The Lost Symbol

'Road House 2' Adds Dave Bautista in Key Role
Image
Amazon’s highly anticipated sequel to one of its biggest action hits from last year has now added the perfect villain. Starring Academy Award-nominee Jake Gyllenhaal and rebooting the beloved 80s action outing Road House, it has now been confirmed that the upcoming sequel will bring a former MCU star, and real-life fighter, into the fray.

Following much rumor and speculation, Guardians of the Galaxy and Dune star Dave Bautista will face off with Gyllenhaal in Road House 2. The actor, who is also known for the likes of Blade Runner 2049, Army of the Dead, Knock at the Cabin, and more, as well as his tenure as both a WWE superstar and a stint in Mma, is reportedly “circling” the action movie follow-up, according to Deadline.

Released last year and directed by Doug Liman from a screenplay written by Anthony Bagarozzi (The Nice Guys) and Charles Mondry (Doc Savage...

‘We’re drawn to complicated people, not heroes’: Ashley Zukerman on Succession, Silo and playing ‘punchable men’
Ashley Zukerman
The 41-year-old Australian actor cringes when talking about success but admits he’s ‘proud of my work in the last few years in a way that I wasn’t before’

Get our weekend culture and lifestyle email

Ashley Zukerman is that guy: you’ll know him from something and you’ll have enjoyed him in it. It might be Nate Sofrelli from Succession, the political strategist who begs for an affair with Sarah Snook’s Shiv Roy – a stalemate that ends in a parked car when Shiv grabs Nate’s hand and shoves it down the front of her jeans. Or maybe you saw Apple Cider Vinegar, where he played Belle Gibson’s deeply awful and codependent partner. Or in the delightfully daft Dan Brown show The Lost Symbol as the dashing know-it-all symbology expert Robert Langdon. He was also a sinister US politician in Netflix’s Designated Survivor, and...

Boris Mojsovski’s Immigrant Experience Dark Comedy ‘Foreign Tongue’ Starring Kimberly-Sue Murray Wraps & Releases First Images
Image
Exclusive: Boris Mojsovski’s dark comedy Foreign Tongue, about a Canadian woman who wakes up one morning with a thick Bosnian accent, has completed principal photography and released first images.

Billed as a love letter to the immigrant experience, the film stars Kimberly-Sue Murray (Shadowhunters), Steve Byers (The Madness), Rachel Ancheril (Star Trek: Discovery) and Greg Bryk (A History of Violence).

Murray plays a disillusioned North American woman who life is overturned as the result of a baffling real-life condition known as foreign accent syndrome, which leads to her developing a Bosnian accent overnight.

The condition transforms Kathy into the most unlikely immigrant, a stranger from within. Blending wit with emotional depth, Foreign Tongue turns a rare medical anomaly into a surreal, genre-defying reflection on identity, perception, and cultural belonging.

Foreign Tongue is a deeply personal project for Sarajevo-born, Canada-based director and cinematographer Mojsovski.

4 Years Have Passed Since This 60% Rated Peacock Series Butchered My Favorite Dan Brown Novel
Image
It’s a crying shame that Peacock canceled 2021’s The Lost Symbol series after only just one season. It had a promising premise and even possessed the makings of a successful adventure mystery thriller—think Da Vinci Code and the rest of the Robert Langdon movies. Unfortunately, the confusing storyline and odd pacing yielded negative reactions from fans and critics, leading to its unceremonious cancelation.

It was initially planned as a movie that would have starred Tom Hanks, but later on turned to adapt Inferno instead. In 2019, the project was revived to serve as a prequel to the film series.

The Lost Symbol Tried to Be the Next Da Vinci Code—And Completely Missed the Mark

The Lost Symbol almost debuted for a theatrical release as Tom Hanks and director Ron Howard worked on it for a while. Upon realizing that many of its elements and plot lines were similar...

19 Years Ago, Tom Hanks Starred in His Biggest Live-Action Movie Since Forrest Gump (& It's Free to Stream Right Now)
Image
It's a good month to be a Tom Hanks fan with a Tubi account. The actor's 2006 box office hit, The Da Vinci Code, was recently added to the platform and is now available to stream for free.

