Wim Verstappen was a Dutch producer and director. In 1967, he started Scorpio Films, and among the productions he created during his time working under this banner was the 1971 explicit film Blue Movie, which led to the abolition of the Dutch film rating system for adults.

Thankfully, Cult Epics has stepped in to rescue this overlooked work, bringing it to a new audience with a long-awaited high-definition edition.

Image
Exactly twenty years ago today, War of the Worlds hit theaters on June 23, 2005, with a dream team behind it—Steven Spielberg directing, Tom Cruise leading, and Dakota Fanning delivering one of her most haunting child performances. Based on H.G. Wells’ legendary novel, this sci-fi thriller promised a nail-biting, panic-stricken alien invasion chaos.

It smashed the box office, earning a staggering $606M globally on a $132M budget—that’s an undeniable blockbuster hit. Critics largely applauded it too, with a respectable 76% on Rotten Tomatoes. And yet, audiences weren’t sold. With just a 42% audience score, War of the Worlds became Steven Spielberg’s least beloved film. So what went wrong? Let’s break down.

'It Wasn't My Fault': Dakota Johnson Shifts the Blame for Madame Web Flopping
Image
Dakota Johnson’s 2024 flop Madame Webmay haunt her for the rest of her life, but she’s not taking all the blame for the movie’s dreadful box office and critical performance. Earning just $43.8 million domestically and a total of $100.4 million worldwide, Madame Web barely managed to recoup its reported $80 million budget. In a new interview with the Los Angeles Times, Johnson said it wasn’t on her that the movie failed so badly.

“It wasn’t my fault,”Johnson began. “There’s this thing that happens now where a lot of creative decisions are made by committee. Or made by people who don’t have a creative bone in their body. And it’s really hard to make art that way. Or to make something entertaining that way,” she continued.

Johnson starred as Cassandra Webb in Madame Web. The film was critically panned and has a “Rotten” score of...

The 10 Worst John Wayne Movies Ranked
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

It's an understatement to say that John Wayne has a complicated legac, not only as an icon of American cinema but also as a figure who represents both the country's rugged idealism and its deeply ingrained ugliness. He worked alongside some of Hollywood's greatest performers, collaborated with the industry's most esteemed directors, and starred in some truly great films.

But Wayne had his fair share of misfires and duds, too — entries that help paint a more comprehensive picture of his cinematic footprint. Some were early B-grade genre pictures churned out at a rapid pace with meager resources. Others more directly reflect the problematic political beliefs and personal prejudices that, now more than ever, tarnish his reputation. Wayne is the sum of his widely varying, often contradictory parts, and that includes his more regrettable output.

Here are the 10 worst John Wayne movies,...

Tendaberry review – dreamlike drama of a young woman alone in New York
Haley Elizabeth Anderson in Tendaberry (2024)
Real residents and the city itself also star in Haley Elizabeth Anderson’s impressive feature debut, filled with beautifully curated images in 4K, Super 8 and analogue

Here is a dreamily sensual realist debut from Haley Elizabeth Anderson, the title a nod to New York singer-songwriter Laura Nyro and her 1969 album New York Tendaberry. It’s a movie of textures and moods and murmuring voiceovers; the pin-sharp 4K digital cinematography switching to grainy Super 8 and then to milky analogue video from the 1980s; and there are some beautifully curated images and sequences, some in slow-mo – particularly towards the end – where the camera follows a drifting butterfly which moves as slowly as a gull riding an updraft. Yet it can be a bit indulgent and occasionally borders on a kind of gratitude-journalling aesthetic in which the cause-and-effect nature of the drama is paused.

Acting newcomer Kota Johan plays Dakota, a twentysomething Dominican-American...

Dakota Johnson: Jamie Dornan Made ‘Grey’ More Colorful
Cinquante nuances de Grey (2015)
Image Source: Universal Pictures Home Entertainment After the novel Fifty Shades of Grey took the world by storm, it was not a matter of if, but when it would become a movie — and that “when” was 10 years ago. As we mark the movie’s anniversary, it’s easy to forget that when Dakota Johnson was cast in the role of Anastasia Steele, it was a huge departure for the young actress, who’d never done anything that required so much eroticism. The same was also true of Johnson’s co-star, Jamie Dornan. And as they navigated through a new kind of acting adventure together, Johnson really appreciated what Dornan brought to the role. At the time of the film’s release, she spoke glowingly of how Dornan’s portrayal of Christian Grey brought a sense of youthful playfulness into a role that could have been interpreted so much differently. Don Johnson Never Watched Dakota In Fifty Shades (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Hold up—Don Johnson, the coolest dad ever, never watched his daughter, Dakota, in Fifty Shades of Grey. Seriously. In a candid chat, Don kept it honest: “I would never see that. I wouldn’t see that even if she wasn’t in it. It’s not my kind of thing.” No surprise there—he’s got the ultimate “dad energy,” especially when watching his daughter get intimately tied up in the Red Room. That’s a no-go zone for Don. As he puts it, “As a father, there are certain images you don’t need in your head. I know it’s pretend and make-believe, but you know?” Yeah, we get it, Don.

But here’s the kicker—this wasn’t a random Hollywood dad reaction. Don admits he was surprised when Dakota decided to ditch college to chase her acting dream.

Netflix’s Bela Bajaria Lauds History Makers Sofia Vergara & ‘Baby Reindeer’s Nava Mau As Streamer Celebrates Broad Emmy Nominations Haul
Image
Netflix content chief Bela Bajaria will be making a lot of pleasant phone calls today after the streamer landed 107 Emmy nominations across 35 different shows.

It’s not the streamer’s biggest nomination haul — that was 160 in 2020 — but it put it firmly in the lead with FX coming in a surprise second with 93 nominations, higher than HBO and Max.

