California has awarded $255.7 million in state tax credits across 22 television productions, the California Film Commission announced on Wednesday.
“The Studio,” “The Comeback,” “Golf,” “Ballard,” “S.W.A.T. Exiles,” “NCIS: Origins” and “Presumed Innocent” are all among the recipients, marking the first round of credits since the state upped its incentive to $750 million in June.
The commission also noted that due to the film and TV tax incentive program’s increase from its previous $330 million limit, there was a nearly 400% surge in applications for the television tax break, as opposed to last year. The new rules meant half-hour shows were welcome to apply for the first time as well.

There’s a strange dissonance between Beth Gibbons’s shy physical presence and that voice—enormous and unignorable. At the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Los Angeles last night, the Portishead singer held back from the glare of the roughly 2,000-person audience, standing mid-stage and often shrouded in darkness while her six band members were bathed in light. She didn’t bother with any chitchat, even a hello, letting the songs—most of them from her first entirely solo album, Lives Outgrown—speak for themselves.
Which is just as well, as dissonance suits Gibbons. Her vocals seem summoned as much by spirits as the vibration of muscle tissue in the larynx. From her ethereal pleas of desire and despair floating over the cinematic trip-hop of Portishead’s 1994 debut, Dummy, to her naked introspection on the more earthbound Out of Season, her 2003 collaborative album with Talk Talk bassist Paul Webb (a.k.

“Jury Duty” will be back for Season 2 sooner than we think.
The Amazon Freevee comedy, which became a surprise hit for the platform and migrated over to Prime Video after the sibling streamer’s shuttering, already produced its next installment, according to media reports.
Amazon representatives declined to comment for the story.
The new season is believed to be set at a corporate retreat instead of a courtroom, according to a report from Variety. Filming took place in Los Angeles and Deadline reported the story will center around a David vs. Goliath theme.
“Jury Duty” was created by Lee Eisenberg, and Gene Stupnitsky. Season 1 followed breakout star Ronald Gladden in a documentary-style journey following his time as a juror, until it is revealed that the proceedings were fake from the start.
The series is executive produced by the pair alongside David Bernad, Ruben Fleischer (“Superstore”), Nicholas Hatton, Cody Heller (“Dummy”), Todd Schulman,...

Woman of the Hour not only presents a harrowing look at some of Rodney Alcala's real-life crimes but also features memorable performances from talented cast members. Marking Anna Kendrick's directorial debut, Woman of the Hour sets itself apart from most other exploitative true crime thrillers by not unfolding the killer's lens. Instead, it primarily focuses on the perspectives of the women who crossed paths with the killer and how society often failed to protect them.
In terms of storytelling, Woman of the Hour is fairly linear and straightforward. However, despite its simplistic approach, the movie keeps viewers hooked with its well-written character beats and brilliant performances. Since the movie's characters and the actors who portray them play a crucial role in making its true crime drama more convincing and realistic, many viewers may be curious about who plays whom in Woman of the Hour after watching it.

When most people think about the history of reality TV, there are some chapters they forget. For example, before today's best reality competition shows like Survivor and The Amazing Race began, The Dating Game featured real people competing for a date.
Since Netflix premieres shows featuring A-list celebrities and movies with huge film stars, it makes sense the streaming service will feature Anna Kendrick's directorial debut. However, the thing that fans of the famous and rich Anna Kendrick wouldn't expect is what her directorial debut is about. After all, Anna chose to direct and star in a movie that shines light on the most disturbing episode of The Dating Game.

It’s almost the “Summer of Luv” — at least according to Portugal. The Man and Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Listen to the bands’ collaborative new single below.
“Summer of Luv” is a slinky, psychedelic number, but according to Portugal. The Man frontman John Baldwin Gourley, it didn’t begin that way. “When we originally sat down to write” it, he said in a statement, “we intended to make this heavy song with a big riff, but the vocals came out chill because I was still recovering from my jaw problems, we realized it sat better in this space. The song turned out totally different than we intended.”
Gourley continued, “As we were working on the song, it just felt like it needed another voice, Ruban from Unknown Mortal Orchestra also lives in Portland and is one of our favorite artists, he just fit perfectly in.”

With geographical references to the US-Mexico border, “Thunderdome” is an ode to the so-called American Dream and the lengths people go to in hopes of achieving it. “Welcome to America/ I’m waiting on a miracle/ All my sins American/ Yeah I’m waiting on a miracle,” vocalist John Gourley sings in the track’s opening lines, before Lafourcade chimes in: “You know you want it if you leave somebody you love.”
Black Thought, who’s collaborated with Portugal. the Man before on his 220 track “Fuel,” comes in near “Thunderdome”‘s latter half, and gives the song a welcome hip-hop boost. Check out the visualizer for the song below.

