Berlin’s Teddys Give Queer Cinema a Boost as LGBTQ+ Rights Erode Around the Globe
Image
This year marks the 39th annual Teddy Award honors, the longest-running LGBTQ+ prizes at any major film festival. While the Feb. 21 closing ceremony is business as usual for the Berlinale, global events could make this one of the most important years in Teddy history.

U.S. President Trump is implementing numerous anti-transgender policies, withdrawing President Biden’s executive order making federal agencies enforce a 2020 Supreme Court ruling that sex discrimination laws include LGBTQ discrimination, and even declaring that there are only two sexes – seemingly oblivious to children born intersex, a plot point in one of this year’s biggest Oscar contenders. His appointee Elon Musk regularly makes anti-trans statements and endorsed Germany’s far-right AfD party, which has opposed some gay rights. And rapper Kanye West has proudly aligned himself with the Nazi party, unaware or unconcerned that it persecuted Black people like him during Hitler’s reign.

Yet for now,...

Cheryl Dunye Taking ‘Sci-Fi Trans Erotic Thriller’ ‘Black Is Blue’ to European Markets to Escape U.S. Gatekeepers
Image
Thirteen years after “Mummy Is Coming,” American filmmaker Cheryl Dunye (“The Watermelon Woman”) is gearing up to produce a new feature film with “Black Is Blue” through her production company Jingletown Films. The film, loosely based on her eponymous 2014 short, is one of the projects selected at this year’s CineMart, the co-production market of the International Film Festival Rotterdam.

Speaking with Variety at the festival, Dunye says the idea for the “sci-fi trans erotic thriller” first came to her during the early days of the pandemic when she began rewatching classic films and thinking of her love for film noir, particularly Billy Wilder’s “Sunset Boulevard.”

The film is set to chronicle the erotic tale of a Black trans couple brought together by AI technology: Blue, a 40-something Black trans woman who was once a successful tech executive for a multinational in control of the world’s largest DNA database,...

John Erwin Dies: Voice Actor Behind ‘He-Man’ And Morris The Cat Was 88
Image
John Erwin, the voice behind such iconic animated and animal TV characters as He-Man, Morris The Cat, the snobby Reggie of the Archie cartoons and many other Saturday morning favorites of the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s, died last month of natural causes at his home in Camarillo, California. He was 88.

His death was announced today by his PR firm Celebworx.

Melendy Britt, who voiced the character She-Ra, superheroine sister of superhero He-Man in Filmation’s Masters of the Universe world, said in a statement, “For 40 years, John Erwin was not only my brother on screen, he was my friend.”

“To have ‘my brother’ pass on is a tremdeous sorrow even though I know life is not infinite,” Britt wrote on Facebook. “The tears I have are because John was such a special quiet man and we shared a very special relationship in those roles as twin brother and sister…He...

Toei Animation Is the Only Reason Why ‘Dragon Ball Daima’ Hasn’t Met Its Bitter Ending
Image
Toei Animation is one of the top-tier animation studios in Japan that has produced some landmark anime. Be it Gegege no Kitaro, Mazinger Z, or Cyborg 009, the studio gave us some of the trailblazing series in the shonen genre.

Above all, though, they did a splendid job with Akira Toriyama’s magnum opus on the whole. For decades the franchise has sustained its legendary status and the studio might be a solid reason behind it.

Vegeta’s Super Saiyan Transformation in the anime | Credit: Toei

In particular, Dragon Ball Daima’s status as Toriyama’s final project is being treated with utmost care. To the extent that some say that the series is solely carried on by its impeccable animation.

And while this is partly true, Toei went above and beyond with the series. Be it lore or pacing, the anime proves to be a just and faithful adaptation.

10 Greatest Garth Ennis Judge Dredd Stories
Image
Ennis's collaboration with Steve Dillon on Judge Dredd showcases their early partnership before working on Preacher. Ennis proves his mastery of blending extreme violence and absurd comedy in a story featuring a mutated Teddy Bear villain. Garth Ennis brings a brutal and satisfying story to Judge Dredd, with sinister villains and explosive action.

Judge Dredd features a metropolitan hellscape riddled with abhorrent criminal acts of the worst kind, barely-veiled totalitarianism calling itself justice, and nearly non-stop action through the eyes of the titular Judge Dredd. In other words, a perfect fictional world for Garth Ennis to sink his teeth into.

Garth Ennis is most widely known for co-creating The Boys, DC’s Hitman, and for being arguably the best writer Marvel’s The Punisher has ever had. But, before all that, Ennis wrote a number of Judge Dredd comics for the 2000 Ad publication, and they are some of the...

Indiana Jones 5 Avoided Passing the Torch
Image
The following contains spoilers for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, now in theaters.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is the fifth installment in the Indiana Jones saga -- and potentially the last. Although the finale teases that Indy might not have hung up his hat quite yet, the film does make a very deliberate choice about its future. While previous sidekick Short Round might have found a successor in Teddy, the Walt Disney and Lucasfilm production makes the decision not to provide a similar character for Indy himself. Indeed, there is arguably no passing of the torch moment contained in this legacy sequel.

The idea that a franchise like Indiana Jones will continue far into the future certainly isn't unusual. Many other film series have opted to go on this same journey, finding charismatic replacements for the iconic leading roles. Although plenty of rumors had circulated...

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny's Ending, Explained
Image
The following contains spoilers for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, now playing in theaters.

Lucasfilm's Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny brings Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones (aka Indy) back for one last hurrah. This time, he's joined by his goddaughter, Helena Shaw, as they seek yet another powerful relic. This is the Archimedes Dial, which has the ability to detect "fissures in time," allowing wielders to plot and traverse the time stream.

