Tallinn Festival Hosts Baltic Goes to Cannes Showcase
Image
A partner for the fifth time to the Marché du Film’s Goes to Cannes Estonia’s Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival – the Baltics’ biggest film event – has dedicated a curated program to films from the region for the first time.

The five projects, among the current best from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, will be pitched on May 16 in Cannes. All are in post and looking for co-financing, sales and festival exposure.

The Baltics are on a roll, flying high on Latvia’s first ever Oscar win with “Flow,” so why not build on that momentum and flag what’s next from the region, argues Black Nights Festival’s Triin Tramberg, curator of the program. “As Baltic [co-nationals] we couldn’t be happier of the success of Gints Zilbalodis’ “Flow,” she stated. “We took seriously what [host] Conan O’Brien said at the Oscars – the ball is in our court, but we are...

Kagurabachi is Better Than One Piece?
Image
Over the years, anime and manga have redefined and reshaped the Shonen genre as a whole. This applies to Kagurabachi as well, which has made quite the splash. The action-packed manga is turning out to be the crème de la crème in the genre.

There are several reasons for that: the plot, the characters, as well as the general reception. Some even go so far as to say that it is on par with another record breaker. Yes, they’re referring to One Piece and its towering popularity and chokehold on the audience.

For decades, it has continued to secure its spot as a cult favorite shonen manga. With time, however, it seems that Takeru Hokazono’s opus might take that spot eventually. The reviews, rating and the growing fanbase is an example of that. But is it better than One Piece? Let’s find out.

Kagurabachi, a manga propelled...

Tallinn Black Nights Unveils Its Goes to Cannes Lineup, Bringing the Baltics’ Best to the Marché du Film (Exclusive)

A partner for the fifth time to the Marché du Film’s Goes to Cannes showcase, the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival – the Baltics’ biggest film event – will dedicate a curated program to films from the region for the first time.

The five projects, among the best from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, will be pitched on May 16 in Cannes. All are in post-production and looking for co-financing, sales and festival exposure.

“Baltic have been on the rise for some time already,” said Triin Tramberg, curator of the Tallinn Black Nights Goes to Cannes, referring to the astounding success of Latvia’s Oscar-winning sensation “Flow” and Lithuania’s double Locarno wins for “Toxic” and “Drowning Dry,” among others.

“It’s the right time to make a small presentation of what to expect for Q2 2025- Q1 2026. I believe the five selected projects show the variety of quality we have, and I...

‘Eric Larue’ Director Michael Shannon and Star Judy Greer on Their Timely Film and How He Just Saw ’13 Going on 30′: ‘Finally, I Get It’
Image
Michael Shannon and Judy Greer first collaborated when they were cast in the sweet homage to small town living “Pottersville” in 2017. They would meet up in an episode of the Duplass brothers’ anthology series “Room 104” again as actors. But in Shannon’s feature film directorial debut, “Eric Larue,” Shannon is stepping behind the camera to guide Greer.

Brett Neveu adapted his 2002 stage play for the film, which centers on Janice (Greer), the mother of a school shooter, in the aftermath of the act. Struggling to visit her son and managing the fallout in the community, Greer delivers a powerful tour-de-force for the actor best known for her work in comedies. It’s also a departure for Shannon, who once swore he would never direct for film.

“Eric Larue” also features impressive ensemble including Alexander Skarsgård and Tracy Letts, and opens in limited release April 4. The duo spoke with Variety about the movie,...

‘The Traitors’ Star Carolyn Wiger on Playing Against Danielle Reyes: ‘She Got Me Out’
Image
Across three seasons of “The Traitors,” the Peacock murder mystery competition series has poached 13 fan-favorites from CBS’s reality TV trifecta — and yet, only one of those contestants has been a one-time, non-winning player: Season 3 Traitor, Carolyn Wiger.

That’s part of the reason as to why the “Survivor 44” star experienced some slight “imposter syndrome” when she entered Alan Cumming’s Scottish castle, only to find herself thrown even more as a Traitor alongside “Big Brother” finalist Danielle Reyes, “RuPaul’s Drag Race” winner Bob the Drag Queen and fellow “Survivor” icon Boston Rob Mariano.

“I couldn’t believe it, first and foremost. I just truly never expected this. Like, I’m a huge fan of the show. I would wear my Parvati [Shallow] headband, I would watch in my cloak. I love the show. I love Alan. So when people would say, like, ‘You’d be great on ‘The Traitors,’ I was like,...

Before ‘The Brutalist,’ Guy Pearce Starred In This New-To-Max Spy Thriller Written by Steve Martin
Image
Steve Martinhas had one of the most surprising trajectories of any living actor, as he abandoned stand-up comedy at a relatively young age to become one of the most beloved comedic superstars of all time. Although Martin was renowned for his prowess as a performer, he was respected for the several films that he wrote, such as Roxanne, The Jerk, L.A. Story, and The Man With Two Brains. It was evident that Martin was talented at writing stories that fit his comedic sensibilities, but that didn’t mean that he was limited to films that he appeared in. Martin showed a more serious side with his script for Traitor, an intense spy thriller that featured excellent performances from Don Cheadleand Guy Pearce.