Years after she released her series “Dummy” on the now-defunct Quibi, Cody Heller decided to go into her next project without expectations. In doing so, she’s had her mind blown by the positive reaction she saw online as people received her latest work, “Jury Duty.”
Starring James Marsden, the documentary-style comedy takes one unsuspecting civilian and puts them through a series of pranks. The catch? He doesn’t know everything is fake. The entire case is fake — the judge, courtroom, bailiffs, and all of his peers are all paid actors and everything this team of “jurors” experienced is carefully orchestrated by Heller and her team of writers.
It’s a months long process from development and pre-production that sets the stage for the series, which would go on to become a success for Amazon’s free streaming platform, Freevee.
First, Heller needed a main character — an unwittingly honest protagonist...

During his tenure as ABC’s head of entertainment, Paul Lee helped shepherd hits for the network including “Black-ish,” “Scandal,” and “How to Get Away With Murder,” but he missed having a free hand in content creation. He has that now, he told TheWrap’s Office With a View.
At Wiip, the production company behind HBO murder mystery “Mare of Easttown,” “our special sauce is that we can break the rules,” Lee said. “We can bring in voices that are more distinctive and different from those within their own studios.”
Lee co-founded the independent studio in 2018 with Matteo Perale, the former head of strategy and corporate development at CAA. Besides the Emmy-winning “Mare,” Wiip has also produced Amazon Prime Video’s hit YA series adaptation “The Summer I Turned Pretty” and HBO’s upcoming comedy series “White House Plumbers” with Woody Harrelson.

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon had a pretty stellar musical moment last night when St. Vincent teamed up with house band The Roots to cover Portishead’s classic “Glory Box.” Watch the performance below.
Covering a song as unforgettable as “Glory Box” is certainly no easy task, but St. Vincent does Portishead justice with her faithful rendition. She doesn’t do too much to tweak the source material — why mess with perfection? — but the sultry sheen and electric guitar flourishes are right up St. Vincent’s alley. If you weren’t already convinced Portishead were ahead of their time, here’s some more proof.
“Glory Box” appears on Portishead’s 1994 debut album Dummy. The trip-hop pioneers have been largely defunct for the last decade, but they reunited last year to perform at a Ukraine benefit concert alongside Idles, Katy J Pearson, and Heavy Lungs.
St. Vincent loves a cover.

The reality comedy series “Jury Duty” is an elaborate prank on one normal man, and you’ll want to be in on the joke.
On Tuesday, Amazon released a trailer for the series, which is coming to the free ad-supported service Freevee on April 7. It’s a “docu-comedy” following Ronald Gladden, a solar contractor from San Diego who thinks he’s taking part in a documentary about an American jury trial, from juror selection through verdict. In reality, it’s all fake, every other participant is an actor, and everything that happens is carefully scripted to make him feel like he’s taking crazy pills.
“Jury Duty” was created by “The Office” veterans Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky. “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and “Who Is America?” producer Todd Schulman is an EP. Cody Heller (“Dummy”) is the showrunner, and Jake Szymanski (“The Package”) is the director.

“Jury Duty,” the upcoming docu-style comedy series starring James Marsden as himself, explores truths stranger than fiction when one unsuspecting juror is put in a courtroom of actors for a fake case and a faker documentary.
Marsden leads the “Truman Show”-style misadventure, playing a version of himself who tries – and fails – to get out of his civic duty when the judge fails to recognize him as a public figure. In the first trailer for the Amazon Freevee series, which dropped Tuesday, other characters are seen pushing the envelope of what’s acceptable behavior in the literal court of law – while real-life juror Ronald Gladden goes about his duty being none the wiser that everything is staged.

Though there have been deaf characters in movies for decades they were rarely played by hearing impaired actors. Hollywood was looking for big names for their movies and overlooked performers who were deaf. Case in point: Did you know that Loretta Young played deaf characters in both 1939’s “The Story of Alexander Graham Bell” and 1944’s “And Now Tomorrow”? And hearing actors Jane Wyman and Patty Duke won Oscars playing deaf characters. It wasn’t until 1986’s “Children of a Lesser God” that a deaf actress, Marlee Matlin, won an Oscar for playing a deaf character.
Change has been slow since then, but this past year has been encouraging. Paul Raci received an Oscar nomination this year as a Vietnam Vet who became hearing impaired in the conflict runs a shelter for recovering hearing impaired substance abuse addicts in “Sound of Metal.” Teenage deaf performer Millicent Simmonds returned this year...

The success of HBO’s “Mare of Easttown” couldn’t have come at a better time for Wiip, the boutique production company behind Kate Winslet’s limited series. Roku says its pickup of the 75-plus shows from Quibi, the short-lived premium mobile entertainment startup that went belly-up last year, has paid off beyond its expectations. But as with other streaming companies, Roku isn’t divulging specific metrics for the Quibi programming, which it rebranded as Roku Originals.
According to Roku, more active accounts streamed a Roku Original in the first two weeks on the Roku Channel than the number of Quibi accounts did on Quibi over the brief nine months of the app’s lifetime.
Roku’s claim that more people have already watched Quibi shows on its platform than on Quibi’s now-defunct app seems credible — but it’s not a particularly high bar.

