California has awarded $255.7 million in state tax credits across 22 television productions, the California Film Commission announced on Wednesday.

“The Studio,” “The Comeback,” “Golf,” “Ballard,” “S.W.A.T. Exiles,” “NCIS: Origins” and “Presumed Innocent” are all among the recipients, marking the first round of credits since the state upped its incentive to $750 million in June.

The commission also noted that due to the film and TV tax incentive program’s increase from its previous $330 million limit, there was a nearly 400% surge in applications for the television tax break, as opposed to last year. The new rules meant half-hour shows were welcome to apply for the first time as well.

Roy Ayers, the jazz vibraphonist whose smooth fusion planted the seeds of acid jazz and neo soul, died Wednesday at the age of 84.

Ayers’ family confirmed his death on the musician’s Facebook page: “It is with great sadness that the family of legendary vibraphonist, composer, and producer Roy Ayers announce his passing which occurred on March 4th, 2025 in New York City after a long illness.” A specific cause of death was not immediately available.

“Jury Duty” will be back for Season 2 sooner than we think.

The Amazon Freevee comedy, which became a surprise hit for the platform and migrated over to Prime Video after the sibling streamer’s shuttering, already produced its next installment, according to media reports.

Amazon representatives declined to comment for the story.

The new season is believed to be set at a corporate retreat instead of a courtroom, according to a report from Variety. Filming took place in Los Angeles and Deadline reported the story will center around a David vs. Goliath theme.

“Jury Duty” was created by Lee Eisenberg, and Gene Stupnitsky. Season 1 followed breakout star Ronald Gladden in a documentary-style journey following his time as a juror, until it is revealed that the proceedings were fake from the start.

Exclusive: Amplify Pictures has hired former CAA, Quibi and Picturestart exec Luke Esselen to take on a senior role as the international studio pushes into scripted.

Esselen has been named Senior Scripted Executive, reporting into Amplify’s Amsterdam-based Chief Content Officer, Rachel Eggebeen. He will be based in L.A., where Amplify is based, and be responsible for a slate of scripted projects that have an emphasis on ongoing series and franchises.

Thirty years after the release of Portishead’s first album, lead singer Beth Gibbons has announced the impending arrival of her own solo debut LP, Lives Outgrown.

Ahead of the album’s May 17 release via Domino, Gibbons has shared the first single “Floating on a Moment,” which was accompanied by a video directed by multimedia artist Tony Oursler.

Lives Outgrown is the culmination of a decade’s worth of songwriting for Gibbons, with the singer ruminating on motherhood, anxiety, menopause, and mortality over the course of the album’s 10 tracks.

Exclusive: Wiip has snapped up rights to Adamtine, a horror graphic novel by award-winner Hannah Berry, to develop for film.

Returning to his feature roots after exec producing HBO’s Emmy-winning miniseries Mare of Easttown, as well as its political drama White House Plumbers, Mark Roybal will produce alongside wiip’s Paul Lee and Nate Winslow. Berry will serve as an executive producer.

In Adamtine, four strangers on the last train home, all with their own connections to a serial killer, are stalked by a sneaking, shapeless evil with nowhere to run. It’s the second graphic novel from Berry and was published in 2012. The deal with wiip was brokered by Berry’s rep, Emma Topping, of Viv Loves Film.

Portishead have released a remastered and expanded edition of their excellent live album, Roseland NYC Live, in celebration of its 25th anniversary. Stream it below.

Roseland NYC Live was originally released on November 2nd, 1998, and featured Portishead backed by a 28-piece orchestra. The reissue adds three tracks previously only available in the concert film: “Undenied,” “Numb,” and “Western Eyes.” It also includes the original performances of “Sour Times” and “Roads” at the now-defunct New York City venue Roseland.

“I can’t believe it’s 25 years since Roseland,” vocalist Beth Gibbons wrote on Instagram. “It was such a scary but exciting time for me. It was the first time we had played our new tracks since Dummy and knowing it was being recorded meant I didn’t sleep much in the nights before.”

Guitarist Adrian Utley added, “I have really good memories of this show which we played before our second album was released.

The follow-up to 2017’s Woodstock, Chris Black Saved My Life was produced by Jeff Bhasker. The album is dedicated to Portugal. The Man’s late friend and honorary band member, Chris Black, who died on May 19th, 2019.

Produced by Asa Taccone, the lead single “Dummy” has that classic Portugal. The Man sound: a slinky bass line and breezy, modulated vocals open the track, before singer John Baldwin Gourley assumes his natural warble to command his audience to dance: “1, 2, 3, 4/ Everybody get on the dance floor/ 5, 6, 7, 8,/ It’s 4:00 a.m. and I’m wide awake.”