How To Ascend In Path Of Exile 2
Image
Taking an Ascendancy is an important part of customizing your character build in the latter half of Path of Exile 2. In this complicated, Diablo-inspired action RPG system, you'll live or die by the strength of your own unique character build (or one you found in a PoE 2 build guide online). You'll choose everything from your character's class, to the equipment they use, to the skills they learn, to passive buffs that affect all of the above. It can get complicated, but only because of how deep it goes, how customizable every aspect of your character is.

And sometime in the game's second act, you'll have the opportunity to choose an Ascendancy class. This additional wrinkle in your character customization can be hard to understand at first, but it's a necessary part of continuing to progress your character build. Without further ado, here's everything you need to know about unlocking...

What Happened To Kaibrienne After American Idol Season 22?
Image
American Idol season 22 finalist Kaibrienne placed 8th in the reality singing competition in 2024, and she's been busy furthering her music career since the season ended. Kaibrienne, a 20-year-old from Henefer, Utah, who turned 21 three days after the finale on May 22, earned a golden ticket to Hollywood from all three judges--Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan--with her powerful audition song, "Something in the Orange" by Zach Bryan.

Throughout American Idol season 22, Kaibrienne was known for her emotional pop rock style. For her Top 20 performance, Kaibrienne sang her original song, "girl i am now," which earned her a place in the Top 14. She also put her own spin on classic songs such as "Simple Man" by Lynyrd Skynyrd, "Heaven" by Bryan Adams, "Zombie" by The Cranberries, "I Hate Myself for Loving You" by Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, "Wrecking Ball" by Miley Cyrus, "Here Without You" by 3 Doors Down, and "traitor" by Olivia Rodrigo.

Julianne Hough has spoken frankly about her changing understanding of her sexuality, and how it has shaped her life and relationships.

Now 36, the Dancing with the Stars host’s latest comments came on The Jamie Kern Lima Show podcast this month as she reflected on her experiences since coming out as ‘not straight’ in 2019.

Rhoc viewers want ‘justice for Vicki,’ as Bravo tries to ‘make Teddi happen’
Image
The Real Housewives of Orange County viewers aren’t thrilled with how things are going for Season 18.

One of the biggest issues is the addition of Alexis Bellino, who seemingly was used to get under Shannon Beador’s skin. Alexis is currently engaged to John Janssen, Shannon’s ex.

However, the most recent episode has viewers begging for more Vicki Gunvalson.

As the Og of the Oc, her lack of appearances among the group is odd for long-time viewers. She was the breakout star during Season 1, and throughout the years, her life has been heavily featured on the show.

Seeing her back in the fold as one of Shannon’s closest allies has brought up some discussion about having Vicki back on the show.

One viewer wants “justice” for Vicki after things went haywire and she was demoted to a “friend of” role instead of holding her orange.

Is My Hero Academia Season 7 The Final Season?
Image
Approaching the end of a beloved story is always a little bittersweet. It's natural to want things to continue for as long as possible because they've built up so many different expectations for the audience to enjoy. Sadly, not every story is One Piece or Detective Conan, which means that, eventually, every anime or manga needs to find its end. Some stories don't have the luxury of getting their naturally, like Bleach, while others seem to be racing to the finish line since the Elden Ring Dlc is coming out and Gege Akutami cannot end Jujutsu Kaisen fast enough in order to be first in like to play it.

My Hero Academia is closing in on its ending and that means that audiences are hoping to get their most burning questions finally answered. And, to be fair, there are a lot of questions that have answers that are eluding the grasping hands of the population.

Image
Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.

Today we have a conversation about what it means to be underappreciated. Not underrated necessarily. But underappreciated. And, boy, is Don Cheadle underappreciated. The Oscar-nominated actor has been elevating films in supporting roles since the late ‘80s.

Our guest today is Mitchell Beaupre, senior editor at Letterboxd.

Our B-Sides today include: The Assassination of Richard Nixon, Traitor, The Guard, and No Sudden Move. There is also a brief-but-worthwhile tangent on the Scott Caan-directed (!) indie The Dog Problem. Also the Sundance darling Manic from the early 2000s.

We discuss Cheadle’s incredible ability to listen as an actor. There may not be a better active listener working today. We offer some context into legend Steve Martin (who...

The ‘Traitors’ Season Finale Will Make You Laugh, Cry, and Horny for Ct
Image
There are many lessons to be gleaned from Season Two of The Traitors, Peacock’s smash hit reality TV competition based on the parlor game Mafia: 1) that you should never drink from an ominous-looking rusty chalice, particularly if it has been offered to you by a notoriously cutthroat former Survivor contestant; 2) that virtually everyone looks cool in emerald-green velvet cloaks; and 3) that Peacock has an insanely high budget for both breakfast pastries and Alan Cumming’s headgear.

Perhaps the first and foremost takeaway from this season of The Traitors, however,...