There were sizeable hauls for British shows Baby Reindeer and The Crown, and Ripley, which it picked up after it had been produced, but Bajaria is most pleased about the diversity of its nominations.

Shows such as All The Light We Cannot See, Blue Eye Samurai, The Gentlemen, The Greatest Night In Pop, Griselda, Love on the Spectrum U.S., 3 Body Problem and The Upshaws were all recognized, highlighting its “breadth” of programming, according to Bajaria.

Review: The Watchers is a Mix of Compelling Celtic Folk Horror and Choppy Storytelling
Image
The “Summer of Shyamalan” kicks off with Ishana Night Shyamalan's The Watchers, a misguided mixture of compelling Celtic folk horror and choppy storytelling. In a rare spot of Dewey Cox logic, it's a movie that's both too long and too short. Shyamalan's feature debut boasts a keen directorial eye—shot composition is that of a resourceful veteran—but it's a film at odds. Irish influences grate against predictable horror tropes, diminishing the allure of historical mythology about faes, changelings, and other forest creatures that may or may not be gathering outside a double-sided window that provides no answers (at first).

Dakota Fanning stars as Mina, an American woman hiding from the world amidst Galway's anonymity. She's tasked with transporting a parrot from the pet shop where she's employed to a client, but gets lost in a dense western Ireland forest along the way. After some wandering, the afternoon turns to nightfall,...

“Every single movie is a signpost of its time”: Steven Spielberg Detailed the 1 Difference He Has With Best Friend George Lucas After Making a Major Blunder

Steven Spielberg and George Lucas are the two prominent Hollywood names that stand out above the rest. I.S.S. review | The kind of solid, mid-budget thriller Hollywood doesn’t make anymore
Image
Trouble brews on board the International Space Station as war erupts on Earth. Here’s our I.S.S. review.

Most of my cinematic education came from browsing VHS tapes at the Finnish equivalent of a Blockbuster (it was called FilmTown). I would look at the covers for ages, treating each rental like a choice between life and death.

I.S.S. feels like a film I would have encountered back in the late 90s and early 2000s, and probably picked as well. It’s the kind of mid-budget thriller that rarely makes it to the big screen anymore, so watching I.S.S. in a cinema feels like a small victory in itself.

Ariana DeBose plays Kira Foster, a scientist who’s shuttled up to the International Space Station; the crew on board is made up of three Russians and three Americans.

It’s all going rather well at first, but I.S.S. would be a...

‘Madame Web’: First Reactions After the Premiere
Image
Madame Web was finally revealed to the public Monday night after the Sony/Marvel film held its premiere in Los Angeles, and the first reactions have already hit social media.

The superhero movie stars Dakota Johnson in the title role, a woman who develops psychic abilities. The cast also includes Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, Emma Roberts and Adam Scott. Directed by S.J. Clarkson, Madame Web was written by Clarkson, Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless and Claire Parker.

Madame Web is hitting theaters at a time when comic book movies are experiencing something of a slump, following poor box office returns and critical scores for Marvel’s The Marvels and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and DC’s The Flash, Black Adam, Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

The film is the fourth feature in Sony’s shared Spider-Man Universe (Ssu...

Walking Dead's 10 Main Female Antagonists, Ranked Least To Most Villainous
Image
The Walking Dead has a wide range of female antagonists who bring different shifts and challenges to the protagonists. These villains often operate with a community or small group behind them, but some operate solo, showcasing their individual motivations and beliefs. The actions and choices of these female antagonists, such as betrayal, manipulation, and cold decision-making, solidify their villainous status within the Walking Dead universe.

While The Walking Dead has many memorable characters, some of its female antagonists truly stand out because of their villainy. Starting the franchise off in 2010, The Walking Dead's first threat was the walkers. After not much time passed, human enemies became a problem for each group of protagonists. From the Governor in the main show to the Vultures in Fear The Walking Dead, there was always someone or a group to look out for.

With six shows currently in the franchise and The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live...

‘The Boy and the Heron’: How Gkids Pulled Off One of the Most Important Dubs in Anime History
Image
Founded in 2008, New York-based production studio and distributor Gkids almost immediately established itself as the United States’ most valuable lifeline to animated cinema from around the world, and so — after earning 12 Oscar nominations for introducing modern classics like “The Tale of the Princess Kaguya” and “Wolfwalkers” to American audiences — it might seem a bit overblown to suggest that the label’s reputation could still hang in the balance of a single dub. Gkids president Dave Jesteadt certainly didn’t expect that to be the case when he formally took the reins in January 2017, as the already thriving company was still on the verge of its greatest triumphs. And yet, by the end of the following month, everything that Gkids had accomplished would seem like a long prologue for the challenge that would ultimately define it.

On February 24, 2017, Studio Ghibli co-founder Toshio Suzuki announced that legendary filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki was coming...

"There's only room for one alpha dog in this town!" Samuel Goldwyn Films has revealed an official trailer for Dakota, another new dog movie about an ex-service dog who makes some new friends. Image
Exclusive: A key character will be returning to Amazon Prime Video’s Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan. Abbie Cornish, who portrayed Cathy Mueller in Season 1, will be back to reprise the role in the recently announced fourth season.

There has been a lingering mystery surrounding Cathy Mueller, Ryan’s love interest in the first season, as well as in the books. The character was never written out of the show, she just disappeared. There was not a single reference of her throughout Season 2, and the only clue given was Ryan (John Krasinski) sleeping with another woman early on in the season, and then later on saying he’s single.

There is no information how Cathy will be reintroduced on the show. Her return could be set up in the upcoming third season, production on which recently wrapped with a premiere date still Tbd.
