Bambi: The Reckoning ,From Disney Darling to Public Domain exploitation (And Why Your Childhood is Officially Cancelled)
So, Bambi, that wide-eyed fawn who taught us the harsh realities of forest life and the importance of not trusting men with guns, has officially kicked down the velvet ropes and stumbled into the chaotic mosh pit of the public domain. Yes, folks, as of January 2021, Bambi is free! Free to be… anything. And by “anything,” I mean apparently, a vengeful woodland terror.
Now, it took a few years for the creative minds of the “Poohverse” to realize the potential. Apparently, someone finally yelled, “Wait a minute! We can make Bambi a slasher flick!” And thus, a cinematic masterpiece was born.
Because, clearly, nothing says timeless childhood classic like turning your favorite animated characters into vengeful monsters. The Poohverse—a horror-themed cinematic experiment that began with Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey—set the stage for this twisted reimagining.

Casual moviegoers might be familiar with Denis Villeneuve for the Dune franchise, but the filmmaker has long been lauded for his depth, precision, and casting decisions in some of the most acclaimed works. Take, for example, Emily Blunt in the 2015 action thriller Sicario, where her portrayal of a determined FBI agent captivated audiences with the balancing between fierceness and fragility.
Acclaimed filmmaker Denis Villeneuve. | image: Film at Lincoln Center.
According to Denis Villeneuve, he saw right through Emily Blunt’s ability to strike a balance between her femininity and brutality, after watching her previous works. And this particular skill is what landed her the iconic role. But while Villeneuve’s praise of Blunt’s femininity served her performance in Sicario, it might have led to an unexpected consequence to her role as Black Widow, had she landed it.

To date, there have been 13 "Star Trek" feature films, with a 14th movie, "Section 31," scheduled to debut on Paramount+ on January 24, 2025. The films are, many Trekkies would agree, various degrees of good and bad. Some of the "Star Trek" films are among the best sci-fi movies ever made, while others are handily the worst. Many agree that Nicholas Meyer's 1982 film "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" is the best one, although J.J. Abrams' 2009 "Star Trek" is the highest-grossing. The four films based on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" -- that is: "Generations," "First Contact," "Insurrection," and "Nemesis" -- are all pretty middling, although many like the Borg action from "First Contact." My personal favorites are Robert Wise's 1979 epic "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," for its cerebral grandiosity, and Meyer's "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" for its political bent.
The films also fluctuate wildly in mere production quality.

If you want to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, it’s best to pick a project for which you can create frilly dresses from a bygone era. Since its introduction at the 1948 Academy Awards, this category has favored period pictures, including the 2024 winner “Poor Things.” (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Costume Design.)
Voters love to reward the creative forces behind such films, especially those that are about the aristocracy including recent champs “Marie Antoinette” (2007), “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (2008), “The Duchess” (2009), “The Young Victoria” (2010), and “Anna Karenina” (2013). By the way, none of those films even competed for Best Picture. Indeed, only 20 Best Picture champs also won this award; the last to do so was “The Artist” in 2012.
Among the other double dippers was “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004). Fantasy films such as this often boast Oscar-winning costumes, including 2022 champ “Cruella,...

“I’ve been thinking for a long time, ‘Wouldn’t it be great to have an exhibition?’” says costume designer Sandy Powell, whose numerous credits include Shakespeare In Love, most of Martin Scorsese’s recent output and the upcoming Snow White. But, for the three-time Oscar and BAFTA winner — and double Costume Designers Guild Award recipient — a career retrospective isn’t necessarily about flexing. She just wants to share.
“Because I have quite a large collection of my own costumes, which I’ve been sneakily collecting over the years,” says Powell, with a smile. So, when the Savannah College of Art and Design (Scad) came calling “out of the blue,” she immediately jumped on board.
“To get the conversation started, I met Sandy in person a few times, including teatime in London,” says Rafael Gomes, curator and creative director for Scad Fash museums. He then held regular Zoom meetings with...

The Devil Wears Prada star Emily Blunt recalls that her daughters had a funny reaction after watching the film. Released in 2006, The Devil Wears Prada was directed by David Frankel, with a story that follows star Anna Hathaway's Andy Sachs, an aspiring journalist who takes a job at a leading fashion magazine only to find that the magazine editor, Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), is a nightmare. Blunt stars in the film as Emily, Miranda's overloaded and highly-strung assistant, and it remains one of the actor's most memorable roles.
In a recent interview with Page Six while attending the 18th Annual American Institute for Stuttering gala, Blunt reveals that her two daughters didn't particularly enjoy her character in The Devil Wears Prada. According to the actor, they ended up thinking that their mother was just like her short-tempered character in the film. Blunt also reflects on her experience in the movie more generally,...