“Summer of Luv” is a slinky, psychedelic number, but according to Portugal. The Man frontman John Baldwin Gourley, it didn’t begin that way. “When we originally sat down to write” it, he said in a statement, “we intended to make this heavy song with a big riff, but the vocals came out chill because I was still recovering from my jaw problems, we realized it sat better in this space. The song turned out totally different than we intended.”

Gourley continued, “As we were working on the song, it just felt like it needed another voice, Ruban from Unknown Mortal Orchestra also lives in Portland and is one of our favorite artists, he just fit perfectly in.”

Portugal. the Man are gearing up to share their new album Chris Black Changed My Life on June 23rd, and they’ve offered another sample of it with today’s new single “Thunderdome [W.T.A.],” featuring Black Thought of The Roots and Mexican singer-songwriter legend Natalia Lafourcade.

With geographical references to the US-Mexico border, “Thunderdome” is an ode to the so-called American Dream and the lengths people go to in hopes of achieving it. “Welcome to America/ I’m waiting on a miracle/ All my sins American/ Yeah I’m waiting on a miracle,” vocalist John Gourley sings in the track’s opening lines, before Lafourcade chimes in: “You know you want it if you leave somebody you love.”

Black Thought, who’s collaborated with Portugal. the Man before on his 220 track “Fuel,” comes in near “Thunderdome”‘s latter half, and gives the song a welcome hip-hop boost. Check out the visualizer for the song below.

Years after she released her series “Dummy” on the now-defunct Quibi, Cody Heller decided to go into her next project without expectations. In doing so, she’s had her mind blown by the positive reaction she saw online as people received her latest work, “Jury Duty.”

Starring James Marsden, the documentary-style comedy takes one unsuspecting civilian and puts them through a series of pranks. The catch? He doesn’t know everything is fake. The entire case is fake — the judge, courtroom, bailiffs, and all of his peers are all paid actors and everything this team of “jurors” experienced is carefully orchestrated by Heller and her team of writers.

It’s a months long process from development and pre-production that sets the stage for the series, which would go on to become a success for Amazon’s free streaming platform, Freevee.

Exclusive: A+E Studios is getting into business with Curate Management and its founder Britton Rizzio. The studio has signed a first-look deal with the company to develop scripted series for broadcast and streaming in the U.S. and international space. Curate says the deal reinforces the company’s commitment to producing content that reflects unique perspectives and stories.

Curate, one of the few female-led-and-run literary management companies in town, was founded by film and TV literary manager Rizzio in 2021 with a focus on creators in film, television and books. The company has seen significant growth with Literary Manager Courtney Conwell joining as Partner and the hire of Becca Rodriguez as Book and IP Manager. In addition, Curate acquired Zipa Entertainment bringing Partner Sofia Escallon into the fold. The acquisition expanded Curate’s reach to Mexico where Escallon is based, with a focus on bilingual and bi-cultural showrunners, writers and directors in Latin America.

Covering a song as unforgettable as “Glory Box” is certainly no easy task, but St. Vincent does Portishead justice with her faithful rendition. She doesn’t do too much to tweak the source material — why mess with perfection? — but the sultry sheen and electric guitar flourishes are right up St. Vincent’s alley. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is warning Americans about an increase of drug-resistant strains of a bacteria called Shigella.

Jimmy Kimmel opened his monologue on Tuesday night giving his audience a heads-up about the “diarrhea superbug.” The ABC late-night host said when he first heard of it, he thought it was a holiday and didn’t know what it was.

“It’s called ‘Shigella,’ which I thought was a Jewish holiday,” Kimmel said. “But it’s not. ‘Shigella’ is one of the most common sources of diarrhea in the world. Just after Chipotle.”

Mira Sorvino shared a heartfelt goodbye to her father, Paul Sorvino, after the “Goodfellas” actor, who was also a singer and sculptor, died of natural causes on Monday at the age of 83.

“My father the great Paul Sorvino has passed. My heart is rent asunder- a life of love and joy and wisdom with him is over. He was the most wonderful father. I love him so much. I’m sending you love in the stars Dad as you ascend,” she wrote on Twitter.

Several fans also shared a clip of Mira’s Best Supporting Actress speech at the 1996 Oscars in which Paul is reduced to tears after she credits him for her talent.

Paul Sorvino, who distinguished himself in a long line of stage and screen performances including “Goodfellas” and “Law & Order,” died Monday of natural causes, according to his rep. He was 83.

His wife, DeeDee Sorvino, posted on Instagram, saying “I am completely devastated. The love of my life & the most wonderful man who has ever lived is gone. I am heartbroken.”

Sorvino, who was the father of actor Mira Sorvino, was perhaps best known for his role as Sgt. Frank Cerreta on NBC’s “Law & Order,” as Mafia don Pail Cicero in Martin Scorsese’s beloved gangster film “Goodfellas” and as Kissinger in Oliver Stone’s “Nixon.”

