    Uneven but entertaining

At the time I'm writing this, "The Mick and the Trick" was rated 4.8 with 81 viewers and not one single review. So I guess I have to be the one to break the ice.

It's possible that many people may be immediately put off by the title, as it's rather insinuous toward Irish and prostitutes, but the main character is an Irish guy whose accent comes and goes and is known as "The Mick." He is a hit man for both the IRA and a Cuban crime boss. Right at the top, I'm confused. Anyway, he decides he wants out of the business but because he knows too much, both bosses want him dead. After escaping one such attempted hit, he's rescued by a Puerto Rican transvestite hooker named Sugar ("The Trick"). They join together to get The Mick out of his problem. Semi-hilarity ensues.

I wanted to like this movie a lot more than I did. There weren't many issues with it, but they were huge ones which prevented it from being so much better. The main problem was I was really befuddled throughout the whole thing. When it starts out, I'm hearing all Irish brogues so I think I'm in Ireland. Then I'm hearing American accents. Then I'm hearing Puerto Rican (or Cuban?) accents, then New York police accents. I honestly don't know where this is even taking place. And my annoyance with this is just buzzing like a flying insect around my head, distracting me from probably picking up on something important. Big marks off for that.

Then there's the sudden unlikely teaming of the two main characters, which seems to happen way too quickly. Sugar talks about how happy she is with her life one moment, the next she's willing to learn how to shoot a gun and go up against a crime boss and the IRA?

Speaking of Sugar, her character is sometimes played so cringingly dumb that it made me shake my head. I will assume that Sugar is not transgender because transgender women do not wear tight clothing that accentuate male anatomy. This is a man in drag who is basically there for laughs, which really lowered the bar further. She starts off smart and proud, but eventually just becomes a caricature, which I found unfortunate. Others may disagree.

Production-wise it was fine as was the acting. The script was okay except for the aforementioned issues, although the ending was completely unoriginal and predictable. This isn't a great film but it's entertaining enough to fill up 90 minutes of your time. Just try not to think too hard and maybe if you pay better attention than I did you can figure out the beginning and you won't be as distracted. A firm 5.