Based on Dan Brown's 2003 novel of the same name, which was a major bestseller in the mid-2000s thanks to its "must-read" status, The Da Vinci Code stars Hanks as Harvard professor Robert Langdon, who specializes in religious symbology, with a supporting cast that includes Ian McKellen, Alfred Melino, Jean Reno, and Paul Bettany. In the movie, Langdon, after becoming the prime suspect in the unusual murder of Louvre curator Jacques Saunière, escapes custody with the assistance of police cryptologist Sophie Neveu. The two then begin a quest for the legendary Holy Grail, where they come up against a secret cabal within Opus Dei, who wish to keep the true Grail a...

‘Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning’ Overtakes Tom Hanks' Controversial Papal Conspiracy Thriller at the International Box Office
Image
The best that star Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie can hope for at this stage is for their latest film, Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, to pass the $600 million mark at the worldwide box office. The movie is currently sitting at around $540 million, which means that it still hasn't overtaken its direct predecessor, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning, which was viewed as an underperformer. The Final Reckoning has the added responsibility of recovering its humongous reported budget and sending off the franchise in celebratory fashion. It has achieved neither goal, although it has now overtaken a controversial older blockbuster starring another Tom.

The film's $361 million international haul puts it ahead of the $357 million that Tom Hanks and Ron Howard's Angels & Demons grossed internationally in 2009. The movie concluded its global run with $490 million. The Final Reckoning needs to gross around $800 million globally in order to break even,...

Robert Langdon TV Series In Development At Netflix With Da Vinci Code Author & Lost Showrunner As Co-Creators
Image
Netflix is developing a new television series following Robert Langdon, the protagonist of Dan Brown's novels who was played by Tom Hanks in The Da Vinci Code. The Robert Langdon books have previously been successfully adapted into three movies: The Da Vinci Code, Angels & Demons, and Inferno. The fourth book in the series, "The Lost Symbol," was also made into a Peacock original television series in 2021, where Ashley Zukerman played a younger version of Langdon. While the show wasn't as popular, the Robert Langdon movies proved wildly successful, grossing nearly $1.5 billion at the box office and enjoying quite a bit of popularity on streaming.

A report from Deadline confirmed that Netflix won a bidding war for the rights to adapt Dan Brown's novel "The Secret of Secrets," the sixth book in the Robert Langdon series. It is not yet known if Tom Hanks or Ashley Zukerman will play Robert Langdon again,...

Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou in Da Vinci Code (2006)
Netflix will adapt the newest Robert Langdon story from Dan Brown into a series
Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou in Da Vinci Code (2006)
The puzzle-solving character from the Da Vinci Code novel is getting a new small-screen adaptation. In 2021, Peacock attempted to bring Robert Langdon to an episodic form with the series The Lost Symbol. Based on the 2009 novel by Dan Brown, The Lost Symbol starred Ashley Zukerman as young Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon as he must solve a series of deadly puzzles to save his kidnapped mentor and thwart a chilling global conspiracy. In addition to Zukerman, The Lost Symbol also starred Valorie Curry, Sumalee Montano, Rick Gonzalez, Eddie Izzard and Beau Knapp.

Unfortunately, The Lost Symbol failed to resonate with audiences and the show was canceled after one season. Netflix is hoping to find the pulse of viewers that Peacock couldn’t quite put their finger on. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Netflix is developing a show on The Secret of Secrets, which is the latest novel from author Dan Brown.

'Road House 2' Will See Jake Gyllenhaal Reunite With Director Guy Ritchie
Image
The Jake Gyllenhaal-led remake of the 80s action classic Road House was a big hit for Amazon last year, and the sequel has now snatched up the perfect director. As per a report by Deadline, plot details for Road House 2 are currently being kept under wraps, with Ritchie taking over the reins for the action franchise from the first outing’s Doug Liman following the latter’s frustration with Amazon skipping theaters and debuting the movie on their streaming platform Prime Video. Tom Hanks' Forgotten Papal Conclave Blockbuster Becomes a Streaming Hit
Image
Even as Edward Berger's Oscar-winning hit Conclave continues to rule streaming charts, albeit under unfortunate circumstances, another movie set against the backdrop of the ancient Catholic ritual is climbing up the rankings. The movie in question made nearly five times as much at the box office than Conclave back in 2009, but was hardly as acclaimed. It featured a genuine A-lister in the lead role, but remains largely forgotten. At best, it can claim to have cultivated a cult following. The movie is Angels & Demons, the sequel to 2006's blockbuster The Da Vinci Code.

Both films were headlined by Tom Hanks, directed by Ron Howard, and based on best-selling thrillers written by Dan Brown. Angels & Demons saw Hanks' Professor Robert Langdon being summoned to the Vatican in the immediate aftermath of the Pope's death. He is told that four Cardinals have been kidnapped by a man claiming to...