Netflix has an ever-changing content library, meaning that while some great new titles arrive, some key shows and movies are leaving in October 2024. Since its inception, Netflix has positioned itself as the preeminent streaming service, and they were one of the first to delve into the world of original content, including the arrival of hit films like Rebel Ridge and the popular series The Perfect Couple last month. However, the streamer also has a great reputation for hosting other content, and they are a one-stop-shop for everything from classic series to some of Hollywood's biggest films.
Netflix alters its lineup every month, and many shows and movies on Netflix have a limited time on the platform. September 2024 saw the platform losing some high-profile titles, including the complete series of How to Get Away with Murder, the horror-comedy Bodies Bodies Bodies, and the original Beverly Hills Cop. October 2024 will mark the...

Emily Blunt's return in The Devil Wears Prada sequel is highly anticipated, showcasing her comedic talent once again. Despite Anne Hathaway's absence, the potential for a successful sequel is promising with the right script and cast. Emily Charlton from The Devil Wears Prada remains one of Blunt's best comedic roles, adding depth to the narrative.
Emily Blunt's upcoming return in a sequel to a $326 million hit is a great move, especially after her role in The Fall Guy. Emily Blunt's acting career spans over two decades, with multiple roles in various genres. She has dabbled in every category, from horror to drama to musicals to comedy. After her breakout role in The Devil Wears Prada in 2006, she went on to star in various films such as The Young Victoria, Gnomeo & Juliet, The Five-Year Engagement, Into the Woods, The Girl on the Train, and more.

Emily Blunt has come a long way since playing Miranda Priestly's (Meryl Streep) snooty assistant in The Devil Wears Prada, a supporting role that put her name on the map. From kicking butts in Edge of Tomorrow to delivering a baby in silence in A Quiet Place, to earning an Oscar nomination for Oppenheimer, there is nothing that the actress can't do. Yet, before she demonstrated her range onscreen, Blunt seemed to mostly land comedic parts. That all changed when she became the lead in a biopic entitled The Young Victoria, which allowed her to step into the shoes of the long-reigning ruler around the time that she ascended to the British throne. In the film, Blunt channeled the character's coming-of-age experience, from having to grow up overnight when becoming queen to falling madly in love with Prince Albert (Rupert Friend).

Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton entering into a unique arrangement, J.Lo fighting evil artificial intelligence, the roasting of an NFL legend, a retelling of the invention of the Pop Tart, Brooke Shields and Benjamin Bratt at war and John Mulaney’s six-night live comedy event from Los Angeles are some of the big titles hitting Netflix in May.
Debuting on May 3 is Jerry Seinfeld’s directorial debut, Unfrosted. The comedy legend works both sides of the camera for this humorous feature take on the birth of the Pop Tart. The movie is set in 1963 as breakfast cereal giants Kellogg’s and Post compete to become the first company to create a morning pastry. Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan and Amy Schumer also star, with Hugh Grant more than likely to steal the whole film with a turn as Tony the Tiger.

As summer approaches (for the Northern Hemisphere at least), Netflix is set to premiere a fresh season of one of its biggest hits.
Brigerton season 3 is set to arrive on May 16 and will debut a “new crop of debutantes” into the regency drama fray. Other original series of note this month include Indian drama Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar (May 1), the Jeff Daniels-starring A Man in Full (May 2), and intriguing Korean title The 8 Show (May 17). Of course, Netflix is also rolling out a suite of true crime docs and docuseries as well. Chief among those options is Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal on May 15.
It’s the movie side of things where Netflix is feeling particularly lively though. May 3 sees the arrival of Jerry Seinfeld Pop Tart comedy Unfrosted. That will be followed by rom-com Mother of the Bride (May 9) and the Jennifer Lopez-starring Atlas (May 24).

As she ascended the Hollywood ladder in the late 2000s, Emily Blunt was a rising star who worked at the forefront of modern cinema and appeared in movies like The Young Victoria and The Devil Wears Prada. The Into the Woods actress’ recent performances in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer have further cemented her status among the greatest actors of our time.
Moreover, her acclaimed performance led to her being nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award. Well, as she becomes a more important icon in modern cinema, Blunt has begun to share her thoughts on the industry, revealing her top four films during a SXSW Q&a session.

It’s a fairly big month on Prime Video in March, at least compared to the other streaming service offerings! There are are two major films arriving on Amazon’s streamer. The first is a remake of the Patrick Swayze action classic Road House. Stepping into the late Swayze’s shoes? A crazy-jacked Jake Gyllenhaal, who really seemed to want to go the extra mile for this project.
The other big film coming to Prime Video is Ricky Stanicky, and the plot sounds really fun! It follows three friends who have always blamed their mistakes on an imaginary guy called Ricky Stanicky. When they have to finally introduce people to Stanicky, they decide to hire a washed-up actor (John Cena) to impersonate him. Hilarity ensues, maybe? But if neither of those make your watchlist, there’s also the return of the animated hit series Invincible.