Image
A 20-year-old BBC gameshow that bears striking resemblance to smash hit The Traitors has emerged online.

Yesterday, the Back the BBC Twitter account posted a YouTube video of a BBC series from 2004 titled Traitor, hosted by presenter Tony Livesey, in which contestants sit in a circle and try and figure out who the dishonest ‘traitors’ are to win a cash prize.

The BBC and Idtv, the Dutch producer of recent smash hit The Traitors, were taken by surprise by the emergence of this 20-year-old gameshow.

Traitor aired several episodes on the BBC in 2004. One of the former contestants, Pete Liggins, commented on X that the show was being considered as a replacement for The Weakest Link in the late afternoon slot but “I guess cost too much/was too complicated a production in comparison.”

Traitor, which can be watched in full on YouTube below, sees three ‘traitors’ selected and the...

Estonian TV Producers Look to Build on Success of Spy Scandal Drama ‘Traitor’
Image
Estonian producers and companies are looking to reproduce the success of the breakout drama “Traitor” with two new series set for release in 2024.

Financed by Estonian streaming company Elisa and featuring local talent both in front of and behind the camera, “Traitor” was the first domestically produced TV show to have international legs.

“Traitor” tells the story of the biggest spy scandal in Estonian history, when an Estonian defense official was recruited by the Russians in 2004 as the country was set to become the latest member of NATO. Running over two seasons from 2019, the show has been a hit domestically and was distributed internationally by GoQuest Media and will reach U.S. viewers via the Spanish-language streaming platform FlixLatino.

“The best compliment I received at Mipcom in Cannes this year was from an international producer who said they still feel sad they didn’t get ‘Traitor’ back then,” Toomas Ili,...

8 Star Wars Authors Every Fan Needs To Read (In Canon & Legends)
Image
Here are the top Star Wars authors every fan needs to read. Star Wars has always been a transmedia franchise. The first official tie-in novel, Alan Dean Foster's Splinter of the Mind's Eye, was published before The Empire Strikes Back even released. But it wasn't until 1991 that Star Wars really began exploring the potential of novels, with Bantam releasing a string of New York Times-bestselling books.

Related: All Canon Star Wars Books In Chronological Order

It's extremely difficult to rank the best Star Wars authors, not least because many of the best stories are now officially considered non-canon. Some writers have only published once in the franchise, while others still feel as though they're finding their feet. Honorable mentions have to be made to George Mann, Aaron Allston, Alexander Freed, Cavan Scott, Greg Keyes, and Jason Fry. Still, here are Screen Rant's pick for the top eight Star Wars writers.

Israeli thriller 'Trust No One' is about modern cyber warfare, techno-anxieties
Image
Los Angeles, June 19 (Ians) The Israeli espionage thriller ‘Trust No One’ is set to have its world premiere at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival.

It marries the pedigree and primetime polish of past series like ‘Traitor’ and ‘Valley of Tears’ with techno-anxieties tied to the here-and-now, specifically with regard to the security state and modern cyber warfare, reports Variety.

“Israel has become one of the largest global exporters of spy ware,” said co-creator Daniel Amsel. “Only, those technological weapons can undermine democracy and lead to the death of truth. So we wanted to thread those very sensitive topics into an entertaining and fast-paced thriller that deals with the loneliness of leadership and the difficulties of parenthood, among other themes.”

Image
This story about “The Traitors” first appeared in the Limited Series/Movies issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.

As a competition series mixing physical challenges, psychological warfare and reality TV star power, “The Traitors” gave Peacock one of its first watercooler shows.

Based on a Dutch format and produced by Studio Lambert (“The Circle”), the show is set in a castle in Scotland and featured 20 players in its first season, made up of reality television personalities like “Big Brother 22: All Stars” winner Cody Calafiore and “Below Deck” star Kate Chastain,” along with regular folks. The players, who are known as “Faithfuls,” work together to grow the collective prize pool of up to $250,000.

But among them are three covert “Traitors” selected by host Alan Cumming who decide to “murder” a Faithful each night — after those Faithfuls have kicked out a player in the hopes of flushing out the Traitors. It’s Mafia meets “Big Brother,...

Berlinale Series Market: the Cutting-Edge of Contemporary TV
Image
Berlinale Series, established in 2015, keeps offering new shows proper cinema treatment. But it’s not just about that “dark room and the level of concentration you hardly get when you sit on a sofa,” explains head of the event Julia Fidel, noting a surge in stories with a “reasonable” budget.

“We want to screen very different episodic narrative styles from any country in the world. There is this expectation of showcasing ‘blockbuster’ series, which we also include, but the real benefit of [having] a series section at a major festival are the discoveries.”

Such as Market Selects’ Israeli offering “Traitor.” “If the story is outstanding and the characters relatable, the language doesn’t matter,” state showrunners Ron Leshem and Amit Cohen.

“Good shows have to be meaningful,” states Cristina Iliescu, creator- director of Co-Pro Series title “Export Only,” the first foray into series by “Bad Luck Banging” producer Ada Solomon.