Exclusive: Amazon Studios has acquired Gator and the Egg, an undercover buddy cop movie that becomes another streamer film made possible by the Covid pandemic. Amazon has set Tricia Brock to direct the script by BenDavid Grabinski. Steven Soderbergh, Stacey Sher, Michael Shamberg and John Henson are producing. The film is a buddy movie, a Lethal Weapon-esque pairing for the modern era with a romantic tension at the center. The project originated at USA Network as a pilot that was location scouting when the pandemic hit and USA shut down its scripted projects. After it shook loose, Grabinski refashioned it as a feature film and Amazon saw it as a chance to add a modestly budgeted potential franchise to its slate.

CAA has sold a majority stake in Wiip, the producer behind HBO’s Mare of Easttown and Apple’s Dickinson, to Korean company Jtbc Studios. It marks the first sale of an agency-backed studio after CAA and the other agencies agreed to end their standoff with the WGA and sell a majority interest in their content divisions.
CAA, which was previously the majority owner of wiip, will remain a minority shareholder in the Paul Lee-led company.
Deadline understands that CAA had been shopping the stake around a number of traditional U.S studios but there were no takers. It comes as others such as WME are still looking for a buyer for an 80% stake in Endeavor Content.
Private equity company Atwater Capital, which took a stake in wiip in 2020, will also sell its stake.

Among the first “Roku Originals” coming next week are Kevin Hart’s action series “Die Hart,” Emmy-winning drama “#FreeRayshawn” starring Laurence Fishburne and Jasmine Cephas Jones, the revival of Comedy Central’s “Reno 911!” and “Dummy,” starring Anna Kendrick as a woman who befriends her boyfriend’s sex doll.
The lineup also includes “Chrissy’s Court,” a “Judge Judy”-style show starring Chrissy Teigen; a reboot of MTV’s “Punk’d” hosted by Chance the Rapper...

A raft of 30 original shows developed for — and briefly distributed by — now-defunct streaming startup Quibi are getting new life as Roku Originals, with a premiere date of May 20.
The shows, which include Emmy winner #FreeRayshawn as well as series starring Kevin Hart, Chrissy Teigen, Anna Kendrick, Chance the Rapper and more, will be available on the Roku Channel. (See the full list below.) The remaining titles from the full roster of 75 titles will go live on Roku by the end of 2021.
The free, ad-supported Roku Channel offers 190 live, linear channels and 40,000 movie and TV titles, to viewers beyond Roku’s sizable base of connected devices and smart TVs. Unlike the subscription model of Quibi, the originals will be available for free. Limited advertising will be shown in between the seven- to 10-minute episodes.
On its quarterly earnings call last week, Roku said it now has 53.6 million active accounts, while the...

Roku presented its first original programming slate to media buyers at the NewFronts, showcasing programming acquired in separate deals with Quibi and This Old House.
In a 30-minute virtual pitch, the streaming provider noted the median age of its viewers is 39 (compared with 60-plus for the broadcast networks), and they are less tethered to the traditional cord. About 57% of Roku users have no pay-tv subscription, but many of them are willing to pay for SVOD services like Netflix and Disney+.
This “streaming-first audience is unreachable on linear TV,” said Julian Mintz, Roku’s national brand sales lead.
Roku Originals include a number of the shows that had a brief run on the now-defunct Quibi. Jeffrey Katzenberg’s mobile-focused subscription streaming outlet fizzled last fall, after burning through most of its $1.75 billion in start-up capital. Not surprisingly, no mention was made in the presentation that shows like Dummy, Survive and The Fugitive...

Roku is officially dropping the Quibi name.
Roku announced that the content from its January acquisition of Quibi — the short-lived, short-form mobile entertainment startup founded by Jeffrey Katzenberg — will be rebranded as “Roku Originals.” The 75-plus original shows from Quibi will be available to watch for free on the ad-supported Roku Channel starting sometime this year, the company has said.
Roku Originals also will be the brand name for future original programming for The Roku Channel, which is currently available in the U.S., the U.K. and Canada. The company said it will provide additional details next month about the launch of Roku Originals.
The collection of Quibi programming — snapped up by Roku after Katzenberg’s richly funded company shut its doors six months after launching — includes a dozen unreleased series that will debut for the first time on The Roku Channel. Among those are “The Now,” a suicide-themed comedy from Peter Farrelly,...

Jessica Walter, an Emmy-winning actress known for her work as the stalker in Clint Eastwood’s “Play Misty for Me,” and for the TV series “Arrested Development” and “Archer,” died Wednesday in New York. She was 80.
Walter received an Emmy nomination in 2005 for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy for playing the manipulative alcoholic Lucille Bluth in the critically adored and highly influential comedy “Arrested Development.”
With the rest of the cast of “Arrested Development,” she shared three SAG Award nominations for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a comedy, in 2005, 2006 and 2014.
20th Television said in a statement, “Jessica Walter’s spectacular turn as the devilish Lucille Bluth is one of the great comedic performances of television history, and we loved working with her as much as audiences loved her on ‘Arrested Development.’ Our hearts go out to her family and friends, particularly her daughter, and our former colleague, Brooke.