And yet, she has never been so much as nominated for an Oscar.

“The Girl on the Train,” “A Quiet Place,” “Mary Poppins Returns,” “The Devil Wears Prada,” “Sicario,” “Looper,” “The Young Victoria.” Those are just a select few of the many acclaimed performances delivered by Emily Blunt in her first two decades as a star. She has been nominated for seven Golden Globes, seven Critics’ Choice Awards, four SAG Awards and three BAFTAs. She’s won at the Globes (“Gideon’s Daughter”), Critics’ Choice (“Edge of Tomorrow”) and SAG (“A Quiet Place.”) So how has this widely beloved actress not had her time in the sun with the academy?
She has never been part of a Best Picture nominee. None of those aforementioned films of hers made the cut with the academy in the top category. This will undoubtedly change with “Oppenheimer.” Indeed this 3-hour pressure-cooker of an epic is widely predicted to win the top prize.

Jonathan Swift published his popular fantasy-cum-political-satire "Gulliver's Travels" -- a.k.a. "Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World. In Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of Several Ships" -- in 1726. Gulliver, in traveling to faraway and bizarre lands, finds several countries and kingdoms whose entire societies are focused on trivial matters, often to the point of ruination. In Lilliput, the citizens are six-inch-tall royals, and the country has split into factions over which side of the egg is more appropriate for cracking. Gulliver also visits the giant country of Brobdingnag, the floating island of Laputa, and several other fantastical places. To this day, Swift's novel is a provocative and pointed read, poking fun at governmental idiocy in general, and foolish obsessives in particular.
Rob Letterman's 2010 film adaptation of "Gulliver's Travels" is ... not provocative. In fact, it's downright dumb. The 2010 film...

Timothée Chalamet pays homage to Gene Wilder with a subtle dance move that mirrors Wilder's iconic scene in the original Willy Wonka film. The origin of the golden ticket in Wonka is tied to Willy's mother, who gives him a golden ticket as a gesture of sharing. Paterson Joseph, known for his role as Johnson in Peep Show, appears as Slugworth in Wonka, catching the attention of observant fans of the British sitcom.
Whether it was the fitting, subtle tribute to Stan Lee in Spider-Man: No Way Home, the hidden Star Wars symbols in The Raiders of the Lost Ark, or the fact the real Princess Beatrice makes a cameo appearance in The Young Victoria, film directors have made a habit of placing covert movie Easter eggs in their films, often urging the most eagle-eyed fans to take notice of these tiny, albeit often deeply significant details.

Downton Abbey hit our screens in 2010 and was an immediate success. It was created by Julian Fellowes, a master of the period drama genre who wrote Belgravia, Vanity Fair, The Young Victoria, and The Gilded Age, his latest show which is currently in the midst of its second season on HBO. Downton Abbey was an incredibly well-made historical and sociological fresco thanks to its very diverse, endearing, and complex characters.

Twenty-five years ago today, Todd Haynes’ impressionistic glam-rock fantasy Velvet Goldmine hit movie theaters, offering audiences a glimpse of a short-lived era of rock defined by artists like David Bowie, Marc Bolan, and Roxy Music. Told as a Citizen Kane-like investigation into the disappearance of fictional pop star Brian Slade (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), the nonlinear film captured an energy and aesthetic vibrance that remains unparalleled. Its stacked cast also included Christian Bale as glam-rock fan-turned-journalist Arthur Stuart, Ewan McGregor as Iggy Pop-esque rocker Curt Wild, and Toni Collette...

With Pain Hustlers new on Netflix, Emily Blunt continues to stake her claim in 2023. Indeed, we're heading into an awards season that could end with the British actress becoming, at long last, an Academy Award-nominated thespian. For over a decade, she has persisted as a contender who never makes it to the finish line, stranded with precursor support but no love from AMPAS itself. Hell, when the Almost There series eventually comes back, one could dedicate an entire month, if not more, to Blunt's many failed bids – from The Young Victoria to her SAG-winning turn in A Quiet Place. Keep in mind that The Devil Wears Prada, arguably her most egregious snub, was already covered a while ago.
In any case, hopes are high for Blunt fans, even if few would argue her performance in Oppenheimer represents the height of her talents. Not that it's...

The Gilded Age aims to accurately represent the details of the time period, from clothing to social norms, offering a fuller picture of 1880s fashion and New York society. While the specific details may be fictional, the show captures the social war between old and new money groups in New York, reflecting the conflict and attraction between them. The Russells, particularly Bertha and George, are loosely based on Alva and William K. Vanderbilt, who had to work hard to gain respect and entry into the upper echelons of New York society. The show includes other real historical figures, such as Clara Barton and Thomas Fortune, to add to its period accuracy.
The Gilded Age comes from the mind of Julian Fellowes, who is behind movies and TV shows such as Downton Abbey, The Young Victoria, and Vanity Fair. This series, which airs on HBO, is set in New York City in the 1880s,...