Why Tom Hanks’ The Lost Symbol Movie Was Cancelled (& Became A TV Show)
Image
The Lost Symbol film was skipped in favor of adapting Inferno due to similarities in plot and themes with previous movies in the Robert Langdon franchise. The decision to turn The Lost Symbol into a television series was based on the belief that it would be a smart choice, although the show was ultimately canceled after one season. The Lost Symbol explores the world of Freemasonry and the quest for higher knowledge. It shares thematic similarities with previous Langdon novels, Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code. The decision to skip The Lost Symbol movie was made because its narrative overlapped too much with the first two films in the franchise. The Lost Symbol was transformed into a TV show to tap into its untapped potential, serving as a prequel to the Robert Langdon movies. However, the show received negative reviews and was canceled due to its confusing mythology and odd pacing,...

Stranger Things Director Reveal Hints Season 5 Will Continue An Awesome S4 Trend
Image
Stranger Things season 4 fully embraced horror, and season 5 is expected to continue this trend with a sci-fi twist. Dan Trachtenberg, known for his work in sci-fi and horror films, will direct an episode of Stranger Things season 5. Trachtenberg's previous works, such as 10 Cloverfield Lane, have been critically acclaimed, making him a promising choice for the series' horror theme.

Stranger Things is preparing for its fifth and final season, and it seems to be continuing the best trend of season 4. Stranger Things has stood out for its mix of fantasy and horror, as well as its many references and tributes to 1980s pop culture, but each season has brought a couple of changes to the series’ tone. Stranger Things seasons 1 and 2 were more about suspense, as they were introducing the audience to the Upside Down and its many mysteries, with season 3 adding more action and drama to the mix with the...

"A Laser Into My Heart": Stranger Things Season 5 Director Teases His Big Episode
Image
Director Dan Trachtenberg is excited to direct an episode of Stranger Things season 5, which he describes as "a laser into my heart." Stranger Things upcoming season is expected to focus on established characters rather than introducing new ones. Trachtenberg's previous TV work includes directing Black Mirror's "Playtest" and The Boys' debut episode.

Dan Trachtenberg, who will direct an episode of Stranger Things season 5, teases what to expect. Trachtenberg made a big splash in 2022, directing the Predator prequel Prey. The sci-fi movie was adored by audiences and critics, leading to calls for a follow-up film. Trachtenberg, who also helmed the similarly acclaimed 10 Cloverfield Lane, was announced in June as one of the directors of Stranger Things season 5, which will also be the finale season. Although little is known about the last installment of the hit Netflix series, it is expected to focus on established characters rather than introducing new ones.

NBC Universal’s TV Division Lost Its Voice Under Susan Rovner’s Leadership
Image
What’s NBC nowadays?

Even before the ongoing writers strike scrambled the network’s fall schedule, its identity — historically quite strong as a place for chewy, grown-up dramas and chic, cerebral sitcoms — had seemed hazy. Promising comedies, the sort that might have grown to fulfill the role recently played by “30 Rock” or “Superstore,” got unceremoniously booted from the air after barely a chance to thrive; new dramas, from “Ordinary Joe” to “The Thing About Pam,” seemed painfully undistinguished.

It’s been a tough few years. And as much as the departure of Susan Rovner, chairman of entertainment content for NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, a career TV executive previously known for her work at Warner Bros. Television, is just latest bit of media industry consolidation, it’s also a moment to observe that the legacy network and its corporate siblings have struggled to find a way forward. In the years...

Why Comcast Needs to Enter the M&a Game: Buy Out Hulu or a Competitor | Charts
Image
If Comcast is serious about its streaming ambitions, it must weigh its two most likely expansion plans: Buying out Disney’s ownership stake in Hulu or an M&a with a competitor.

In its first-quarter earnings, Comcast showed impressive growth in Peacock subscribers to 22 million. But while revenue was up 45%, Peacock’s losses were mounting ($704 million vs. $456 million a year ago), the NBCUniversal parent reported Thursday.

Questions remain about Comcast’s endgame with both Peacock and NBCUniversal as a whole. Can a major SVOD succeed with demand mostly driven by library titles like Peacock? How much more money is Comcast CEO Brian Roberts willing to part with before Peacock turns a profit? The streamer is set to lose $3 billion in 2023, after a $2.5 billion loss in 2022.