Once more, Indy has to dig deep to save the day. While he battles depression, he's lucky to have Helena picking up the slack, along with her own version of Short Round, Teddy. It leads to yet another high-octane, intense conclusion. But this time, there's a deep, sentimental sense of healing and closure that Indy garners.

Guilt Series 3 Ending Explained: The Bank Deal, Jim Sturrock, Escapes and Twists
Image
Warning: contains major spoilers for the Guilt series three finale.

Guilt finales are dense with action and surprise. Creator Neil Forsyth masterfully draws together threads from multiple plots, while secrets and betrayals come tumbling out to trip up the characters’ plans. Only one thing is certain: even if you are able to predict who’ll come out on top, you won’t be able to predict how they’ll get there.

In its third and final series, Guilt put Max and Jake McCall through the wringer once again, as they dodged gangsters, got embroiled in an international financial scam, and underwent a tricky but ultimately therapeutic reunion with their estranged dad. Eventually though, they and everybody else who deserved it found the escape – and hopefully, the peace – they’d been looking for. With major spoilers for anybody who hasn’t already binged all four episodes on BBC iPlayer, here’s how it all played out.

But while his previous experiments sound more impressive on paper – the first Tamil film to feature a dog as the main character; the first Tamil zombie film; and the first Tamil space film – they were quite disappointing in execution. In this grand line comes Captain, which I suppose one can call “the first Tamil film to liberally copy from Predator and other Hollywood movies and make a mess of it...

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Gives First Look At New Season 19 Cast Members & More In ‘Meet The Interns’ Video
Image
Grey’s Anatomy, which has successfully reinvented itself multiple times going through numerous casting changes, is headed to another transformational season, with star Ellen Pompeo scaling back her on-screen presence to eight episodes and five new additions joining the cast, Harry Shum Jr., Adelaide Kane, Alexis Floyd, Niko Terho, and Midori Francis.

The hit ABC medical drama has released a first-look video introducing the new characters — all first-year surgical residents –and giving a glance at some of the new dynamics at Grey Sloan, which was ordered to disband and rebuild its teaching program in the Season 18 finale.

The video (you can watch it below) starts with Pompeo’s Meredith, the hospital’s interim Chief Of Surgery, giving the new group a tour. It is indicated that the interns are “diamonds in the rough” who may not have been accepted elsewhere but given a chance at Grey Sloan.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Sets Returning Series Regular Cast For Season 19; Find Out Who Is Not Coming Back Full-Time
Image
Grey’s Anatomy’s Season 18 finale left the fate of several major characters in limbo, leaving fans to fret over the summer if their favorites are coming back.

Deadline already broke the news that star Ellen Pompeo will be scaling back her on-screen presence, appearing in eight episodes next season while remaining an executive producer. Also switching from a series regular to recurring status for Season 19 is Scott Speedman. The news is not surprising; the former Animal Kingdom star had signed a one-year series regular contract for Season 18 as a romantic interest for Pompeo’s Meredith. At the end of the Season 18 finale, Meredith and Speedman’s Nick had a falling out, she told him that he should probably go back to Minnesota. He walked out, she eventually ran after him but he was gone in one of the finale’s many cliffhangers.

Westworld (2016)
Note: The following contains spoilers for “Westworld” Season 4, Episode 7.

“Westworld” viewers know well enough by now that “dead” doesn’t always mean dead in the HBO sci-fi series, but Episode 7 of Season 4 sure seemed to seal the fate of one of the series’ most beloved characters.

Since returning from the Sublime, Bernard has maintained that after running simulations, there is only one way to save the world – and in that scenario, he doesn’t make it out alive. After teaming up with a revived Maeve (Thandiwe Newton) to take on Charlotte Hale (Tessa Thompson) and her tower that has human citizens of New York City under control, Bernard was confronted by the William host (Ed Harris) and subsequently shot to death.

When asked by TheWrap if Bernard is dead in a recent interview about the episode, Wright replied simply, “It seems so.”

The actor wouldn’t let on more than that,...

‘The Masked Singer’ teases upcoming bombshell moment: ‘[Someone] just walked off the stage’ [Watch]
Image
The preview trailer for the Wednesday, March 16 episode of “The Masked Singer” teases a “bombshell moment” that people are sure to be talking about the next day (watch above). “[Someone] just walked off the stage,” announces an irritated-looking Jenny McCarthy at the end of the video clip. Hmm, is this the highly anticipated moment that was heavily promoted in the media last month?

Spoiler alert! Rumors have been swirling that Rudy Giuliani, former Mayor of New York City and President Trump‘s personal attorney, was unmasked during a taping of an early Season 7 episode. Many fans speculated he’d be revealed in last week’s season premiere, but that turned out to be pastry chef Duff Goldman (aka McTerrier) instead. Per our sister site Deadline, when Giuliani was unmasked during said taping, both Robin Thicke and Ken Jeong temporarily “exited” the set before “eventually” returning. Perhaps this is what McCarthy is...

Image
Roger Mudd, the longtime CBS News correspondent and anchor who later teamed briefly with Tom Brokaw on NBC Nightly News, has died. He was 93.

Mudd died Tuesday of kidney failure at his home in McLean, Va, according to CBS News.

With a to-the-point style, Mudd was a familiar face for decades on network television, starting on CBS in the early 1960s, as he reported on Congress, politics and government. He became a star correspondent and filled in for Walter Cronkite in the anchor chair in the late 1960s and early 1970s and on the weekend CBS Evening News broadcasts.

But no moment stood out more in Mudd’s career than an interview he did in 1979 with Sen. Edward Kennedy, readying a challenge to President Jimmy Carter for the Democratic nomination. Mudd’s question was short and a bit of a softball — “Why do you want to be president?” — but Kennedy...