The Swan is a short film adapted from Roald Dahl's story, praised for its cleverness and similarity to Dahl's style. Rupert Friend delivers a deadpan, comedic performance as the Narrator, providing voices for all the characters. Ralph Fiennes makes a brief appearance as Dahl himself, while Asa Jennings impresses in his first on-screen role as Peter Watson.
Wes Anderson’s The Swan is a short film adapted from Roald Dahl’s classic children’s story, featuring a small cast of eccentric characters brought to life by some of today’s most talented actors. Anderson’s fascination with Dahl’s stories began with Fantastic Mr. Fox, and the director has now released a new wave of short films that draw inspiration from the author’s works. If you want to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, it’s best to pick a project for which you can create frilly dresses from a bygone era. Since its introduction at the 1948 Academy Awards, this category has favored period pictures, including the 2021 winner “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Voters love to reward the creative forces behind such films, especially those that are about the aristocracy including recent champs “Marie Antoinette” (2007), “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (2008), “The Duchess” (2009), “The Young Victoria” (2010), and “Anna Karenina” (2013). One of the most talked-about elements of Christopher Nolan’s ambitious biopic Oppenheimer is its star-studded cast, with each of the actors playing a real-life character. Set during the height of the Second World War, Oppenheimer recreates the events that led to the creation of the first atomic bomb and its tumultuous aftermath. While Cillian Murphy leads the pack as the titular scientist, the visually spectacular epic involves many multi-faceted characters. J. Robert Oppenheimer’s peers and legendary scientists like Albert Einstein make it to the ensemble, along with some of the closest people in his life, such as his wife Katherine Oppenheimer and former romantic partner Jean Tatlock.

Must-watch comedy series, eye-opening documentaries and an expansion of the “Bridgerton” universe are among the noteworthy additions to Netflix this month. May 12 sees the premiere of Jennifer Lopez’s new Netflix original film “The Mother,” in which she plays an assassin lured back in for one last job. And on May 23, the documentary “Victim/Suspect” examines how sexual assault victims too often get turned into suspects when they report their assaults.
“Queen Charlotte,” the “Bridgerton” prequel series, arrives on May 4 while a new season of Tim Robinson’s sketch series “I Think You Should Leave” drops on May 30. And if you missed the most recent season of the niche (but delightful) comedy series “Documentary Now!,” you can stream that on Netflix starting May 9.

Netflix recently announced it would be investing $2.5 billion into South Korean programming. Before Squid Game season 2 comes down the pike, however, the first seeds of that investment will bear fruit for Netflix in May 2023.
Netflix’s list of new releases for May 2023 is highlighted by the May 12 release of Korean series Black Knight. Set “in a dystopian 2071 devastated by air pollution,” this show will follow world-saving deliverymen known as “Black Knights.” Other international offerings this month include Japanese sumo drama Sanctuary on May 4 and Spanish crime thriller Muted on May 19.
Netflix’s domestic TV options this month include Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story on May 4. That will be followed by post-apocalyptic animated comedy Mulligan on May 12 and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s TV debut Fubar on May 25. And for those hoping for “triples,” I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson premieres on May 30.

With its list of new releases for September 2022, Prime Video is finally unveiling the most anticipated (and expensive) series in the streamer’s history.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will arrive to Prime Video’s servers on Sept. 2, 2022. This Lord of the Rings prequel, set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age, is in many ways the kind of TV property that Prime Video must have always wanted. It’s certainly the TV property most fitting with the company’s largesse and riches. The Rings of Power will cover the creation of the titular rings and many important events from Tolkien’s lore (condensed into a more TV-appropriate timeframe).

Veteran PR executive Vicky Eguia, who worked on several award winning movie campaigns such as Pan’s Labyrinth, La Vie en Rose and Amazon Studios’ Oscar winning Manchester by the Sea and The Salesman, has died after a long battle with cancer. She was 48.
Her family revealed the news in a Facebook post early Saturday.
For any reporter, publicist or filmmaker who worked with Vicky, they’ll remember her for her jubilant, graceful, patient and can-do spirit. As a journalist, whether you were working with Vicky on a breaking news story, or trying to land an interview with major talent during awards season (i.e. breakfast with Nic Winding Refn) or tickets to a big Cannes film premiere, she always delivered. There wasn’t an ask that was impossible.
For the last seven years, Vicky worked at Amazon Studios, her most recent position being Director of PR, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion and Community Relations.
