We’re working with a mix of established filmmakers and more emerging talent. The spectrum is really wide. Whether its Nia DaCosta, Bing Liu, David Michod, Lee Isaac Chung or RaMell Ross, Bong [Joon-Ho], or Jo Kosinski on his Formula One movie, things kind of find their place but I definitely feel like the bar seems quite high these days.”

Following news that the Writers’ Guild of America and Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers have reached a tentative deal, Hollywood is starting to prepare for its comeback. While some productions were in the midst of filming when the WGA strike happened, others were in the early planning stages — like “The Last of Us” Season 2.
“Very proud of the WGA and its membership, and excited to get back to work on The Last of Us Season 2,” showrunner Craig Mazin wrote on Threads Monday. “The strike has not yet been officially lifted, but the second it is, we will spring into action!”
In a follow-up post, the writer clarified that Season 2 is still in preproduction, and writing will resume on the HBO drama series.
“I hope to have an update for start of filming before too long,” Mazin added.

HBO’s adaptation of “The Last of Us” scratched the surface on the video-game franchise’s massive world – which will continue to unfold when the drama series eventually returns for its second season.
But outside of Joel and Ellie’s main narrative, which co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have previously said could span across multiple seasons, the pair have not had discussions about the potential for spin-offs that could further expand on the world’s other characters.
“We haven’t talked about that specifically because we’re so focused on just telling this main narrative. I’m not against the idea of other shows that may draw from these characters or that world,” Mazin told TheWrap in an interview in accordance with WGA guidelines and facilitated through his personal publicist. “I don’t know how much more ‘The Last of Us’ I personally would be able to do. Opening in March 2022, the production has sold over 200,000 tickets. By the time it closes, the show will be the longest running mask show that the company has presented in London.
Over 600 people have worked on the show, making it the largest project in Punchdrunk’s history. The epic retelling of the end of the Trojan war, set between the neon-drenched backstreets of downtown Troy and the menacing but opulent shadow of Greece, is played out across two vast warehouse buildings. Part of the old Woolwich Arsenal, these buildings provide Punchdrunk with its first permanent home in London.

In December 2022, the critically acclaimed, mega-successful stage musical based on Roald Dahl’s beloved children’s book Matilda came to cinemas translated into a punchy, inventive feature film. Written by playwright and screenwriter Dennis Kelly with songs and lyrics by comedian and writer Tim Minchin (Upright), the musical – like the book – is a terrific blend of poignancy and rebellious satire.
Famously adapted for a 1996 American feature film starring writer Mara Wilson in the title role, Matilda is the story of an extraordinary young girl born into a neglectful family who are unable to see, or appreciate her uniqueness. Matilda Wormwood isn’t just an academic genius, and when she goes up against the cruel, child-hating headmistress Miss Trunchbull, she uses her powers to right a generational wrong.
The new film retains the original musical’s anarchic heart, chiefly by retaining its director Matthew Warchus, who pulled the whole thing together...

Many new and returning cast members will bring The Witcher season 3 to life. Based on the books and short stories by Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher TV series follows Geralt—a mutated monster hunter for hire—who fights to protect his adopted child, Ciri, from individuals who want her untapped supernatural powers. The Witcher season 1 followed the choppy narrative of the short stories while season 2 focused a lot more on the novels, especially Blood of Elves. Showrunner Lauren Hissrich shared with TechRadar that The Witcher season 3 explores the plot of the book The Time of Contempt.
Netflix set a split release date for The Witcher season 3 with five episodes on June 29, 2023, and three more episodes on July 27, 2023. The actress who played Joel’s daughter Sarah in HBO’s The Last of Us doesn’t have a huge filmography yet, but she’s an up-and-coming star with a few recognizable roles. The Last of Us broke HBO viewership records and was universally praised by critics and fans alike as one of the greatest video game adaptations. Although Sarah is killed shortly after the Cordyceps outbreak, she looms large over the series as the source of Joel’s pain. A big part of what made The Last of Us such an instant hit is that Sarah was lovable and endearing from the outset, so the audience felt Joel’s grief when she died so suddenly.

In 2013, people lost their minds over the first 20 minutes of NaughtyDog's post-apocalyptic epic, "The Last Of Us" — and believe it or not, that reaction had nothing to do with a zombie infection turning humanity into ravenous, parasitic puppets. See, by the time folks finally got their hands on the disc, the game had drummed up plenty of hype, including lots of breathless praise from critics. People assumed they had a solid grasp of what they were in for.
Every single poster, trailer, and piece of marketing had made the premise pretty clear: "The Last Of Us" was the story of a hardened apocalypse survivor battling against the odds to protect a young girl from harm. So when the game kicks off with players assuming the role of Sarah, a 12-year-old who witnesses the collapse of society, it's all too easy to assume she's the girl that Joel will spend the game protecting.

The series premiere of “The Last of Us” brought in a staggering 4.7 million viewers across its linear and HBO Max platforms on Sunday evening, according to Nielsen and first-party data.
The post-apocalyptic drama series, which is based on Naughty Dog’s critically acclaimed video game franchise, holds HBO’s second-largest debut – behind only “House of the Dragon” – since “Boardwalk Empire” premiered on the network in 2010.
Sunday night’s performance was nearly double the Season 2 debut night for “Euphoria,” which went on to average 19.5 million viewers per episode in the United States. Sunday night viewership for an HBO series typically represents 20 to 40 of the show’s total gross audience per episode.