Though there have been deaf characters in movies for decades they were rarely played by hearing impaired actors. Hollywood was looking for big names for their movies and overlooked performers who were deaf. The success of HBO’s “Mare of Easttown” couldn’t have come at a better time for Wiip, the boutique production company behind Kate Winslet’s limited series. The murder mystery was nominated for 16 Emmys this year, earning raves for its unique storytelling and performances — and also for its twisty, satisfying ending.

“Mare” has become a nice calling card for Wiip, which former ABC Entertainment chief Paul Lee launched with the backing of CAA in 2018. “It is a landmark moment,” Lee says. “The genre is something that’s been done for a long time but never with that level of sophistication and with an ending that surprised and then surprised and then surprised again.”

Roku says its pickup of the 75-plus shows from Quibi, the short-lived premium mobile entertainment startup that went belly-up last year, has paid off beyond its expectations. But as with other streaming companies, Roku isn’t divulging specific metrics for the Quibi programming, which it rebranded as Roku Originals.

According to Roku, more active accounts streamed a Roku Original in the first two weeks on the Roku Channel than the number of Quibi accounts did on Quibi over the brief nine months of the app’s lifetime.

Roku’s claim that more people have already watched Quibi shows on its platform than on Quibi’s now-defunct app seems credible — but it’s not a particularly high bar.

The film is a buddy movie, a Lethal Weapon-esque pairing for the modern era with a romantic tension at the center. After it shook loose, Grabinski refashioned it as a feature film and Amazon saw it as a chance to add a modestly budgeted potential franchise to its slate.

CAA has sold a majority stake in Wiip, the producer behind HBO’s Mare of Easttown and Apple’s Dickinson, to Korean company Jtbc Studios. It marks the first sale of an agency-backed studio after CAA and the other agencies agreed to end their standoff with the WGA and sell a majority interest in their content divisions.

CAA, which was previously the majority owner of wiip, will remain a minority shareholder in the Paul Lee-led company.

Deadline understands that CAA had been shopping the stake around a number of traditional U.S studios but there were no takers. It comes as others such as WME are still looking for a buyer for an 80% stake in Endeavor Content.

Private equity company Atwater Capital, which took a stake in wiip in 2020, will also sell its stake.

Quibi is coming back from the dead next week… sort of.

On May 20, Roku will debut the first batch of Roku Originals — a collection of 30 shows originally produced for Quibi, the short-lived mobile entertainment startup led by Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman. Roku paid substantially less than $100 million for the assets of the defunct company, including rights to more than 75 shows overall.

The shows span genres and formats, comprising scripted series, documentaries, alternative and reality programming. Among the first “Roku Originals” coming next week are Kevin Hart’s action series “Die Hart,” Emmy-winning drama “#FreeRayshawn” starring Laurence Fishburne and Jasmine Cephas Jones, the revival of Comedy Central’s “Reno 911!” and “Dummy,” starring Anna Kendrick as a woman who befriends her boyfriend’s sex doll.

The lineup also includes “Chrissy’s Court,” a “Judge Judy”-style show starring Chrissy Teigen; a reboot of MTV’s “Punk’d” hosted by Chance the Rapper...

A raft of 30 original shows developed for — and briefly distributed by — now-defunct streaming startup Quibi are getting new life as Roku Originals, with a premiere date of May 20.

The shows, which include Emmy winner #FreeRayshawn as well as series starring Kevin Hart, Chrissy Teigen, Anna Kendrick, Chance the Rapper and more, will be available on the Roku Channel. The free, ad-supported Roku Channel offers 190 live, linear channels and 40,000 movie and TV titles, to viewers beyond Roku’s sizable base of connected devices and smart TVs. Unlike the subscription model of Quibi, the originals will be available for free. Limited advertising will be shown in between the seven- to 10-minute episodes.

In a 30-minute virtual pitch, the streaming provider noted the median age of its viewers is 39 (compared with 60-plus for the broadcast networks), and they are less tethered to the traditional cord. About 57% of Roku users have no pay-tv subscription, but many of them are willing to pay for SVOD services like Netflix and Disney+.

This “streaming-first audience is unreachable on linear TV,” said Julian Mintz, Roku’s national brand sales lead.

Jessica Walter, an Emmy-winning actress known for her work as the stalker in Clint Eastwood’s “Play Misty for Me,” and for the TV series “Arrested Development” and “Archer,” died Wednesday in New York. She was 80.

Walter received an Emmy nomination in 2005 for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy for playing the manipulative alcoholic Lucille Bluth in the critically adored and highly influential comedy “Arrested Development.”

With the rest of the cast of “Arrested Development,” she shared three SAG Award nominations for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a comedy, in 2005, 2006 and 2014.
